Too big & Heavy? New BMW K1600GTL Review 4K: I last road the flagship BMW several years ago and now as an owner of a rival model (Honda GldWIng) I thought it high time I take another look at the big bavarian - here's my thoughts.... Central locking does operate on panniers, top box and cubby holes with the central locking button on the right handle bar. Did you mention the reverse gear? Surprised on your experience with the seat height, I can stand with clear space between crotch and seat with a 30” leg. Yes, after marker pannier protection bars are probably a good idea for when it falls over. After market screens solve the back pressure, although you can usually find a sweet spot between high and low, and still look over the screen, and you have pullout vents on the fairing for extra airflow in hot weather. The pillion does sit very very high up, and has a clear view forward, but does nothing for the CoG. In comparison, the GT compared to the GTLE are very different bikes. Ride the range before committing. The engine is magnificent.

I think the “review” was based on his height and size so naturally he would struggle with a big bike. The other comments were mix of personal preference and lack of product knowledge. Shame as it all started so well……lets predict the outcome of the comparison video with the goldwing….which he owns btw 😂

I'm only 5ft 8in and have a gtl that has done the stelvio many times, both ways two up fully loaded. When you have confidence in the bike you can do almost anything.

Fair review based on your stature. For a 6’4” 218lbs (193cm, 98kg) person of my size it was one of the only touring bikes I felt comfy on. I also had to order the high seat option which I was told was my dealers first. I can easily flat foot the bike even with that option. My first choice was a Gold Wing but felt cramped on it and I wasn’t thrilled with its limited pannier storage. However in total fairness I could have worked around that. I recently completed an 8000 mile, 40 day tour of western USA from Florida. Riding 430 miles (692km) on several occasions per day or more with little discomfort. On curvy steep mountain roads the power and handling was impressive. I found the Bluetooth integration to work reliably away from big cities using a Cardo Bold headset unit. All and all I agree with you, it’s a comfy sport tourer and the storage space was adequate for my lengthy trip with camping gear, cameras, laptop and drone. The engine on this motorcycle will make any gear head smile, what a machine she is!!!

@@TheMissendenFlyer You said it in your review. Too big and not very comfortable moving the beast around. Also, I found the knees were bent too acutely for an old guy. Loved the power though! It's a nice machine but I just like the Goldwing more. And don't get me started on how much I love the DCT :-)

Think I got one of the first K1600 GTLE in Devon in 2011 but had quite a few problems with water pump leaking, new switches etc but excellent 2 up and did a few trips to Spain. Did just under 2k and averaged 60 mpg ( had the K1200 Lux a few years before and went to Europe and again, 60 mpg ) very fast bike, excellent electronic suspension. Great review, Gra and Sandy. P.s, we used to ride to BSB at OULTON Park.4 hours 15 min fully loaded non stop and arrive feeling fresh.

Hi Andy. I’ve ridden a K1600 gt all over Europe. The GT is quite a different ride to the GTL. I fitted an after market screen, and had no such issues with the buffeting. It’s weight is it’s main downside. However, having ridden in what felt like a force nine gale, across southern Spain, I was glad it had the mass to safely cope, and gave me a sure footed ride all the way. The K1600 is not for everyone,and I suspect, it won’t be in BMW,s line up for too much longer.

I had an AeroFlow and AeroWings on my K1600GT and with the deflectors open to reduce behind the screen pressure it was bliss to ride on the motorway. Zero wind noise. Zero turbulence. Could crank the stereo and relax.

Small point. Separating the braking forces from the suspension forces does not prevent front end dive under braking. The nose-down pitching moment acting on any braking motorcycle is a result of the CG being higher up than the point of braking force action (at the tyre to ground contact). The pitching moment creates a downward force at the front tyre and an equal and opposite upward at the rear tyre. This is unavoidable no matter what fork is present - it's just physics. The 'problem' with conventional forks is that as they compress under this downward force they shorten, steepening the rake angle and aligning the fork more with the downward force, thus making the effect even worse. The wishbone-type front ends can maintain the effective rake angle throughout their range of suspension movement by clever design of upper and lower arm lengths - but the front end must still 'compress' as it experiences the same downward force and is not rigid. This misunderstanding is up there with people in the bike media saying increasing suspension preload stiffens suspension. It doesn't, the spring rate is fixed. Hope this helps!

