You’re lucky. I started with the 90s Caps and it was…. rough lol. And frankly embarrassing going to home games. Always felt like we should have been wearing the other team’s jerseys. Ovi saved hockey in the district. Without him, I have no doubt in my mind they would have moved.

@@bryanflores3633 they wouldn’t have moved. That wasn’t a concern, but Ovi is the first real superstar player they had in the history of the franchise. Started watching hockey when the Caps destroyed the Bruins 10-2 in that 65 goal season and as a dc sports fan it was cool to have a team that actually was good and fun to watch. A lot of pain insued when I found out what playoffs were gonna be like but it made the cup that much sweeter, and all things considered I'm blessed to be watching the greatest goal scorer of all time play on my favourite sports team.

Even if Ovi didn’t win the cup in 2018 he would still go down as one of the greatest goal scorers of all time…He was going in the hall regardless of whether they beat Pittsburgh in 2018 or not. No other current player is even in the top 25 in terms of goals all time.

Watching from Windsor, Ontario I am a life long Montreal Canadiens fan but always liked and rooted for the caps. When I was a kid in the 80's, I rooted for my Habs and against the Oilers lol. I often pinned my hopes on the Capitals because they had some really good teams and 3 or 4 years of 100+ point seasons. I remember all those years that the Oilers just demolished whoever represented the East and I kept wishing that the Caps could have a shot at them just once. Anyway, great organization and those classic red, white and Blue jerseys back in the day were just awesome.

Though he played 134 games in the NHL as a Cap, Pat Peake was drafted in 1991 at number 14 in the first round. He was talented but had severe injury problems. As to Volchkov, I heard the Caps were trying very hard to move the number 4 pick but couldn't complete a deal.

I remember vividly when the Caps and Scouts came into the league. To say the Caps were bad would be a gross understatement. In that time period we were privy to 2 of the worst expansion franchises in sports history and they are the 1974-75 Caps and the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I mean, they were comically bad. They were outscored on average 6-2. They gave up 446 goals. Ron Low, who was a middle of the road goalie, had a GAA of 5.45. Michel Belhumeur was 0-24-3. They gave up double digit goals 7 times. They were shut out 12 times. Their first 8 seasons they finished last 6 times and 4th twice. They. Were. Bad. They didn't make the playoffs until their 9th season.

Ovechkin was a Hart candidate after 40 games this past season, then ‘slumped’ for a while before having a nice ending and got 50 goals for the 9th time to tie Bossy and Gretzky before he injured his shoulder and was out for the rest of the season. If ovie gets another 50 goal season he stands alone with 10 and 830+ goals. Could get number 900 in 2025 before he turns 40 if he does it before the summer of 2025. May never see Backstrom again. I strongly believe Ovechkin would be on another team had they not won in 2018. Wonder who?

Shannon, how do you define a pure goal scorer? While Garts was a great player, I don't consider him as natural a goal scorer as say Mike Bossy was. Mike G was a hard worker and very fast. He had a high hard shot as I remember it with the Capitals but there was a period where I remember him flying in on right wing and he'd get a shot off but it was predictable and he would be stopped. As to Hunter, yes he was dirty, but he was also a good clutch player which sometimes I think gets lost. I would have liked to see him win a cup. He's the only one of the three Hunter brothers, Dale, Dave, and Mark, who didn't win a cup. Another NHL player I would have loved to see win a cup is Peter Stastny. Btw, if you haven't done a video on Stastny, that would be a good one. Gus was a very good 2 way player. He would have been higher on the points list if he had been injured less. No surprise Kolzig is number 1 in wins, though I'm a little surprised Pat Riggin wasn't on the wins list. His total puts him just outside the list at 67. He did finish 3rd and 4th in Vezina voting in his time with the Caps. Jensen tied him for 3rd in Vezina voting in '83-'84. That year Rod Langway won his second Norris trophy. To show how valuable Langway was to the Caps that year, he finished 2nd in the Hart behind some guy named Gretzky. Also I thought Beaupre played well in his time with the Caps. And as to OV passing Gordie Howe, though I'm a Caps fan and I look forward to this, I'm also a little torn because Howe imo is GOAT.

I've been watching the Caps fairly religiously since 1989, and have some random thoughts. 1. If Ovi breaks Gretzky's record, I think they waive the waiting period. 2. Mike Ridley was one of my all-time favorites, but I had forgotten how many points he put up. 3. Holtby had a medicore season in 2019, after they won the Cup, but I never really understood why they jettisoned him so quickly. 4. I had forgotten about Rejeans Savage. People thought he really was going to be a major talent. 5. Although he's a legend, I was never a fan of Dale Hunter. The points don't balance out the PM. That hit on Pierre Turgeon was unforgivable. And the Caps gave up the chance to draft Sakic for him. 6. Which reminds us that they traded away Filip Forsberg for Martin Erat. 7. I won't say the Caps can't win the Cup this year, but I think it's very unlikely. Ovechkin and Kuznetsove are still playing at a high level; Backstrom and Carlson aren't. Oshie is great in the playoffs, but gets hurt a lot. Darcy Kuemper isn't Braden Holtby. In 2018 they felt like a team of destiny. Now, they don't. 8. Frankly, I think it's time for a rebuild. And Ovi will still pass Gretzky.

I really hope that the Capitals will go back to the "Diving Eagle" logo and the "Capitoleum" logo as 2nd logo/ shoulder logo. Even the colors, but if not then at least the logos. They where some of the very best in NHL of all times!!! What they have now = original logo is so BORING and uninspiring to look at. It's not a real logo IMO. Even there current shoulder logo is a lot more a logo then that one. Washington: "Well How about just writing our name and print it in red & blue? Response: Well...it is to be honest very lack-lusting and feels like it don't express anything about our team. Kind of lame. The Eagle and capitoleum was though the opposite!". Washington: Nah it will be good. It's cheap and easy to make so that is good and what do you mean by identity? Well.... we don't care. Just do it!".
