Drowning for me was like a weight being dropped on you, not heavy enough to knock the wind out of you, but enough to panic. After I breathed in, it was uncomfortable, but when I was saved, it didn’t hurt, it just felt like what accidentally swallowing too much water feels like.

My cousin drowned when he was 29 in December 2018 , he was found 40 minutes later down by the river floating , I was not there but people I know told me about it ,

I got taken under by 3 separate but very large waves at the beach. Every time I was just about to break surface for air I'd get swept under by another one. A life guard made it just to the water but I was finally able to find my footing. Only downside was my biking top came completely off exposing my chest to a family friendly beach. The lifeguard told my then husband he could take it from there

I was in a car accident and smashed my hip. When the pain kicked in I was screaming until I blacked out, come to, scream, black out multiple times before I woke up 9 hours later in the recovery room. It was a pain level I never knew existed.

Actually i woke 3/4th the way into my appendix surgery. I was completely immovable. i didn't even have the power to open my eyes no matter how hard i tried. I could feel the sutures going through me as they were closing me up. It was not really painful, just an odd feeling. But one real discomfort was the pipe that was put through my mouth all the way to the stomach. My mouth felt really dried and swollen up because of that. Rest all was fine. I didn't have any trauma and all. And now I am very well. Another thing which I discovered was that doctors are not really too serious while operating. They all were gossiping. Talking about going to see a movie in the evening, and all that stuff while operating.

I'm a disabled vet and given birth 4 times naturally. The worst pain I have ever experienced was when my hamstring was severed in a fall. I literally had to wait until the kids went to school for me to put on socks because I'd involuntary scream. I was misdiagnosed and walked around with the hamstring completely pulled off the pelvic bone for 9 months until I underwent extensive reconstructive surgery. Ended my career.

^^^ Yep, but people get all bent about about "evil" drug companies and the government throws money at new laws to prevent addiction. Nobody actually cares that those drugs are some people's lifelines and the laws only make them harder for doctors to prescribe. With lupus, RA, fibro and osteoarthritis at 32, it is only a matter of time before I am needing pain management. I just messed up my wrist last week while running my tractor. So far, I have put 3 more days in running the tractor and have more to go but any pressure on my wrist comes with intense. If I go to the doc I look like I'm "drug seeking" so I'm getting by on beer and ibuprofen until the work is done and I let it rest long enough to heal, like usual.

My foster dad died of cancer. It spread to his spine and head… I think it was originally lung cancer. He felt zero pain the whole time. It was a lump (then too late to fix) that appeared that got him medical attention. It’s one thing we were all thankful for. He didn’t have pain. I miss him greatly

My cousin had trigeminal neurologea. He had it for months. There were nights he couldn’t even sleep. He was becoming lethargic and just begin to give up on life. It took a random Doctor happening to know about that tested him for it. Once they figured it out they did surgery immediately

People don't understand how badly chronic pain affects you, psychologically. Even much milder pain can cause hopelessness when you start believing it will never go away. I can bear ANY kind of pain... for A MINUTE.

Not the same as your friend but I've lived with 3 disc herniations and a fractured vertebrae since 02 . Shew. You end up getting a much higher pain tolerance or die from opiates, no in between unfortunately. Fortunately I got a higher pain tolerance

I tore my MCL in a Highschool football game. i was in a squat position extended to my left to make a block as a blind side tackle and a blitzing LB sacked our QB and both landed on the outside of my right leg. Before I hit the ground, I heard a loud pop and when I went to stand up, i could not put any weight on my leg at all. Felt no pain for the next 2 hours. however my knee was swollen to the size of a basketball to the point my equipment had to be cut off. Was on crutches for 2 months before 4 months of physio.

I have cluster headaches, and they are terrible. I had once that felt like someone took a baseball bat and swung it at my head. I was completely fine one moment, then a second later I was on the floor in pain. When I get them, I can't talk, move, or do anything. Lucky for me, they only last a few minutes of the intense pain, then will linger for an hour or so but much less severe.

We have treatment, it's illegal for the past 70 years cuz of stigma. I don't have cluster headaches, but this type of stuff makes me so, so angry. And no not tylenol, a one time boom u good for 6 months no headaches. 1950's...

