Before listening to these podcasts I would search minimalist videos on google/youtube, and what I've watched were basically room tours/videos about the aesthetic of minimalism, and every time these videos were on the "Up next" auto play playlist, I'd play a different video because I thought this was just going to be a podcast of 2 guys talking about how to clean your room, but it's much more than what I expected. One day I let the podcast 001 play and wow, these videos are really helpful and actually explain what minimalism truly is, and not just the aesthetic on it; As said in this podcast, it's not just about owning less. Thank you for these podcasts and changing my mind set on how minimalism is a lifestyle and not a room's decorations or a closet of whites and blacks, then going out and being addicted to our phones, or sitting at our computers, never actually devoting time to actual people or completing projects/finishing homework/doing your best at work.

as a person who has an organizational disorder I started by gathering all like items into one location in my home so all pens were located in one place (the kitchen in a jar) all scissors in one location (a drawer in the kitchen)....what I found was I had 20 scissors 5 dozen pens....then I started eliminating...if anyone is overwhelmed with this process of minimalizing and has organizational issues like me this might be a good place to start. Uncluttering your life is a challenge for anyone especially the organizationally challenged like me.

Listening to you helped me let go of things in my life that really don't have value. I used to have a notebook, a sketchbook, a diary, another diary when I thought I lost the first one and an organizer. Oh, I also had like a bigger notebook for my writing. I threw them all away except for my sketchbook and used it for the purpose of all the others I let go of. Now I'm writing more often, looking at my calendar more often and scribbling more often. Minimalism helped me refocus my life even with this little aspect of having a writing space. Funny how having just one notebook now makes me a feel happier and more fulfilled than before. Thank you for inspiring me!

At the moment I have similar problem. I was collecting notebooks. Dreaming that one day I'll use them as I have all those ideas I wanna put on paper. But on the end I don't use them as I think that I need "special thought/purpose" for them becouse they're too pretty xD or if I use them I forget about ideas as they're in too many places. Or I use pieces of paper to save notebooks for "better time", haha. So thank you for you comment. Recently I had this shy idea to maybe get red of them but you gave me the courage :)

I was listening to this podcast passively while de-cluttering my house. My head perked up at the quote: _"The more we consume, the less we create."_ COULD NOT AGREE MORE. There are a lot of people in my life who only consume and never create something, nothing left of them after they die. When I became aware of this, it changed my life and I started making things, art, anything. It makes me happy to be reminded of that through this podcast. Cheers!

Facebook locking out of my account because of a name issue hurt at first, but it turned into a blessing in my life. I start turning into a minimalist without realizing I was becoming one. I don't think I would face my frustration of having way too much stuff if I was still distracted by Facebook taking up many hours of my time until I am too tired to do anything else much. I don't care if they want to take my account hostage because I found a new found freedom without Facebook!

I like the point about artists and their supplies. I am ballroom dancer and need a few different things that i dont wear everyday or even every month.. but i dont get rid of it because it is part of my job. So i have different shoes for different occasions, and a dress for competitions and a dress for shows etc.. If I were to sell them , i would have to buy a new one next time i have a performance, so it would be really expensive and time consuming! I think having the things you need to do your job or your studies isnt clutter.. Its clutter when its no longer adding value to your life or you no longer have a need for it. it doesnt make you less of a minimalist to have a job that requires supplies.

I was becoming a minimalist without realizing I was becoming one until months later I looked at Minimalism online, including the TEDx talk, and discovered I was one. Among the Minimalists on KZfaq, they only keep what they need, use and inspired by, which I can relate to as a guideline to what to keep. The guideline to what to throw away was anything that I don't need, use and/ or want. I like that you guys add to it the principles behind why I am doing what I am doing...to live deliberate, which I translate to living a more "meaningful" life. Keep up the good work!

I'm currently trying out different systems to keep my art supplies in check as well, and definitely relate to Evan about having many passions. Its very common for artistic people to have many expressive outlets and pursuits so it becomes almost too easy to accumulate supplies or spread ourselves way too thin with a lot of projects. It's definitely an ongoing process and requires continuous effort for artists to stay minimal. Thank you for addressing those questions!

I just found these guys today, but I think I have been moving slowly towards this over the years. Living without pets has been wonderful for me, but people can not comprehend it. Pets require a lot of time and money and take that away from people, just how I feel, but if you love having pets and it adds to your life more power to you. Last year losing the spouse was the best most freeing thing that happened to me, lol, and getting rid of his shit has been amazing!

I have started with my closet and I am loving getting rid of things. I visit my family in Mexico 1 o 2 times per year, if you have family outside of the US, you know how they love American clothes even if it's second hand. Every year I try to buy at least 1 thing for each cousin and make sure everyone gets a gift, spending more money than I should. This year I have I have gifts for everyone from my closet and have only spend $100 dollars including a suitcase, when normally I would spend from $300 - $600 every trip. My cousins always say to bring them shoes and clothes I don't use anymore and guess what I have them, my just in case I need them one day items. Wish me luck in my minimalist journey.

