When Bruce Willis was cast in this movie, nobody believed it would work because he was known as a comedian and comedic actor. At the time, he was known from the tv show, "Moonlighting", a romantic comedy show. People were accustomed to action movies with larger, more muscular people, like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallone. This movie made Willis a big movie star.

I've never heard of getting phone books that often. We'd get them once a year. You'd get the 'white pages' with home numbers, and 'yellow pages' with numbers for businesses.

Lethal Weapon is a Christmas movie, too! It's right up there with Die Hard! Good stuff guys. Gas was 75 cents per gallon in California when this was made.

Movie magic making moment: when Alan Rickman was going to do his death dive scene it became known that he was afraid if heights so he could not stand to do more than one take as it required Rickman to make a practical stunt fall himself. Director McTiernan did not tell him but he was dropped earlier than he was supposed to, so the reaction you saw of Hans Gruber falling to his death was as genuine as could be.

You mentioned that there are a lot of action heroes named John. That is true! The names John and Jack are the most-used names for male leads, espeically in action movies. Hollywood must think the names sound tough but also relatable because of how common those names are in much of the world, especially U.S., Canada and U.K.

This movie played on every local, network, television station in the country around christmas time.... for decades. When all of the familys are together and half of them don't want to talk or catch up, many of us would hide in the basement watching TV. Cousins, Uncles and brothers would at some point make there way to the TV set where this movie was playing. Also, All three Star Wars movies would play back to back all day on Christmas as well as "A Christmas Story" for 24 hours straight. In between my brother and I would also watch "Leathal Weapon" which is also a Christmas movie. You guys are awesome. Keep it up. Don't forget Die Hard 2 and 3!

Fun fact: The novel upon which this film was based, 'Nothing Lasts Forever', was actually a sequel to the novel 'The Detective'. Frank Sinatra played the lead in the film version of 'The Detective' in 1968 and the studio were contractually obligated to first offer the lead in Die Hard to Frank Sinatra, which they did. Fortunately Frank Sinatra determined that he was too old for the part, so turned it down, as they were hoping he would. Imagine he'd have accepted, though. How different a film would it have been?

In order to save production costs the 20th Century Fox Plaza building at Century City, which was under construction at the time, doubled for the fictional Nakatomi building in the movie. Fox wouldn't have to lease an empty building or construct many sets as the studio fortuitously already had one ready to go. They could damage parts of the building with some pyrotechnic charges and smoke bombs and breakaway glass windows because they were still fixing it up anyway. Insurance would cover the costs of cleaning things up. Closeups of the roof and helicopter exploding were done with very large scale miniatures and real explosives by Boss Film Effects.

Sometime the holidays can be tough…..let me clarify….sometimes spending time with family is tough….and you just need a break, with other family or friends or friends that don’t have family…..on Christmas nothing is open except a movie cinema. Having gone out on the Christmas this was out….great distraction…..it made you feel like your family issues weren’t so bad lol. My sister took me to see it on bad Christmas, and I’m thankful to this day. Yippee kiy yah….

The phone books were sent out once a year. There was a yellow pages for business and white pages which showed public phone numbers and business except the business was only one line whereas in the yellow pages the business could buy a larger ad. they would deliver one of each to each of their customers. you could pay extra to have an unlisted number.

I like how so many people argue if something is a christmas movie because yes christmas is supposed to be a happy joyful time... But it doesnt matter if something is a horror movie or an action film if its based around christmas then its a christmas movie. just because it might not be something you could watch with your kids doesnt remove it from that category. many people watch movies like these as part of their holiday tradition just like some people watch cheerful movies instead

I once got paid a heck of a lot of money for working on Christmas eve. It was quite a long job. An 11 hour round trip setting off from a town called Burnley in Northwest England and picking up 50 boxes from Portsmouth on the south cost of the UK and then dropping them off in Leeds which is 50 miles East of where I started from. And I had to be there before 5pm. But sooooo much money was being offered I couldn't say no. It paid for our entire family to have a decent celebration and more expensive presents.

The term 'Die Hard' is said of something that just won't die or break... (Like those old refrigerators, lol... You could keep those things for 50+ years and it still worked.) Something tough, rugged, durable.

The Christmas party is after business hours when the building is closed to the public and would normally be empty, so there are only a couple of guards who are basically functioning as nightwatchmen. That skeleton crew security, and the fact that only executives would be at the party (meaning not too many hostages for Hans and his crew to control yet enough hostages that you can kill some to make your point and enough to make make any any attempt at hostage rescue difficult yet) are a couple of big reasons the heist was planned for Christmas Eve.

Die Hard is definitely a Christmas movie. It's also an action movie. There are not mutually exclusive categories. Christmas is a time for family, and John McClane's entire reason for being in LA is to reconcile with his estranged wife. And it wasn't off to a great start. Within 5 minutes they were fighting again. Until Hans and his gang showed up, providing a little Christmas miracle for them to more properly reconcile. Also, there is tons of Christmas iconography and music throughout the film, including Ode to Joy pretty much being the bad guy's theme music.