And unfortunately it's another misunstanding that although preloaded dosnt stiffen the spring, per se, the effect of more preload is that the suspension acts and feels to the rider that the suspension is stiffer. Preload as you know sets sag, ie the more preload the less sag. So if I sit on a bike that has had the sag set for a 15 stone rider (I'm 11 stone) ,it won't sag, ergo the suspension will feel stiffer to me,

Plus, the Hossack suspension moves slightly forward under compression which with braking forces trying to drive it aft, holds the suspension up in its stroke. The effect is to negate any brake dive.

Thanks for a great review Andy! I love my 2015 K1600GT. Just gone through 125K miles. Ridden in every state in continental USA and every province in Canada, except Nunavut where there are no roads! Rode all the way up to Alaska and the Arctic Circle on the Dalton. Yes, the K1600 will do gravel! Definitely the ultimate touring motorcycle. Heavy to maneuver at low speeds and once it starts to tip, you will drop it. Rear crash bars highly recommended. Back pressure with windscreen up can be adjusted with the small winglets that can be opened. Before the introduction of the TFT, the K1600 had a dedicated slot for the Nav V/VI GPS. Nobody seems to like the BMW Connected App for serious navigation, so hopefully BMW will bring back an option for a dedicated GPS.

Good review of I bike I’ve always liked the look of but not ridden. I have to say , looking at that sort of money and bike I’d probably choose the Goldwing, let’s face it , that’s the benchmark. As a previous DCT owner it would also push it forward. As for the low pressure area with the screen up. My FJR used to do the same, could actually see rain drops being pulled forward off the visor which was handy.

I loved the Telelever on my R1100RT back in the day, really made front braking confidence inspiring as you get good feedback. As the front does not dive under braking you retain stability and it seems to me the back brake if therefore more effective. I didn't realise the GW had a similar thing. Great review as always.

Hey Andy. I have taken the K1600 GTE out for a test ride and riding solo I felt ok with the weight and handling, and I am 5' 7'. I took the wife out and hated the experience of both of us on the bike. I now ride and own a beautiful Honda GW like yourself and myself and the wife love the experience. We both feel very safe on the bike rather than the K1600. Glad I am not the only one who felt the same way about the BMW. I still like the K1600 but happier with a pillion on the GW.

I personally test rode this bike 2015 version and I found it quite easy to move around at low speed, around round points and U turns. I am not especial fit being 61 and 6feet tall. I have appreciated the weight on the Highway though. Overall very stable and a great bike. Loved the test ride but beware of this right handle, it is very sensitive 😅

Thanks for another interesting review, I guess at 6'3" and 18st I have a different ride perspective and found this bike brilliant last year 2 up touring for a total of 11k. Coming from a K1200LT, (even heavier) I find BMW have worked wonders with the handling / manoeuvring. The main issue I have had is a faulty quick shifter, (fixed now) and tyres.... Usually gone after 3k miles and now on the 5th set at 15k. Great engine and sporty tourer though 🙂

Great review. I couldn't agree more with your comments. I owned a 2013 GTL for two years and finally decided to sell it last fall primarily because of the weight. I'm in my sixties and have been riding since my teens. It's by far the most top heavy bike I've ridden and with the wife on the back every stop had me a bit apprehensive. I think it's a beautiful bike with an engine that's second to none. Maybe if I were a decade or two younger I would be ok with it. By the way, I enjoy your aviation videos as well. I've been flying since the late seventies. I've run across a number of pilots that ride. Great camaraderie in both communities. Stay safe my friend.

