Luke Skywalker recently got his own Disney Plus special for his appearance in Season 2 of The Mandalorian. Since there was so much praise given to Luke Skywalker in the Mandalorian, I wanted to revisit the time his character wasn't so appreciated. Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi is insanely divisive. Many people love The Last Jedi while others hate The Last Jedi. In this video, I wanted to talk about Luke Skywalker and why we'll never agree about him in The Last Jedi.

In the end I love how he embraces the heroism of the Jedi, even despite his reservations about their failures. He put aside his own feelings, and embraced the myth and the legend, knowing that the Jedi's status of a symbol of hope for the galaxy outweighed their mistakes and flaws. Plus, he died in the most peaceful and non-violent way possible. Best application of Yoda's teachings in ESB

Quote from The Last Jedi: "At the height of their powers, they allowed Darth Sidious to rise, create the Empire, and wipe them out. It was a Jedi Master who was responsible for the training and creation of Darth Vader." The Last Jedi was not anti-Luke, it was anti-Jedi. Many fans still believe the Jedi to be some kind of all-wise superheroes who must always win, although in the classics they want to push Luke to patricide and in the prequels we follow their wrong attitude and failure step by step. Luke forgiving his father was not the Jedi way, it was his very own choice. Luke always was a different kind of hero. He was and is a hero because of his own heart, not because he's a Jedi. That is what his character portrayal in Episode VIII is all about.
@ewalsh7682

I would actually say that TLJ is pro-Jedi. Luke’s whole arc is about the fact that, no, he was wrong to be on the island and Rey and subsequently Yoda teach him that the galaxy needs the Jedi, which is why he becomes a symbol of hope in the Battle of Crait. That’s why Luke is so good in TLJ. He goes from hopeless to the new hope (no pun intended)

@@ewalsh7682 I think the movie's stance on Jedi is complicated. TLJ criticizes what the Jedi were in the past, but aknowledges that their existence is important as a source of hope for the galaxy. People's perception of the Jedi did more good to the galaxy than the ACTUAL Jedi.

Agreed, he wasn't OC. In the classics he already withdrew from the fight afraid of putting his friends in danger. He who was always so forgiving couldn't forgive himself for having failed his nephew. I think the outrage of some fans about how close Luke came to attacking and possibly killing Ben, and the anger that they felt towards Rian Johnson for daring to besmirch noble Luke’s characterization, was the same type of outrage within the story that Luke would have felt towards himself for allowing himself to become overwhelmed in that way, with clearly ruinous results. They say, “Luke wouldn’t do that!” and Luke would have agreed. Luke the Legend wouldn’t. And yet he did. And that’s what he had to live with. And that whole story of how he got into that hole and got out of it is some real stuff that viewers could take something valuable from and apply it to their own lives. I love The Last Jedi and think Luke's death saving the resistance was the epitome of non-violent selfless sacrifice and what it means to be a Jedi.

Great summary of objective vs. subjective. There is really no such thing as a movie being “objectively bad” because any objective criteria chosen to critique a movie are subjectively chosen by the person. That is why a claim like punk rock is objectively worse than jazz doesn’t work. Anyone can subjectively choose objective criteria that will make something “good” or “bad”. As for Luke, I don’t know why his character in the TLJ has to be a “love it” or “hate it” situation. There are many things I liked about Luke’s portrayal in TLJ (like struggling with failure), and some things that didn’t work for me (like throwing his lightsaber over his shoulder). Even so, I can still appreciate what the movie was trying to say about heroes, and think about it in a reasonable way and enjoy it.

After much thought I understand why a lot of people felt hurt about Luke from the Last Jedi and even though I like it I shouldn't discount about others feel as well cause I get that Luke meant a lot to many fans and they felt betrayed cause the setup for the longest time was for Luke to be this wise Jedi Master not this broken man. Also looking up many interviews recently I didn't like that it was Ryan's goal to have some sort of division in his film cause people should make films to entertain, put smiles on faces and make you think about the overall message at least that should be the case for Star Wars. It should not be intended to divide your audience. I think they should of done better with the execution of making Luke into this broken character cause I think if they handled some things better it would of not had this negative impact. I still like the idea of Luke being broken but they definitely needed to flesh some things about it more instead of it being this flashback.

