Harrison Ford never liked his Han Solo character despite the fact that it catapulted him to stardom that Mark Hamill never had. I like most of Harrison films but felt that he was ungrateful for wanting to have his Han Solo killed off in The Empire Strikes Back. As a GenXer and an OT Star Wars fan club member, I really felt betrayed when he said those things in the past. Good thing he had such good films like Indiana Jones series, The Fugitive, Blade Runner, etc that his Star Wars fans like me were able to forgive him.

Same, I was five when Star Wars came out,and it defined my childhood. The prequels, which I didn't really like,was adored by my four year old son, and so I spent lots of money buying him figures and toys. This last lot is a joke to myself and my son, and we don't bother showing it to my five year old granddaughter....a pity,as I was looking forward to buying her the next generation of Starwars figures. Disney ruined all of this and then mocked the previous two generations of fans for our dissatisfaction of this latest shitshow of a trilogy.

@@zanir2387 lots of people have the old trilogy. I cant watch it anymore though, the plot holes created by 7 and 8 ripped anything that was "acceptable" or at least supported my suspension of disbelief of the OT's universe to shreds to the point of absolute apathy/inaction. I was a person who liked the above average films that were ep 4-6, and I was vocal enough about it to be (somewhat easily) encouraged many times by freinds who were massive fans of SW to watch one of them again for the 50th time with them. I was not completely upset about 1-3, (though I understand why many were shaking their head) and was willing to have optimism that 7-9 would be at least as mediocre as 1-3. Now, I find myself more interested in researching the folly of the last few movies to help me understand my rather dispondent feelings towards the final trilogy, rather than wasting an Andrew Jackson (or two) on ep9 which is almost certain to support more of my confusion as to what SW has become. Yeah, I am increasingly losing intrest in everything I liked about SW and the promise of "beautiful visuals" has never been enough for me to want to pay for a movie. I dont want to continue pretending that surviving on this planet long enough to see all 9 Episodes is still important to me. Instead, I want to live long enough to see whoever is responsible for the direction this is franchise is going to pay dearly for their arrogance and ignorance of the general populations desire to see a decent story.... (I mean seriously, how is it that The Big Bang Theory better at explaining why Mark Hamill is officiating Sheldon's wedding, than a Star Wars movie is at explaining what the hell we're watching?) Yes. I want those responsible to apologize, recant their ridiculous notions of good literature, and to restart this whole effort (leave Rogue One alone though, that wasnt a complete waste of time) Whether that consequence comes in the form of some Starwars geek/Anonymous member hacking Rian Johnsons Facebook account on a daily basis or hearing that Kathleen Kennedy ends up in prison because she is revealed to be a female/misandrist version of Harvey Weinstein (big shocking revea!!!) that kidnaps men and keeps them in a pit in her basement, doesnt matter. I just want to be entertained, and so far, those things may be the only way for anything Star Wars related to put a smile on my face ever again. Unless it's a scathing critique of ep8 or 9.. That entertains me, or so I've recently found out.. Lol

Apathy is the best adjective I can come up with. A desire of absolute inaction, pure as the driven snow. The only reason I watch videos like this is for enlightenment of how absolutely confused I felt as the end credits of TLJ rollled, and for the entertainment value that a video like this gives me. I wanted to see Rey as a Star Wars version of Sarah Connor in the original Terminator. Instead we got something very few have the ability or balls to even attempt to explain... A paper thin character that isnt likeable, relatable, nor does the character have the ability take me as an audience member by the hand on an adventure. We got wince inducing attempts at humor, strange sources of sustenance, and literal pats on the head when the movie was literally speaking my mind (ie. Poe's demand for Admiral Short Haircut to at least reveal that there is a purpose to all of this and she responds with something akin to "of course you want an explanation but I dont know myself").

