Check out Allen/Olzon "Army of Dreamers" album here: orcd.co/armydreamers
Today’s conversation is made twice the fun as we feature two veteran vocalists, Russell Allen and Annette Olson, who are legends on their own.
Russell Allen is known for his work with Symphony X and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and Annette Olson is known for her work with Nightwish. Russell and Annette recently collaborated and released their second album together, titled Army of Dreamers. Yet, it’s funny how these two fantastic artists had never met in person and never had a conversation before. And the way that they grow on each other as our tea time progresses is delightful to witness.
Also, I find it fascinating how fame affects people differently. Both Russell and Annette have toured the world. Although they’ve seen a lot in their career, they both seem to particularly love the moments at home, in peace and quiet, with their family. Russell is also creating a video game and he’s happy to have his kid test it out!
In this episode, you will hear:
Russell working as a knight at Medieval Times Dinner Theater, Improvising their performance to “save the day”, Exposing your kids to music education, Their experience collaborating on an album, How to approach recording without overtaxing your larynx, and Using technology to produce something really cool.

I have had the privilege of seeing Russel perform live with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and he is just on another level. His stage presence is as commanding as his voice! Nothing but respect for Annette; after the drama and chaos surrounding her time with Nightwish, she could have folded her tent, but she persevered and has carved out her own niche in music and metal. Both of these two should have a lot to share, so this should be a particularly fascinating discussion.

Don't know if they'll be going much into that or if it's going to be more on the music they made together, probably the latter, but as for Anette's career, following Tarja and being followed by Floor is a hard spiky corner to be stuck into!

I’m happy to see Anette finding her niche. I saw her with Nightwish 4 times, including her final show with the band. It took incredible strength to weather the storm of criticism and negativity from Tarja devotees. She’s such a nice person, a very talented vocalist, a dynamic performer, and I feel like she was exactly what the band needed at the time, both musically and personally. So much respect and gratitude to her. And of course Russell is amazing. They’re a great match both musically and in personality. I can’t wait to hear the new album. I would love if they toured together some day!

Her solo album "Shine" is one of these life-changing albums, melodic and emotional all the way through, and I specially like how the drums and guitars were recorded with some kind of Nordic Mythology thrown into the mix for good measure. At times, the drums sound like the beat of War Drums like if we are embarking on a journey to the battlefield, so fucking epic 🤣🤣🤣Strongly recommended

Oh my gosh...This was so much fun and the two hours plus just slipped away. I've liked all of your tea time interviews so far but this one was by far the most fun. And what a pair to do it with. Russell and Anette are both so amazing as performers and singers but also as down to earth real human beings. I love the thought of 'I love to sing but I don't want to be famous'. I love that Anette loves being a nurse and that Russell loves coaching kids sports...and then they also sing. And brother can they really sing. I found it fascinating that they had never actually met, even though they've done two albums together. Great job Elizabeth.

I saw Symphony X at Progfest in Atlanta after V came out, and they were amazing live. Russell sounded every bit as good, if not better than he did on the albums. Also, as someone who worked several years as a composer/sfx guy in the video game development industry, I resonate with the love for game music and design. I’ve always loved game music and composing it, because of the unbridled expression that is possible - the mixing of genres and creation of new styles. Such a wonderful interview with three amazing people! I've been a performer for almost 60 years, in many different venues, from a young Cantor (starting Hebrew at 4 years old) to many years later singing in retirement centers. Have led groups from that temple in the San Fernando Valley to leading a 420 band on the Smoke -In stage in Washington DC. So many incredible experiences. As a Qigong teacher I also know that all things (ourselves as well) are actually different frequencies of energy. We are light and sound existing within spacetime. Have studied sound healing like the 'Music of the Spheres' by Pythagoras, Manley P Hall's work, as well as modern day sound healers. My most precious moments were when a group spontaneously joined in and especially seeing older folks tapping their feet or singing along (sometimes trying to). Then informed later by the nurses that they had not moved or spoken in years. Being part of such a healing moment made me fell so blessed. It has been said, “that speech expresses our ego and personality, but singing expresses our Souls.” Thank you for being such talented and loving musicians, true beings of love and light. Much love to all y’all…. your Uncle Brother, Matthew