Sure it's a hard pill to swallow but it's at least deeply explained through dialogues. Having everything visually shown to us could actually hurt the story even more. As of now, much is up to our imagination of the exact events that took place during Luke's training with Kylo. Having us only see the most important moment where Luke is clouded by the future just like his father and Ben reading the situation wrong is enough. I think flashbacks can be a tool for very lazy storytelling if they are overused, like Book of Boba for example. If there will ever be revealed that there's a story that visually explains to us everything from Luke's perspective I wouldn't jump to hate it, although I would want them to be careful. I think the better way to approach it (if we really need visual evidence) is to show analogies with similar characters to Luke. Like Obi Wan. Having Obi Wan question the jedi religion in different ways could certainly benefit our understanding of Luke's way of thinking. I think the biggest thing that made Luke's change of character work for me, is that his way of thinking in the beginning of TLJ makes perfect sense from what we learned from the prequels. Sure I don't agree with it, we are not supposed to agree with this philosophy. But TLJ is the only movie that actually acknowledges the prequels existence and understands its importance. The prequels had a very sad ending where the jedi, even though at the height of their power, had failed and left the galaxy in misery. The fact that Luke, even though seeing their failure and have many good reasons to not recreate the jedi, he still sees hope in them and want to learn from their flaws. It actually makes the prequels' ending less sad in a way.

If I’m not mistaken there’s a deleted seen in TLJ where Luke tricks Rey into believing the island was under attack and when she gets there she finds out it’s just a party among the natives or something like that. Luke’s point was to teach her that the Jedi shouldn’t get involved in conflicts not their own. She yells at Luke for tricking her and says something along the lines of “I used to believe in the legend of Luke Skywalker but I guess I was wrong.” Personally I think they should’ve kept this in as it makes Luke come to terms with the fact the galaxy still needs him (and the Jedi at large). Which leads perfectly into his appearance at the end. Some of the scenes that they cut from this movie would’ve done a lot to minimize a lot of the criticisms ppl have with this movie

Luke's point in that scene was that the Jedi (were wrong) taught that they should be dispassionate and not take sides. When in truth they should act in the face of injustice. Rey, who just made an ass of herself, yells at him out of embarrassment both for her actions but also out of the fact that Luke doesn't want to help.

The thing is, as my mom is constantly reminding me, is that who we are now is not who we will be. This is a 30 years older Luke. Mark Hamill is not the same man that he was 30 years ago. So why should Luke be? Expecting Luke to be the exact same man that he was in TROTJ is unrealistic. People grow. People change. But the thing is, we don't always change for the better. People don't always become wiser as they get older. We're just so used to seeing our heroes better over time that any negative change for them is shocking. Which is why I think it was a risky creative decision on Rian's part to portray Luke like this. Risky, but kind of refreshing. Our heroes aren't perfect. They are bound to fail just like we do and I think that's the point Rian was trying to make.

Your example of how the same thing could have happened with Revenge of the Sith if the movies had been made in numerical order is perfect. I think a lot of people would've been upset about Anakin's fall to the dark side if we hadn't known it was going to happen. Hell, imagine if Clone Wars would have been released in its entirety before that movie was made. People never would've believed it possible for Anakin to become Darth Vader. Even I have a hard time believing it sometimes, in truth. Anyway, seriously, great job. Will be sharing this.