Other characters mock her for trying to fix "that old piece of junk", but she keeps trying. At the climax of the film, right when someone is about to bite the big one - say, Kylo is about to kill Han - we hear a lightsaber turn on. She fixed it. Now THAT would have been good story-telling, making use of the actual skills she possessed: mechanics and fixing junk. She wouldn't know how to use the lightsaber and would get defeated, but she'd escape and survive to be trained in the next movie and she'd have her own lightsaber that she built/fixed. Current "Star Wars" achieved one thing- i treat them as fan fiction, and for me story ended at the Battle of Endor. About the ONLY new movie i like is "Rogue One" and i think it adds to the story, instead of taking and fucking everything bloody, like other new movies do... If that piece of shit movie killed your love for old ones, maybe you weren`t fan in the first place? Be an adult- ignore your problems, and they go away XD well in this case- it`ll work

The force awakens was all I needed to see. Rey appears nothing like an orphan scavenger on a mafia planet. Finn is nothing like a stormtrooper who spent his life in the military. Poe is fly boy! Boy can he fly! I was 15 minutes into that movie and I knew this whole franchise was toast.
@hanburgundy43175 жыл бұрын
I felt those things for The Force Awakens. TFA worried be so badly about how the fate of Star Wars was going to end up. When The Last Jedi came out, it was so bad that I laughed the whole time; I was relieved. I didn't have to care anymore - it was over. It was like Frodo at the end of Return of the King: standing on the side of an erupting volcano, surrounded in lava, doomed to die, but smiling and laughing because all of the shit he had to deal with was over.

My favourite Star Wars film will always be A New Hope, because I was 14 when it came out, and I had never seen anything like it. But the one I admire the most is The Empire Strikes Back, because Luke really thinks he's ready, though Yoda pleads with him to reconsider... and he's not. He gets his hand chopped off (by his evil father, no less), and, despairing and unable to help himself, he has to be rescued by his friends. He is cocky, and he pays the price and nearly dies. Rey is not even cocky: she just expects the world to drop in her lap, and is not surprised when it always does. I would warm to her in a heartbeat if she just had a horrified and justified moment of "Oh, no, what the _fuck_ have I done?", knowing she can't take it back, knowing there are dire consequences that will lie on her conscience for the rest of her life (but she can learn and _grow_ from them). Luke had that moment when he thought he was ready to take on Vader, but he wasn't. In Return of the Jedi, Luke _is_ ready: but he's so close to the Dark Side, you can taste it. So I like that film, too. That's when Star Wars grew up, IMO. So the original trilogy are the ones I watch most often. My favourite of the prequels is Revenge of the Sith (I confess, I have never made it all the way through The Phantom Menace. Or Rogue 1. Or Even tried to watch The Last Jedi. And almost certainly not this latest debacle. Though I did watch the _meh_ Soylo.) But action film franchises are a dying breed as SJW Hollywood luvvies take a chainsaw to every fandom going. All I have now is _Dark Mirror_... and that's going down the old rabbit-hole, too.
@briant72654 жыл бұрын
The real problem that the writers ran into is how good the original trilogy really was. If they had done all the "right things" with Rey, it would have just been the original trilogy with a gender swap. It would have been just as wretched and bland as this turd.

I must say I am with you on the Captain Marvel killing Thanos idea. It's been what, 11 years building up to this moment. We have met, loved, laughed and mourned heroes in those 11 years, we have a connection with those heroes and a passion to see them succeed. Then along comes a character that no one has really ever liked, had one luke warm outing in the cinemas and we are to believe she is the Thanos killer. People want to see their heroes win, not some shoe-horned ex machina who turns up at the last minute that no one likes. It's almost like hollywood has forgotten what a story arc is, cause "strong female characters" these days just don't have one. She is strong! But why? She is brave! But why? She is powerful! But why? Important story telling narrative is glossed over or just left out cause the character has a vagina.

