Check out the video I just posted today, I explain my scoring system in detail. Believe it or not, a 7.8 is a REALLY good score. Anything above a 5 is o.k., so a 7.8 is borderline great! Trust me, if you watch the video where I explain my scoring system, you'll see this was actually a really good score. After this video was released, I listened to the studio version of this song. On the album they intentionally sing the "do do do do do do do's" about 5-10 cents flat...and I said in my review that if they do this intentionally, that is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!! It's a great song, well written, well recorded, well mixed, well executed. Those do do do do do do do's are SO catchy, they're still rattling around in my head even today.

With the exception of the improvised lyrics at the end, the song here is very similar to the studio version. As for the background vocals, the audience takes care of that at their shows 😜

Them going flat was most likely intentional, as you can hear them bend the note down at the very end of the riff. I think it was a choice to match the sad and dark tone of the songs lyrical content. IMO unplugged was the perfect setting for Black as it is one of their more delicate songs, and it highlights Eddie. His performance was nearly perfect and delivered with so much emotion. A great example of a song written with deep lyrical substance, precisely arranged, and performed with more emotion than 99% of people can emote.. I give it a 9.5. Cant ask for much more than that.

My opinion, this is my all time favorite version of this song. It’s an extremely personal song to Vedder. I love it because it’s raw and he is able to make you FEEL this song. Watch his body language during specific lyrics of the song. This song, this version, especially the lyrics Eddie just off the cuff added at the end of the song…damn.

You pronounced the name correctly. Thanks for doing this review. I think you’ll change your tune on a few opinions after listening to the studio version...I’m guessing you already have. In the end though, it’s all about your own musical preferences and that’s why we come to your channel. I already have my opinion and want to hear YOUR opinion. I like that you dove into the background vocals at the end of the song. It’s a signature of this song that people tend to love or hate without even knowing what it is that they love or hate. They’ll stick with you regardless. That do do do do do do will be with you all day and into tomorrow. It might even pop up next week for no reason!

They're not so much flat but using multiple modes. And yes it's just like this on the album. In fact I like this performance much more. And as far as performance. MTV forbade them to play standing up with pissed Eddie Vedder off to no end. At one point in one song he stood on his stool so he wouldn't be off the mark but could still stand up. He wound up falling off the stool and it was AWESOME!

Thank you Joe for the encouraging words I appreciate them, and thank you for having an open mind in regards to what I said about this performance. I actually listened to the studio recording of this song after I posted this video, and the "do do do do do do do's" are about 5 -10 cents flat on the studio album as well.....which means they are intentionally going flat on purpose. As I said in the review, if they're doing that intentionally, then that's absolutely BRILLIANT!!! Singing that part intentionally slightly flat makes it stick out, which makes it memorable....and it worked. TRUST ME It worked...it's been over a week since I filmed that reaction and I STILL have those "do do do do do do do's" stuck in my head. So kudos to Pearl Jam for coming up with that idea and executing it so amazingly well. Just out of curiosity, if you don't mind me asking, what persuaded you to watch the whole thing? Thank you again for watching, hope you enjoyed the show. DH

7.8??????????? 🤔 No song with the lyric "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life. I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but why? Why? Why? Can't it be, can't it be mine?" Should ever get less than a 9. I joke, but in all seriousness, musical taste is musical taste. You have no need to apologize for that. The background vocals sound very similar on the studio version. My ear is not sharp enough to say definitively if it's identical, but damn close. I have not perceived any of these live performances as low energy. More subdued than jumping around on stage like they did during Pink Pop? Sure. But a song like Black (one of the great break up songs of all time) is a song about mood and emotion. It would have been bizarre and out of place if it were played with that kind of energy. I suppose one area of friendly disagreement is that when I consume music I primarily do it for the music. What I mean by that is first, second, third, and fourth on my checklist is how did I like the song. Do I want to hear it again? Does it speak to me? Perhaps its because when I listen to music, 9 times out of 10 I don't have the video. I'm in my car or on an ipod, etc.. I love live concerts because they bring out the variations in songs. And when I am actually there, it gives me a chance to connect with the band in person. I agree that when a band plays the notes without trying to connect it falls flat. But I don't need the guys jumping around for the connection. The call and answers, the eye contact with people in the crowd. Changing facial expressions all do the trick. And I think one other thing to take into consideration from live clips is that PJ shows are typically well over 2 hours. Some over 3 hours. In the audience you feel the energy ebb and flow. The songs themselves have ups and downs. It's hard to evaluate the energy of a performance overall from a single song. In fact we have seen videos where you paused early and commented on something (in this video it was Eddie's subdued vocals) only to see the song pull a 180. Once again, thanks for the reaction. Good stuff.

