I am really enjoying your videos. Mae sot is my favourite town in Thailand. The canals have been a major achievement from the perspective of locals as it has mitigated the terrible flooding that used to be so common. Modern buildings on the ground were so prone to high water but the investment in canals has made a big difference. It was a big issue in local elections for a long time! Thank you for sharing your life with us.

Thanks, Jamie. I really like Mae Sot, as well. I ended up here pretty much by accident because of the border closures and life circumstances, but I've quite enjoyed my time here. I've recently come to really appreciate those canals. The heavy rains have led to a lot of flooding. The canal near my guest house actually overflowed. As big as it is, it couldn't even handle the water flow, and my whole neighborhood was flooded. I can't even imagine what the situation would have been like without those canals. It feels like Mae Sot would be a lake right now if those canals were not operating.

With economies heavily reliant on tourism suffering the way they are right now you would think that they would want to keep people with money to spend inside their countries. But what do I know. Thanks for another great vlog Doug, they're always good.

I was curious to know where this canal is and managed to find in Google map. I even watched your video and traced the canal entry point, bamboo bridge and end point where the walk path end. You were lucky that stray dogs didn't bite you. Very interesting, I wish I could do the same after I retired 😊

You can tell a long term visitor to Asia when you realise that trying to walk any distance on the footpath is near impossible leaving the road as the only alternative. I congratulate you on handling the reflective heat off the bitumen.

Oh you beautiful Thai bureaucracy! I was half expecting future Doug to pop out of a wormhole somewhere in Turkey. Staying put is probably the best course. Even with the hassle it scores above flying in some roundabout way to Canada. That would not be a cheap option. The "support" letter Canada gave you was pretty disappointing. Sounds like they have different levels of support and they gave you the weakest non-supporting support letter. I didn't understand why so many foreigners waited until the last minute to go to Immigration and you cleared that up in your vlog. Many happy visa renewals!

Love your ending where you say "I think these things will happen" Optimistic , I am sure bureaucracy will get in the way! Also I believe Malaysia is not letting anyone in till end of December but could be longer.

That water hyacinth is certainly a problem. It seems to have invaded may countries. I found this on comment on the web regarding its prominence in Nth America: "Ecological Threat Eichhornia crassipes invades lakes, ponds, rivers, marshes, and other types of wetland habitats. It can quickly form dense floating mats of vegetation (populations can double in size in two weeks!). These dense mats restrict light to the underwater environment, reduce the light availability for submersed plants and aquatic invertebrates, and deplete the oxygen levels. Eichhornia crassipes is native to South America and was first introduced as an ornamental into the United States in 1884 at the Cotton States Exposition in New Orleans."

Yes Thailand have been so generous with their visa amnesty and the Thai people have been welcoming throughout this really difficult time for them, just a shame they didn't give more notice for this last one!!!

Hi Doug. About 6:36. I haven't heard the word "chavvy" used much recently. British slang: "an insulting way to describe a person, or their behaviour, clothes, etc. that is thought to show a lack of education and low social class" hehe.

Tourist visa extension application. Well, that was another waste of time and money...fucked up dangerous road in the pissing rain...went to IB office today,as instructed...told my visa was not ready...3 times now at 500 baht per trip. I was given a phone number and told to call back...

Any of the main agencies in big towns will get you a visa if you have the money. A retirement visa for example will cost 24 000 baht or thereabouts. These agencies are run in 'association' with immigration, and are often run by immigration officers, usually retired. If you for example pay 24000 for a one year visa, the agency will take only about 6000 of that, most of the money goes to immigration as a backhander. The stamp that you get in your passport is a genuine one. That's how it works here. The agencies are a big earner for immigration.

I think you are being ripped off. I pay 1,900 per year for my retirement visa at the Immigration Department in Bangkok. Went into Immigration a month ago, no problem for me.

that was an epic and so many dogs, the hounds of mae sot, those canals look so sinister, there's no way i would go along those walkways and absolutely no way i'd go anywhere near those howling mutts, or puppies as you gently call them - you're in the middle of town and in the neighbourhood of tesco lotus superstore and yet it has the stark and bleak appearance of being in the middle of nowhere so appropriate to set the recounting of your odd and nonsensical observations of how your world works or does not work or only just works - ish - kind of - as seen from another universe - good luck Doug - and on to the next stamp Stamp STAMP STAM P STA M P ST A M P S T A M P

Why the obsession with Malaysia? Why not just explore Thailand? Its a far nicer country with less western influence and so many cheap great regions to explore. Why are you just staying in Mai Sot? Why not travel whilst stuck there ? You can still do it for cheap. Also how do you earn cash? Are you teaching online? You need to do some type of Q&A to stop me asking my wife these questions about you

Thai government lures Doug in every possible way to trap him in Mae Sot forever. I think I might have chance to see his guesthouse if I have plan to go Um Phang this year end with halfway break in Mae Sot.

You people in Thailand worry about visa's too much, when I was there I never did anything until I left and if I owed money I paid, they never did one thing to me on a overstay an I did this for 10 years up until 2010 was the last time I was there.Too Much BS about visa's now.If a guy overstays 5 or 10m years then he deserves what he gets but a couple months ain't nothing.
