HEMI TICK Explained (Easily) - The Cause and How to Diagnose

Күн бұрын

Today I dive into the notorious Hemi Tick and attempt to explained what the cause is and how to easily diagnose it. Also I talk about how to potential prevent the Hemi tick from happening in the first place. A lifter roller needle bearing failure is often the cause of the Hemi Tick. However, the Hemi also has issue with exhaust manifold leaks, which at times can make it hard to differentiate and diagnose between an internal tick (The "Hemi Tick") and a simple exhaust leak. I own a 2017 ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi and wanted to really see what was going on. I'm a diesel mechanic myself and figured that I could shed some light on the mystery of the Hemi Tick. What's frustrating is that these engines are known for their lifter failures and Chrysler has really kept their lips sealed on the issue. My honest opinion, is that these engines for the most part make it past the 5 year 100,000km warranty period and that's all Chrysler cares about. But, let me know if you think I'm wrong! I hope this video helped de-mystifying the Hemi tick.

For perspective ive been a Chrysler and benz certified mechanic for a decade now. You've made good points, and in my opinion this problem should be recalled. We do have an updated maintenance schedule for the 5.7. Its now 3500 instead of 5000. Due to the design you are correct that the bearing dry out ,but the oil used is light enough to lubricate sufficiently until its ran any longer than 5k miles. We've had 5.7s with as many as 240k miles with no major mechanical issue. Should still be recalled

Awesome thanks for the feedback. It does seem like there is compounding issues and not just one clear cut problem. one thing that is crazy is that my 2017 ram tells me to change my oil after like 14,000km. I do it every 5,000 but still nuts that some people trust the "oil life" gauge and get it changed once or twice a year max. so dirty oil could be a large issue as well. Idk it is kind of odd that FCA hasn't addressed the issue.

Sometimes it is broken exhaust bolts... easy fix is to use shorty headers that mount up to stock exhaust or redo the exhaust with long headers. Bolts are notoriously broken because of cast iron manifolds verses aluminum heads... stainless steel headers will expand better with the aluminum heads... reducing the chances of breaking bolts. Port the journals on the crank and other port orifices to a wider angle will increase oil coverage... we used to do this in the machine shop to increase the life span of the parts with adding a performance oil pump.

The in block cam design limits the lift of the cam and its duration. So, Mopar put the cam higher in the block to make more horsepower available. Another possibility, and this will take some research and development, would be to put a line above the lifters to spray oil on the top of the lifters and cam lobes. Besides using better needle bearings, you could use bronze bushing type lifters. I think Crane makes them.

Glad you talked about it. In my opinion, this is a pretty severe design flaw and everyone always acts as if the Hemi is the best engine ever... I can’t stop thinking about this. I love my Hemi but this is not what a good engine is supposed to be like, and what’s worse is that Chrysler hasn’t fixed or acknowledged it, even though it’s been an issue for over a decade. Mine does it very slightly and when I top off the oil every few months, it’s completely quiet for like 2 days. For me it’s just extremely annoying because I usually do idle a lot, and I’ve been trying not to, to avoid any catastrophic damages. I’m looking at trading it in right now. I’ll miss the Hemi because it was a fun power train and by far the best sounding, but damn this feels like walking on eggshells.

Decent video. I like replacing these cams, motors are gravy. I work for a chrysler dealer so you can understand. The hemi’s and 3.6’s are the speciality. Rule of thumb is if there’s ticking on cold start and goes away, then it’s an exhaust leak. But you can tell before that because there’s a tisk type noise. Lifter tick will always be there, hot or cold. And what i’ve found is that hemi’s with lots of idle time and going too long on oil changes will get you there quicker

My hemi tick was the crank shaft disintegrating. My SSV was a Sherriff's department pursuit truck that blew a head and sent metal into the crank bearing journal and into the oil journals, constant rotation with metal friction tore the crank apart from vibration and that was found upon dealer teardown. Lifetimr Warranty covered a new engine all I had to pay for was a rental vehicle and a set of exhaust manifold studs and nuts.

How long do you think I can drive with this issue? I need my truck to be working for the next couple weeks. It can't be sitting in a shop waiting on a new cam or possibly a new engine. I'm not entirely sure if it's the exhaust manifold bolts or the lifters though. I started it up and it was ticking (the engine was already warm) and after like 10 seconds the ticking stopped. Part of me thinks it's the exhaust manifolds because the ticking stopped, but the other part of me thinks it's the lifters because the engine was already warm, and the tick was quite loud.