@@Him_just_him mine lasts hours too. Its weird but I find myself actually hitting my head in the area(s) it hurts because for those few seconds it relieves the intensity of the pain. Altho I'm sure in the long run I'm just attributing to it and not helping it but idk what else to do. It gets so bad I actually vomit from it and of course the retching just makes the pain overbearing. Its a no win situation and I have so much empathy for those who suffer from this. Has anyone found a solution that works to reduce either the length it lasts or the level of pain??

When I dislocated my shoulder, I couldn't feel it immediately. All I felt was that I couldn't lift it and it felt numb. When the pain kicked in, boy I don't want that ever again.

I used to watch my grandfather scratch the itch on his missing lower arm. I cannot imagine. I’ve had an uncontrolled constant headache since 2007, woken up during two oral and one sinus surgery and I still would not want to deal with an itch that really could not be scratched.

My grandma is 75 and has trigeminal neuralgia. it comes and goes, usually a handful of times a year. Its scary to witness her wincing in pain when its happens while eating or trying to enjoy her newspaper. Apparently it gets more frequent over time. She is so positive though despite never knowing when its going to happen again. She's a much more resilient person than I'll ever be.

I'm 34 and have just developed it over the past year. I'm thankful that it's temporary but it's like being tazed in the face and at first it was so hard to describe! When it's flaring up something as simple as the wind can set it off. I dread having to deal with this for the rest of my life but like I said, thankful that it's quick.

Yeah I'm 30 now and have had it since I was 19 after catching shingles in my face which was bad enough until the neuralgia kicked in 2 weeks later. I have it on and off everyday and truthfully there's no escaping it.

As someone living with chronic excruciating nerve pain (due to medical malpractice), this is quite interesting. I’ve studied pain so much since 2016 (when my pain started) and most of this are 100% true.

The "phantom limb" pain, I think comes from the trauma to that body part. You have a body part all your life so your brain will take a long time to adjust to not having it anymore but also the nerve endings where the limb was amputated are what is probably wreaking havoc on the brain. The brain can't really compute such a travesty as an entire limb, through and through, is completely severed. In fact, I think that not only does it explain "phantom pain" which isn't phantom at all but resl pain in the nerve endings that were severed; but also it might explain why when you break a bone a heals well enough and you can be 100% back to using it, but later having issues with the area in question. The break on the body wasn't as complete as when you lose all thr material in and around thr bone but as it is still complete, even though it's no longer broken, it brings pain. Also, I do believe chronic pain people have smaller brains because over time, the brain is so hay-wire from all the short-circuiting the pain brings, it no longer uses all of itself and so it loses its volume, like any other muscle when you don't use it. Atrophy is what we call it. But brain atrophy is kind of a scary combination of words.

Or you become smarter bc learning achieving and accomplishment requires focus which takes focus away from pain . In the event you have a wrecked lower back like me you also get smarter on how you move and not allow others to lead you into pain because they think ahead bc they don't have pain ( yet) . Your tolerance also goes way up , or you just turn into slug you said. Choices.

@@dtcdtc8328 oh I didn't say we weren't smarter. Brain size is irrelevant when you consider the difference between species. We are the dumbest species on the planet because we don't use hardly half our brain, most of the time, whereas people in chronic pain, like me, whose brains shrink, also probably like me, actually are way smarter because of having to be way more creative about getting things done. 😉

On March 12, 2015 I was in a head-on collision while in California on Spring Break. I had to be resuscitated two times during the ambulance ride and subsequent emergency surgery in the ER to address a ruptured kidney and other internal injuries. During this process I received multiple units of blood to keep me alive. I was then placed into ICU with a Traumatic Brain Injury that left me in a coma, and had another surgery the next day to complete the removal of one kidney, it was demolished by a road sign. They also checked for additional internal injuries. My brain continued to swell and I had multiple mini-strokes so I had to undergo another surgery to remove part of my skull to prevent the swelling from ending my life. Blood was required during this surgery as well as later during another surgery to repair a broken vertebra in my back, replace my skull bone, remove it again to address an infection and then replace it. The really amazing thing is that I was lying on the asphalt until the Ambulance got there. I’m so thankful that I’m alive and I can share my story to help you! Be safe, have fun. Live.

