Also, my son has loved Saxon Math from the beginning. We didn’t always do every single problem though. If he understood the new concept, then we would just do a couple of the problems in the lesson practice section and then only pick the odd or even problems in the mixed practice section.

Everyone I've seen mention A Gentle Feast has loved it. I've peeked into Tuttle Twins history and it reminds me a lot of Notgrass Our Star Spangled Story the way the knowledge is presented in a story-type narrative to the learners. I think it's a great approachable way to teach history to elementary kids. We've used Progeny Press lit guides before and they were pretty enjoyable! I'm super intrigued with the Cold Case Christianity book! Will definitely be looking into it for my 5th grader as well. Looks like it's going to be a great year :)

I love seeing all the curriculum you’ve chosen! I also have a 5th grader this year. We switched to Saxon Math, along with Nicole the Math Lady, last year for my older two and it was one of the best decisions we’ve made! It took a ton of pressure off of me to teach them math so I could work with my younger two, and also allowed them to be more independent which they liked. It is a very dense book so we only did the even numbers for Mixed Practice, and also skipped the Warm-Up most days. Otherwise they would have spent way too long on their math lesson. But overall we have really liked it. I am anxious to hear how it works out for your son! 🙂

Great to hear! Yes, we switched my older two kids mid-year and just did evens. I love that Nicole has that option on the website! Math would take forever if we did every single warm up and practice and lesson problem! 😅

I always look forward to seeing what curricula you’ve picked out. I have a 5th grader and I’ve contemplated Saxon for when she’s done with Singapore Math so I am very curious how you will like Saxon and using Nicole the Math Lady! I’m also excited to see your picks for your older kids, I’ve learned a lot about elementary curricula but I’ve got to get my game plan going for the upper grades LOL! So fun

I have a friend who wrapped up 5th grade. They used Saxon math + Nicole the Math Lady. She absolutely loved it and so did her son. The bonus is not having to worry about grading the math!

Thank you so much for sharing your curriculum choices for your 5th Grader! My son is also in 5th Grade and we are teaching many of the same things! Question: This is our first year with Writing & Rhetoric, so I’ve chosen to begin with book 2 - Narrative I. Do you typically get through two books in one year? I have a reluctant/struggling writer (great reader, though), so I’m just curious how much I should expect him to complete within our school year. I appreciate your thoughts! ❤

With Writing & Rhetoric, they say each book is a semester, but I just do one for the year. I like to rotate LA subjects so they don’t do every subject every day and if we did 2 books, we’d have to be doing this every day. I feel like we’d never get to anything else if we spent all day on LA! Haha. With math, yes, we are only doing half of the Saxon problems each day! Nicole the Math Lady has the option to choose either evens or odds. I should have mentioned that in the video! I know most families that do Saxon do it that way!

Hi, do you have any thoughts on The Good and Beautiful Math versus Saxon? My 2nd grader has used Math With Confidence for K, 1st, and 2nd, but we are making a switch. We've been trying Saxon 2 and TGTB Math 2 for a couple of months now. I like the way Saxon teaches a little better, but we enjoy TGTB lessons more. Also, TGTB is so much easier to implement, which is really important because we are in a very busy season right now.

I also have a 5th-ish grader. I am not overly fond of "grade levels". Math: She does MLLE (Masterbooks) and Easy Peasy Math. Language Arts: We attend a CC co-op and she is in the Essentials class. Reading: I have assigned 5 fiction and 5 non-fiction and she uses Not Consumed's Reading Journal We are pretty interest-led on everything else. She loves horses and reads, reports, and draws a lot in that topic. That has been her "Science" the last couple weeks.

How exciting! I hope and pray your family has a wonderful first year learning and growing together! As far as a curriculum to get, that’s really a hard question to answer as choosing the right curriculum for your family is a very individualized decision. Every family is going to have a different answer… It really depends on what type of curriculum you want, there are many different styles and ways to homeschool. Many families enjoy The Good and the Beautiful when first switching from public school as it’s a pretty traditional approach that is affordable. I prefer a Charlotte Mason method curriculum called A Gentle Feast, but that method is very different from public school, so it takes a mindset shift to be comfortable with it. My Father’s World is another great option. Abeka and BJU are two very solid options that are used in Christian schools - very traditional approach, also quite expensive though. I do have a couple videos that talk about how I choose curriculum and things to think about to help you decide. Hope this helps! @@TheEclecticHomeschooler thank you so much! I know this is a tough one to answer! I really like your approach you use and see this being something we do in our home. Thank you for the advice on maybe starting with a full curriculum then transitioning. That's a good idea!

Have your kids done Writing & Rhetoric independently or is this something you teach? I'm starting with the very first book with my 4th grader this year and not sure if i need to be involved much.

I would think a 4th grader should be able to do most of it independently! My 5th and 7th graders will do it independently this year.
