The newest video in my editor reacts to series. This week I'm watching and reacting to Game of Thrones for the first time.
Tyrion arrives at King's Landing to take his father's place as Hand of the King. Stannis Baratheon plans to take the Iron Throne for his own. Robb tries to decide his next move in the war. The Night's Watch arrive at the house of Craster.
Nine noble families fight for control over the lands of Westeros, while an ancient enemy returns after being dormant for millennia.
Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for HBO. It is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin, the first of which is A Game of Thrones. The show premiered on HBO in the United States on April 17, 2011, and concluded on May 19, 2019, with 73 episodes broadcast over eight seasons.
Set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, Game of Thrones has a large ensemble cast and follows several story arcs throughout the course of the show. The first major arc concerns the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros through a web of political conflicts among the noble families either vying to claim the throne or fighting for independence from whoever sits on it. The second focuses on the last descendant of the realm's deposed ruling dynasty, who has been exiled to Essos and is plotting to return and reclaim the throne. The third follows the Night's Watch, a military order defending the realm against threats from beyond Westeros' northern border.
Game of Thrones attracted a record viewership on HBO and has a broad, active, and international fan base. Critics have praised the series for its acting, complex characters, story, scope, and production values, although its frequent use of nudity and violence (including sexual violence) generated controversy. The final season received significant criticism for its reduced length and creative decisions, with many considering it a disappointing conclusion. The series received 59 Primetime Emmy Awards, the most by a drama series, including Outstanding Drama Series in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019. Its other awards and nominations include three Hugo Awards for Best Dramatic Presentation, a Peabody Award, and five nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series - Drama.

Lol, Lexi has a lot of spice! I sometimes wonder if Jack Gleeson would not have had to step away from on screen acting if he hadn't done so well with this role....I thinkbthe first move I remember seeing him in was Batman Begins. He was the kid on the balcony interacting with Batman and in another scene getting a hand to the face from a jerk cop. He did well shedding his accent during those scenes.

I'd say Robert is more Joffrey's father; he was the influence on Joffrey and very similar in some ways. His immaturity, his insistence on his own way no matter how detrimental to the realm. And Joffrey wanted Robert's approval, not Jaime's. Jaime is nothing to him.
@Talisguy
@Talisguy Ай бұрын
Joffrey is all of Robert and Cersei's worst traits with none of their strengths - he got his pettiness, narcissism and giant ego from his mother and his violence, martial obsession and abusive tendencies towards Sansa from Robert. (He got his misogyny from both of them.) He's their son, alright. But he didn't pick up Robert's bravery, generosity, loyalty to his friends or military mind, or his mother's foresight (and you know you've messed up when Cersei fucking Lannister looks like a brilliant long-term planner compared to you) or genuine protectiveness towards her family.

Daenerys has a great uncle at the Wall (a great great uncle in the books but the show left out a generation in the family description he gives Jon Snow in S1E09). He wouldn't know how to feed dragons, though. He's not old enough to have known any.

Well done catching the lighting up of the stone in Melisandre's necklace. And no, she's not a Targaryen. She's a priestess of the fire god R'llor, the Lord of Light. She's from very, very far away, in the far east of the continent of Essos (the continent Dany is on right now, but on the opposite side of it) in a city called Asshai.

I was sad when Buffy and Angel was over but I love that you're now doing two of my other all time favorite shows: GoT and Lost and you're not only funny but very smart for keeping a list for the GoT as there are many and it can be a very convoluted show at times. Also, I have a request that when you're finished with these you cover two other favorites: True Blood and Stranger Things, if you would :-).

Relationships between cousins aren't considered incest in Westerosi society. It's considered a bit weird, but not illegal. Tywin's wife was his cousin. Cersei and Jaime got the incest tendencies from him lmao. Also while Robert says that incest was the reason Aerys was "mad", that's not quite accurate. At least not in the books. Aerys' "madness" could more accurately be called a trauma response. He was captured and tortured by rebels until he was saved by Barristan Selmy. He wasn't the "Mad King" before then.
@Brandyalla
@Brandyalla Ай бұрын
There's also the "coin flip" that happens in the Targareyan line. Madness runs in their blood, and trauma and incest weren't Aerys' only excuses.