"How do you apply minimalism to technology?" I got rid of a TV, desktop computer, few game consoles, numerous CDs, DVDs, and physical games, tons of cables, basically the whole entertainment center and replaced it all with a gaming laptop. I get all my content digitally now, primarily through Netflix, Steam, Reddit, and KZfaq. I can learn, read, listen, play, record, share, watch, and design all with a laptop. The only thing I've considered getting is a projector to watching movies, but I've been considering that for 5 years now and I haven't gotten one yet, maybe next year; tech always gets cheaper. TL;DR Minimized all tech, got a gaming laptop
@ChazEvansdale
@ChazEvansdale 8 жыл бұрын
***** Probably about the same amount, but it's more enjoyable and intentional than before. I minimized non-enjoyable activities, so no more mindlessly watching TV or scrolling through the Facebook wall, etc. But I still use the laptop a lot, but for things I enjoy or enhance my hobbies, like music and guitar tabs, making floor plan designs, cheaper games through Steam, and learning with TED talks, KZfaq, and Reddit. . You can minimizing more than possessions. To do that figure out your top 5 priorities. I suggest writing them down. Then spend your time, energy, money, thoughts and space on those things. Which means you might want to get rid of non-supportive friends, jobs you don't like, and learn to say "No" to good things so you can focus on better ones that are more important to you.
@ChazEvansdale
@ChazEvansdale 8 жыл бұрын
+Scottosphere i'm just starting a blog, so eventually I can link that. For now I'll give you an example of my priorities to help you get started. God/Helping people, Be creative, Stay Active, Seek Enjoyment, Live simply, Continual Learning. Okay, so I have 6 or 7 priorities. Then under each there are 1-3 major focuses Reading, Prayer, Vocation, Service, Design, Guitar, Disc Golf, Walking, Steam, TED, Reddit, KZfaq, Minimalism, Sustainability. So I have 14 major outlets I try to spend most my life on. Balancing these things is important, otherwise I'm playing Steam games all day. I make sure my work meaningful, such as teaching English to refugees and rebuilding Katrina damaged houses in New Orleans. I have hobbies that take limited supplies, so I do most my hobbies, entertainment, and activities with only a gaming laptop, nice shoes, a few discs, and a guitar. Think what's important to you, be it, family, running, reading, music, gardening, self sufficiency, science, or something else. Knowing these things will only help you decide if what you're currently doing is actually matching what you want to be doing. If you find out that you're already doing what is important, then that's awesome keep it up and learn how to do them even better. But if you find out you're not following your priorities, then you have to decide what to change, what to minimize, what to add, and then you'll live a happier more fulfilling life. Resources I use or have used in my 7 years of minimalism: Leo Babauta, he's mentioned by the Minimalist on Podcast 003. If he can do minimalism with 6 kids, then anyone can. He's got mnmlist.com, which I've read every post of, and currently runs Zen Habits, but I've only read a few posts. Also he has free pdf/ebooks called Focus, Little Book of Contentment, Little Book of Mindfulness, The One Skill, The Simple Guide to a Minimalist Life, and Zen to Done. I've read all these books, they're short and to the point, but packed with info to help you reflect on life and improve it. Just google search to find links to the books. I love love love Kirsten Dirksen's youtube channel, but that's more about simple living in tiny houses, so it may not fit your idea of minimalism. Reddit: Subscribe to your top 5 priorities (avoid everything else, Reddit can take over if you let it). We'd love to have you over at reddit.com/r/minimalism and reddit.com/r/simpleliving

Yeah, that's basically how I'm writing my blog, my story and some tips along the way. If that helps people great, if not, then there are tons of other blogs and resources out there. I don't want to just copy/paste the same things they share. I could however have a links section so all the resources I like, including Leo Babauta, Kirsten Dirksen, Konmari, The Minimalist, etc. Though I haven't use it Konmari is a twist on what I did, just more directed on how to do it. I couldn't tell you exactly how I got to my 50 piece wardrobe (including shoes, hats, belts and other accessories), but I know it was a process. All my suggestions were part of a process that included about a year for the first big purge and a continued effort over the past 6-7 years that will continue all my life. As long as you're intentional in what you buy, and keep, then you're doing great. However most people are consumers and marketing has influence on them. I don't know how I got to this point, but marketing has no influence on me. I looked at Black Friday ads last year and didn't even want anything. The low prices don't matter if you don't want the items related to them. When I do want something, over $50, I'll typically price shop for months or years before buying it.

For a bookworm I find it very hard to get rid of books. After reading and thinking about it a lot, I realized I can start applying minimalism to books by sitting for a long time in front of my bookshelf and start different piles of books: the ones I really loved/enjoyed, the books I really want to read, the books I didn't enjoy/hated and the books I would never read/less excited to read. After that, I took the last two piles and review again each book to see if I actually felt like it's a book that didn't bring joy to my life, and after that I had 20 books. 20 books that I gave away. I hope to do more in the future, maybe with the books I enjoyed but didn't love until keeping only my favourite books. That's my advise, maybe you can adjust it to your own but the important thing is to start even if it's a little step. :)

About 5 months without these, don't miss a thing. Free mind, more time. Delete them. Delete your home internet, I almost never had that. I only have smart phone and laptop with really basic slowish 4G 1 Mb/s for cheap - and it does everything I need. I just walk for public Wifi if I need faster internet at a times. Believe me Free Wifi is nowadays everywhere, don't pay anything for it. I deleted almost all apps from my laptop and smartphone. So is not taking much of my time.
