I’ve got a good Daytona story: At the end of 2008 I bought a 675 race bike from a young up and coming club racer called John Simpson, he was moving up to BSB Superstock and changing to an R6 ( the bike the beat then ). In 2009 I raced the 675 in a club endurance championship while unfortunately John wasn’t getting on at all well with the R6 at BSB level and his best result was 22nd. With nothing to loose I suggested he borrow his old 675 back for the Caldwell round towards the end of the season. He put my bike on pole and won the race! Not sure, but I think this might have been Triumphs first BSB win.

Thanks for the review, what a lovely bike. The whine from a triple is not intake noise, it is from the balancer shaft which has straight cut gears, that is what makes the whine or whistling noise that is so distinctive. Makes for a characterful sound. You certainly get induction roar from Triumph triples but the whine is the balancer shaft which is necessary to balance out the uneven power strokes.

Great video TMF, good to see ya on a sport bike again! As a proud owner of a 2011 Daytona (love the speedy bugger) I was happy to see a new rendition but I must agree with the 'not so great' bits you pointed out...for such a limited/high end machine you can't cut corners. I wish they made another 'mass produced' one, Triumph is more than capable. And to to tie it with your review of the Fireblade (too much machine for everyday road riding), I think the key is to keep them 600/700cc. It's great power without being excessive, and that's what makes them so much fun on road as well as on track. Ride safe!

The British love their sports bikes. Much more than here in the Netherlands. Naked bikes and allroad bikes; do it all bikes so to say are the most popular. I couldn’t ride it because of the low handle bar. Nice for track days but a bit much for the normal world. It looks good.

I own one of these and I appreciate your review for being the first I've seen to mention the surprising top heaviness of this bike. The balance point feels narrower and more precarious as a result, and makes the seat height feel more challenging than it otherwise would for shorter riders. I don't mind the extra wiring given it's pretty high quality stuff and not too bad to look at, but I absolutely hate the TFT dash. The angle is wrong and even set to full brightness it's hard to read through a shield and sunglasses (sunny clime here). The mirrors do vibrate to a blur but that's better than not being able to see past your elbows, which is not an issue with this bike. The positives I've experienced follow your review pretty closely: superb, stable but sharp handling, silky smooth gearbox and up/down shifting, and excellent, very controllable brakes. The suspension is as good as it gets for non-electronic bits. Right-sized yet ample power completes the goodness. Carbon fiber is not to my taste but it comes with the package so there you go. It's competition for my money was the Ducati V2 but that bike sports a challenging 33" seat height and generates uncomfortable heat, so no contest, even though the V2 sports IMU controlled rider aids and this Moto2 does not. Where I live the Moto2's are being discounted a bit, which also helped the buying decision. Keep up the great reviews!

I've ridden a Hayabusa 2nd Gen, but I went out of my way to buy a ZZR600, because I believe the early 2000's 600cc sportbikes had excellent street manners, with a ton of mid range torque. They shortened the stroke and kept trying to push the maximum horsepower after 2006. The problem, if you keep shortening the stroke, you lose the mid range power. Even the early model Yamaha Fazer 1000, had a better engine, with more torque, until they also shortened the stroke, and made the bike less fun to drive. All they need to do is start making long stroke engines again, instead of the new fangled racing trash. (Also an overdrive 6th gear ratio!!) The reason the 2nd Gen (and 3rd Gen) Hayabusa is so fun, is because it's a very long stroke engine. With a 600cc bike, they can get away with a much longer stroke, because the pistons are lighter, and with some clever counterbalancing, they can make it glassy smooth. They could make a 600cc version of the Hayabusa engine, and it would be electric smooth, while having immense torque.

Bit of a dream bike of mine! The last Daytona was a lovely looking bike in my opinion, making this one look only slightly out of date. If Triumph made a new Daytona I would certainly lust after it, but would I buy it? No probably not. So I guess their market research is accurate. There’s a company in Essex that rents out bikes and I think they have one of these, in the coming years if I ever get back to the UK I will have to give it a go. I have never regretted buying a Street Triple, a 2014. 675R. by modern standards it maybe a little aged, no rider aids, no fancy dash system etc! But hell! it's still is a superbly handling Bike. With a little 'tweaking' can be made even better. Having said that its a shame Triumph didn't make the Moto 2 Daytona less like the original Daytona. I agree with you when you said it looked and felt like they [Triumph] rushed it out the door. But the sound of the induction 'Growl'.... now that is just music to the ears...

