This was a blast from the past! I never owned one, but a good friend from school did. He lived in a close, so traffic was minimal and we could play in the road. We never used the steering post, but fired it up - and nobody in the early 1970's got into a tizz about schoolkids playing about with matches or methylated spirits - and just let it go. Great fun!

@monteceitomoocher 7 ай бұрын
If you lived in a 'close' you were slightly better off than average then, your friend probably had well to do parents, bet he got the number ten meccano set as well!, very happy days though, when the world was normal.

Great fun they indeed were. I too never owned the engine featured on the video here, but did have a stationary Mamod engine that I had hours of fun with. In an attempt to make this engine "mobile", I fitted it out with wheels, steering linkage and a pulley drive system made from Meccano. With an over filled meths burner creating huge flames that licked out from the sides of the burner box, the engine moved pretty well under its own power, but was well and truly defeated come the slightest incline.

@@jonduggan7433 still do, we sixties and seventies kids had our fights like everyone else but, we wouldn't even dream of taking our knife and sticking it in another person, it was unthinkable, scores were settled there and then with fists if required, of course what the government media and cops don't tell you is that knife crime isn't committed by 'us' if you know what i mean.

Terrific work and what a cool little toy that could NEVER be sold to children today! Makes me miss the good old days when a kid could walk into a nickel and dime store and get a cap gun that shot off real little gunpowder caps or a dart board or a pressure pump water rocket or a chemistry set with real chemicals...glass test tubes and an alcohol lamp. When I was 10 years old, there used to be a mom and pop store in town called Green's where you could buy replacement chemicals, Estes rockets (the big "D" engines!), working steam engines and gasoline powered Cox piston engine airplanes and dragsters. Nobody got hurt, everyone was happy, nobody made pipe bombs from the innards of solid rocket motor cartridges etc...just good adventurous clean fun for curious kids! What happened to us? How did our society, in the name of keeping us safe, take all of the discovery, adventure and fun out of being a child? Electric motor planes...Velcro tipped darts and boards? No mini explosions...no smoke...no little piston engine noises etc...boring!

I've read somewhere that each and every safety measure was applied after an accident, so your memories may be as well just a survivor bias. I agree, though, that we became probably way too safe, but on the other hand - if you want this type of toy for your child and are able to learn them how to use it properly, you can still do it, buy it as a vintage or even make your own (and if you are unable to make it, the same rant may be used - because the previous generation was probably able to make such toys :D ).

As far as I remember the instructions said to remove the plug in the backhead (which should have 2 "handles" yours is missing one) and fill the boiler via the safety valve hole until water runs out of the other hole. There was a specified quantity of meths to use, this was to make sure that the fire ran out before the water did. Later versions had slightly more complex valve gear with a forward / reverse lever. @@TheFabrik

Not a restoration but a custom as you didnt repaint the boiler with the green paint. I used to rebuild these SR's and the TE1 traction engines with the brass and black look. Done a few mods and even built a showmans traction engine after buying the parts direct from Mammod. Great steam engines to get running. I also converted one into a crane which I got the jib and made it work raising and lowering the hook with the flywheel. I love watching these mamod rebuilds. They are well worth keeping around.

Well! this one brought back memories for me. My hometown was Brum my brother and I played with our methylated spirit fueled steam Roller in the back garden for many hours. My stepfathers yard had a huge (to us) concrete area from the house to the garage great for running the engine. We soon discovered that to stop the engine do not try to pick it up by the back wheels they got very hot. See it was educational, we discovered conduction. The only problem we had was stopping mother from drinking the fuel!

I remember my dad finding one in the rubbish and us kids playing with it all the time back in the early 90's and even then they were rare. Awesome to see one actualy going 👍

Absolutely amazing! Ingenuity, technique, imagination and improvisation are unmatched. This shows how good Mamod toys were when originally built. I also work as a repairman. but you guys did a great job. But the video editing is also absolutely excellent. - with some success - but nothing compares to the storytelling videos on this channel.

The ‘before’ had some charm as it looked like what a real steam roller might resemble. Dirty and covered with asphalt. But an amazing restoration anyway.