I was a kid when the original Star Wars was released. The perfect age to be completely blown away by such a film. By the time of Return of the Jedi, i was in my early teens and was still captivated. As i grew older i said goodbye to childish things and have thus been spared the torrent of shite that every Star Wars film after Return of the Jedi has been.

Rey being Mary Sue was the least of TLJ's faults. To be fair, Baby Anakin was OP too. Have you _seen_ that pod race? Or the end of Phantom Menace? I'm much more perplexed by how turned on Rey got with Kylo's nipples after seeing him murder his dad in cold blood. (Kinda like how it was confusing when Padme fell for Anakin right after he told her he killed all the women and children of the Sand People, but then she's mortified when he kills Jedi younglings.) Or Rose smashing into Finn for a little smooch. Or Luke's inability to even drink milk without slobbering all over himself. Mary Sue is the least repugnant thing of all in this franchise when compared to freeing the animals but not the slave kids... I can handle the weird writing, but to not even deliver a single decent space battle or lightsaber duel... unforgivable!

@@happyhammer1 Let me be clear, I am a Star Wars fan. Despite the many writing flaws, I was 4 when ANH first arrived in theaters, and it's one of my earliest memories. There's a Star Wars culture because of people just like me and my siblings who didn't care if everyone thought we were insane, we took our lightsabers to the next movie, and the next... And more and more people started not to care and bringing their lightsabers too! Star Wars, for me, is an EVENT, bad writing and all, but it should AT LEAST be Star Wars in more than just name. It deserves space battles and duels. It deserves more than just being subverted. Star Wars used to be FUN. It deserves to be FUN again. When I saw TLJ, and Luke tossed his lightsaber after all those years having not seen it... to hear one little kid's voice ring out in the theater, "Why'd he do THAT, dad? Is he going to help?" killed it for me.

@@maxcovfefe I was born a year after empire came out and my childhood was ruled by Star Wars. I love the original trilogy and I am not ashamed to admit that nostalgia is part of that, but what makes it timeless for me was the hero's journey. What brings me back though, is Luke going from a farm boy to a noble warrior. I think that message is missing in a lot of movies and the culture nowadays. Adversity seems awful when you are experiencing it but it also makes you a better person. Sorry for the rant.

This video speaks to my soul. You voiced my exact feelings on the state of Star Wars. I will say that I have been reading some of the new canon books and there are some great stories out there. It's a shame that with all of the passion around Star Wars and amazing authors writing stories, that they seem to pick the worst ideas they can find.

@vwhite30555 жыл бұрын
Except that the franchise jumped the shark when Luke milked thala-sirens and drank their green body fluids. Or maybe when Rey, totally untrained, beat the supposedly powerful Kylo Ren in lightsaber battle. Or maybe when Lucas sold it to Disney....

It may be "jumping the Tie fighter" for a short while, but we still have two episodes of Game of Thrones left to just "get it over with," so I'm sure the phrase will change very shortly after episode 6 of that train wreck.

The best approach they could have taken with Luke being the angry, repressed hermit would have been a dual learning experience - Luke would help show Rey that her untamed and untrained force powers are dangerous when coupled with her inexperience, and Rey could have also helped Luke to bring back his optimism and his belief, and you could see that the two of them meeting actually made these two characters grow in a satisfying way. .... But the absolutely tragic part is that, had Rey learned anything from Luke, he would have been "mansplaining" or some crap. That's Rey's problem - she has nothing to bring to the other characters, and nobody else can impart any wisdom on her. She's a black void. Edit: Also, it's very easy to blame Mark Hamill for the outcome of Luke, but he was signed up to the new trilogy at the beginning, back when J J was making 7, and before Rian wrote TLJ in an afternoon. Ford and Fisher did the same, but their characters weren't ruined by the writers (yet.) I know it's easy to blame him, and while it's easy, especially for someone like me who disagrees with him politically, to cheer it on, it just seems as unfair to blame Mark for episode 8's Luke as it will be to blame Carrie Fisher for Episode 9's Leia, if you get me.