When I drowned, it was pure bliss. I was limp & unconscious and was dragged from the water as dead weight, but my mind was also wide awake. I felt like I was ascending to heaven and I actually didn't want to be rescued! I also felt somehow as if I suddenly had a complete re-experiencing of my whole life in a flash; it's a very difficult experience to describe. The water was luke warm, didn't hurt my lungs & I think that's why I had no pain or anxiety. Where the heavenly bliss came from, I don't know.

7:00: I've had this kind of infection twice: once in 2019 and once a few months ago. I live with CWP, a condition similar to fibromyalgia in which my body randomly decides that the injuries I've had are still there even though they've healed, making the pain come back at random times. I cab guarantee that out of all the pains I've had (slipped disc, lumbago, bursitis l, sprained ankle+wrist), the teeth ones made the top 3. The pain literally sent me to the ground crying (which is not in my habits). I left my dentist a message at like 1:00 am saying I needed an appointment ASAP and if they had no place, to refer me somewhere they could do something really quick. I literally wanted to rip my face off. I had to get a root canal both times this happened.

I got anesthesia awareness when they pulled my back 16 teeth.... I couldn't fn move but I felt everything and was totally coherent... the dentist didn't believe me until I started saying all the medical terms he was saying to the students . Next time they gave me 2.5 times the normal adult male dosage

This has me worried I just had a tooth extracted that had an infection and I felt the whole thing he had to release the pressure and let the pus out first, which was very painful in itself, then he grabs the tooth and yanks it out, which I felt the whole way, and I’d like to not experience that type of pain again, but I am also going in for my wisdom teeth soon and I’m being put asleep so hopefully I stay asleep😮‍💨

7:00 I see your infected toothache pain and raise you this; I had an extremely infected tooth which caused nonstop pain. Like described in the video, i very seriously wanted to pull my own tooth out to alleviate the pain, if i had the tools i probably would have tried to, it really was that bad. But it gets worse, because despite how badly damaged my tooth was, it was savable. So the dentist pumped me full of numbing medicine. Except after 5 shots it still didnt numb the pain at all. They told me they couldnt give me any more, and thats when the dentist horrified me, and i experienced the most excruciating 1 minute of pain iv ever known. They drilled the tooth and applied the needle directly to my nerve, and i felt it all. I nearly passed out several times, and even when they injected my nerve directly, i was still in absolute agony. The pain continued for 3 days after the procedure, and the perscription strength medication i was given to help did absolutely nothing to help it Dont be like me, get it fixed before its too late. Im willing to bet the pain was worse than child birth, im just glad it only lasted a minute or so

bro your just like me but i was 8 i had to get a root canal but the dentist didnt put me on any anesthesia or anything just mumbed me raw (pause) but that was the worst pain felt i wss screaming in the chair they strapped me down blood was everywhere god bro but then afte rit was over my mouth was numb for like 7 hrs because of all the numbing medicines the dentist is in prison now for child abuse

I feel your pain literally. One time i had a terrible absess of the skin on my wrist that swelled to the size of a tennis ball in about 4 days. The hospital I went to is known for shifty care but I had no choice and at that point I thought the pain was severe and I just needed it taken care of .yeah well they brought me down to the operating room and shot me up w local anesthetic and started slicing me up before it was kicked in. I can't even describe the pain it was like my brain was on fire going from a line straight from my arm to my head. I was screaming and hyperventilating and I could hear my heart monitor going off the charts. A minute before the anesthetic started taking affect and relieving some of that pain. A minute can seem like a lifetime when someone is cutting you up especially when that flesh is already tender and infected. The worst part was after the fact the surgeon admited to me they shouldve put me to sleep for that kind of severe absess. I had to go back for a second operation because my body resisted the antibiotic they prescribed after the surgery and I was like i will literally die before I let you do that to me again unless you put me out. They put me out , gave me fentanyl , and numbed the nerves in my whole arm the second time lol. Much less painful and traumatic. Id say any day that the first op was worse than childbirth.

I thought I had heard somewhere that whether or not drowning is painful depends on what type of water you’re drowning in: sea water is painless whereas fresh water is torturous. Had anyone else heard this?

That actually makes sense. Lungs are filled with liquid and humans are intrinsically salty so this could be a way of the lungs detecting external water.