I totally agree with you... But before I continue, let me first fill you in about my personal history with STAR WARS, so you know exactly where I'm coming from when I return to this topic: A long time ago in the summer of 1977, I was a 10 year old kid who, one day, walked into a movie theatre to see "some far-out space movie" that was rapidly becoming "the talk of the town" on the schoolyard playground... I walked in an innocent, naive little child... I walked out CHANGED FOREVER. On that glorious day, I had seen the greatest movie that would EVER be made... STAR WARS... This groundbreaking film from writer/director George Lucas TOTALLY changed my life... It absolutely blew me away, filling my heart with joy, stimulating my imagination, and kick-starting my love for cinema... That day was momentous for me, and I would never be the same again.. I will never forget it.. From the moment the 20th Century Fox fanfare and John Williams' theme blasted through the theatre speaker system, and "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" and that "Flash Gordon inspired" opening crawl came on the screen, and that gigantic Star Destroyer appeared, flying over my head, towering above me as I sat in my theatre seat... and kept going... and going...and going... and as the entire audience gasped with amazement... at that very moment, I was instantaneously mesmerized, transfixed, and transformed... and I was only 5 minutes into the movie... I still had 2 more hours to go! As the movie continued, I was thrilled by the heroic exploits of the dashing smuggler Han Solo and the feisty Princess Leia... But most importantly... I was was thrilled and emboldened by the brave, heroic, idealistic actions of the farm boy turned hero of the galaxy, who could do no wrong... Luke Skywalker! Six years later, after the equally excellent THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, I saw him redeem his father, and help him defeat the phantom menace known as Emperor Palpatine in the also excellent RETURN OF THE JEDI, thus saving the galaxy from the evils of the Galactic Empire ... Or so we thought... After the excellent Prequel run of THE PHANTOM MENACE, ATTACK OF THE CLONES, and REVENGE OF THE SITH twenty years later, we got the most recent continuation of the Skywalker Saga in the past few years with the Sequel Trilogy... and my brave, heroic, idealistic hero of the galaxy... who could do no wrong... was now a guilt-ridden, broken man who exiled himself to an island... AND I LOVED IT ! The Last Jedi shows us that heroes are not always perfect... They can be flawed, damaged, and make mistakes... They are not as superficial and one-dimensional as I might have thought when I was 10 years old watching STAR WARS back in 1977... They are complex... they go through many trials and tribulations throughout their life... and then, in the true tradition of the Hero's Journey... they emerge on the other side victorious, having learned valuable lessons and becoming much wiser, happily surprising us with with their words and actions when they do... And once again, just as had happened to me 34 years earlier when I first saw ROTJ, I was thrilled and emboldened by the brave, heroic, idealistic actions of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker... The hero's journey was complete. None of us are the same person that we were 10, 20, 30 years ago... So why should Luke be? If you were expecting Luke to be the exact same man that he was in the Original Trilogy, that was an unrealistic expectation on your part.... We all grow and change over time... and sometimes we don't always change for the better... Maybe one needs to have been around long enough on this planet to understand and appreciate that... People don't always become wiser as they get older... Sometimes even the wisest person can make mistakes... It's just that most people are used to seeing their childhood heroes as infallible in their minds, and it is difficult to see them in any other way... particularly a negative way. Sure, the filmmakers could have just dished out a "bad-ass" Luke Skywalker who kicked butt and took names, but instead, they took a more logical, reasonable... and quite frankly, refreshing... approach. Our heroes are not always "perfect". They are human beings, just like you and me, and that was the whole point of Luke's arc in the Sequel Trilogy.. I loved Luke's character arc in TLJ... Was I taken aback at first? Sure... It may have seemed unexpected at first, but it kept in the tradition of the past... Has everyone forgotten, by the way, that both Yoda AND Obi-Wan did the EXACT SAME THING same thing by going into exile?... (What is it that Lucas is always quoted as saying?... "It's like poetry... It rhymes")... Luke saw what he perceived to be the problems of the Jedi (some of them well-founded)... He saw history repeating itself... and thought that he was doing more harm than good for the galaxy, and decided to take himself out of the equation... In the end, however, he realized that the galaxy NEEDED him... Now, was this character arc NEEDED?... You could argue that ROTJ ended PERFECTLY and it undoes that... and I might even agree to a point... But this character arc was so unique and refreshing to see, and done so well in TLJ, that I can absolutely appreciate it... Maybe it would have helped if we the audience could have SEEN on screen a little more of how this all went down (more flashbacks), then maybe it might have been a little easier to digest... I won't argue with that either... All I will say is that... AS IS... I LOVED how it played out... If I have any major complaints with the Sequel Trilogy, it would be that I have ALWAYS thought that: #1 - As I stated above, more flashbacks would have been appreciated to flesh out some story details to better explain exactly what happened between the Original Trilogy and the Sequel Trilogy (Luke and Ben Solo, the rise of Snoke and the Emperor's return, Rey's family lineage) instead of merely just a few throw-away lines, which is all we got. #2 - They should have put a lot more emphasis on the effect of what Luke did at the end of TLJ... Sure, they show the slave children inspired by his heroic deed at the end of TLJ... but I it isn't addressed AT ALL in TROS... If they had done so, then when Lando arrives with the massive fleet of civilians from around the galaxy in that film's climax, the purpose of Luke's sacrifice (and how he brought HOPE back to the galaxy) would have come into full bloom... Instead, we have to ASSUME that happened... #3 - IF ONLY Force Ghost Anakin and Force Ghost Luke could have been SEEN PHYSICALLY ON SCREEN standing alongside Rey to help finally take down the Emperor (instead of just hearing their voices) at the end of TROS, that would have PERFECTLY tied all three trilogies together much more effectively, and made all the difference in the eyes of MANY Sequel critics. #4 - More Prequel references... And more R2-D2 (He was hardly in it!). In the end, though, I do love the Sequel Trilogy... Maybe not quite as much as the Original Trilogy or the Prequel Trilogy (which are perfect)... but I do love it... I do have minor issues with it... but Luke's arc in TLJ is definitely not one of them... The Skywalker saga is about family... It is about legacy... It showed the sins of the father being visited upon the children... Luke, after saving his father, and forgiving him for all the suffering that he had caused, then devoted his entire life to atone for his father's sins, but then... in a moment of weakness... "which passed like a fleeting shadow"... he tragically fell prey to that evil legacy himself... But in the end, he triumphantly overcame it... That is what is known as GOOD STORYTELLING... TLJ did that. Once Luke finally DID return at the end... "WOW"... What a moment! That is one of the absolute GREATEST scenes in all of STAR WARS! It still gives me goose-bumps just THINKING about it... So, "Bravo" to everyone involved... 1977'S STAR WARS has always been my favorite movie of all time... Luke Skywalker has always been my childhood hero... And nothing he did in the Sequel Trilogy made me change my mind about that.

