I really do like the original Chase system. I think it accomplishes the playoff format well and 10 drivers is the perfect amount. I think that the only thing I would add would be some bonus points for wins going into the Chase

Damn... just the fact that Joey Logano would've been a 4 time champ if they kept the chase. That and we'd have 2 or 3 situations like the 1992 Hooters 500 rather than a system that arbitrarily creates that situation with 4 drivers. I know they would've raced differently, but I don't care in this case.

The Chase for the Sprint Cup is a way more appropriate name for NASCAR's top series too. Everything about it looks cooler in my eyes.

Even with any pre-2014 chase format, Logano would still win the war in 2018. 2015 could had amazing story lines. With those seed points that had 5 point difference between each driver, with today's points, that equals 1 point difference. So first place would be 10 points, drop to 10th place making it just 1 point. I honestly want any pre-2014 format to come back. Get rid of elimination and reduce the field down to 10 or 12 drivers. Let consistency decide who's a champion neither with the old chase or good ol winston format.

Honestly, I kinda like this format. I think it strikes a nice balance between consistency and entertainment. If we can't go back to the Winston Cup format, I would be happy to have this one. (Even though I'm not a Logano fan).

Honestly, I think it should return. In today's racing, we see luck instead of consistency. The perfect example is 2018 where Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and Truex Jr were the favorites to win the championship and in the end, we saw Logano win it all. The same situation could happen this year where Harvick and Hamlin could lose the championship after putting the best stats of their careers. I think it's unfair to put solid numbers all season just to win nothing at the end while a someone who won at a certain race wins the chip

As much as I have always been against the Chase, the 2004-06 format is the one format I'd actually want NASCAR to bring back if they decided to bring back an old Chase format. That or the 2011-13 format.

This tells me Logano is super consistent in the final 10 races of the season. Should be obvious to everyone by now.

The Chase is more unique to NASCAR then the playoffs are

-Get rid of “Win and you’re in” -Rename it “The Chase” -Get rid of stages, award Chase Points (5 points) to a race winner -Not related, but get rid of the competition caution -Get rid of rounds and make it a 10 race Chase, OR make the final 4 round last 3 races

I also did something the other month where 'playoff' points were calculated into the start of the Playoffs for each driver, keeping the current points format, but just let them race it out over the last ten races. Call it a 'fully modernized Chase'. The champions each year would be: 2014 - Joey Logano (narrowly over Harvick) 2015 - Kyle Busch (who made it into the Playoffs because win-and-you're-in is still in place) 2016 - Kyle Busch (really competitive Playoffs) 2017 - Martin Truex Jr (easily) 2018 - Joey Logano (by a single point over Kyle Busch) 2019 - Martin Truex Jr (even more easily)

Everytime I watch one of these videos it makes me realize that Nascar constantly screwing with the championship format has not only hurt the titles legitimacy, but it's also cost us a lot of great points battles.

I've been thinking about this for awhile

I miss the close head to head points battles that came with the chase. Besides 2014 the playoffs have actually been more boring and the elimination cutoffs aren’t even close anymore even though that’s the entire reason why they were created.

We need this format now

Personally, I think the old chase format (or really any of its variations from 2004-13) is a perfect blend between "down-to-wire" finishes that newer fans want, and the consistency that old-school fans want. It was kinda a shame it got a lot of hate mainly due to Jimmie's 5 straight titles, and with it being constantly tinkered with over its lifespan. I would bet that many that fans that are currently dissatisfied with the current format would be okay to take this format any day of the week over what we have now.

If this has taught us anything, be scared when that yellow and red 22 shows up to Phoenix this year

Hear me out. I think they need to gO back to the 2011-2013 system, they shOuld keep the stage races of course and points that help with points towards the regular season points. Playoffs start with the top ten of course and two wildcard spots with most wins from 11th through 20th in points. Playoffs reset with each driver getting 3 additional points for each wins. N the regular season champion gets 10 additional points towards the chase or maybe 5, 10 seems a bit drastic. And get rid of the elimination.

i wish they kept the original chase format from 2004 until 2014 when they changed it to the playoffs so my main man greg biffle could be a champion in all top 3 divisions

Went back and rewatched the video you did a couple years ago about if the Chase never happened. Between the what if the playoffs happened, no chase video and now this, we now know this. NASCAR really didn't need The Chase at all, perhaps The Chase happens anyway but definitely much later than it originally happened. Or we still don't have any playoff format at all in 2020, but it's just an hypothetical.

Maybe one addition to the points: current points amounts but add in the bonus points again (no stage stuff), but original Chase format.

Everyone's talking about if we went back to the chase format Let me tell you this: If A.J. didn't go out driving drunk or any of that stuff, he would've most likely still be in the Cup Series driving the #22 Logano would've probably not have a ride for the 2013 season and probably would've droven for an underfunded team and then the next couple years probably forgotten A.J. could've been a champion over Logano and would've more then just 1 win He did something stupid that cost him his job and that's the only reason why Logano's in what should've been A.J.'s ride I used to like Logano driving for the #20 Home Depot car and I actually have a diecast of it and ever since he injured Hamlin his former teammate, that's why I stopped liking him

Mix the Winston cup format with the 2004-06 Sprint cup format and do away with stages and win and your in bonuses. And award 10 points for wins and 5 for everyother position. With a 10 man playoff grid running to the end no elimination.

I'd personally like to see a return to either year end total or the 04 Chase era, but with modified modern points. Keep the stages (less the cautions), bring back lap led bonuses from the Winston Cup days, bonus points to top 10 fastest qualifying times, fastest lap, and point penalties for causing wrecks/fights or otherwise violating rules or unsporting behavior.

I have taken the liberty of going through the 2020-2022 seasons with the 2004 chase format/points system, i finished the 2020 season, chase elliott wouldve won the title with the format and harvick would not only choke it away, but also choke second in points away to logano. Ill update this when im done with 2021, and im doing the current 2024 season too. 2020: Chase Elliott 2021: Kyle Larson 2022: Ross Chastain 2023: William Byron 2024: TBD (Check back in November)

I personally love this playoff format and I know I’m probably gonna get some hate for saying this.

I think the race teams and the fans are a big reason why Nascar is the way it is. When Kenseth won 1 race in 2003 and won the title the fans complained then the chase is created. When the cars had more of a true stock appearance teams would complain that some cars had more of an advantage so Nascar started making them all the same. If teams felt that way go race in a series where everything is spec Nascar was never meant to be that way.

Knowing the champion before the last race is boring! What is the US longest race track? The seasons finale be driven there. The points difference would be calculated and would give x yards differences at the start of the last race. The race finish, decides the championship.