Not at all. The pain comes from liquid in the lungs. What type it is doesn’t matter.

Not feeling pain immediately in certain situations is weird, but so true. I sprained my foot & ankle, and “peeled” the skin off my palms in an accident. Treated the palms & kept working. It was almost 2hrs later when I suddenly couldn’t stand on my right foot/ankle. Went to the ER & found out then about the two sprains. Foot had swollen so much they had to cut my boot off. The hands still didn’t hurt though, just kinda itched.

I woke up during a surgery on my arm. I remember hearing the doctor sawing into my bone. Then a nurse noticed i was awake and i was given more sedation. It was kinda weird. I could just feel pressure on my arm

My mom had trigeminal neuralgia but her attacks lasted for hours. 1 year and 3 brain surgeries later and she is finally healed. It also called the suicide disease because it makes people wish they would just die.

I just had emergency surgery having my gallbladder removed, and what actually hurt the most was the gas that gets stuck in your shoulder - that made me cry from how bad it hurt!

Really? I had an appendectomy a few months ago and the gas didn’t hurt at all for me. Just the initial pain of appendicitis and then recovering from surgery. So crazy and interesting how we all perceive pain differently

I've had toothaches that felt like I was being hit in the face with a sledgehammer! The best treatment for this (short of extraction) is clove oil. You can get it at any drugstore without a prescription and it's affect is immediate and lasts for hours.

I once got some salt on an infected tooth and I felt that I could not get enough orajel on it fast enough. A week after I had tooth pulled, it happened again, and it still hurt, but not nearly as badly as before. So I don't know how salt water could help for you.

When I was a teenager, the dentist didn't believe me when I said I could still feel pain after a novacain shot. So he drilled and all that and I felt everything. When they told me to stand up and leave, I passed out. I woke up with a very worried and humbled dentist carrying me back to the chair. After that, I got two shots each time.

The pain people with asthma feel in their lungs without their inhaler is extreme. Whether your worst moments are triggered by running or by cigarette smoke, you know what I’m talking about. Every-time you try to breathe, it feels like you have sandpaper rubbing against your trachea. You start tasting a blood/ iron taste in your mouth. It feels awful, and that inhaler is a life saver. Idk why this paragraph is worded so weird I was kinda zoned out. English is my first language so I don’t even know but my asthma people know

I once fell down some stairs and broke my arm, stood right up and was confused as to why I couldn't move it (was a kid). My arm swelled with blood and that felt really good. When I broke my leg in the middle of school the whole building heard me scream. Once fell off a tree like 25 feet, I was lucky it had rained the day before and the ground was sort of soft, but I laid there like 20 minutes, unable to even scream. Another time I tore open my arm and I didn't feel the pain until I saw the wound (my arm felt wet) and saw the flesh hanging out of it, could see my bones. Then there was the time a bully kicked me in the testicles. Walked like a cartoon cowboy for three weeks. Please don't do that unless your life is in danger😥

In 2016 I was going in for a 6 way heart bypass. But because I had a bad tooth infection, I had to get all of my teeth pulled. It was too much time before I could get a dental surgeon to do it, so I had a regular dentist do it with novocane and N2O. (laughing gas). A week after my heart surgery I was sent home. Unfortunately, nobody knew I got an infection anyway and became septic. So, for the second time in 2 weeks, I got to have another 6 way bypass. This time the surgeon left my chest open an inch and a half. It took exactly 5 months before it finally closed up on its own.I had to learn how to walk, write, use utensils etc ..... all over again with 9 months of rehab and nurses coming to the house everyday. And with all of that, none of that pain compared to the pain I went through twice a day to change out the wound vacs on my left leg and chest pulling out the septic infection. And none of that compares to the pain a parent goes through when they are told their child has cancer. Seeing children suffer is the worst.

My mother fell to the floor and cried when I was diagnosed at 39 with NHL. Now 13 yrs later my dtr had to go to the ER for respiratory distress to find blood clots and a tumor. I only then understood how strong of a woman my mother was while supporting me thru my cancer. Lucky it turned out to not be either for my dtr but a bad habit of using dabs that she quickly dumped along with smoking. Thank you for posting.