I love ep7 and ep9 and I like parts of The Last Jedi but I'm not jazzed about the movie overall. I have no big problems with Luke's actions in ep8 but his death just seemed abrupt, unearned, and obligatory. Kylo's like "I'll kill you" and Luke's like "can't. I'm not really here, haha" but then 5 seconds later Luke goes "oh wait, I guess I'm dying anyway for no reason at all, bye".

I agree with you, I felt like the jump felt a bit like the film meltdown in the second Grindhouse movie, but personally, my gripes with TLJ was more in the physical than the character. You may or may not agree with how they treated Luke, but, ultimately, that only affects Luke. The Holdo maneuver affects the entire universe.

It probably depends on how willing you are to fill certain blanks yourself, or your interpretation to certain hints. Like, I can infer Luke's attempt on Ben stemmed from his fear of losing his loved ones (which almost made him turn to the dark side once), and I can understand Luke's view on the Jedi based on everything we know about their history. So I'm not too bothered about not knowing exactly how Luke got here. With enough thinking, it's easy to come to a believable conclussion.
@matti.8465
@matti.8465 2 жыл бұрын
Of course, one could say the movie SHOULD answer all of those specifics. While others could say it's good to leave some things up to interpretation, and that a movie doesn't need to explain everything. I think both stances are valid, and the one you subcribe to will affect your feelings on stuff like TLJ Luke.

Maybe most of us will never agree on Luke in this movie, I garentee Even when the mandalorian and other shows connect and add more context, there will be those that will just shut the door on the franchise entirely. That's their decision, not My place to judge. I've said alot that I want connections to the sequels, especially to TROS because something about it (even though it isn't my favorite) feels like it can be improved. I fully acknowledge that it's messy, but if there's even a small chance to make it better, again I want that.