If you wanna see energy during an acoustic show watch state of love and trust, jeremy, or porch from this same set. Nobody rocked unplugged like pearl jam. This song is just a more subdued song. The studio is electric but not exactly a rocker. Although other live versions end with the most amazing solos by mr. Mike Mccready that I'm sure you would really enjoy.

Dave Abruzesse on drums. Best move PJ ever made was hiring him. Unfortunately, their worst move was firing him only 2 albums later. His work on Vs is legendary and he brought such energy to this band live. Matt Cameron was probably the best they could do as a replacement, but Dave will always remain the best musician Eddie ever played with.

Nice review, saw others hit same points on the do do do parts sticking in your head like with Letterman. Funny story, one time going to the river I played this album in the truck with Dad, let’s just say he wasn’t a fan. But he would comment and the do do do’s was one that stuck, whenever I would mention PJ he would bring that up 😂. This is a sad song, ultimate break up song, think the lyrics and feeling by Eddie when he sings it is what really gets people behind this song. As far as going flat I believe it is on purpose to give that emotional sad tone to compliment the lyrics. Eddie did this song as a tribute for Chris Cornell after he passed where he breaks down crying at the we belong together part at the end. There is always a lot of emotion from Eddie and the band in this song. I know you are focusing a lot on the technical parts, but afterwards I would recommend grabbing a drink sitting back and relax, crank up the sound, and just enjoy it as well without the camera.

I'm pretty sure the doo doo doo doo doo doo doos sounded basically the same as they always do. Eddie does them on the studio version and the tune isn't noticeably different to my non-musician ear. This is one of my favourite songs because of the lyrics and the depth of emotion, but if that's not your thing, it's not your thing. I love a lot of PJ's slower songs and acoustic stuff but I suspect you wouldn't be into them.

It was exactly as planned except for playing on rented instruments because theirs didn't get there on time. It was intentional. The audience now sings that part because this song is known worldwide. You must have been living under a rock to have missed it. It's still huge 30 years later. Buskers do it like crazy. I can't believe you overlooked the note Eddie held just to argue the flat of the chorus. Check out "State of Love and Trust" from the same show. And "Porch" is crazy too. And yes to what was said below. Manzarek hand picked Eddie to sing for The Doors when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's all on KZfaq.

Well I was very distracted by the pitch, but like I said it was consistently like 10 - 15 cents flat....which isn't a lot, but it is noticeable. I just listened to the studio version yesterday, and it's flat on the studio recording as well...which leads me to believe my theory is correct. They intentionally are slightly flat on purpose....which is absolutely BRILLIANT!!! So kudos to PJ for having the foresight to break from tradition and intentionally sing just slightly off key...it actually worked and made the "do do do do do do do's" extremely memorable. I filmed this 5 days ago....and that part is STILL stuck in my head....along with "It's O.k." that I did a while back. This is an older upload, so you've probably already watched the studio version at some point. But, this song is meant to grow on you. Because I'm soo in tune with every note of the song, I can recognize all the subtle greatness that each note brings in this lower volume acoustic version. In the studio version each note is much more audible. There's also a piano added that added to the atmosphere. But eventhough, this is really organic feeling, it's extremely precise, delicately precise. Every note contributes to the emotion and buildup. But I gotta push back with the energy thing. There was nothing challenging about Eddie's energy. He was in a trance and was completely singing out of raw emotion. Also, this has a hook if you listen more. This is a must acquired taste. Some songs you can't just say not my taste and move on. This is one of them. The build up and crescendo of this song will grab you. The raw yet precise emotions in sync with the structure of the song will grab you. Trust me.

