Join us as we file and fly IFR from San Carlos to Livermore California. Austin has recently completed his private pilot check ride and is now moving on to his instrument rating. Early on in that process, we fly a complete flight from start to finish to see how the process works and what it will be like when he gets his rating. We use the autopilot. We take the vectors. I handle things that are beyond his current abilities and explain how to process an IFR flight. This is a (pretty much) unedited look at a real IFR flight lesson and is an example of the kind of bonus content that Patrons get as a part of supporting The Finer Points channels. Please enjoy!

Really cool to watch saturation point happen. Reminds me of when you explained ifr to chops as a gym workout and getting to that point where you cant lift any more weight. Great vid, as usual. Thanks

Pass on to Austin that there is a stereo/mono DIP switch inside the headset control box, that he needs to switch. Apparently your plane (at least the one you were flying that day) has a stereo output and Lightspeed default is set to mono.

@@TheFinerPoints Yea my wife would film my lessons PPL & IFR with an iPhone from the back seat (no audio), I was amazed as well how task saturated I got during training!. We have since "graduated" to 2 GoPros, audio and a KZfaq Channel; "Parr 4 the Course" (pun intended), and in two weeks flying from Wichita Kansas to the Bahamas, our longest flight to-date. a little daunting but we'll manage. Got my PPL @ 60 and IFR @ 61, and LOVING it!

There are a lot of these types of relatively "real time" videos. Some IFR, some VFR. There will be a lot more IFR ones coming because Austin is just getting started in instrument training. (It kind of depends on what kind of students I have at the time ... it's a window into my life)

I've been having the same volume balancing issue you guys were describing. My brother had on the lightspeed and I had on the bose. I notice you guys have the same lightspeed/bose pairing. I wonder if its something to do with those two brands mixing. . . I turned everyknob on the panel and the headsets and couldn't get a good ATC/intercom balance.

Review the comments above somebody had the solution - "Pass on to Austin that there is a stereo/mono DIP switch inside the headset control box, that he needs to switch. Apparently your plane (at least the one you were flying that day) has a stereo output and Lightspeed default is set to mono."
@jameshuggins7320

There seem to be many factors leading to the student being saturated. He’s obviously distracted by the volume differential between instructor and controllers. Also, the cockpit is unnecessarily frantic.

Do things change substantially in IFR training? I'm VFR with 60ish hours and the radios were understandable until the end... so much info at once!
@flynjay1

It is a pretty drastic difference in mental focus compared to VFR. You don't realize how much you rely on the outside world until it goes away. He also had it pretty easy since he is flying with a great autopilot.

As an instructor you had a lot of information to give; but you overloaded him way too much. If I was trying to fly; I would have told you talk about half that amount. You can't teach everything in one flight.
@davidfern6833

I'm not sure of the intelligence of teaching IFR flying this way ----- using an autopilot as the primary means of aircraft control is asking for trouble. This kind of lesson would be much better spent using a procedural trainer on the ground.
@TheFinerPoints
@TheFinerPoints 3 жыл бұрын
I don't entirely agree. I totally agree that as time goes on we need to make sure that he can do this all by hand (and with failed equipment). I believe it's important to be able to think through the flying before having to do that and this lesson is fairly early in his training. Single pilot flying in the clouds is hard and somewhat "nerve wracking" for students (and sometimes experienced pilots) I want him to practice this under that pressure and get this real world experience. I will use the simulator for more extreme scenarios and other skill building drills.