Great analysis. I realized a bit ago that TLJ was set up to fail with Luke by TFA, because the Luke TLJ haters wanted would’ve been there for the events of TFA. For them, there would never be a good enough reason for him to at least not be there to help save Han-even if they don’t want to admit that. I really liked TLJ when I first saw it but I recognize it’s flaws now as well. What’s more, TLJ ruined Star Wars for me-not because of the movie, but because of the reaction to it. Once I had to face the amount of so-called “fans” that couldn’t even be bothered to understand how Lucas warned of embracing selfishness and hate and how Anakin doing both to protect things he supposedly loved was in fact a betrayal to those things that lead him to becoming Vader I mostly felt disconnected from Star Wars-couldn’t even watch TLJ a second time cuz all it did was remind me of how much hate there was-from BOTH sides of the fight. I get frustrated over connections to the sequels because it feels like they want to rely on Filoni to justify storytelling decisions made in them that weren’t thought through, whereas something like Clone Wars and even Rebels felt more like an expansion of the themes Lucas was attempting to include but failed to execute properly.

I’ll play devil’s advocate. Doesn’t the existence The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi negate the happy ending and everything Luke, Leia and Han did in The Original Star Wars from 1977? The opening crawl states ‘Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy.’ That’s as definitive as you can get, but when Empire Strikes Back begins, we are right back to square one of the civil war.

And another thing and this might be a little serious but I've been thinking about this for quite a while regarding the fandom and what they should all do because it doesn't matter what era we will have and how many awesome content we will get in time the fandom as you said we'll never agree and you know why because they have a hard time letting go of things or listening to each other so in all honesty if the fighting can't stop and one can only make so many videos complaining about the toxic then here is what should happen but probably not because many are too comfortable in their own spots everyone from hardcore OG fans, Prequel fans, EU/Legends fans, clone wars, rebels fans, sequel trilogy Disney fans, Reylo's, fandom menace, non fandom menace but still negative towards Disney era uh...people, Mandalorian fans, Rey Skywalker stans, Adam Driver stans, Knight of the Old Republic fans and Ahsoka stans you name it!! Fanboys and fangirls alike all need to be in one room together and have a nasty, screaming fall out, everyone has something they want to say then let's all come together, face one another yell it out, let it all out! Throw punches, throw chairs, pull some hairs out, shout out every name in the book. Yell and scream so loud that aliens on Mars can hear us. Forget this years Olympics this is where the real games begin! Who needs wrestling when we can have this! Woo Woo!! Will it change anything...maybe not but if no one can be civil or move forward learning to coexist and cope with each other's differences then maybe a huge fight needs to commence it's like a family that has problems with each other and refuses to face one another or agree to disagree and it may come to a huge, huge yelling fall out in order to have some peace. Like that scene in Marriage Story where Scarlett Johanson and Adam Driver's characters went all out and said the most horrible things to one another until they broke down and cried together realizing that underneath the love was still there. Perhaps the fandom truly does care for one another....I mean hey there's conventions and celebrations like the ones we will have next year God Willing, so it's got to be there somewhere. I don't know. I wanted to get that off my chest.

To everyone watching imagine thinking you know someone’s character better then the person who has played him and has experienced his journey first hand likely BEFORE YOU WERE EVEN BORN. To put simply Luke’s character in the sequels is inconsistent to his OT self, a contradiction, in which their is no reason for him to be the way he is in the sequels Also there is a huge difference between Anakin becoming vader vs luke becoming how he is in the sequel 1 vader was already set up and established, he is already defined as a character, the prequels are his origin on how a good person can become an evil one, as long as it makes sense which despite all the problems in the prequels it ultimately does make sense, and people who are fans with Anakin in general never backlashes because it’s known he is the prerequisite to vader and it must make sense. If it didn’t then their is right to be angry because how you get from point A to point B is what matters 2 luke on the OT already had everything about him established, he is already defined as a character, you can’t make him completely different to the point of contradictory whcih is what happens, if Luke ended up the way he was because he was too optimistic and did try his up most to change ben solos path but ended up failing then luke then has reason to act the way he does to an extent, more so if his friends and family renounced him and they cut all ties, everything has to add up for his character to end up the way he does the problem is context is everything in which in the sequels what is their is nonsense to anyone who actually thinks What makes something good and bad is all dependent on context aka the objective factors The root of all evil is not money pride or even power ladies and gentlemen it’s ignorance As every bad thing is due to cognitive dissidence, being blind to consequence or unawareness

