"Real speed." "Real G forces." "Really amazing!"
These are the assertions of those who made the blockbuster 'Top Gun: Maverick,' and those who have seen it, and they're right. On this episode, second-generation aerial coordinator Mr. Kevin LaRosa, with credits on movies such as 'Iron Man' and 'The Avengers,' joins us to discuss the real flying and real challenges of filming Top Gun: Maverick, including the self-imposed requirements to make the film as authentic as possible.
Listener questions addressed on this episode include why F/A-18 Super Hornets are sometimes seen selecting afterburner on the catapult stroke instead of before the shot, and whether aircraft tailhooks can be raised once lowered.
Episode artwork by Janek Krause / announcements by Clint Bell. 'Top Gun' anthem covered by Jaime Lopez.

My husband is retired Navy of 16 years, he loved the movie!! He was so impressed with the effort made to make everything be as authentic as possible, he was both the “white shirt” and the “green shirt” on deck, I love seeing his face shine as he watches those moments, he rarely talks about his time in the Navy, but movies like this bring that out in him, as his wife I love those moments, so a HUGE thank you!! Top Gun Maverick killed it!!

learning about the professionalism and effort put into this movie is just soo fascinating. whether it's the actors preparation or the navy's involvement or the amount of blood, sweat, and tears poured into such a passion project as a sequel to Top Gun, a movie that could have easily been tarnished by how most recent movie sequel traps fall into (Matrix cough cough), i just love hearing more and more and ahhh i can't wait to see all the behind the scenes. Loving this Podcast

Excellent podcast, Jello. I'm a former Army Apache crew chief (and fixed wing private pilot) and I'd LOVE to see the Apache get some real love on the big screen. Let's be honest...Firebirds was a joke 🤣 but I believe there is some cinematic gold there waiting for a top notch production crew to do the Apache some justice! I have plenty of stories to tell regarding OIF missions relating to the fight in Iraq. Keep doing what you're doing, there is a massive community of aviation geeks who appreciate it!

Loved listening to this episode. Just emailed you asking if you would ever consider doing an episode of Air Force Col. John Boyd. As one of the original and legendary instructors at the Air Force Fighter Weapons School in the 1950s, and considered the father of the F-15, F-16 (and by extension the F-18), and played a supporting role with Pierre Sprey in the design of the A-10, it seems like he deserves an episode or two. After all, he did write the Aerial Attack Study, which became the original fighter tactics manual. Keep up the amazing work! :)

I saw top gun Maverick last weekend it didn't disappoint, the aerial scenes were just outstanding but the Hornet is just not a Tomcat sorry Jell-o 😉. But it didn't blow me away like the original did, the original movie really gave the general public an inside view of naval aviation in a way it's never been featured before. Since that time there's been many films documentaries made about naval aviation including the one that you started in Jell-o on PBS. The first 10 minutes of Top Gun was just jaw dropping then add the music to go with it and it's one of those unforgettable sequences ever filmed. Tony Scott was a genius his cinnamonography was beyond amazing. I was glad to see the homage paid in Top Gun Maverick movie of the opening scene along with the music and the carrier ops they are still extremely entertaining and live up to the fact that a carrier deck is one of the most dangerous workplaces anywhere. Great podcast Jell-o thanks again for bringing unbelievably informative and entertaining guests on board to discuss naval aviation.

Jello, i always understood that the legacy hornets plugged in burner on the cat bc the AFCS had a tendency to let the jet settle a little at the end of the stroke. The C had a 50kt excess limit per the bulletins so was never really an issue. Seems I remember it was frowned upon for rhinos to light the AB below combat shot weights as the end speed could result in excess over limits. Similar to RATS and traps.

Turns out it wasn't, but had Ferg backing him up. I'm hoping to see much more of the behind the scenes stuff, especially when the movie is released on video. Thank you Vincent for the great interview! Kevin mentions at 33:10, that the massive control surfaces of F/A-18 create vapour. Technically speaking, vapour is already in the air, and what we see is condensation of it in the areas of low pressure. Is there another, more precise term that aviators use for those things?
@FighterPilotPodcast
@FighterPilotPodcast 2 жыл бұрын
You are technically correct.
@gregory.chalenko

@@FighterPilotPodcast but is vapour still most commonly used term? Sorry for my nitpicking, just really want to figure this out for myself. It seems to me that "contrails" is used specifically for clouds generated by engines. Wingtip vortices may have condensation within their cores as well, which is often mentioned. But I'm not sure I've come across anyone naming those clouds over the surface of the wing at high AoA, or vortices that happen not at wingtips, but rather at the edges of ailerons or flaps...

I have a few questions concerning this movie: * Wouldn't a mission as dangerous as this be strictly volunteers only? Where beyond the risk of dying when shot down, if taken prisoner torture and execution are highly likely? *Would Maverick as a former test pilot be allowed to take part, as when shot down he would likely be tortured for information and might give up some of that to the enemy. *When Maverick was made team leader he has apparently told his girlfriend that he is going to go on a mission with a high death risk. Is a pilot allowed to disclose that much to third parties? That woman might have been recruited as a spy by some foreign nation and report this to her contacts. *Regarding the exercise, apparently every test run comes with the riks of bending the air frame of the plane. Could they even do live test runs of this maneuver? I mean, one ruined plane per test run is a bit expensive.... Wouldn't they send the pilots to NASA to test their g-force tolerance in that spinny machine they use to train astronauts? *About the excuse why they don't use the more capable F35. Couldn't the Pentagon have intervened and prevented it, because of the low general survivability of the whole thing, rather wanting to sacrifice several of the older planes (and their pilots), rather than the more valuable F-35. *During the mission, shouldn't reconnessance have had knowledge about which of the enemy 5th generation planes are currently in the air so there are no surprises? Or are they that stealthy? Was a great, hugely entertaining movie. Thanks a lot for clarifying these points!

For all the talk about waiting 30+ years for a story worth telling, it is actually the story that really lets Top Gun Maverick down. The story I thought was actually worse than the first movie. Characters too, I think are worse in the new film than the old. Even Maverick doesn't seem like Maverick anymore. But well done to Kevin LaRosa on the camera work.

I cannot understand how you/we ended up with some of the very not so good things in the movie that there are. Even the trailer, for me is so far from real... I rewatched Iro Eagle and thought... yeah, typical hollywood overdo, no background to characters, only action and cgi, top gun 2 is a modern iron eagle. In other words a very expensive missed opurtunity.