I’d disagree that you need neither rider aids or a fancy dash on a 675. The only time I ever looked at the dash in 5 years was to check my speed & fuel light, and if you get into trouble with a 100hp bike; you’re basically in the wrong gear.

@@brianperry I’m with you on abs but none of my bikes, since 1975, have had it so I’ll bow to your superior knowledge on that one. For much over 100bhp I’d want traction control, but on the 675, I never felt it was necessary. If it was greasy I just used the next gear up to keep the torque and revs lower.I had two stroke air-cooled racing Yamaha’s for a while in the late seventies so by habit have always ridden on road with two fingers on the clutch and two on the front brake at all times, which cuts your reaction time, and makes it impossible to ‘grab’ a great handful of front brake……which helps.

So, I've been contemplating pulling the pin on one these to replace my old ZX7R as finding it's weight & pressure on wrists becoming tiresome. I love the limited edition special versions of cars & bikes, but I'm now wondering whether buying a good used Daytona 675 with very low miles is a better way to go. It will be my first Daytona as well, & only used for weekend ride outs on the road, I'm thinking all those rider settings, the screen (I'm not fussed with tech) the brembos & Ohlins, am I really going to enjoy it more than say a 2013 675? Then there's the double price tag, the double insurance, & the fact would be scared to leave it anywhere, drop it etc, & worry about adding mileage & reducing it's value. Would I really enjoy this bike on the roads more than a 2013 675, to warrant the extra cost? Great video review, I'm just now undecided.

Great review as ever Andy, but how are you getting that ‘off the bike’ shot?? Is it anything to do with that ’thing’ we can see growing out of the bike when you use the view of you from the mirror cam? It’s like you are being followed by a drone.

It has some lovely details and Triumph make lovely bikes, but to my eyes, it does look dated, particularly the front end, around the headlights. I will add that obviously looks are subjective and I am biased in that since I took a short break from bikes, then came back, I just don't find that sportsbikes do it for me anymore, with the exception of certain unobtainable exotica. Thanks for another great review👍

If ever a bike cried out for gold wheels!! I'd like them to bring out a 350-400 Daytona to bring down the weight and keep the style. Don't need more than 90mph as long as it gets there quick. !!

Nice review. I always thought that Daytonas were the nicest looking sports bikes. Should Triumph bring them back? I don't ride sports bikes any more these days, my idea of the ideal bike would be something like a Sprint with shaft drive ... with the emphasis on the "would be" ... I think it a shame that those sorts of bikes are unfashionable now.

Sportbikes have been tremendously ugly, starting in 2003... I feel like they started using artificial intelligence to design sportbikes, using an automatic computer algorithm, to generate "random" shapes and colors. I have been so confused, how they went from the Ducati 916cc and the 1998 Yamaha R1, to today's modern sportbikes, which look... Weird! Triumph bikes are beautiful, and are at least, much much better than any of today's UGLY Kawasaki's...

Great review and a nice looking bike. No please dont go up in cc Triumph. The price always go up and also the insurance costs. No make a bike like the honda cbr650 to compete with like the looks and price. Theres so few bikes like that on the market. A little bit tired of all the naked bikes nowadays so please Triumph make an affordable sportmachine to compete with honda and aprilia. Looking forward to that

I nearly put a deposit on one when the rumours of a new Daytona were out. I’m so glad I didn’t. I was hoping to see a totally new redesigned bike. Sadly it’s the same old looking Daytona blinged up! I for for one would love to see Triumph build a totally new Daytona. If they could build a sports bike with the looks of my 899 Panigale I’d buy one tomorrow as i’d love to buy British! Sadly I can’t see that happening as they do so well with Retro Classics and adventure bikes coupled with the fact that the sports bike market is shrinking. You can only but hope!

Sports bikes are a bit out vogue , have been for some time , its all adventure bikes and retros that do the business these days ,and for some reason Triumph weren't that successful back in the day when sports bikes were the thing to have , shame because they did make some great bikes , just couldn't quite cut it with the big boys . That's a nice collectors piece though for all its minor faults , review is spot on as always .

Nice review & a very cool bike. I'm still mistified that there's seemingly no market for middleweight sports bikes? Maybe limited runs is the answer? I personally think the manufacturers weren't making the right propositions to customers as the RS660 & R7 have been well received & there's more to follow so there's still plenty of interest in that size of sporty bike it appears. I'd buy a 250/400/600/750cc true sports bike tomorrow if it was the right price & spec. NO semi-active suspension, keyless ignition or overly complex tech & modes etc to keep it pure & affordable as bikes of this size just don't need 10 levels of traction control, anti-lift or engine braking!