I owned a BMW GTL from the 90s but switched to a Goldwing in 2009 and never looked back. I did test ride a K1600 GTL in 2013/2014? but found it very top heavy and not as refined as the Goldwing. Alongside the Goldwing I’ve gone through a KTM 1290 SAS, a Ducati Multistrada 1260, an Aprillia Tuono V4 but have settled on a 2022 Goldwing non-tour DCT. Thanks TMF for another great review.

Regarding the back pressure when the screen is up, I replaced my stock screen on my bike with one from CalSci and they engineer it with a hole that prevents that back pressure. Not sure if it's available in the UK as they're made in California and they're a small shop, but it's something for people to consider.

Hi Andy, thanks for the review. Being an owner of a 2013 K1600GTL, I looked forward to this review with a view to upgrade my bike. After viewing this video, I won’t be upgrading as I was hoping it was a little more nimble at commuting speeds than my bike. It’s my only criticism of the bike because as a tourer, it absolutely rocks! I agree 100% with the weight issue. I have the exact same fear and trepidation as you have at low speed. Your bike luckily has reverse and hill-hold functions that my bike lacks, and these aid low speed manoeuvring somewhat, but overall, not good around city streets (in Adelaide, Australia). Your reviews are excellent, this one no exception, thank you for it. Keep up the good work. Planning on coming Down Under? Cheers Frank.

I'm 6'7 and I love my K1600GTL. The handling through the Twisties is amazing for a big bike. I also love the power of the engine. I swapped from a Goldwing. They are an awesome bit of kit. An aftermarket windscreen fixes the wind issue.

How do you not find the seat height to footpegs too small? I am 6ft6" and test rode a K1600 and a 1250 GSA and the GSA was by far a lot more comfortable to sit on and handled better (surprisingly). Hence I opted for the GSA, but that K1600 engine is amazing.

Nice one again, Mr Flyer. Thank you for bringing a bit of summer to a dreary winter's day! As I ride a quite heavy bike myself, the weight as such would not be an issue for me, but what puts me off is the way the bike disfigured by the overly bulbous fairing (which sadly also affects the RT). Having to choose I would probably go for the more consistent style of the Grand America. BTW, how would you compare the feeling of the engine to the Gold Wing? As I have failed to organise a Honda test ride for the better part of two years now, maying getting a BMW might be easier.

Sometimes the best reviews come from previous owners who have logged many more miles. I agree that the weight factor is challenging. As an older type I prefer an RS and R9T for their weight and ease of mobility and sportiness. Many models to fit the range of age and personal preferences. Too many models, so little time.!! I remember the online bike configurator which BMW offered a few years ago. Enter your height, inside leg and weight and it immediately presented a list of suitable bikes. I entered my vital statistics (5'5", 29, 10.5 stone) and up popped a message "There are no suitable bikes in the BMW range" 🙄😂🤣

I love BMW bikes but my local dealer is just a disgrace. I have tried to do a deal three times and failed because they insulted me with a trade in value barely better than scrap value. They treat me like crap every time I go near them but I live in Aberdeen so nearest alternative is Inverness, two hours away. There’s one in Dundee but owned by the same group I’ve been tortured by so that’s not an option. I still have a BMW but went to Barnsley to get the last one. If only someone would explain to some of these dealers that customers pay money which helps them exist. It’s therefore better not to make them hate you by treating them like dirt every time they come near.

Good review TMF 👍 Cases and top box are central locking. I find Sat Nav via phone way better than dedicated device. World maps are free with BMW app, works with wiz wheel, wireless charging, navigation to contacts, better security off bike, call and media features.

