I gave critic earlier for just top down view of the board and the pieces for the overview part of one of the 4 squares reviews. This is much improved in this one because of the tilted camera which allows kind of 3d view and includes showing the pieces closer to the camera. Nice one! 4 Squares reviews are now close to perfection.

The Anno video games are basically supply chain management games. So it sounds like they did a pretty good job making a board game like them.

I find this pattern is true for most games regardless of the game's weight/complexity. The eventual gains are just more apparent I think in heavier games as you drop from 3 hours to 2 or whatever rather than in simpler games as you drop from 30 minutes to 20 or so.

Just tried this game last weekend and enjoyed it. I'm debating whether to buy it now or wait for it to hit the bargain bins. What it really needs, though, is an insert that keeps all those tiles in order and makes setup quick. That would significantly improve the play experience.

So I finally received my copy this weekend and I warned my friends that this is a long game and that is one of the major complaints about it from revues online, turns out every single one of my friends thought the opposite, that they never manage to do the end game technologies because the game is too short and ends too soon lol

If you've played the pc game, this is a perfect board game version. Its almost identical just with board game mechanics. I loved it, one of the best "euro" type games iv played. The engine (industry) building part the same as the pc game is what really makes it interesting & there is 0 "take that" in the game, you can't affect other players industry

@brettacton1573
@brettacton1573 3 жыл бұрын
@@ClockworkWyrm its certainly theme heavy in terms of that whole engine building.. build this factory so you can make this resource , then use said resource to build another factory etc which is exactly what the game is... So if the theme is really a put off might be worth trying at a games cafe first or a friends copy?... But theres defo no take that, you have almost 0 interaction except trade which the other person cant block... Having said that, if you want it, & theres a chance your wife might like it then for £35 compared to the price of other much smaller games i reckon this is worth the gamble... Thought my other half would hate it but turned out to be one of her favourites which im chuffed about!

Everything I see about this game makes me want to play it more. Sadly the people I typically play with are not up for a game that takes multiple plays to discover the hidden beauty of a game. Basically if the game doesn't grab them the first or second play there will not be a third.

It is indeed a very fun game, I think 7.5-8 score is fair. I personally love the core "tech tree" system, it really shows that Martin Wallace is an outstanding designer capable of creating beautifully simple systems that provide a lot of variety. I also really like how weirdly interactive this game is for a euro, and while you can't directly mess with your opponents (trading is net positive for both players involved) I am always interested in what other people are doing with their turns. I also have one bigger negative and two small ones. I really don't like how random some of the bonuses you get from your population cards and also from old world tiles are. Getting an engineer, as an example, is HUGE! In one game, one of the three players got 3 free engineers from cards, I got one and the last player got zero, and getting those engineers is not only vital but a BIG action/time investment as well. Also, getting an "upgraded" industry, a ship or two blue workers an an old world exploration bonus is very handy, where as getting a level 1 dock is practically useless - so worthless you can get one for free (although you need to still do the action). The small negatives include the terminology and what I presume to be a pretty crappy translation and also the presentation. I don't like that your workforce are called workers, while the blue worker specifically is... a worker. This is not a big deal, as my group just renamed then labourers and moved on. I would also like that the presentation of the "tech tree" also showed which tier a resource is from - maybe even having "the grid" actually presented as a handy tree structure. The game is very fun though, and I'm more than happy to add this one to my collection. Very much looking forward to playing some more!
@ClockworkWyrm
@ClockworkWyrm 3 жыл бұрын
I get what you mean about the blue "workers" being called simply "workers". To avoid confusion you could, alternatively to your solution, refer to all cubes as "employees" while still referring to blue cubes as "workers" if that fits a group's playstyle better.

I really have to agree with everything said about the game in this video except for the idea that Zee mentioned about colour coding the technology by level. I enjoy that the game doesn't hold players' hands and that the first, second and third games are all about learning the world in which you are playing. As was mentioned in the video, this game has a very rewarding learning curve and it comes with a lot of personal discovery. Watching this video reminded me a lot of the post-game analysis that my gaming group had when we finished our first game. It was a very engaging and thought-provoking discussion about the mechanisms which is one of my favourite parts of gaming. Thanks for a great review. p.s. Wendy is awesome.

I love the pc series, have played it since 1604 A.D. up to DoD Venice. There’s a ton of satisfaction making the complex industry connections happen. I don’t know if doing that is satisfying without the visual bling or the pressure put on by the game’s various triggers, like pirates and demanding citizens. This looks like a spreadsheet… does it feel like working on a spreadsheet? Does the look detract from the pleasure of playing the game? The panel recommends it but I think it’s a wait and see.

The system of Festivals seems broken, players who are clever and work out ways to exhaust the board before reset, are not rewarded, in all of our playthroughs, resetting with 2-6 plausible turns worked out getting 50% more score in the end, rewarding the casual player. Our group implemented two house rules, everyone had a maximum of 8 festivals, (pre-season & mid season) and once they used them up, they were done, game ended much faster for some, and played out longer for others, but it was 'fair', Also, empty Expedition cards were -1 point, else players were taking 3 over and over, just to empty the pool and deny all other players any.
@12345678abracadabra
@12345678abracadabra Жыл бұрын
kinda just sounds like the 'good' players were playing badly. maybe they shouldn't be exhausting the board as it is not by design. they mentioned in the review that the most productive play is not the most efficient play.
@TheBrokenMeeple

Sounds OK but the variable game length would be problematic and games need to grab people on their first play, not their third. This doesn't look like a game I would enjoy teaching to new players all the time. I like Zees idea about the colour coding, this game could use a little bit of hand holding, it's a KOSMOS game, not a Mindclash game, it should be more accessible to a wider audience by nature of the publishers other games.
@JimmySquiky

It grabbed us in our first play and my girlfriend loves it to pieces, she rarely asks to play a game again right away but for Anno 1800 she did. As a big caveat I'd say that we were advantage by the fact that we both played the video game. If you have played the video game I think the issue they had with the production chains not being really clear go away because you already know them.
