THE TAWNY MAN TRILOGY by Robin Hobb - No Spoiler Review
#booktube #tawnyman #realmoftheelderlings
The hardest hitting trilogy of Realm of the Elderlings SO FAR has definitely been The Tawny Man Trilogy by Robin Hobb. Tawny Man takes Realm of the Elderlings to a whole new level, and Robin Hobb continues to boost her way up my ranks as a favorite author of all time. The Tawny Man trilogy contains the books titled Fool's Errand, Golden Fool, and Fool's Fate. Each entry has it's own unique positives and builds upon one another to make Tawny Man by Robin Hobb the best entry in the Realm of the Elderlings so far, and also one of the best fantasy trilogies of all time.

If I remember correctly witted animal companions are usually predators, so I assume prey-animals such fish, rabbits, etc are fine to eat since they're not as "witted"(sentient). You're not gonna see Fitz eat a wolf or a bear, unless he has to.

Fitz and the Fool are the best friendship in fantasy imo. They are so underrated to me. Locke and Jean are an amazing friendship from the Gentleman's Bastards, but this friendship...oh it is so nuanced. I think the first person perspective actually makes it feel so real. You are in the head of Fitz, feeling all the highs, lows and varying emotions. But you only understand on a more base level the Fool's perspective, because the Fool is such an enigma. Fitz's complexity and nuance combined with The Fools mystery and deflection creates an explosion of emotions to the reader.

Yes completely agree that RotE has lots of genuinely hopeful and uplifting moments! It always kinda bothers me when people call this series torture/trauma-porn. Like, yes, I've cried more tears over this series than any other but I'd say the emotional moments are almost always more bittersweet than just bitter. Tawny Man especially is so damn heartbreaking but the ending is also so beautiful ;_; Can't wait to hear your spoilery thoughts!!

I'm so sorry for implying the need for tissues was only for heartbreak! This trilogy had me weeping tears of joy just as often, the reunions here were profound, and they hit the soul just as hard as other events. Possibly one of the most minor, was with Blade, who - not recognizing 'Tom', continues to speak well of Fitz despite the commonly held belief of treachery. I thought that was beautiful. Like other commenters have said, I think this is the pinnacle of RoTE in terms of both quality of writing and emotional pay off. However excellent Fitz and Fool is, however satisfying RWC is, however much closure the entire saga gives - this trilogy - these emotional beats - that climax - simply sublime. *spoiler* (only for Tawny Man - you're good if you haven't read further) Everything between Fitz recovering Fool, to the moment he returns to Prilkop's cave with him - I'm a wreck every time, for the magic systems to crash into each other in such a way as to literally allow them to BE each other?! Holy crap that's some writing right there. AND, as a mother, reading of Patience and Lacey after so many years? That gets me every time too. I could go on about so many moments in this trilogy, but if you've read it, well, you know.

The reunion with Blade was such a nice and subtle thing, but it really was one of those moments of hopes in RotE. I actually like the magic in this series a lot and think it's on par Sanderson's magic and really compliments the series perfectly. Fool's fate ending... probably the most emotional moment in the whole series...
@derrisreaditbefore

@@givex2120 I *absolutely* agree. The way all of those emotional extremes pile on top of each other - you spend those dramatic chapters reeling from one event to the next, and when the story eases a bit for a breather, it's still emotional. I know I've never read anything so piercingly targeted at my heart as Fool's Fate. That it holds up to re-reads, is a gift.

Great thoughts! "Alive" is a great word to describe the series. Tawny Man is where you first start to see that time passes and you come back to familiar people and places it all just evolves so organically. I'd say it's also true with settings as well as characters - for example Buckkeep to me is one of the best realized settings in fantasy. I'm convinced if you dropped me into it I'd know my way around, and she pulls that off with other places as well. Totally agree about GRRM and Hobb. Love their writing and keeping track of all the details is so rewarding. Great point about the Skill and the Wit being the perfect complementary magic systems to this series. They're both about bonds/relationships/communication so it really lets the story transcend the first person narrative in the best way possible. Also to answer one of your questions, (small Farseer spoilers), the Fool always carved things but after touching the skill with his fingertips in Assassin's Quest he can 'sense' what the wood wants to be when he touches it so he kind of gets carried away sometimes.

This was easily my favorite trilogy of the first three which is saying something given how good the first two where. I feel like the suffering she puts here characters through makes the heartwarming moments all the better you feel like they have earned it. I think the reason behind the fools carving is mentioned at some point but it might be in a later book it it is not really a spoiler but i will put in spaces just in case SPOILER. I think it's mentioned that as a child one of his parents made a living selling toys and stuff so he got it from them.

