I've lost a few torches in my fluval as well. I monitor the magnesium & alkalinity religiously now. Monitor those levels along with your weekly water changes & see if that helps over the next few months. Pay attention to your temp. as well. (I believe high nitrates also harm torches over the long term.) Consistency is king.

From running a simillar setup i had some good results in adding a nano tunze skimmer, lights were brighter with the fluval marine 3, and it still felt only enough par for lps. I believe your low on par so i would move the torches a bit higher and goto 30÷ water changes once every two weeks or 20÷ every week or so. And empty the tank once a year for a good sandbed clean. Stuff builds up fast and thats where it spirals out of control from doing okisch to real bad in only a few weeks.

You are right...my tank did really well for a long time, however, as a result, I started to get lazy with my water changes. Although I would still do them, the time between kept getting longer and longer...eventually it caught up with me.

I would check the calcium level, and track that, which directly affects your alkanaity. with torches once they shrink its very hard to save them - literally. did you increase your light Par suddenyl as well ?

True. Higher Magnesium levels will help buffer your alkalinity and calcium swings, as those two will "fight" with each other if your Mg. is too low. Just don't go crazy adding too much. Magnesium levels over 2000 ppm can kill off your fish. But that's a crazy high amount. Be sure to test levels if you add a Mag. supplement.

I own torch corals. They are one of the more delicate SPS corals out there, even more than Frog Spawn or even Hammer Corals. I think you answered your own question. Alkalinity shifts (or any drastic spike in water parameters) will kill off heads, if not the entire coral in itself. You mentioned you don't test Alkalinity, and you really should. Here's why: Reef Crystals ( I use them myself) have a really high alkalinity of 12.5 dKh. So the problem with that, is that if your tank is running a low dKh, say 7.0 and you do even a moderate water change of 35%, you are shooting your dKh from 7.0 to 9.0 or more and that can stress your corals out to the point of losing more sensitive species. That is the big downside of Reef Crystals. If you are going to use it, be sure your parameters are close if you plan to do a decent size water change. Unfortunately, in a small tank like the Evo you own, they are much more difficult to keep corals in vs. a large tank. You probably have less than 10 gallons of actual water in the tank, so even taking out 3 gallons, can be a big swing in water parameters to your corals. I have more respect to someone that can keep a coral tank thriving in a tank that size, vs. a large one, you have to be more skilled at what you are doing, esp. if you are keeping LPS and SPS corals in it. Always think of corals like old people (like myself), they don't like change! lol. Sorry to babble on so long. Good luck!

Is the tank better then the Biocube?
@TheFishTankGuy
@TheFishTankGuy Жыл бұрын
That's a great question. I think that in terms of build quality and functionality, this tank and the Biocube are pretty similar. However, I will say that I like the stock light in the Fluval EVO MUCH more than the stock LED light in the Biocube. They both get the job done, but I enjoy the look of the EVO more. It's tougher to maintain with the smaller volume though.

alkalinity is the most important parametrer by far for hard corals. theres really no need to test for anything else. just do a water change if things look unhappy. thats all you can do about high nutrients, so why even test?

How does All For Reef work? I'm sure I could look it up, but wondering how you use it? I want to avoid parameter chasing...
@swordsman111982
@swordsman111982 Жыл бұрын
@@TheFishTankGuy All For Reef is balanced for Alk, Calc, Mag, and Trace Elements. So you just dose it based on just the AlK needs and it covers all the rest based off that balance. I use it in my Fluval Evo and Waterbox 50.3. All you need is a single doser ( Bluetooth Kamoer is the best I have found for it ). My corals gave incredible growth and color. It has been a game changer. Also has the effect of greatly reducing need for water changes if you Nitrates and Phosphates don’t get too high.
@TheFishTankGuy
@TheFishTankGuy Жыл бұрын
@@swordsman111982 I'm intrigued. A few more questions for you... So do you only test for alk? Either way, what test do you use for alk testing? Once you test, how often do you dose? Do you manually test for alk before dosing or do you get to a point where that thing will auto dose once a week etc?
@swordsman111982
@swordsman111982 Жыл бұрын
@@TheFishTankGuy I test Alk, Nitrate, and Phosphate. Average about every 2 weeks. My tanks have both been up for over a year and are pretty well established. I use the Hanna Checkers for testing, 1000 times easier to use and better than guessing color changes. To start dosing, I tested on Monday my Alk, the on Friday at the exact same time. I took the difference and divided it by 5. Figured that was my average element consumption for the tank. I then started to dose with All For Reef using the auto doser, dosing twice a day. I chose twice a day cause how small the amount is being dosed into the tank pushes the accuracy of the doser. The testing time needs to be at least two hours after the dose cause of how All For Reef breaks down and adds Alk to the tank. I tested every other day till I got multiple test results that were with in .1 of each other. I would suggest getting a doser for All For Reef, unless you can always manually dose the exact same time. The cost is pretty cheap. I got the Kamoer Bluetooth model on sale, the All For Reef powder, a beaker, and a lab mixer for about $100. That allows me to make 6 liters of All For Reef, and my Fluval uses 3 ml a day. So it will last a long time.
@TheFishTankGuy
@TheFishTankGuy Жыл бұрын
Kevin, thanks for all of this information. I decided to purchase some All-For-Reef and give this method a try. I've been trying to keep up with weekly water changes and I'm finding that my ALK numbers are still dropping. I'm guessing I have too many corals in the tank for a weekly water change to be enough to replenish what's being used. I have one final question for you. Given the current state of my tank (ALK is around 5-6), should I raise ALK numbers to 8-9 BEFORE using All-For-Reef? I'm under the impression that All-For-Reef is used to maintain proper levels, not increase them. I've tried to watch some YT videos about it, and no offense to those videos, but man do they suck. Your explanation was better than anything I was able to find.
