Just finished binge watching the show and was struck by a few things 1) Emily is Queen of dressing inappropriately in the workplace 2) EVERY man is seemingly hitting on her 3) other than posting on her blog she doesn't really seem to do any real marketing related tasks for her job 4) Kate Walsh doesn't get nearly enough screen time

Emily spends *$310,703.25* just in season 1... while a digital strategist nets an average *$77,647* per year... so she just spent her FOUR year salary in a couple of weeks. 🤯😳

I would have loved to follow the woman who was originally suppose to go to Paris and watch how she balances work and family and relationships.

Emily in Paris reminds me of every time Rachel from Friends stumbled upon huge career opportunities despite being completely unqualified for them, including a job offer in Paris towards the end.

I'm a parisian in my 30's and I watched the show for what it is. For me, it is the same level of unrealistic as Sex & the city. The most offensive episode was the one in wich the client offer Emily underwear. It is sexual harassment in France too !

The size thing has always bothered me--so many people are praised for being fashionable when they're not actually doing anything interesting or creative, they're just thin. Although Lily Collins has a well documented eating disorder so I don't think she should be shaded for being thin, but the continued celebration of it has to be a contributing factor. I don't know if anyone else saw the show "Katy Keene" on the CW (I was forced for work reasons) but it had a lot of the same problems; the character kept finding loopholes and exceptions that applied only to her and she was just supposed to be so naturally outstanding that she didn't need to actually earn things or work her way up in the industry, but also had a rich friend to prop her up.

I was also pissed that they hired an Asian actress who could not speak Chinese and made her memorize and then butcher all these lines. Why not just write her as a Korean singer or hire a Chinese speaking actress?

Was fluent in French and my host family in France didn’t pay me for two months and often left me alone with the children for days on end with no money or food. I had to leave in the night too.

Number 4 got me good. That happened to me: except I moved to US for a while! That's the temptation. When we dream about another country we can basically forget car insurance, dentist appointment, and other boring costly stuff for a while. Nobody sees themself moving to Paris to buy toilet paper.

I kind of liked the show, but to be honest, I felt it a little outdated, like something made in the 2000´s. It was stupid fun.

I lived in a chambre de bonne (dutch version) and my experience is exactly like yours, except I had a nice window. I always find fascinating the appartments in movies/tv shows and how unrealistic they are

I love how much more casual and real Chelsea has been in these episodes. Unapologetic and just honest, kinda goofy and just sharing her real opinions. Feels a lot more like a conversation, really nice :)

When I was 26, I packed up without pretty much any preparation, and moved to London (from Hungary in Eastern Europe). The only reason I didn't end up homeless was because a friend of a friend had a spare room to let. Said room was literally just a walk-in closet that had been stripped of the shelves and had a bed inserted, and a shoebox-sized window that was directly over the back window of a fish&chips shop. I paid £100 a week for the privilege of living there (this was 2011), and that was supposed to be a steal because, again, friend of a friend. So, I can definitely relate to your feelings about the chambres de bonne :)

I haven't watched the show yet but when you said she moves to a country where she doesn't speak the language, I was right away reminded of all the Americans I have met here in Europe who live in a non-English speaking country but don't even bother to learn the language because "what's the use for me?" (quote). To us Europeans it's super arrogant when you come to live in a foreign country and expect everyone to speak English. My workmate in Rome was an American who regularly snapped at waiters for not speaking English. Please never be that type of person, guys!

Those weird apartment roofs are called 'Mansard Roofs' ! They were popularized in Paris by the architect Louis Mansard - thus their name. Zoning restrictions in Paris at the time (early 1600s I think?) prohibited a building taller than 20m, but the height was measured to the cornice, so the Chambre de Bonne could be wedged into the roof to save on space. Source: I'm an architect, I love little stories like this about how our built environment evolved!

Might I suggest The Queens Gambit? It faces addiction and self destruction pretty head on and shows that romance doesn't have to be a main force for a female lead, her will and support from other, less perfect but still strong woman can both help or sabotage her. She still spends money on nice outfits and splurges for herself, but learns where she needs to focus and shows a lot more humanity in that way. It's a fantastic show

I haven't watched Emily in Paris (not my bag, personally) but as someone who wears and loves bold, borderline tacky clothes, Emily's wardrobe is something I would not only wear, but CHERISH. Please Note: I do NOT work in Fashion. 😆

My experience of watching Emily in Paris ended within seconds of hearing Lily Collins' first line. I was so annoyed that I turned the show off and never looked back. This was exactly the video I needed to affirm my reaction and satisfy any lingering curiosity. Can we please mention the stereotype of men in this show? All of them are tall, but not huge, trained but wether skinny nor muscled. Not smaller or fat. Every single one of them got great looking hair, perfekt manicured hands etc... Then all the guys are having affairs, but none of the women? No woman cheating? Please... And they are all dressed as if they could visit a wedding right now!

