The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

OMG! What a simple, elegant performance, building slowly to a brilliant climax. I love how still her arms for the first 8 measures. Her voice just flows and flows. There's no Las Vegas back phrasing in this spectacular Eydie Gorme performance.

Edyie was one of the greatest vocal artists of all time. Her range and power in expressing the full spectrum of emotions in the lyrics of a song was phenomenal. She needs to be in the top ten of any list of female singers. Often, Edyie isn't even mentioned or remembered, as much as she should be, such an incredible performer.

When I was 14 and into rock and roll, I heard Eydie do this very tune on either the Merv Griffin or Sullivan show. It was the first time that a "classic" song with a big band arrangement such as this one piqued my interest, and I've never forgotten it. She knocked it out of the park and I've been a fan ever since.

The trilogy of American singers … Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and Barbara Streisand. I used to believe that these were the most powerful, expressive voices in American popular music. Frank Sinatra’s Songs for Swinging Lovers album, Tony Bennett’s I Left My Heart in San Francisco album, and Barbara Streisand’s Funny Girl album. But now that I found this song by Eddie Gorme, I have to include her too.

Little more can be added to everything said in the comments... I love this Lady of the song... Her elegance and knowing how to be on stage were admirable. As I said a few days ago, it is almost strange to see her perform without her usual artistic partner, who was also her husband, Steve Lawrence, but alone or in company (her recordings in Spanish with Los Panchos conquered audiences in Latin America and Spain ), it is always a real pleasure to see and listen to her.

From the 1965 musical "On a Clear Day, You Can See Forever". Book and Lyrics: Alan Jay Lerner. Music: Burton Lane. Lane isn't as famous as some other Broadway composers, but he wrote excellent music and worked with some of the best lyricists. Lerner, E.Y. Harburg ("Finian's Rainbow") and Frank Loesser ("The Lady's in Love with You") to name three. Eydie Gormé was a familiar presence on TV in my childhood, usually with her husband, Steve Lawrence. At the time, I had no idea that she had a whole other (extremely successful) career singing Latin American music in Spanish.

Few people know she used to sing in spanish too. With mexican trío Los Panchos and was a huge sucess. Also the duo of her and portorican singer Dany Rivera was another major hit. Even she was born in NYC was a sephardic jew descendant and this was a homage to her roots.

I first heard Eydie's performance of this song about 35 years ago while listening to an AM "music of your life" radio station and it stopped me in my tracks - and, indeed, at first I thought it was Barbra. And then the DJ said, "Eydie Gorme" and I've been captivated by her voice ever since. This is a very special performance that sends chills down my spine and makes me tear up at times. Outstanding!

Barbra sang it in the 1970 film. But I think Edie’s version is in a class by itself. I must hear Barbara Harris’ version again from the OBC recording.

The uptempo swingy arrangement is all wrong for the mood and lyrics of the song. Would be much more effective with a quiet solo piano. But Eydie is superb here. Amazing breath control and technique! Can't figure out where she even breathes in those last few notes. Thanks for posting

Oddly enough with just the piano the piano would be too pronounced and distracting. I like the orchestrations and they up the energy level out of moody self-pity.

@@poetcomic1 But it would better suit the actual lyrics and what the song is expressing. And a solo piano doesn't distract the way a full orchestra does
