Doc Watson was an American guitarist, songwriter, and singer of bluegrass, folk, country, blues, and gospel music. Watson won seven Grammy awards as well as a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Watson's flatpicking skills and knowledge of traditional American music are highly regarded. Watson taught himself to play fiddle tunes on his Les Paul electric guitar. He later transferred the technique to acoustic guitar, and playing fiddle tunes became part of his signature sound.
Deacon Dan Crary helped re-establish flatpicked guitar as a prominent soloing bluegrass instrument. Crary is an innovator of the flatpicking style of guitar playing. He is also a Speech communications Professor at California State University, Fullerton. Crary categorizes himself as a "Solo flatpicker" and has recorded several projects that feature him along with guests, usually other innovators of the guitar in all styles.
Norman Blake is an American instrumentalist, vocalist, and songwriter. He is considered one of the leading figures in the bluegrass revival of the 1970s
Sam Bush is an American bluegrass mandolin player considered an originator of the Newgrass style.
Directed by Terry Allen Williams, Produced by Thomas Lofstrom
This series features progressive bluegrass and country music performed at the Telluride Festivals, and is available on DVD from

The three great flat pickers, and Sam. They set the standard for all of us who have come after them. I remember Doc and Norman and Dan first playing on stage together like this at Winfield, Kansas, on a cold Saturday night in late September, 1972. Great picking, and great memories.

+James523001  I was there too! 1975 Mark O'Connor won the National Flat Pick Championship. The legendary jam with Doc, Dan and Norman will haunt my memory till the day I die. I and others were literally stunned and walking around in a daze afterwards. Some of us huddled around little tape recorders listening to the jam. That is when the trend started of having the three jam on stage at Telluride and other festivals. A cover story in Pickin magazine about the jam. I don't believe they ever did match the magic that happened in Winfield that September though. I did see them in Telluride a few years later and as amazing as they were, it just wasn't the same. I have never heard of a good recording of the Winfield jam. Have you?

Sorry to delay this response. I caught it, and intended to respond, and then some things got in the way. I have a good copy of the jam from Saturday night, second generation off the sound board. They did Sally Gooden, Soldier's Joy, Black Mountain Rag, and Salt River/Bill Cheatham that night. It was cold as could be. I recall seeing Blake sitting around inside the barn playing with Sam and Curtis, Courtney, Tut, etc., before he went on that evening. Tut was there, and I believe he and Randy and Gruhn had a booth there.I also have a copy of Doc's set with Merle from that night. Very special time. Yep, O'Connor won second flatpicking in 1974 behind Rick George, then first n 1975, then walked off stage when he made an error during his round in 1976 , and didn't final at all. In 1977, he won first place. I recall that very well because I was one of the five finalists. I'd only been picking for about six years, and I'd never played in that competition or any national competition before that. Although I didn't hit the top three spot that year, I was plenty happy to be in the finals in such good company.

It almost seems as if someone intentionally muted Dan’s microphone. Those three guitar pickers could complement each other if the equipment worked as intended. Not to take away from anyone, it’s not a competition but Dan brings some of Doc, Norman, and himself. If you never heard him, do so and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Otherwise, an excellent look into the past.