Marriages between cousins is not necessarily considered incest even in some modern societies. The legality of such a relationship varies among countries and between states within the US. In fact, I know of a number of such couples. The Targaryens, though, made a habit of it, which exacerbated the chances that something would go horribly wrong.

Who is worse, Joffrey or the Mad King? I think we will find out, or have already heard (from Ser Jaime, who was a member of the Aeris's Kingsguard, and a bit from Ser Jorah), some of what the Mad King was like. Lord Eddard's father and brother burned alive, for one thing. Joffrey has his path set out for him if he wants to be as bad as the Mad King, but though he's taken a couple of steps, he hasn't got that far yet. I repeat, yet.

Cersei is actually the one who orders the killing of the bastards in the books... Idk why they changed it, probably just to make Joffrey more "hate-able".. idk... I think the writers enjoyed how much the audience hated Joffrey in s1, and dialed it up to 11 in s2... sometimes it works, other times its kinda annoying and gratuitous. Cersei is the one making these types of political calculations, Joffrey is more of a cruel, petulant, spoiled brat

When I said that Cersei could have stopped Ned's execution, some people argued that the guards and Ser Ilyn wouldn't listen to her. I present as a counter-argument the "power is power" scene. Those guards were totally willing to kill the Master of Coin just because Cersei felt like making a point. She could have at least _tried_ to directly call off the execution. She's much more like Joffrey than she might initially seem, she's just better at hiding it - she's petty, inept at wielding power, lacking in foresight and a monstrous narcissist. She's smarter and more self-aware than Joffrey, but proximity to her idiotic sadistic fuckup of a son-nephew and the fact that she's at least pretty effective at scheming her way _to_ power (even if she's awful at using it for anything practical) make her look a lot more capable than she actually is.
@Katerine459
@Katerine459 Ай бұрын
King is above Queen Regent. Queen Regent is above Master of Coin. Just because she was able to order her guards to seize LF for a moment, doesn't mean she has any power to directly counteract the King. It's true what you said in the third paragraph, but I disagree that she could have stopped the execution after Joffrey ordered it.
@menachemsalomon
@menachemsalomon Ай бұрын
@@Katerine459 If Joffrey would have ordered the execution in private or in council, Cersei might have been able to countermand it, or at least discourage the idea enough for Joffrey to rescind the order. But not in public, in full view of the crowd, with a direct order to Ser Ilyn. Or possibly, she could have, but weighing the options, felt that countermanding the king in public, when there is a question on his qualifications and heredity, would undermine him entirely. Rather dangerous when Stannis, Renly, and Robb are also making plays at the throne.

Robert got children outside his house Baratheon; the Targaryens should have made the same more often, then Dani would have more living relatives. The mad king's son was married to a princess from Dorne. So at least he was not furthering the incest.

