Technically, Latino is anyone born in any country with a Romance-derived language and culture. I've heard Spaniards calling themselves latinos, and one time an Italian was complaining that they are "the original latinos". It's just that the USA wrongly established the term for Latin Americans (excluding Québécois, even though French is also a latin language)
@Kylopod5 жыл бұрын
@@mightyswordmaster According to a book I read on the history of the Spanish language, the first people to use the term in its contemporary sense were French colonists, who wanted to emphasize commonality with the Spanish (and possibly Portuguese) speakers in the Americas. But by now it's nonstandard to apply the term to French or Italian or Romanian speakers, or even people from Spain (though the term "Hispanic" is occasionally used there).
@santiagoddld47215 жыл бұрын
@mightyswordmaster; according to Merriam-Webster, a Latino is “a native or inhabitant of Latin America”, and a Hispanic is “of or relating to the people, speech, or culture of Spain” (being in this case the language Spanish).
@xxjr8axx5 жыл бұрын
Santiago DdLD kind of, more then likely the term hispanic comes from the roman province of Hispania. Im taking a educated guess here but I would think that latino was originally used to indicate if you spoke a language descended from latin, and latin america kind of fell into that category after the spanish conquered it. For me it really doesn't matter if someone calls themselves latin or hispanic.

Technically speaking, Quebecquers and Métis DO are Latinos, in that they speak French - a language that descends from Latin. As David says, for some reason the French-speaking folks from Haiti, Martinique, French Guiana, Quebec and Louisiana's Bayou are usually excluded from the definition of "Latino" whereas the Portuguese-speaking Brazilians are usually included in it, which doesn't make any sense, at least from an etymology viewpoint. As for culture, Quebec is basically an Ancien Regime society that got transplanted to the New World, so their culture would be closer to, say, Latin America's during colonial period. Louisiana's culture was basically plantation-based post-Revolution France until it got Anglo majority, I guess Haiti would be like had it not been for the slave revolt, now it's culturally more like a piece of Africa in the Americas, the African influence there is even stronger than at Brazil's Bahia region

The problem, if it is one, is an American invention. At some time or other people from Spanish or Portuguese speaking countries of the Americas and their descendants began to be referred to in the USA as "Latinos". The word has spread a little bit but actually outside of the USA most of these people would refer to themselves as Mexican, Colombian, Cuban, Peruvian, Brazilian etc rather than 'latino'. The confusion for Americans is that the vast majority of 'Latinos' living in the USA are ethnically mestizo coming from Mexico, Guatemala etc. This has fixed in the American mind what a 'latino' looks like. The reality is that across the Americas there is wide range of ethnicities. There are the people of Mayan or mixed Mayan/European in Central America, there are people of African descent in Cuba, Colombia, Brazil etc. Sao Paolo Brazil has a huge Japanese community. Argentinians and Uruguayans are mostly European of Italian and Spanish descent. In the south of Brazil you get blond haired, blue eyed people of German, Ukrainian etc descent. These are just examples. So the problem is if you don't look to an American what they imagine a Mexican looks like they have trouble with seeing you as 'latino'. Which is silly of course because there are Mexicans of pure European descent who probably don't look 'Latino' to Americans. I've even heard American 'latinos' saying they didn't know there was such thing as a black, white or Asian latino. Maybe it's time to drop the word altogether.

We say "Vos", our grandfathers loved Carlos Gardel, and my uncles loved the Rock 'n' Roll from the 60's in that country and me I just love Soda Stereo, from Argentina.

The idea that someone has to be born in the U.S. to be classified as white is preposterous. I'm "Hispanic" white complexion, brown hair, green eyes, my phenotypes are European like for all intended purposes but the fact that I emigrated from Latin America and have an accent or have Spanish last name, then I am not considered "white" The funny thing is I've been to Australia, Europe, Africa and Asia and never once, people asked my race, or wondering if I was white or not, people saw me as a white Male and not need to verify my color or origin, only in the U.S. I get the questions like, wow! you look white, I thought you were white, you can pass for white.... It used to bothered me, but now I don't even pay attention. People in the U.S. are fixated on race and it is what is.....

Hey, I’ve traveled through Chile, Peru, Columbia, Venezuela. Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Guatemala. There are thousands of white people in all those countries. In Mexico City there are over one million Americans living there and most are white. Americans have children in foreign countries and are registered at the US embassies as US citizens. Argentina is well known for having a large German population escaping WW2. I worked with several Chileans who were blonde, blue eyes, from German descent. Friends in Mexico from Europe, US, Canada, and even India. And by Europe I mean UK, Ireland, Germany, Poland, and Greece. It’s very narrow minded of some people to classify people as to where they come from. Today’s world is more diverse and interconnected than we have ever seen before.

