Top Gun was never about the story line it was about getting lost in the flying footage. I was on active duty when the first one hit the big screen in '86 and the whole squadron went to see it together. So imagine 40 "real" fighter jocks laughing and critiquing everything on the screen after leaving a "choir practice" at the O'club. We loved the cinematography combined with the tunes. Can't wait for the new version to get lost in the fiction and flying scenes for a couple of hours.

I think the arguments around this (and other) films fall into two categories: 1) those who don't seem to understand movies are make-believe. These are the people that insist the actors were flying the planes and doing all their own stunts, etc. There are just some people that will never grasp that movies are not the same as documentaries (and nowadays, even documentaries may not be as real as you think) 2) the uber-critical subject-matter experts. This is NOT directed at Mover. He shares the nit-pick stuff just for education and entertainment value. He still understands that movies have to be entertaining. That's why you get a scene where pilots jump in a plane and are firing off the cat or rocketing down the runway, because taking time in a movie to show a walkaround and checklists just isn't entertaining. But some people insist if it's not 100% dead-on, then it's just wrong or trash. Sometimes realism is sacrificed for the sake of entertainment. That's why you see a movie-cop rack the slide before going into a shoot-out. It's why people rarely say good-bye in a movie phone call. And it's why you can see a fighter jet rocket vertically between two others with inches to spare. This is what people are talking about with "suspension of disbelief." Yes, it's fake. Yes, we know it's fake. And yes, we ignore that knowledge to be entertained. If you can't do that, then you're going to hate everything and be a miserable person.

realism is what makes a movie good. If you think showing a cop racking his gun before getting into a shoot out is good you don't know what makes a good movie. It shows the film maker does not understand their subject matter. Not going to make excuses for bad writing. As for "shut your brain off" i don't shut my brain off- your brain does not shut off, its capable of processing Vast amounts of information

I appreciated your interpretation of the “Start 2” scene and the riser harness strap “controversy”. I had some thoughts about the actors walking on the ramp with t-shirts under their flight gear and thought they were probably in early training at the light prop plane stage. Gotta work up to full nomex in that heat, or you’ll have a bunch of unconscious talent. It also turns out that the “push-ups on the ramp” scene is because those 3 aircrew lost a bet. So all you “I never did one push-up on the ramp” folks, just go to the movie. Enjoy.

I don’t know why anyone would expect Tom or other actors on the pilot seat and expect 100% realism, lol. This is a MOVIE. At the same time it’s bad ass that Tom actually put himself and the other actors in the fighter jet for hopefully better scenes with all the camera work they did, instead of doing it all with green screens. You just don’t get this kind of content on movies nowadays.

As someone who has worked in motion picture visual effects, almost no frame of this movie will be untouched by VFX artists. But, that doesn't mean that they can't go to great lengths to put actors in realistic environments wherever possible. Just does so much to make the performances better, where it's possible. (Also, this movie's certain to have a heavy dose of digital face replacement, so don't trust anything you see on screen!)
@roshieifra
@roshieifra Жыл бұрын
From what I've heard, the actors were in the backseat during the flight scenes. I'm not saying maybe there wasn't some face replacement, but I think a lot of the footage was them actually in the jets. I think one of Cruise's motivations to do this film was to get into these jets, lol. So I believe a lot of the footage is real. I mean, obviously no explosives were used, and jets weren't flying as close to each other as some of the scenes portrayed, but they did perform the maneuvers as if they were that close, and then editing and vfx would fill in the gaps. At least that's what I've gathered from all the interviews of the cast & crew, especially the navy flight coordinator (that's not his official job title on the film I don't think, but something like that). Anyway, just my thoughts on an old comment/reaction video. 🤷‍♀️
@azotic1
@azotic1 Жыл бұрын
@@roshieifra Oh yeah, based on what they’ve said I’m sure that was the case!! They just didn’t cut that footage straight into the movie. It all would have gone through a VFX process to add or change what was out the window and sweeten the whole thing up visually. Also, it would be typical to add shots after principal photography in response to test audiences or creative needs that come out in editing, and those shots would possibly use face replacement or even a full CG pilot. As a rule, on a movie like this, no shot would be untouched.

Love the breakdown Mover. One point - you said that the mountain background wasn't real, which I believe is incorrect as, per the documents released by the gov't the film crew filmed flight sequences out of NAS Whidbey Island, in addition to MCAS Miramar and NAS Fallon; NAS Whidbey aviators fly through a MOA that goes through the Cascades, including North Cascades National Park. VR 1355, aka the "million dollar route" goes through terrain similar to the scene you mention, so they may have filmed those scenes while flying out of NAS Whidbey. Lots of videos of Growler pilots doing low levels on that route; in the winter, it looks pretty similar to the scene.