The Gold Wing I think is heavier - but it’s centre of gravity is so much lower hence making it easy to live with…

Good review Mr F. Have owned our 2018 GTL for about 15 months now and put 7500 miles on it including a tour of Spain/Portugal and back up through France, along with a trip to Slovenia and agree totally with tge long didtance, two up comfort. I’m not a big guy, similar stature to yourself but heavier, and agree to a point about the slow speed weight. My inseam is 30” so have low seat and can more or less flat foot. You do need to be careful when coming to stop, especially 2 up, keeping bars straight keeps bike upright. Also found for low speed manoeuvres fitting the pull back bar plates makes a huge difference and lets you feel more in control. Great bike - GT is different beast with lack of top box making COG lower, but wife likes her ‘throne’ so we went for GTL. Love it!!

Good review Andy. You would have to be Egor or the Hulk to ride one of these bikes. We all drop our bikes especially in the garage lol. How many people would it take to lift up ?

I own an 2018 K1600 GTL. When I first started riding it, the weight was very intimidating. I agree with your comment that it felt as if you were going to drop it at every stop. HOWEVER - after riding this machine for a few months, the weight becomes less of a problem. I'm now very comfortable at traffic stops - even if they are off-camber. It's a heavy bike and it does take some getting used to, but the long distance riding performance and comfort is very well worth the effort. I've been across the US twice on mine (fully loaded) and it's been a pleasure to ride.

Totally agree. I am 5'4" (1,65m) and it took me a while to get used to the weight. I took a course in slow maneuvering, which helped a lot. In october we made a 2000 km ride in Northen Spain and the Picos de Europa (with pillion). It was great. Thanks Andy for the review.

Agree! I am 6'4" on a 2014 GTL. Took a few weeks to get used to the weight. I bought the bike because I wanted something comfortable for my wife. She loves it. While riding, I sometimes forget she is back there. The bike has that much power.

Enjoyed that thanks . I can't help thinking that a modern maxi scooter will do everything the K1600 (or a Goldwing for that matter) will do (apart form the top speed, but do you really need to go faster than 90 mph) for a quarter of the price, in comparable comfort and with the same practicality, plus the added bonus of being able to stop more-or-less wherever you want without fear of it falling over!

Hi Andy, just to confirm that the central locking works on everything on my 2018 K1600GT. I'm a little taller than you, 1.93cm or 6ft 4 inches in old money and stop/starts are never an issue. I push it about by just sitting on it and using my legs. I only learnt to ride when i got to 54 yrs old and this is already my second K1600GT. BTW, I did manage to pause your video on the disclaimer. 99% of us love what you post otherwise we would not subscribe, just ignore the trolls👌

Interesting review, I think it does have a place for a mobile phone, it's under the screen and above the dash. But having had 2 of these bikes and being over 6 foot I did find it too heavy when parking etc. I have gone back to an FJR to get a sporty touring bike with less weight. Looking forward to the comparison review.

I did a road trip through Europe with a mate who had one of these monsters (think it was only the 1200 RT though). Halfway through the trip, this flashing alert came up on his dash saying the bike was due for scheduled maintenance from BMW. He couldn't turn it off and spent a day worrying about it. We finally had to lose a day on a big detour finding a dealer to service the thing. So even though they can chew up miles, it felt like he was kind of chained to civilisation and schedules. If they're still made like that, I'd never want to ride across a place like the USA or Canada on one. Cheers for the great review btw.

Nice review TMF & completely agree that the weight or more specifically the distribution of it would completely put me off. I'm pretty much the same size as you & there's no chance I could manage that or would want to. Despite it clearly being a great tourer I would definitely be looking at something else if I was after this type of bike.

The central locking is amazing, pity you couldn't work it out. I did 100,000 km om my GT, mostly 2 up, including all around Europe and Australia. Wonderful machines. Best 2 up bike I've ever ridden. Sad that you won't experience this. Enjoy your channel.

@@TheMissendenFlyer I am just over 6', though the GT has a higher seat and pegs than the GTL, more ground clearance for sportier riding 🤣. The only time I experienced what you described at lights etc was when I had to pillion my 6' 7" 100kg mate.