I have migraines, cluster headaches and endometriosis. I had a cluster headache a few days ago, it’s painful and annoying, but it was no where near the daily pain from the endometriosis. Migraines also doesn’t really feel that painful to me, just incredible uncomfortable. I’m just so used to the extreme endo pain that nothing else really gets close. During endo pain I just throw up, faint and scream for hours, not even oxycodone or morphine helps

I remember drowning when I was around 4/5 yrs old. I don't remember pain, just calm. I recall falling in (backwards) and as I was sinking I saw myself wearing my favourite clothes and holding my favourite toys in my hands (through my own POV), even though I had none of that...almost as if my favourite things about my short memory of life was flashing quite literally before my eyes.

Stingray did it for me. I forgot to flap my feet and got hit. Well, it felt like molten glass was pumping through my foot and calf, with every heartbeat bringing a sledgehammer blow to my ankles, which were locked in a vice. Fun times. My foot swelled so much that it split open at the bottom. Within 24 hours I was back to myself again.

I've gone through a lot of pain in my life, the latest pain I've been getting is abdominal muscle spasms, kinda like the ones you get in your calve in the middle of the night, but this is my entire abdomen, it gets hard as a rock and hurts to even blow on it, it can also last for hours, the only thing I can do is lay in bed keeping my stomach stretched, it seems I usually pass out from the pain, waking up and hour or two later feeling a little better

A "dead limb" actually REALLY HURTS! Seeing pictures of black toes they normally say they don't feel it, often from frostbite. I was told for by 3 doctors in 22days that my leg pain was probably just a pulled muscle or ligament. The last doctor figured out I HAD NO PULSE IN MY LEG! It was freak blood clots that made my entire leg dead. I've had contractions, tonsils & gallbladder removal & major back issues. A dead leg definitely was the most extreme.

I have been through incidents when I got hot in the face, hard. But there was no pain for a second. I think this is an example of delayed pain. Surprisingly, sometimes, I didn't feel any pain at all (possibly due to me brushing it off like it's nothing).

i tastes like pain. not like dropping a brick on your finger, but like a sharp needle penetrating your finger from the inside out, and the the swelling just hurts even more. trust me. ive been stung twice, once deadly. the poisonous one (around 5cm in length) made my finger swell for a couple days with constant pain, and you really cant sleep. love from australia.

It's been 20 years since I was a teenager witnessing my mother suffer a hernia and that vivid memory still haunts me. My mother is very calm and never, ever complains about pain, even when you know it must hurt she never makes a deal about it...but this one day when I heard unholy blood curdling screams from her room, I dashed over and she was in bed writhing violently in agony and throwing up what looked like litres of water. I immediately called an ambulance and tried my best to reassure her but I was holding back tears myself. She had an emergency operation just hours later. After she recovered well and was told if it was delayed by just a few hours she would of died from internal bleeding. I had never been so glad to skip college that day as I was the only other person home.

I woke up feeling pain (allodynia) and realised I had a meeting to go to . I was late . I ran through wind and rain and finally made it . However the meeting was so interesting that my neuropathy seemed to vanish as I was in a happy and excited frame of mind. As the say .. it can be mind over matter in some cases .

About that self-dentistry, my grandfather was a blacksmith, and my father told me that once he pulled one of his teeth just to let blood flow... I asked him if the tooth was rotten, and he said, "no, he had a terrible headache and they believed that one should let blood flow for the headache to stop". I don't know if there is any merit in that or if it was just something they believed in at that time...

I have a huge pain tolerance. I was on methadone for opioid addiction maintenance from back injuries. I then had a open fracture femur and nothing would touch it. I had to just suffer. Now my tolerance is even higher.

Our 3 year old little boy for some reason gets water on his testicles and they swell up to 4 times the size. We always get him to the ER to make sure they don’t strangle. It’s hard to see him in pain.

A broken heart is very painful. It's hard to ignore mental pain compared to physical and I had a fair share of physical pain so I'm talking with experience. I burned my hand a while ago with cooking oil and if I had to choose this pain or the pain I had when my gf and I broke up. I'm choosing the first one no hesitation. Like the dude that got a nail through his foot, I believe your senses play a big roll in how you feel. The more aware you are through your sense the more stronger the feeling is.