Even as a guy "everything is fashion when you're a size 00" hit to close to home for me.

Honestly I binged it without thinking much about that and it was an enjoyable experience. As long as you don’t try to think any deeper than surface level it can be fun, but all the points you made are totally correct and make the show very ridiculous looking back lol

UGH Emily and her work. I nearly collapsed dead when she instragramed about a lipgloss that is smudgeproof even when you are (as she eats as strawberry) "Berry hungry" the owner of the company sees it and says "She's very clever!" NO SHE'S NOT.

I see the title thinking: "What? There is actually something good to learn about Emily in Paris?" And then I see the video and realize this is basically a Don't-Do-This tutorial. Good. The hell hasn't frozen over yet.

Can we talk how Emily is supposed to be social media specialist and puts spaces in her hashtags? As someone who works in social media (for the French company, funny enough) I had a feeling similar to what doctors must experience watching medical dramas, laughing at complexly phrased bs character was saying. Also no, that kind of job definitely does not get you Chanel bags - you'll need backpack anyway ;)

The au pair story hit me hard because that happened to me in London (not exactly but yet the same with abuse and emotional torment). I had to escape to my friend who in the end helped me get back home to SA. It was the most life-changing but cold time of my life within and out. I learnt a lot about myself in that time and finally learnt how to put myself first.

The “Emily” character type totally was the lower socialite class of Manhattan and the “American girl” dream of the early 2000’s... totally outdated for sure... even SATC was so unreal. I studied abroad and every other non New Yorker American would reference SATC and hip hop to me 😂 like ok, TV cultural appreciation/appropriation pre Instagram was hilarious... I’m a native New Yorker, all the other students were from other states and towns with money 🙄😂 and that was how they fashioned their young identities 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Thank you for making this. The show was basically “this is how far you can get if you’re skinny and pretty.” And it’s depressing because it is partially true. That skinny, pretty women can get really far in life and have wild, romantic adventures and everything falls in their lap and hahahaha. That’s what this show is, in a nutshell.

Chelsea: you are a smart woman with substance. Of course this superficial show shocks you. Thank you for being critical and helping young women be more discerning.

If I want "escapism" I watch science fiction. Baby Yoda beats Emily in Paris every single time. Shows like Emily in Paris annoy me greatly, since in the real world, Emily would be heavily in debt, and she would have been sent back to Chicago immediately, and the agency in Paris would likely question why would the agency in the US send someone so obviously unqualified.

This show came out the week I moved to Germany to start my master's degree and it was everything I needed in my soft emotional state.

Her bizarre outfits made me weirdly nostalgic for Disney channel like the Lizzie McGuire movie

If you have daughters or know of young girls, seriously, tune them into this channel. Growing up, I was heavily influenced by pop culture. Dreamed of going away to my out of state dream school and thinking everything will just fall into place. Well, it would if you're rich. But I paid for everything on my own. I was in a constant state of burn out. Going to school and working full-time, but I stuck with it because this was my "dream". I could have stayed in state and gone to a state school. 1 year of living the "dream" could have paid for at least 4 years of being grounded in reality.

When comparing the first to the last episode, I definitely see a difference in Lily Collins weight. She's been very vocal about having eating disorders, and I feel like being on this show made her relapse, because she just gets thinner every episode but they're trying to hide it by layering more ridiculous clothes on her.

I never had high expactations for that show, but I really enjoy it after a long day of work before bed, cause it calmes my mind down with a carefree sweet buttercup like world. I like it.

When I was in Paris I stayed at a hostel. The only thing I have to say in this forum is...Paris is beautiful at night and to make sure to book and do everything in advance because that place is crazy expensive.

I enjoyed a lot this series, it was what I call "popcornish", you eat a tub of popcorn while watching it and get nothing from it but pretty scenarios and soap operas plotlines (hence the Gabriel and Camille situation) with very poor writing and not even an inch of reality. I know that you speak from the financial point of view, but as a designer that knows how hard is to do marketing and to grow on social media, it's absurd to think about the way that Emily gets to be an "influencer" for cheesy pictures and not at all thought out hashtag strategy. Besides, she's supposed to work on marketing, let's face it: someone who works on marketing that has that sense of style and is, honestly, that pretty, does not have 200 followers on social media as stated at the beginning of the show, they make it look like everything that happens to her is out of pure luck. And let's not mention the posts that she makes without any planning or showing to the client before posting it. Also, the way that the relationships evolve in the series is insane: suddenly everyone that she meets becomes her best friend or lover. I'm sure the au pair girl and Camille had a life and better friends before her. It's not realistic in any way. It's basically portrayed in a parallel universe, that's my idea for it.