As far as the wind screen, on my 2004 R1150RT, I had the exact issue. Slight helmet buffering and sucking anterior pull. Loved that bike, but own a Concours now, that has taken that all away.

I had a 1250 RT and did the autobahn’s on it and it was back in its design element. In the UK these large and heavy bikes are overkill - my opinion. I’m glad I’ve owned one and realised a small ambition ( Colditz castle) and the Autobahn’s. But daily use and out of the garage etc they are just a tad too much. They do make sense on big tours for pillions my pillion loved the 2 St1300’s and less so the 2 RT’s.

I agree totally with you review, sir. I loved our K1600 GTL, but I dropped it with my wife aboard more times that I'd like to remember. For that reason, we traded it for a Goldwing, which I never dropped once. Perhaps it's a difference between the flat six and the inline six, as well as the actual location of the gas tank. There are always trade-offs, but for my wife, the slow speed drops were a deal-breaker. BTW: I'm 5'11"

Great review as I’m going to try one out. Now the weight thing……. I’ve ridden Harleys for 20 years, you should try a Street Glide or an equivalent Harley Ultra and then you’d know what heavy is 😂 ps I now have a GS Adventure and put 17000 miles on it in 18 months.👍

I completely get the point of the GTL and the gold wing - they’re basically the motorcycle equivalent of a big camper. A huge amount of case to sit in the garage for one or two trips a year. They do long two up trips better than anything but I’d absolutely need another bike or two for 95% of my riding that’s where bikes like the R1250GS or RS can almost do everything. The old K1200GT was massively underrated. Great review as ever

Thanks for a great, honest review. Like many people, I can only afford one bike at a time, so these huge tourers are not for me...25k seems a lot to pay for something that has just one specific purpose. I've looked at various BMW's over the years and their pricing infuriates me. Their lead prices are totally misleading, as any purchaser will inevitably have to spend a small fortune on accessories, etc, to get the bike they actually want. The "optional" quickshiifter on this, already expensive, top of the range model, is a case in point.

Very interesting review - and kudos to you for owning up to not feeling comfortable enough to take a pillion. For me, knowing and acknowledging your limits is the clearest sign of a responsible rider. You didn't try out the reverse gear on it? No idea where it would be but a friend of mine has one of these, and mentioned that it came with a reverse.

I've been looking forward to this review for sometime as the K1600 GT LE is actually I'm considering adding to my list of motorcycles, just for the reasons you state, two up and riding across Europe. Appreciate that you're only 'likkle at 5'8" and you mention it a few times, but as I'm 6'3" it will be easier to move about my garage and at low speeds. When I sat on one, I thought it would be great, but some reviewers questioned the seating position over longer distances. (I'll read some other comments as existing owners are the best reviewers) When I looked last year (bought a Speed Triple instead 😁) but I do believe the K1600 GTL had a low seat option. Was that on the one you borrowed? It's a shame that Carol didn't get chance to be a pillion for her view, but understand you reasons. One of my reasons I am looking is for the load capacity. As we're both tall and fully loaded up combined weight and luggage there's not many bikes with over 200Kg load capacity. It will be good to see you review of the 'wing but for me, they're too low. Hi Andy, I ride the K1600 Grand America. What a bike, I have bad right knee ligaments, and that meant when I had my 1200rt after 20minites riding, I had to lower my right leg to straighten it out because of pain. On the Grand America with the forward boards, it's perfect. I could ride for days without getting sore. Listening to you talking while I was typing, you were talking about slow riding and the bike feeling heavy. I have found if you keep your head up and look forward when you come to a stop, you don't even notice the weight. Having said that, if you have a habit of moving your head around from side to side as you pull up, you could drop it. Loved your trip through Canada & Alaska. What a beautiful place. I don't have to go now as you and your wife have done it for me. Apart from the fully loaded bike I have, I have fitted Ride Vision which gives me blind spot monitoring and forward collision warning. No false alerts and a 360-degree warning around the bike it's awesome it should be standard on every bike. It also records everything.