The bassist and rhythm guitarist backup vocals are based on the piano melody of producer Rick Parasher's piano part in the original production. The flat notes are by design. The whole show was very high energy but Black is not a high energy song. Eddie had a chest infection and they had only that day to rehearse the show before taping. If you watch the entire show in one sitting I think you’ll enjoy it. I was a little bothered by how much you were stuck on the backing vocals and seemed to completely miss the raw emotion pouring out of Eddie.
@THEDavidHeretic

Sorry you were bothered by what you think you heard, I suggest going back and listening to what I said a little more carefully. I very clearly stated..."If these backing vocals are intentionally 5 - 10 cents flat....then that is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!! That makes them stand out....which makes them memorable." I started out being critical, but the more I heard them I started to realize they were consistently flat every single time.....which led me to wonder if it was intentional. THAT'S why the "do do do do do do do's" are the part that stick in everyones mind....and THAT'S what creates the HOOK....and THAT is what makes the song memorable. THAT right there is PURE GENIUS!

I'm guessing you didn't watch the entire video, especially the part where I very clearly stated "it sounds like they're 5 - 10 cents flat EVERY SINGLE TIME"...followed up with "I wonder if they're doing that ON PURPOSE"...followed up with "If they are intentionally going 5 - 10 cents flat every single time, then that is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!"...followed by "If they're going flat on purpose that is BEYOND BRILIANT...because that will make that part MEMORABLE, due to the fact that it will STAND OUT!!!" Later, on my own, I listened to the studio recorded version of this same song. I discovered that they do, in fact, go intentionally flat on the studio recording....thus proving my theory correct. They are BRILLIANT for going intentionally flat on those parts, because it DID make it stand out...thus making it memorable. To this day I STILL have that part rattling around in my head. So kudos to Pearl Jam for having the foresight to do something absolutely brilliant, and make it work. You say I'm "literally the only channel I’ve heard with any criticism just saying" Have you ever asked yourself...why every other "reactor" out there "loves" this song? Better yet, why every other "reactor" seems to "love" every single song they hear, or video they watch? It's very simple...because all they care about is getting their numbers up. They don't care if they're honest, they don't care about their integrity, all they care about is getting as many subscribers as possible so they can get monetized. They do this by making sure they "love" everything they hear and see...thus making all the people who watch their reaction video happy...thus getting another subscriber based completely on a lie. I refuse to be like that. I will never give a fake reaction and say that I love something, when I actually don't like it, just so I can get more subscribers. I'm not in this to get monetized, I'm not here to lie to the people. I'm hear to give the viewers, especially The Fanbase, something different: a reaction channel that is ACTUALLY honest and genuine in it's reactions. As I have always said, I would much rather have 500 Fanbase members who actually love what I do, than 500,000 subscribers who joined up based on a lie, and who honestly don't care about what I said...as long as they were happy with the lie. Just saying... I know every other "reactor" "loves" this song, and offer absolutely no insight into their reactions....mainly because they have no insight or knowledge to be able to delve into anything musical. As a professional musician of over 30 years, who has studied music since the age of 3, I choose to do the opposite. I choose to use my 40+ years of knowledge in music, and my 30+ experience in the music industry, and put them to good use. I choose to be objective, and look at music and performances from a musicians and performers standpoint. I choose to give credit where credit is due, and to point out where it's not due...in the realms of theory, musicianship, execution, pitch, tone, chordal structure, use of time signatures, tempo, and dynamics. I have seen other "reactors" do this video...the same "reactors" that "love" every single thing they watch. Sorry I'm just not going to be like that. I have said from the beginning of this channel that I will ALWAYS be honest in my reactions, and I will never give fake reactions or opinions about what I watch and hear, just so I get my subscriber numbers up. What I will offer is genuine, honest reactions...as well as some insight as to why I made the decisions. In closing, allow me to apologize for hurting your feelings. I know the truth sometimes can be quite painful to hear, and I'm sorry that I insulted your emotional status by being honest about what I saw and heard. I can only imagine how traumatizing it must have been to hear someone actually give an honest opinion about a band you love, as well as a song you love. I recommend enjoying those other channels, who "love" every single thing they see and hear, and are willing to lie to their viewers just so they can get another subscriber. I will not change what I do, who I am, or how I react to what I see and hear. I will not insult the intelligence of the viewers with fake reactions, or lie to them just so I can boost my numbers. Lastly I will not compromise my own integrity, because in the end that's all a man is worth. DH

