Listening to her music again after reading crying in h-mart made me so emotional. The first two albums make so much sense and the song Psychopomp had me crying in public after realising that it’s her mom saying ‘it’s alright’ in Korean. Listening to jubilee again gives me more joy now because she deserves to be this happy. Paprika has been my fourth most played song of 2021.

Hey Jack, I just want to say that I appreciate your honesty in reviews. I feel like a lot of reviewers will hop on the latest trends and only like things that everyone else likes because it will get them the most followers. Okay, so, I see a lot of people posting (jokingly) self deprecating comments comparing themselves to Jack when it comes to reading. But please keep in mind that Jack literally *reads for a living* . This is his *job* . Please don't compare yourself to him, or at least not a serious way that'll make you feel bad about yourself! Reading is supposed to be fun and relaxing (in a way... speaking as someone who loves dark and depressive dystopian novels 😂). Do it at your own pace, read what you want, don't compare yourself to others ❤️
@Jenbebookish
@Jenbebookish 2 жыл бұрын
It’s not about not reading what I want or comparing myself to others and feeling badly about myself because I don’t read as much as somebody else. It’s really just about having such a massive TBR & so many books that I am dying to read, that even reading 125-150 books a year which is my average, isn’t anywhere close to enough. When my TBR is 1500 books long, even 200 books a year would hardly make a dent. It’s not that we are insecure about our reading when we compare ourselves, it’s just that we want to read more & are jealous of other people that can read faster/have more reading time.

I think one thing Jack missed with Crying in H-Mart is the question of what it means to be a part of a culture. When Zauner's mother dies, she feels like she's lost her connection to being Korean, and it's something, through food, that she tries to claim for herself. That's something I love about the book so much

Crying in H Mart rings true for a lot of Asian kids. I'm South Asian and similarly my mum has never told me she loves me nor did her mum tell her. But we always showed it to each other through food. If she ever shouted at me, made me cry, or if I was having a bad day in general, she would always cook me my favourite dish. It was our way of connecting and her telling me that she cares deeply for me. My nan passed away earlier this year and cooking her dishes is genuinely the only way I've been able to deal with that grief. My love language is literally acts of service, and this is literally why.

Also remember that reading is Jack’s job. The more you read the easier reading gets for your brain (less exhausting, easier to focus, easier to process) and if you were to read like it was your full time job then you would eventually get to the place where you could read 100+ books a year. For the average person, reading is a hobby and something we do because we love stories, it’s not a competition. We are here for a good time.

Hi, Jack. I just want to let you know that you have greatly influenced my interest in books. I only started my reading journey (for real) last month, and here I am, hoarding books from my mom's office storage and ordering more online. I also joined Goodreads. By the way, you're the first person I followed there. ;) Please keep inspiring people to love reading as much as you did for me. ❤ from the Philippines

You’re so right about The Spanish Love Deception, I’m listening to the audiobook right now and I think I may have to DNF it. I feel like the characters are so unappealing, so much so that I honestly don’t care if they end up together (even though we all know they will). I’m kind of annoyed that this book was hyped so much. I feel like I’ve been lied by the booktok community.

I HATED Earthlings. I finished it and I cried and then I threw it out. I’m not kidding. I walked into a bookstore thinking ‘hey, I want a cute short book’ I see a book called Earthlings! How cute! There’s a stuffed hedgehog on the cover! It’s about a little girl who thinks she’s an alien! HOW CUTE. Ha fucking ha I couldn’t handle it. It was like a ‘commentary’ but it just made me feel disgusting. Yeah idk I just really hated it. I cried, I screamed, I shat, I threw up. I disagree with u!

So glad you read a book by akutagawa! Just fyi, if you wanna get into anime, there's one called Bungou (literary) Stray dogs, Basic premise, 3 organizations in Yokohoma (Speciail Abilities Division - gov't, Armed Detective Agency - grey organization, and Port Mafia - dark organization) which consist of individuals who have special abilities. Twist is that each character with an ability is named after a famous author and their ability is related to a book or literary work by said author. Its one of the reasons I started reading japanese literature

Cain’s Jawbone is truly a painful experience. I’ve gotten through 21 pages and every page has at least 4+ literary/historical references that just seem to be fully random. At first I was bought it to solve. Now I just want to finish reading it and finding these references 😭 I even have a whole word document with links to all of the literary references I’ve found. The big question for me though is whether solving this puzzle is worth it. It feels so not worth it. Very much not worth it…