Thanks for the review. I'm a little surprised by the central locking. I had an earlier K1600 GT which had central locking and the system locked both glove boxes, the fuel filler as well as both panniers. (I didn't have the top box). So it sounds like a bit of a retrograde step. I understand that BMW no longer has a relationship with Garmin so no further BMW Navigator versions will be developed. As an alternative, BMW offers a phone integration cradle which uses the existing GPS mounting plate. However if you want true GPS, a set-up, like you had on your Canada / US trip, might be the only solution. Agree on the weight issue. While I managed to cope with the weight and occasionally rode with a pillion, I ultimately traded in the K1600 for a GS.

My experience with the K1600 is a bit different than most others who are posting here. I may have got a bad bike, but at 1400 miles I had to have the throttle body replaced, which took the bike down for two weeks. Then I had the transmission recall, which took the bike off the road for another week. All this was within the first year. Then when I finally was able to take it on a long trip the bike decided to start overheating at 15K miles. The radiator is scheduled to be remove and cleaned at 18K, but mine did not make it that far. I am told this is a very common issue for the K and the only way to cure it is to remove the radiator and clean it out from the back. This took the bike down for another week and we had to rent a car to continue our trip. Add to this the cost of maintenance on this bike (requiring abut 5 hours of labor every 6000 miles) was excessive compared to other bikes I have owned. I would not have minded paying the extra cost if the bike was reliable, but mine was not. When the bike was running properly it was a great bike to ride. Power, handling, suspension, brakes, comfort etc, are top notch. I came from a 900 pound touring cruiser and the K1600's weight did not bother me. In fact, I thought it was very easy to handle at slow speeds. Sadly, the bike was traded due to the reliability issues.

@@TheMissendenFlyer I went back to an adventure bike. I now have one of the new Triumph Tiger 1200 GT Explorers. I have a number of friends who have had good luck with their Triumphs so decided to give it a try after riding it. So far I am really happy and it has made it over 4000 miles without a problem, which is more than twice what the BMW got...LOL.

Another excellent review thank you. Cant beat the fact it is an outstanding tourer. However, I agree with your conclusion, it is too top heavy. I test rode a Triumph Tiger 1200, and glad I did not buy as, unlike my BM 1250R, I would have dropped it at a junction by now, especially when eeking out between parked cars and needing a rapid stop when a car suddenly appears at a lean. Another comment, is yes it is good to have a comfortable bike one can ride all day, but if it is comfort one only wants, then buy a nice car. Cant beat a car for comfort.

Interesting review, matching what Richard said over on Mcn about his long term bike. Something that might help your touring viewers, a comparison of the uber tourers (this and Goldwing), over something like a GS. How different would the USA trip have been, using your Goldwing compared to the provided GS. Questions like that might help people out. All the best. John

The Gold Wing carries it's weight much lower which makes it a lot easier to move around - plus it has forward and reverse creep functions which makes it dead easy to manouvre.....it's the prime reason I went for it.

It’s a big one. I would choose the R1200RT if I needed a big tourer; I had one. A bit more maneuverable ar slow speeds than this one although that one is still heavy too and my shoulders had already problems with that one. You can ride the R1200 with the screen at it highest without problems. You can ride without ear plugs, that’s how quiet it is.

I have the 2014 model and couldn’t agree more about the high COG at slow speed. With the misses on the back I have nearly dropped it a few times and had to use all my strength to stop it going over and I’m 6 foot. I used to hate the buffeting and my head being pulled forward at speed with the standard screen so I went on eBay and bought a Puig screen, problem sorted.