My first Hobb book was actually a gift from my ex-mother-in-law, who said she just grabbed a fantasy book off of a shelf for my birthday. It sat on my personal shelf for well over a year before I read it. Spoiler warning for the trilogy I guess I really liked I think in Book 2 Golden Fool that we got and update about our friends in the Liveship traders through the Fool and Jek (was that her name) and to see Selden Vestrit again. Also about the ending: I liked the happy ending but have 1 major and 1 not so major problem with it: The not so major deal; when Molly and Fitz got back together did say have to do it outside only a little walk away from Molly's children? And the major one: I felt Burrich's death was forced to get Fitz his sweet childhood love Molly back. I mean I even was shocked that the times were so bad on Burrich. He was just in his early 50's I think and already so weak even tho he had quite an active lifestyle and Chade is around 70 and out and about without issue so Burrich's fraility and death was forced to me. But a bunch of very nice characters: basically all of Burrich's brood especially Swift and Chivalry, Nettle, Web, Dutiful and Elliania and of cource our hopeless romantic Ha. But damn I hate Starling she's the worst

spoiler warning for the trilogy I definitely agree Burrich is too weak in this trilogy but you should remember about his knee injuries which are like... pernament. It's also bit unfair to compare him to Chade who uses different herbs and literal drugs to give himself energy, and since this trilogy uses the Skill to some degree. About Burrich's death... Well someone important had to actually die, otherwise I feel like the Pale Woman wouldn't work as well as a villian as she does (ik she does some really bad things to Fool but he eventually lives, and yes ik she doesn't kill Burrich directly, but she def causes it). Also even though I hate Molly and don't want to admit this but, if Burrich hadn't died Fitz would have returned to his cabin and I feel like that would be a lack of development.

@@givex2120 ngl the Pale Woman is really despicable but she's also kinda a wet noodle in this trilogy. I don't like how she is just a pure evil villain. I mean it makes sense to some extent to not like having dragons around because there are definetly risks involved with that, especially with their attitude towards humans but she goes beyond that and really just wants to control or if that's not possible destroy which makes her shallow imo

@@aysseralwan yeah never said the Pale Woman was Hobb's best villian, far from it. Her motivations are very shallow but considering how miserable she is at the end (that's the point ik) it is still good to show she managed to do something bad to Fitz. Otherwise she would be even more of a wet noodle. Also sometimes pure evil characters are quite cool and are a great addition to the story. *Full series spoilers rn* *spoiler warning* *full rote spoilers!* We should also remember her upringing in Clerres. Since her vision of the world matched with Servant's she was given literally what she wanted and was told how important she was. While I do understand why the Sevants might have been against the dragons it's certainly important to remember about the shady stuff they did and how they were basically influencing everything and controling the world. It makes sense to me that Ilistore became an extreme version of the Servants.

bro i know u arent even going to read the comment but i need to say.... in the last bits of fool's fate we get this chapter where fitz sees the rooster crown and wears it while holding fool's dead body and after wearing the crown he hears different voices of people trapped in it ...... and one of those people say that they are the rainbow of history and all people are of different ages/time era and one voice look at fool and say he should have given his memory to the dragon and thus could have lived on even after his bodily death.... bro!!! is it not a cool and kinda sci fi concept when we have curently heard tht scientist of 21st century are trying to trap human minds into a database of some sort to .... kind of immortalize our brains even when our bodies die? i have just read tht chapter and i have goosebumps.... also the way fitz used skill to convince fool's dead body elements tto not return to earth but to realign themselves as fool was ... interesting. that was described as 'guiding of changes' by Hobb which again subtly,oh so subtly brings Fitz's role as the 'Changer'. fitz here changed the very principle of our being:death. a changer indeed. (ROTE have 3 recurring themes imo- first is human misery - second memory and third recurring turn or cycle of events) also the theme of memory and importance of memory is hardly discussed when i hear about ROTE but why does no one talk about it?! also the recurring events theme is brought subtly by Hobb so it kind of justifies why few people talk about it... anyway she brings her themes so subtly tht u cant even notice it unless u ponder on it. This woman is unbelievable! this is the first time im loving a female author's work this much.... its now my favourite series of all time and im still at the Fool's Fate.

The final trilogy goes even deeper. There are so many subtleties that this series brings, re-reads would be very beneficial and enjoyable. Hobb is my favorite, but there are plenty of amazing female authors out there.

The fool always had a flair for arts and crafts I think and the reason he has really picked up on carving is because of Farseer spoilers below: Because he has skill on his fingers he can do a Michaelangelo and feel the grain and life and history of the wood and it helps him carve and coax out the hidden shapes within to make his masterpieces. The sensitivity can be overbearing and why he usually wears a glove but he freely uses it for his carvings.

First. That’s an EXCELLENT question. But maybe as carnivorous animals - all animals accept the circle life. Just so hard to finish THE BEST TRILOGY (Tawny Man) and have to move on to what should be at least a great quad (I absolutely love Sintara and the Dragons!!) yet end up so annoyed. It’s not because it’s not about Fitz but because it’s just written so poorly comparatively. Word choice. Sentence structure. Grammar. Cadence. And RIDICULOUS REPETITIVELY EXPLAINING THE SAME STORYLINES. Ugh. Sorry. Just can’t hear about the “rules” for the born with too much of the Elderling touch. One. More. Time. O M G It has forced me to literally not care if the dragons just end up eating all the people. 😂 Could’ve. No - should’ve been better in too many of the most basic ways. It makes me think it was written first like a LOOOONG time ago. It’s too amateur for Hobb. Especially after just absolutely LOVING the brilliance of Tawny Man Tri. 😭😡😭😍

@@thefantasynuttwork I got my husband to read this series and now he’s about to start book 2 of the last trilogy and I’m on city of dragons. (School is hindering my life’s progress 🤣) and he is LOVING IT. I’m stuck between jealous and the 10 year old me still savoring my ice cream after my little brother gobbled up his and now is mad. 😂
