I've never really understood the saying 'Don't judge a book by its cover.' That's literally what cover designs are for.
@talkofthestage6053
@talkofthestage6053 2 жыл бұрын
The saying was coined or at least is best attributed to Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights Movement when black people were fighting racial segregation and discrimination in the US. Dr King’s plea to the racist white folk was to judge a person by the content of their character and not to judge a book by its cover (I.e. not judge a person by their skin colour). I don’t think this saying was ever seriously intended to apply to actual books in the way that Jack has in this light-hearted and comedic video.

Have you tried listening to audiobooks and reading something you really wanted to try for a while at the same time? I feel like when my attention wanders about, listening to the audiobook while also reading the book myself kinda helps. It helps to set up an ambiance that is less likely to make one want to watch/listen to something else. You can also try breaking the slump by rereading something you've really enjoyed in the past or reading somewhere with no access to the internet :D

"This is How you Lose The Time War" definitely has a really great second act, but for me I also enjoyed the first half! The letters were witty and some of the settings were so cool, like an ancient bone temple, a dying plant, and an abandoned hospital in the middle of the woods. If you are a fan of sci-fi I think these settings make the first half more appealing! It also contains cute pop-culture references. This book made me laugh and cry, I highly recommend especially if you enjoy time travel/romance/poetry! My favorite quote from the book: "Flowers grow far away on a planet they'll call Cephalus, and these flowers bloom once a century, when the living star and its black-hole binary enter conjunction. I want to fix you a bouquet of them, gathered across eight hundred thousand years, so you can draw our whole engagement in a single breath, all the ages we've shaped together."

I love how extensively you think about these book covers and the books themselves- it’s like you went to college for it /s Also I think you should do a video where you read/reread children’s/middle grade books, I’d love for you to give your insight on them!

Jack you've inspired me to read so much more that I just finished 8 books in 3 days and started the 9th. This is the most I've ever read in so little time. I read Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982, We were liars, They both die at the end AND One of us is lying just like you recommended. They were great reads but my favourites are definitely Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 and One of us is lying.

Love in Colour is absolutely brilliant, it was my first 5 star read of 2022 and I’m still thinking about it; how amazing was the writing?! 😭 Funnily enough I put it off because I felt like I wanted to read it because of the pretty cover… ended up loving the content more than the cover!

Hi jack! Something I kind of noticed like when you were talking about the second book is that sometimes you show a book but dont read the title out loud. I would appreciate it if you read them out loud more often as sometimes I'm not always looking while listening and it's probably helpful for people hard of sight as well!

“Things have gotten worse since we last spoke“ was my first book of 2022 and it was certainly something to start off a year with. I also read it in one sitting and was just sat staring at a wall for a while afterwards. A 10/10 for me tbh

The summary of a couple of these books reminds me of The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. It has a start where you have no idea what’s going on and then lots of twists and turns and in the end you only get enough info to solve near the end. BUT it might be worth the reread. Would love your thoughts if you’ve read it.