Hi Andy, I had a K1600 GTSE and am , like you, 5' 8" (well, if I look up) with a shortish 30" leg, I found the weight OK most of the time (I found myself on the Hardknott Pass on mine which was a bit touch and go though :) ) , I think you get used to hauling it about over a bit of time, the best bit was settling it into corners nice and early then firing it out from the Apex. The engine is as you say, pretty epic. For me the downside of this bike is that it it is too capable, by which I mean that at UK speed limits speeds it is barely off idle and not overly engaging, being so easy to plod along at 70, quite removed from a riding experience. I don't regret owning one, that powertrain is an experience in itself. I've now moved to a GSA 1200 (Low chassis), which might just be the best bike I've ever experienced, Enjoy your vids, keep it up. Thanks.

I think more riders if they are being honest rate the ability to move the motorcycle around the garage high on their list. Not just the in and out but just getting it out of the way on doing work in the garage. I know it has a reverse but most of my moves the reverse might be more trouble than it is worth. The 2nd point also concerns weight when your riding if you want to stop for a break or take some pictures needing to have a almost a completely flat hard surface to park so you don't have to worry about dropping the bike would be a show stopper for me. During a week long ride last July one of the group had a 1600 GT and I was impressed with the bike and what he could do with but he was a big bloke. I like the bike but it is just too big for me.

Hi Andy , Completely agree with you about the weight or rather it’s location , I owned one for a year or so toured Spain etc , and loved every minute of it (above 5mph) but bloody hell trying to move it around or negotiating old Spanish towns with a mate on the back was hard work , in the end that was the reason I let it go, Still miss it and hope every year that BM will wave a magic wand and fix it , Another great Video by the way. I don't know if you have tried the trick with the side stand ,when stationary turn the handle bar's fully to the right hand side, it makes it so much easier to get the bike upright, physics and all that malarkey,

I can’t speak for the GTL but I have a 2022 GT and have put 3k on it since December 2022. The weight generally disappears, I am 5’10” once you get used to it. Reverse is useful but not a must if you are used to handling larger bikes. I came off a GS as I felt I wasn’t using it for what it was designed for. I use the GT monthly to travel from Inverness to Birmingham. If you fancy popping off the motorway for a twistie blast it is very capable. Occasionally it feels a little skittish but that is perhaps the weather, I’ll wait till the summer for final comment. The screen is 80% okay… agree with all the comments and will go aftermarket in the summer BUT do we expect too much these days? Reach to the bars is about 1” too far after a few hours. Seat very comfy. I can ride it for 6-7 hours in all weathers and not feel particularly fatigued. I’m 46 and this is my first heavy sports tourer. Have ridden pretty much everything else!

I have to agree with your review. I am 6"3" and I took one for a road test with my wife on the back and was not confident at all with her on the back. I have a GSA and there is no problems with her riding that. Everything else about the bike is great. The weight just put me off.

Cracking review. Looks an awesome bike but the Goldwing looks way better. My mate had one of these but it did look really heavy to get off the side stand and he's about 6'7" took five of us to pick it up when it dropped in a rut in Wales too. You mention the radar thing and though blind spot detection looks class I wouldn't have it on the front of a bike, it's a nightmare on the truck - always throwing up errors if dirty or it snows, trying to stop if a bridge casts a shadow or if a car in front slows down on a slip road, it's good through roadworks mind but horrible if you are going to overtake at some point...

@TheMissendenFlyer I feel most people who review ACC think it works well as it will follow at a safe distance. Try forgetting it's there and dilrive normally though and it's a right pain. The first thing we do in the truck is turn off AEBC, lane assist and ACC lol

This is an impressive bike but you do raise some points about how big and heavy can a bike be and still be manageable in all situations, the total weight with passenger, rider and luggage will be staggering. Interesting their flagship doesn’t have radar as part of its bells and whistles.