Continuing my book facts tour!: The Tourney on Joffrey's name day is said to be an attempt at being as grand or grander than the Tourney for the Hand, but because of the war, there are very few actual men of note. Sandor Clegane calls the assembled men "gnats"instead of knights. Don't look down too hard on Ser Dontos Hollard. He had one of the saddest backstories of any ASOIAF character(not that the show paid it any mind). King Aerys "the Mad"(before he became the Mad King)was called to the castle of Lord Darklyn, a minor House of the Crownlands whose port town was losing revenue and wanted to have similar rights to another kingdom. Tywin Lannister told Aerys not to go, but Aerys had gone to the point where Tywin telling him "no"meant that he would do the opposite. When he was in the castle, the Darklyn's arrested him and imprisoned him, keeping him hostage for a year while Tywin besieged the town. Lord Darklyn expected Tywin would eventually give better terms, but failed to understand who Tywin was. The king was eventually rescued by Ser Barristan Selmy, who killed Lord Darklyn's champion, Ser Symon Hollard and avenged a brother of the kingsguard who was killed defending Aerys. Aerys ordered everyone with even a bit of Darklyn or Hollard blood killed(though the worst fate went to Darklyn's mistress, who apparently gave him the idea)and Dontos was spared being killed as he was only an infant(and Barristan asked King Aerys to spare him, which Aerys could not refuse after Selmy saved his life.) Dontos(who will return) had a bigger role in the book during book 2. Sadly, it got cut down. Dany is only able to help her dragons survive because she remembers the lessons Viserys taught her about dragons when they were children, including that only dragons and humans eat cooked meat. Because they made her say he didn't know anything, they take away a lot of nuance of the relationship(they also removed how she named her three dragons. The black dragon is Drogon(named after her husband). The green is Rhaegal(her eldest brother)and the white is Viserion(named for her brother, who she says will have the strength Viserys didn't.) Stannis Baratheon is one of my favourite characters. Not so the show runners, who didn't like him or understand him. While he's serious, he is, despite all that, a really good man. He is not a religious zealot or anything and they take away part of his reasoning. He saw his parents ship destroyed and sink within view of home during a storm, with his mother and father drowned. He swore that since the Seven would be so cruel, he would give them no part of his worship. Another reasoning for his choice of the red god R'hllor is a story he tells Davos. In the story, he found and raised a goshawk he found injured and nursed it to health. However much it would sit on his shoulder and flit about, it would never soar. He named it Proudwing, but Robert taunted him and called it Weakwing. Eventually, he was convinced to choose another bird and Stannis abandoned the hawk and chose another, as he realized he was making a fool of himself with Proudwing. He states that he chose a *red* hawk when it came to his god. Maester Cressen gets more characterization in the book, having the whole prologue chapter from his POV. In it, he talks about how Stannis was his favourite of the three brothers, the one he thought of like his son and the one who needed him the most of the three. Cressen initially nearly convinces Stannis to make terms to join with Robb Stark, only for Stannis's zealot wife to convince him otherwise. Melisandre also humiliates Cressen and Cressen, feeling that killing her is the only way to save Stannis, drinks the poison that he shares with Melisandre. While she survives, Cressen dies. Later, Stannis admits that he never wanted Cressen dead and his not summoning Cressen to a meeting was him trying to give the old man a peaceful retirement, as he had served for so long and was growing older. Lightbringer, Stannis's sword in the books CONSTANTLY glows as if aflame. However, the show omits this awesome detail because the show runners are lazy. Same goes for Robb's crown of bronze and iron with the longsword shaped points and Stannis's red gold crown with the flame points. Melisandre is from Asshai, which is the location farthest east on the world map. There is very little information about the location, only that there are black stone buildings, people from here are supposedly magically inclined and there are no children in Asshai. The direwolves are huge now, but sadly, now we see them a lot less as a result. Don't expect a lot of the dragons either. Cersei is the one who begins the Baratheon child purge in the books, not out of fear of their threatening her sons legitimacy, but out of sheer hatred of her dead husband. There is talk of a few more, including a pair of twins from Robert visiting Lannisport(which Cersei have murdered and has their mother sold to a slaver). Mya Stone(Robert's oldest)is safe in the Eyrie(she serves the Arryn's), while Edric Storm, one of Roberts only acknowledged bastards(since his mother was highborn)was safe in Storm's End, the Baratheon stronghold(Mya and Edric are both cut out of the show, to our great regret). The girl who mothered Barra also dies trying to defend her daughter as well in the book. Alright, next episode is "Garden of Bones", which is one of the most uncomfortable episodes for me. You know why....

Which is why Robert Baratheon's order to kill Daenerys was on target. Or at least in line with that reasoning. But obviously Eddard Stark didn't hold of that. He wanted to leave Daenerys alive, look up Gendry and Robert's other natural-born children, and is obviously raising a natural-born son in his own home almost as if he were a true-born son.