With the background you gave: yes you’re both Latino and Hispanic since you’re from Argentina and therefore also an immigrant. Latinos are also those from the Americas that come from countries and regions that are of French background like the places you questioned and Quebec for example. Racially you’re white. Latin America is a mix of everything and there are many like you from Mexico to Tierra Del Fuego being ashkenazi Jewish Latino/Hispanic and living in the USA Today! But many Americans will still not understand this because it’s too complicated for them since it doesn’t fit in a box

I just wrote and performed a One-Man Show called "Para Pendejo No Se Estudia" addressing my Heritage and ethnicity. I'm not an immigrant, but my grandmother was. I am both Latino and Hispanic, I grew up speaking Spanish at home, but in the US I pass for white and it's something I struggled with in my youth because the rest of my family is darker than me. My grandmother was very dark. But I also have to address the situation often.

I'm from Brazil , colonized by Portugal, therefore I speak Portuguese , you pointed it out that Hispanics are from Spanish cultures , Hispanic in my opinion are countries that speaks Spanish as their mother language , Latin America are all the majority of countries that speaks languages derived from Latin , hence the name latino. United states and Canada speaks English therefore they're not considered Latinos , it's safe to say that you are both Hispanic and latino, I'm latino also but not Hispanic since Spanish I'd not my primary language
@fgsaramago5 жыл бұрын
No, the term Latino doesn't have to do with the Latin language. The term Latino, used to describe south Americans has to do with the Latin sails used by the Portuguese, which were the technological innovation that allowed for the exploration of such far away (from Europe) places as south america

Hispania is the ancient name for Spain (you can see this in old maps and even Mexico was originally called by the spanish "Nueva Hispania"). In Spanish a "Hispano" is someone from Spain, if you are Mexican and you speak Spanish you are a "Hispano Parlante" (literally "spanish speaker" and that of course we are), a latin american is someone from those countries that speak a language with Latin as a root, so Portugese and French are included, so as far as I can remember only Belize and Suriname, technically speaking, are not part of Latin America. I am Mexican I am for sure not "Hispanic" but if that's what you would consider me because you don't know what it means it doesn't bother me, I am definately latin american.
@gamir973 жыл бұрын
I am from Argentina and I don't refer myself as latino because.. it is used in a derogatory way. Latino is all people who speaks a language derived from Latin. So , Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Romania, and all the north, center, and south american countries that speak portuguese, spanish or french. But the english spikers never used the term for the european countries, only for the latin americans. So I see it as way to lower us. The etnicity parte is this: you can have white, brown, black, asian, natives , that are Hispanic and latin, because it has nothing to do with race, but with language.

A Danish/Norwegian author one said, as a joke (but a joke with some truth), that people from my home town of Bergen, Norway are put together with spare parts and terrifying when they work. After 1000 years or more as a major port, with the sea as the only useful communication route, the "native" population is a mix of Norwegian (mainly of western and northern stock), with almost everyone carrying some Icelandic, Russian, Finnish, Sami, Scottish, Portuguese, Dutch, Spanish, Baltic/Belorussian Jewish and English ancestry (to mention some). So, welcome, Mr. Pakman. Once you master the Bergen dialect (Dutch/low German-influenced), you’re qualified as a local as well!

People still don't understand what Hispanic or Latino is. The term Hispanic comes from "Hispania",name gaven by the Romans when they conquered Spain (they called it Hispania). In other words Hispanic is everything related to Spain and related to all the countries conquered by Spain, therefore, Hispanic is a CULTURE and has NOTHING to do with race. Now, Latino is related to countries (and people) who have a language that belongs to the Latin family,and Spanish is one of them. In other words,a Latin American is a person who has Spanish as a first language and was born in the Americas. A Spaniard is a Latin person who was born in Europe. Technically French, Portuguese, Rumanians and Italians are Latin too.
@hyogaiceheart2 жыл бұрын
I think the problem is that "Hispanic" and "Latino" are just U.S. census bureau terms that try to categorize people by race/ethnicity and fail miserably because Latin America is so diverse racially and culturally. It all becomes even more complex if you add Spain to the mix. That's why I started putting "other" in all census documents, and any document that asks my "race."

Hispanic is a cultural heritage coming from Spain which is European. Latino is in reference to the Latin languages i.e. (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Romanian, Catalan, Italian.) which belonged to the overall Indo-European language family, dominate Central and South America that's why they call it Latin America. Hispanic and Latino are not races. David would be: Languages: Spanish, English Nationality: Argentine/American Ethnicity: Ashkenazi Jewish Race: Caucasian Species: Homo Sapien

Though Ashkenazi Jews are considered "white" in America, remember not all Jews are Ashkenazi. I am Ashkenazi. My brothers' wives are Yemenite and Moroccan and would not be considered "white" by American standards, but Middle Eastern. Then of course there are Ethiopian Jews who in America would be called black. Here in Israel, there are some racists who say if you're one ethnicity of Jew rather than another, you aren't a "real" Jew. Depending on where you go, Ethiopian Jews aren't "black" while Somali and Sudani are. It's a strange thing. As for the Immigrant thing. I was born in Tel-Aviv, but raised since the age of two-weeks in America. I consider myself American first and English is my first language. I've been living in Israel now for over 12 years and served in the IDF and still consider myself an American immigrant to Israel, despite being born here, so everything is subjective.