That show made me cringe, Especially if you realize that Emily is supposed to be in her 30s or is 30. 😬😬😬

I think what bothered me most about the show besides the flagrant wealth that was supposed to just be normal, was that she really acted offended that people treated her badly for not knowing french. As to the Chambre du Bonne, I think movie “Ratatouille”portrays it very well, although with some alterations...The tiny space where Linguini lives has a toilet.

I wachted the show too and was mad about it because I am from Germany an my family lives in France an d I now for sure that this lifestyle in the show has nothing to do with the real life in Europe. The rent is astronomical in big cites like Paris or Berlin and without the language in the country you cannot get a job in such a large city. It makes me angry that American shows make Europe seem as a magical place, where love and opportunities are every where. It is not like that at all. It is very hard and without the language- no chance. I hope some young Americans see your video and learn that Europe is a beautiful place to live, but you have to work your ass of to be here. But I guess Emily also represented a generation of women that dress, act, spend and live way beyond their means and status. Frankly, I viewed her as one of those women that is all about the "social media status". Like when she posts different variation of what was actually happening to her. it's proof that social media does not and never will show the entire truth.

Agree on all of these points. I found myself asking over and over, "Emily, what IS your role in this company?" I THINK she was supposed to be like second in charge to her boss who we know was the head of marketing at the parent company (and for some reason just decides not to pursue her dream of moving to Paris when she gets pregnant as a single woman), but they write her interactions as somewhere between a mid-upper tier employee (she was promised a senior position after she comes back) and a very entitled intern. I think they caught on to some of this halfway through because we get two sudden mentions that she has a masters degree in communications implying she's very qualified. BUT if she was mid-upper tiered and second to the head of marketing at a huge PR firm, shouldn't she be on more equal standing in her new office? Sure she's a terrible employee and everyone else is made to seem awful, but why does she then act like she's an intern in terms of office seniority? Surely she'd at least out rank Luc. Another thing that bugs me is how she and her initial boyfriend's relationship is depicted. It was clear it wouldn't last, and that he was just an obstacle for the hot Parisian men, but if you've been dating someone for two years, I would think you'd at least talk to them more privately about taking a job in Paris rather than just announcing it in a sports bar and expecting them to be down for long distance.

in the case of carrie, it was at least part of her character. she was obsessed with fashion, and she was characterized in a way that it somewhat made sense that she dresses this extravagant way emily is decidedly not a fashion person, it’s a plotpoint for like a hot minute that she has no experience in these luxury brands, and it was never a part of her character that she was even interested in clothing. and she not only wears stuff that’s super out there, she has guccis and chanelsand loubutins

You’re so right about Emily in Paris, you do kind of have to watch it under the assumption that it is just a fantasy, and then it’s quite enjoyable! I did like that she would turn a dire situation around!

I loved the fact that this was not a show done in the States, pretending to be in France, but filmed in Paris; the scenes of Paris are gorgeous. This is just another piece of fluff TV, and I was happy to take a break from the reality of poverty , CoVId, the revolting political, race, and health issues of the US. And when I don't like something I turn it off. I find it interesting to see how much disgust has been triggered by this show. As a professional female musician of 50 years in Canada and the US, virtually every film or TV show about musicians is full of mistakes, and unrealistic scenarios. So I assume that is the same for every profession in such a show. If I want reality I watch documentaries. But this dissection of the show was also entertaining to watch . Excellent analysis as usual. The "chambre de bonne" that Chelsea describes is exactly the same as the one I lived in while in Paris. I was born and raised in France so no difference for the locals if you have no money.

I read an article on Snapchat in Cosmo (of all places) where a journalist reached out to Parisian Instagram influencers to ask what they thought of the show and Emily's character's posts. It was entertaining and highlighted some of the same ridiculousness of the show that you discussed.

I too lived in a chambre de bonne and I thought 150 sq. feet was small...WoW 90!! I had no kitchen (mirco+fridge), but was thankful to have a shower, tub and bathroom and my sloping Velux window....I made it through half of the first episode. I'll try re-watching it with some liquid motivation!!

Growing up I never had any desire to watch Sex in the City for all of the reasons you listed. What pleasure is there in watching shallow people throwing money around like that? I lived abroad last year and learnt the language when I got there and it was hard! Hard and at times broke and full of wonderful people. Would love to see more shows like that, where the locals are the best bit of going abroad (without it becoming "white person is so special we worship them" and more like "we want you to do your best and will encourage you!")

The biggest difference between Emily and Carrie is, the creators of the show smh were aware that Carrie is supposed to be highly flawed and unlikeable at times and to combat that we see the entire story from her perspective whereas Emily seems like the rom-com cliche she is supposed to be the likable young hard-working beautiful girl and it just doesn't come across like that. Like the entire show repeatedly talked about how the French cheat and Emily as an American doesn't believe in it meanwhile she was kissing her best friend's boyfriend the entire time.