Re the windscreen, at 6'1" I find the GT screen with the "V" in the middle better for getting in a bubble of clean air while not having to look through the screen. You can pick them up for around £60 from slipstream(I think) in wales. Having got a little tired of the reliability on my 2015 1600 with 66,000 miles, front wheel bearings every 20-24 thou, water pump, front suspension ball joints, cooling fan + having to remove and deep clean the radiator every 15,000 to keep the overheating under control I had a test on the new Goldwing a couple of years ago. Apart from the much lower centre of gravity I was pretty disappointed to be fair and was expecting much better from the big H for £35,000, an extra £10,000 over the K. Power, handling etc all ok, but not quite as good as the K + the final nails in the coffin were the none touch screen sat nav, inability stash more than one helmet at that time (each pannier will hold a full face + 1 in the top box on the K) and cluttered switch gear due to not being able to use the menu wheel on the move. So I have decided to stick with my present K1600, especially as it's only worth a couple of bags of crisps and a balloon due to the mileage and I can do a heck of a lot of repairs for the price to change.

Hi Andy, enjoyed your opening review on the K1600, it's a shame about the weight issue, because it does sap confidence especially on slow speed manoeuvring, for sure. I remember many years ago being told don't buy a bike unless you can pick it up off the floor, and it's not yours till you've dropped it, the first adage making a lot of sense I suppose. I think BMW have done a decent job with canting the engine to lower the centre of gravity, but an inline 6 will never be as good as a Boxer engine in that respect. So I can fully appreciate you not wanting to take Mrs Flyer on the back, shame though. Thank you.

An in-line 6 will never be as good as a flat twin! Wow that’s a long stretch. I own a R1200RT and it feels like a bus to ride around, it rattles and has no low rev pickup, the K1600 is so much smoother and powerful at low rev. It’s a no brained this engine is 1000 times better

@@christianfeketeHi, I was on about the centre of gravity not how smooth the engines are, I agree the Boxer engine is agricultural compared to the K1600 smoothness, it's just how the weight is held is a lot higher on the K1600. Hope that clears up any confusion.

Given it's overall mass & rather non-negotiable CofG, how would it fare in a late-night elk test? (UK read 'blue-rinse' in a Micra) ie. Does all that double-wishbone malarkey leave the bike in any way 'flickable' at speed, or are the fancy-dancer headlights just a muscle tensing 'heads-up' for what you & the Battlestar Germania are about to run into? My (imaginary) money's on the Honda : )

An interesting honest review. I tried a GTL before committing to buying a GT. The GTL although extremely comfortable I felt I was sitting in the bike rather than on it. Seat height adjustment does help but the GT has a better riding position for me, the pegs are slightly higher and I believe the bars are not so close meaning a slight forward lean. A common negative I hear and read is about its weight, yes it is heavy particularly at slow manoeuvres however it’s all perfectly achievable with a bit of care. Having said that I certainly don’t want to have to pick it up. As with a lot of skills, practice will build confidence in handling this amazing machine. I am not blessed with super human strength at 1.8m and knocking on in years, I have a ST1300A which I had since 2007, the transition to the GT has not been difficult. My wife thinks the GT is more comfortable than the Pan European. I still love my Pan but the GT is a world apart in technical features and hope to have a few more years exploring Europe on it. Keep up the good work.

I think we're largely in agreeance over it's agility, etc - bear in mind he's at least 3 times the size of me so for him the weight issue isn't an issue like it is for me.....

Can understand what you mean with its flaws. Personally I’d rather have a GS/ RT or even the Gold Wing especially for two-up touring! 👏👍😀

Totally agree about the weight of the bike making every parking stop, mini roundabout etc a potential trauma Andy and like you I just wouldn't even consider it for that reason. I'm identical dimensions to you too and I select my bikes based on how they physically work for me and the fashion for ever taller, heavier bikes is marginalising a lot of riders.

May be a problem with your central locking, the button on the handlebar locks panniers and top box as well as cubby holes.

Andy, It does lock all the panniers, you have the key location on the panniers in the wrong position. I had the previous one and sold it because as you say they are just to big for someone of our size and I to was frightened to take a passenger, Although I did have it for 5 yrs, love that engine. I now have a new R1250RT which definitely a better bike.