That being said I can understand why someone might love this change and I am more than willing to respect that opinion. This is kind of a random question but do you think you would ever touch The High Republic again? I very much thought it was building up to the idea of Jedi vs Sith needed to die. The grey (Jedi) seemed like the logical way to actually bring BALANCE to the force. Not to eradicate the dark side, but embrace it and turn it to benefit the overall flow of things. Jedi were like space police, Sith were trying to take over the universe. Maybe it just ends up with the grey sort of laying low but bestowing knowledge. More like Buddhist monks or something. So when Luke said he wanted the JEDI to end, I assumed this was all leading up to Rey and Kylo teaming up, and Luke beginning to see a path for the Force to continue. Casting aside the preconceived notion that they even should be enemies, pressured to do things by those who proceeded them. The last scene we see in Episode 9 being Rey and or Kylo teaching Broom Boy the ways of the force, and not training him to be a Jedi or Sith but just to be one with the universe, casting aside prejudices (a form of hate) because hate, inevitably, leads to the dark side. To me, this felt like the way to bring balance. It was foretold that a skywalker would bring balance. So why not Luke, or Kylo, via essentially killing the concept of good and bad Force users?

I know that you're not trying to debate the quality of Luke's portrayal in TLJ, but I fkn hate Luke in TLJ. I guess it makes in-universe sense that he would change so much because of the 30 years time gap, but he felt like a *_completely_* different character from himself in the OT, especially since this is basically the first time we are seeing him since ROTJ. Even a KZfaqr named The Closer Look commented on this. They should have done what they did with Han Solo in TFA and add some changes that would make the character more interesting but still keep the overall identity of the character in place.

I have no problem on how they portray any character in a sequel. But you have to develop that character if he or she is drastically different. If Rian Johnson cut Canto Bight and inserted 5-6 flashbacks that led up to that fateful night between Luke and Ben, I think more fans would be able to accept hermit Luke. There was an opportunity to reunite Han, Luke and Leia in a flashback as they drop off Ben. We see optimistic Luke and see his Jedi academy. Another flashback could be the first crack in their training as Luke starts to sense Vader in his nephew. Another flashback could be with Luke having a heart to heart with Ben, but he’s not getting through to him. Another flashback is Ben almost kills another Jedi Palawan in their training after he loses his cool. Now we start to see Luke’s POV and we may actually agree with him that something has to be done with Ben. Instead we never get any development that convinced me of this drastic change we see 30 years later. It just wasn’t earned. And for the record, I hate Mandallorian Luke just as much as that’s even more insulting and wasn’t earned either. Still love your videos as I like to be challenged with different POV’s.

Of the sequel trilogy, The Last Jedi is the only movie I enjoyed and have rewatched multiple times. The Force awakens is too cloying with the nostalgia and Rise of Skywalker is insulting on too many levels-- it's one giant face palm. Interestingly, Palpatine somehow being alive in Rise of Skywalker didn't bother me as much as... oh, 90% of the rest of the movie. JJ dropped a giant steaming turd with that one and the 10% of the movie that didn't have me cringing aren't enough to get me to suffer through that monstrosity ever again.

Gold Man, Finn was never abandoned by the sequel trilogy. Since, I am an EXTREMELY smart sequel-defender, I can observe that he gets a good amount of screen time in TLJ and TROS. According to my huge brain, it is TOTALLY not like screen time has nothing to do with with the stuff you talked about in the video like passive/active protagonist, usefulness to the plot, or character arcs. This is a mockery comment. I'm mocking a guy named T.E. who commented "Disappointed you by into this narrative. He was in no way abandoned. He has the most screen time of anybody outside of Rey. His arc in TLJ is integral to the themes of the film and the ST as a whole. And his role in TROS is the natural culmination of what came before. If Finn was "abandoned" so was everyone else aside from Rey and Ben. So was Han and Leia in the OT for that matter." on your video about how Finn was abandoned by the ST.