I had a friend who had to replace the upper valve and rocker, cam , lifter assembly because of this problem,,, but what he told me he did was use a different grade of engine oil than what the manufacture recommended. The recommended oil grade is 5W20...he started to use 10W30, then 10W40 then went to 20W50,,,he thought the thicker oil would help lubricate the internal parts better, but what happened , and he found out was the oiling ports inside the Hemi are very tiny, ,the thicker grade oils couldn't get through to areas where needed. ,,especially at cold start. My Hemi has that tick, I'm at 208,000 but I've always used the right oil,,5W20..switched to full synthetic years ago, and always change on time. My tick goes away under power, but faintly is there. Oil pressure is very good, so I'll just keep going till it goes. You stated that idling is bad for these engines,, what do you do in stop and go city traffic,,??..or stuck in stopped traffic on the highway..??..idling is probably unavoidable.....my truck is a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500,,,,hopefully I don't have the defect..

As a mechanic I would tell you to never add oil additives but I do use lucas oil treatment and a good non synthetic 5w20 and it seems to really quite things down. I keep oil changes to NO MORE THAN 5 K, no short trips and I use premium fuel . If I do get a failure I will just stab in a stage 2 cam and lifter set and program the mds out. The Hemi is not a SOHC engine. It is a cam in block engine. They raised the cam to allow for shorter pushrods and a better angle to the rocker system. The oiling may be an issue. If so, I am of the opinion it’s due to the lightweight fully synthetic oil dripping completely off the hard parts between runs. The unlimited late model dirt cars tried the fully synthetic oils and went back to the semi synthetic oils so that the needle bearings in camshaft bearing (in the block and not the lifters) retained oil and didn’t suffer from dry start up failure. I run both Marvel mystery oil and Lucas oil stabilizer in my 2017 Ram. I run the prescribed oil and change it with the oil monitor reminder. I have just shy of 70,000 miles on it so far and it doesn’t appear to be having this issue. A good trick is to cut the oil filter open at the change to examine the filter media. If there’s metal fragments in the filter media you more than likely have this issue.

This was very helpful indeed, it's the only video I found, that explains why it happened. I have 5.7L 2014 Challenger, with a 65k mile on it, it starts ticking 2 months ago 🙃, after a quick diagnosis, the mechanic told me a lifter/s need to be changed asap. With quarantine, my needs, and almost constant curfew in my country, I didn't get a chance to arrange for a fix, I'm just doing it now. However, because I don't have full trust with mechanics (sorry) i have few questions that maybe you can help me with, please, to increase my knowledge. - Do they need to take the cam out and visually diagnose it? Or it's good if he said it's good because i have no code for missfire? - If the cam is good, is there any parts need/recommended to be replaced because we took of the gasket? (In other words, before we open the engine, should i only buy lifters, or some other parts too?) Thank you. *English is not my first language.

Depends on the state of the cam. if you have caught it early enough I have heard guys not having the replaced the cam. But, most of the time the came lobs are very warn out. If it were me, I would want to inspect the cam shaft. you are already into the engine pretty good with new lifters might as well do the extra work and pull the cam to see if the lobs are okay. my guess, depending on again, how quickly you caught this, the cam is likely damaged to some extend. I wouldn't re-use any gaskets, buy all new and save yourself the hassle.

The second question, They updated the lifters, that means if I buy the original mopar replacement lifters for my 2014 I would get the new version of them or will still the same as the ones that came with my hemi 2014? A lot of times the confusion between lifter tick and exhaust leaks can be solved pretty fast. Unless you have a major hole in your exhaust or it’s rusted out..exhaust leak ticks go away after about 3 to 5 minutes of driving it as the exhaust gets hot and expands. Lifter tick is constant when you have parts that badly worn. I hear so many people say they have lifter tick after 5 minutes of running the engine. This happens to several different brands (Chevy and dodge especially) even when they keep it serviced and under 100k miles usually it’s not a lifter tick at all. Don’t freak. Stop by an exhaust shop and they’ll inspect it and can tell you in 5 minutes..I do not recommend you stuff the exhaust lol not everyone is smart enough for that trick without overstuffing and doing some real muffler or even engine damage with blow back into the exhaust manifold!

Took off the valve cover and noticed one or two worn out lifters. In addition to that an area of the camshaft worn out. So, the 4.7 liter V8 engine and the 5.7 liter HEMI V8 have lifter issues. I think 2017 or 2018 model year Chrysler vehicles equipped with the 5.7 liter HEMI V8 doesn't have the lifter issue anymore.