@THEDavidHeretic 3 жыл бұрын
Not quite what I said. I actually said I was disappointed in the KISS Unplugged show. There was no energy in that show, no stage presence. It was boring, other than when Ace and Peter came out. Yes I did say it was held back...as is every other acoustic show. Due to the fact that they are all sitting, playing acoustic instruments, in a small intimate setting...of course it's going to be held back. This is why I've never been a fan of the Unplugged series, it's just not my thing. I prefer live shows with lots of energy, crowd interaction, and intensity. Yes, the guys singing the "do do do do do do do's" were flat by about 5 - 10 cents. That is undeniable. I also stated that since it was consistent and constant, it MAY be intentional...meaning they are singing 5 - 10 cents flat on purpose. I also stated that if they are in fact sing flat like that intentionally, then that is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! That made the "do do do do do do do's" stick out, which in turn made them extremely memorable. I still have that part stuck in my head, and it's been well over a week since I filmed that reaction. So I listened to the studio version of this song, turns out my suspicions were correct they do sing those "do do do do do do do's" intentionally flat. Not to the point that it sounds bad, only 5 - 10 cents flat...just enough to stick out and be noticeable, thus making it MEMORABLE. For the record, I NEVER said the performance was bad, or poor, or that it sucked. I understand you want to defend a band you absolutely love, but please understand I never put them down. Quite the opposite actually, I paid them a number of compliments...just as I have in all my other Pearl Jam reaction videos. In closing I hope this clears up any confusion you may have had, in regards to anything you may have misunderstood. In the future, before you decide to jump on anyone, please make sure you actually heard what you think you heard, and not what you wanted to hear. DH

First off, how is what I'm saying negative? You must have missed the part where I said "If this is intentional, then that's ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!" That's right, I called them brilliant, because I did listen to the studio version, and they are intentionally doing the "do do do do do do do's" about 5-10 cents flat. Like I said, that makes it stick out, which makes it MEMORABLE. Absolutely Brilliant. I always make sure to mention the aspects that I enjoy, as well as the parts I wasn't a fan of. Secondly, I would be more than happy to say exactly what I said in the video to Eddie in person. I've never been one to shy away from speaking my mind and voicing my opinion, especially in person. That way the person hears it directly from me, which would eliminate hearsay. Lastly, it's clear to me that you have not watched all the videos of Pearl Jam that I have done so far. If you had, you would see that I have given them WAY more compliments than criticisms. I estimate a 4:1 ratio of compliments to criticisms, so they have absolutely earned my respect as musicians, songwriters, and performers. You're probably not used to reactors on KZfaq actually being honest and giving their honest opinions and thoughts on what they watch. Sorry, but I'm not going to be one of those fake reactors who love every single thing they see and hear. I'm going to give my honest opinion and thoughts about everything I watch and hear. The good news is, if you don't like what I do, there are literally hundreds of fake reactors you can watch and enjoy, who are all more than happy to lie to you to make you happy so you'll subscribe to their channel...because that's all they care about. Feel free to enjoy them, and please be happy. DH