If you wanna see what Die Hard would've been if it were a 100% Christmas movie, watch Violent Night. It's a Die Hard parody with Santa as the main character. It's a great mix of action, comedy, and actually has some heart. All the things we love about Die Hard.

1:55 I don't remember phone books coming every month. I think it was once a year, or if you recently moved into a new place. I think you can still request them, but most people just use the internet to find numbers now. There was one for residential numbers and one for businesses.

The White Pages were personal names, addresses, and phone numbers, including companies (if you knew the name). The Yellow Pages was for businesses, and they would pay to have a listing and / or an ad in that book. Both books were published annually in my city, and they were free for all telephone customers. This was back when there was just one telephone company in the US: Bell Telephone. After the US law courts broke the company up (1984), and as phone technology started to change from land lines toward mobile phones, the White and Yellow Pages were slowly changed; published every two years, or were just for a smaller area around your house instead of being for the whole city. Eventually they went away, or mostly went away, being done by different private companies. Now you can find websites named White Pages and Yellow Pages.

Oh How Funny, Your english is so good I honestly thought you both lived here in the USA. We have a tradition of watching great movies at Christmas time they don't have to have anything to do with Christmas, they are just movies that are blockbusters (super great money makers) and Television in the 80's started airing these great movies in our homes so people would gather around after eating on Thanksgiving or on Christmas or Easter and watch it as a family. Then it becomes a tradition to watch that same movie ea year. A silly tradition but fun.

There is a 'Bollywood' film from 1995 titled 'Baazi' that borrows heavily from Die Hard and other Hollywood blockbusters such as Patriot Games (1992), Terminator 2 (1991) and even 9 1/2 Weeks (1986). The opening is borrowed from Patriot Games, and the climax is borrowed from this film Die Hard involving a hostage crisis atop an office building.

You 2 are awesome !!! This movie is a favorite of mine too. Anyway FYI, phone books were local to a city or rural county, and were only updated once a year. We had 2 types of phone books, 1 for residential citizens (White Pages) and 1 for businesses (Yellow Pages), so you'd use/pick ⛏the appropriate book, depending on what type of number you needed to find. Also, you mentioned that "you could chose to have your number removed", but the process was a little different than that. In fact, for Residential (White Pages) customers, you had to pay an extra fee to get an "unlisted number" (i.e. a number that is NEVER put in the book) if you wanted to remain anonymous, otherwise, your name was automatically listed in the White Pages telephone book. However, it worked the opposite way for businesses. If you WANTED to be listed, you had to pay a fee for that "service".

It's not Christmas till Hans falls from the Nakatomi Tower. lol!!! You must check out "A Christmas Story", an absolute classic that will have you laughing your asses off!!

Phone books were/are updated yearly. They are the product of whatever local phone company services your area. And they were listings of physical lines, not cell phones. A typical American house has a phone line ran to it and a single phone number associated with that line. And then as time went on, people would get extra phone lines for their children. Current versions of local phone books are mostly just ads for local businesses as many people have canceled their physical phone number as it is not needed due to cell phones becoming the standard. I would like to recommend the following Die Hard movies "Die Harder" as well. It actually ups the action actually, and so does the following Die Hard 2, with a Vengeance movie with Samuel Jackson. A lot of people got named after an actor named john wayne who played a cowboy in the movies in America. The rolex watch was essentially an expensive business watch, as sign of promotion in a corporation.

Like Onecoldmonkey said we'd get them once a year. A yellow pages for businesses and white pages were the public numbers. The only thing I'll add is that they were based on each city and each city has a county within cities. So you could get another book. Later, companies realized they could make more money on coupons and advertising in them(like pizza delivery, plumbers,etc). So they'd print secondary versions. Most people would just throw them away, but rip out the coupons out of the back. :P

This is the one that made Bruce Willis a movie star (he was already famous for comedy from tv). Die Hard broke the action movie mold by having a "normal guy" as the star... FYI RE: "Why new phone books every month?" If you're in a big city the phone book would only be for part of it (West Side, East Side, North Side, etc). Plus they can charge more from businesses by putting their names first in the list or big ads in the yellow pages. It used to be a huge money maker for the phone companies.

Our phone numbers aren't really private, even today. They originated similarly to mail addresses and are publicly available information. So you didn't and don't have any privacy over whether others could find out what your phone number was. But neither did anyone else. All privacy existed through anonymity and the impracticality of people storing/remembering phone numbers. We would have our phone numbers printed on our own telephones and often keep a list of frequently called numbers-family, work phones, school, friends-either next to or near our main phones, or in a personal phone/address book, and we would have to look up any other numbers we didn't remember in the white pages (individuals with landlines in their residences) or yellow pages (commercial phone numbers). I want to say the 1990s but perhaps earlier, our phone companies began having features like Last Call Return, usable here and referred to as *69, which would callback the last person who called your phone.