The list reason why Luke Skywalker is like that in The Last Jedi is because 1. His selfishness was shown in War of the Bounty Hunters Crossover when he ranted a plot for taking his shot to erupt a volcano that was under a Star Destroyer which later got destroyed by that volcanic eruption. The reason Luke missed that shot because he had a Force Vision that Darth Vader was after Han Solo. 2. He met Fallen Jedi Finn Barr’s former student who influenced him while getting another lightsaber. That student’s teacher was responsible for deceiving the Mon Calla king to let the imperials do aerial bombardment on the capital while the fleet was escaping. And that fleet would later become a vital part of the Rebel Alliance fleet. 3. Obi-Wan Kenobi should told Luke about his dad from his childhood to his fall at the end of the Clone Wars instead of telling the truth in a certain point of you. 4. Emperor Palpatine sent the Knight of Ren and their original leader, Ren to inflict tragedy on Luke by planting the seeds of the dark side to Ben Solo when he was a kid. The reason for that is because Luke found that Grogu’s blood is use to keep Supreme Leader Snoke alive and Luke was extremely close to expose him and his hiding planet of Exegol. 5. In his book called Secrets of the Jedi, he admits that he was Cut up in the Jedi future that he forgot to be a master. And that he did not note that the failures of the clone war era Jedis we’re meant to be lessons for the future generations. 6. Luke was busy with many other Jedi students that he neglected his nephew, Ben Solo.

We don't have to agree with everything. Three things I've learned never to discuss with other people: religion, politics, and the star wars sequel trilogy. Some people who don't like the sequel trilogy want to force their hatred onto everyone else. But there are some people who don't like it, but are mature about it. I'm glad you respect others opinions. Every time time someone says they like the sequel trilogy, toxic brats would call them "shills", or "fake fans". As long as they love content that is star wars content, are they not star wars fans?

Force awakens was where it started for me. And why I don't like force awakens. Luke would never hide or not help his family. I don't care, rotj and esb shows that. when he gives up training on dagobah and leaves just to go and save his friends. Luke hiding for 20+ years instead of trying to stop the 1st order makes no sense. Luke didn't give up on saving Vader, so he sure wouldn't give up on saving Ben. JJ Abrams started the problem. And personally the last Jedi is my favorite of the sequels. Mostly cuz at least rian tried to fix Luke but it was almost impossible with what Abrams left him with. Rian still made a decent film unlike with JJ films tros and force awakens which I absolutely did not like those 2 films.

I understand the cognitive dissonance people experience between the Luke they remember and Old Man Luke. But here’s the difference between that seeming paradox and Palpatine’s return as Palpaclone: Old Man Hermit Luke was set up by the previous movie. That’s why one, while it may not represent “their Luke,” makes sense and the other is awful. “Luke Skywalker has disappeared.” These are the first words of the opening crawl of TFA. Much of the movie is spent trying to find the map to get to him. But Palpatine? Not a statement, not a word of dialogue, not an image, not a shadow (fore or otherwise) to hint that it was Agathine All Along. No amount of Filoni backfill is going to adequately make up for it, for me.

The reason why I did not like Luke’s character in the last Jedi was not so much the fact he gave up but rather the way he gave up and was presented. First of all his interactions with Rey had way too many childish Disney jokes in them. A problem that the whole sequel trilogy has, especially TROS there are entire videos on the they fly now sequence for example. Furthermore luke did not seem like look. I mean yes, people change, but he did not talk like luke act like Luke think like luke or have the presence luke had in the or or even legends material. Then there are logical inconsistencies. The map to find luke he left behind has literally no reason he wanted to go on a planet and live there alone and unbothered till he passes away. There not being a single scene of him talking about han and only one of him talking to lea hinders the movie from exploring their relationship after bens fall to the dark side. He tried to kill Ben anyway until he woke up and it was to late to say sorry or explain what he was doing there. This is what I did not like.

