Another film that has me searching for words. Amazing. Stupendous. Magnificent. None of those words seem to truly capture your subdued brilliance. A rock pounds upon the water and sinks, and yet, at the same time, the dappling sunlight plays in its spreading ripples and weaves a story lighter than a falling feather. You reveal to us nature in all its glory, and you take away nothing. As others and I have said before; wow. I think Thoreau would be awed.

I live in Las Vegas and have a 1000-gallon pond in my yard. I went to a nursery that sells plants for ponds and a decent sized tub with plants was also teaming with Blue Tail Killifish. They didnt know how the fish got there but suspected the plants had eggs already attached. Thery were nice enough to scope out 25 of these fish and give them to me at no charge! They are thriving in my pond and even hatching fry which is pretty exciting! My question to you or anyone out there is: Will my Killifish survive the cold Las Vegas winter? the temps in LV during Dec-Feb can get as low as 50 degrees and 36 degrees over night. I would hate to lose these little guys as I have become somewhat attached to them!
@TheDave333
@TheDave333 10 ай бұрын
What a lucky break getting those fish. Unfortunately, I seriously doubt that they'll survive the cold temps. Installing a heater might be an option, or you could snag a few and bring them indoors.

Have you ever tried Indian Almond (cattapa) leaves as an anti-fungal agent? I'm curious what the results would be with Killifish. *Edit* Just went back and watched your Golden Wonder Killifish video and saw you offer this tip. Keep up the great work!

Thank you! Fungus is inhibited by acidic water, so Almond leaves or even Oak leaves can be helpful. I just use Oak most of the time, because they grow near my house. :-D

would these methods mostly hold true for any species of killifish? i have a trio of clown killis in my planted tank that id love to try breeding, but their small size makes it hard to find live foods they can have... ive been doing flightless fruit flies and high quality dry foods ground down, but no luck. any ideas?

Thank you for watching the video. Yes, the spawning mop method will work for the clown killifish. Other killis need other methods, it depends on the species. One of the easiest live cultures is vinegar eels. They would work really well for clown killis because they congregate at the top of the tank where the killis will be. Microworms are also easy to culture, but they sink to the bottom. They're still effective though. In the right climate you could culture mosquito larvae as well. . . Densely planted tanks with lots of driftwood work well too, because they contain lots of naturally occurring live foods.

Going to my local fish store tomorrow to see if he can order me a pair :D. Gonna try the natural let the fry grow with parents style. 60 liter planted tank. At what age do you take the fry out of the main tank?
@TheDave333
@TheDave333 6 жыл бұрын
It's best to remove the older fry when new fry start to appear, because the older brothers and sisters will eat the new arrivals. In a heavily planted tank, a few of the very young fry will still make it. I usually take them out as soon as I start to see color on the young males, because that's when I can sell them to the local pet store.

Hello! I am a PhD student studying killifish reproduction and I LOVE your videos! I have two questions for you: how do you reduce the glare on the glass and what kind of lighting do you use? Thank you!
@TheDave333
@TheDave333 3 жыл бұрын
Hello fellow lover of science, biology, and fish !!! Turning off all of the other lights in the room where you're filming is a good start. Other than the light(s) used to illuminate the tank, the room should be dark. Using side -lighting is also very helpful for combatting glare. Try not to illuminate the camera with the light or it might show up on the video. Filming at a slight angle is also helpful. The camera body and the "film plane" should not be parallel to each other. But, if you change the angle too much you get image distortion. For lighting, I use inexpensive LED lights from the dollar store!! They're made by Sunbeam. They're described as "warm white" lights. (color temperature 3000 K) And there you have it. All of my secrets. btw. I love your photos! 📽🐠🙂

Since i don't want to breed gardneri, can i hold one male in a dense planted commumity tank with tetras and dwarf cichlids?
@TheDave333

Yes, but be sure that the tetras are large enough to not become a meal for the killifish. Please reconsider your decision to not breed them . . . :-)

@TheDave333
@TheDave333 4 жыл бұрын
Not to twist your arm but, the Gardneri population will usually self-regulate their numbers. Many fry will be eaten, but ideally a couple babies will live to keep the population going. No need to remove their eggs, or do anything special, just let them breed. They're not going to breed out of control like "pest snails" or guppies !!! You know you want to . . . . lol :-)

I got into killifish because I got one with my guppies at Petco. How could I identify the type it is. It has grown quite a bit in a year, so I named him Uaws. I believe he ate a rosy red that we got by mistake at Petsmart I believe I have a female be she isn’t as brilliantly colored as my male steel blue.

Hi! It is probably a Golden Wonder KIllifish. It's one of the few Killifish species that you'll find for sale in the big pet stores. Another Killi often encountered is the tiny "Rocket Killifish". (also known as the clown killifish). ) I've never seen Gardneri killifish for sale in petco, but I have seen lots of Golden wonder KIllifish. I have a video about the Golden Wonder KIlli. Watch it and see if that's what you have. . . kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLxzq9mBuZedcqM.html