I have to say I could tell many many times in the movie they were sitting in the back seat....and not once did it ever spoil a single one of those shots for me. I will take real actors sitting in the backseat of a real jet over CGI/Blue Screen/Volume any day. That shot of Tom Cruise taking off from the carrier....who cares it is the backseat, that is one of the most amazing shots of an actor in a jet in a movie, ever. And I'm really glad that pilots like you can really respect it too. Despite some of the obvious flaws of the movie that you and Gronky pointed out (and were 100% right on) I think we can all agree that like the first Top Gun, when it comes down to the cinematography this just set a bar way way high.

In some videos behind the scenes of the movie "Rush (2013)," it was revealed that the actors *did not actually drive Formula 1 cars.* They drove replicas that looked like the real thing but only drove at a snail's pace. Professional F-1 'precision drivers' re-enacted the historical and actual racing scenes. This knowledge destroyed the entire movie for me. At least we know that Mark Hamill actually flew an X-Wing in the Death Star's trench run.

Look for an EPIC Top Gun Maverick Sneak Peak clip that is 4 minutes long. It is much longer than the same clip shown at the Top Gun Maverick Red Carpet Premier in San Diego. The Who's classic Won't Get Fooled Again (8 min. song) plays in the background. 200 push ups...for the loser of the engagement. The Sneak Peak is shown in theaters, due the screenings for Dr. Strange Multiverse of Madness. The only weird thing is the cockpit displays look very old (1970s-80s) with green symbology. No F/A-18E/F Block II and Block III color displays or helmet-mounted cuing system. BONUS: Also look for a trailer for Avatar 2, due for release XMAS 2022. The plot is that the entire film takes place underwater.

@@13christbane the first one wasn't complex, but it was still good. There were characters we loved with arcs that led to personal growth and a clear objective that we wanted to root for. Today's Hollywood doesn't seem to know how to do any of those things.

Thanks for the technical review, I alway appreciate your perspective because you have flown fighter jets, been there done it. If people can't appreciate that it's still hollywood and entertainment they should not go see movies. I have a top gun party booked at the local Cineplex VIP for May 28th. - group of us meeting before the movie and wearing clothing related to the movie should be great!

Going through the Helo Dunker, with a bunch of Marine E-1 non-swimmers was one of the most terrifying experiences one can have. When the instructor said, "don't kick your feet", every one of these guys heard, "kick your feet as hard and as fast as you can". It was best just to cover your head with your arms until they were gone, and then escape!

It will be a lot to live up to the Original TOPGUN.....What the trailers don't show is the soundtrack 🤔.....the First TOPGUN had multiple top 10 hits 😲.....and all are still good today...(Take my breath away : Danger Zone : Take me out on your wings )....just to name a few....- So I hope the soundtrack is up to the job😎👍.

part of me wonders if Tom Cruise was just kinda showing off but as a seasoned actor AND a pilot, he's got the insight needed to bridge the gap. I think "most intense" is a bit of a stretch but it's very likely the MOST support the DoD has given to a movie. hell Top Gun is probably what got most of the current top brass.

Great video, Mover! Thanks a lot. Question: would you do a Mover Ruins Movies review of the flight scene in The Rock? It's Hornets doing air to ground. Brief, but a cool scene nonetheless. And I'm sure there'd be a lot to talk about--for example, the Hornets have "US Air Force" printed on the side. ;-)

It was reported that they had 800 hours of footage. Some people think this wasteful or unrealistic. I don't think either. With 6 IMAX cameras in each jet, and let's say 5 jets were used...that is a little under 27 hours footage (which obviously the whole movie isn't flying...though we hope for the most). I think this sound fairly accurate. Your thoughts on this?

I'm a San Diego girl -- where the sexiest thing a man can wear is a Jet! -- I also went on to work in television as a writer. I handled even Military Question someone handed me, and LOVE an excuse to call Media Relations. (I really gave it to a guy named Custer once, he was finally laughing so hard he asked me to call back.) Anyway, the point being, I have met Cruise a few times and feel how you will, he is a dedicated military backer and an excellent pilot -- his P-51 was used in a music video for "Maverick". And yes, "Small Frame" is polite. At 5'9" I am taller than he is, and he does have a small frame and narrow shoulders, his riser will absolutely slip. But he is incredibly polite, helpful, and genuinely glad to meet you. He gave me the family pronunciation of their last name (which he does not use on screen) and was so happy to know he was a quiz show question. Believe me, when you tell the bosses. "Because Tom Cruise is out in the hallway, so I asked him. Then we talked about San Diego and jets." You are Teacher's Pet that day. I think about 9 of us saw them shoot the entire first film. Friend of Friend, got to fly as one of the Russian Pilots. They loved it. I love your channel.(and "Post" is when you add the CG. "Fix it in Post" is our favorite joke.)