😂 As an objective viewer I will say that the SEVERE disappointment in what was done to the LEGACY family was entirely predictable. It is not rocket science to assume that when you take heroes from a cinematic film from a famous franchise and DO NOT handle them like the special characters they are, FANS are going to notice. ........ I know that entertainment is subjective but there are reasons why in this particular case there would at best be scrutiny at worse be backlash. 1. The films are not original works they àre SEQUELS, so fans are going to be more hyper sensitive to characterization of old characters. 2. It was pretty obvious the creators were pushing the old characters to the side to focus on the new ones. Writers have already learned that it is not necessary to kill characters or stifle their spirit to focus on new ones. 3. The legacy characters were given a happy ending in the last films. The sequels basically tore that down with a bitter thread to not only the old heroes but their child as well, and the Skywalker/Solo characters were basically ⚰️ 4. As already stated Star Wars was a FAMOUS franchise so it's natural for fans to be defensive of characters. And once you piss off the fans, they scrutinize even less significant details in a film. 5. The sequel trilogy was more abstract about any message of hope than the original films. There were darker moments between the family that even the first Star Wars avoided. We didn't have are family of heroes TECHNICALLY unite, reconcile with happiness, or fight together which disappointmented fans. .................... I personally think there are a lot of reasons to like the sequel movies, they definitely have their good points and a new audience could enjoy them. But I also definitely understand where the disappointment is coming from. One could argue that fans shouldn't feel that way...but what an audience should or does feel in response to fiction are two different things. There are predictable responses to readers and audiences when it comes to fandom and characters. Frankly I was thoroughly surprised the creators didn’t see the division coming.

Viewing Luke in the OT as optimistic and pessimistic in the ST is just an incredibly reductive perspective that ignores all the context and nuance surrounding Luke's decision making in the movies. Luke was both very optimistic and very pessimistic in every film, depending on what the story was. Seeing the light in Vader for example? That wasn't optimism. He has the force which allowed him to see that Anakin was still alive in the shell known as Vader. That's not being optimistic, that's just being objective. Luke seeing the darkness in Ben is not pessimistic. He literally saw his future of him killing his Jedi students and Han Solo. That's just being objective.

I'm gonna be that bitch: 99% of the people who rant and rave about TLJ to this day....simply do not understand Star Wars. Oh, and "objectivity" in film analysis is beyond fucking stupid. And I completely disengage with anybody who wants to toss "objectively" out as some kind of declarative statement or gotcha. It's a shallow way to posture some sort of authority over a topic and it's fucking bullshit. Even most agreed upon criteria for "good films" is still a set of SUBJECTIVE standards made up by people - who are inherently subjective creatures. all "rules" about good filmmaking have been broken to resounding success throughout history. So no, film and art is not objective. Never will be.

@@thegoldman25 Fair enough, but I haven't heard one genuine criticism of Luke in TLJ that doesn't boil down to "me want badass Luke." Is there anything wrong at the face of that? No. I won't sit here and tell people they're wrong for feeling that way because it would make me a hypocrite. But I can do is think that mindset is silly at best, stupid and toxic at worst. Does it show an utter lack of misunderstand of the character? I think so, yes. Believe me, I myself had grand visions of the wizened Luke taking out bad guys left and right like a total badass when the ST was announced. I was a little jarred by TLJ when I was watching it in the theater, but not in a BAD way. See, I EXPECTED them to go for a Gandalf-esque Luke - wise and badass and intimidating. But what I got was soooo much more thoughtful. The more I thought about the notion of an old badass slashy-slash pew-pew Luke, the more that sounded incredibly shallow and dumb. I can't think of a more hollow ST than having geriatric Luke, Han, and Leia puttering around the Falcon blowing up TIES like 30+ years hadn't passed. Let's look at the OT. Not once does Luke win a lightsaber battle...until he succumbs to the Dark Side. Sure, he wields it well as a tool/weapon against various threats in the OT...but when it comes to DUELS? He doesn't have many. And he lost the first. His second only came out victorious because he was being manipulated and gave in the the Dark Side. Luke was never, not once, portrayed as the cool, swashbuckling badass so many fans seem to think the ST robbed them of. That was HAN, not Luke. Luke was a great character because of his HEART. Not his fighting prowess. I think misguided nostalgia and years of stagnant Legends material where Luke was pretty much perfect clouded many a fans mind.
