As I've previously mentioned, this is really brilliant. Even with E-Clutch 'switched on', it appears it's still possible to change gears in the 'old school fashion', at any time if one so desires. I can't see this not proving a success for Honda. If so, just watch the other Japanese manufacturers follow suit with their own systems. This is NOT an automatic in anyway. It just removes using the clutch for the rider, IF so desired. Nothing more. So clever. Well done Honda! 👏👏

I've mentioned it in your first video. E-Clutch makes the DCT redundant. Can still be ridden with clutch, tried and tested gearbox style. In my eyes this is a winning tech.

yeah, but some people want the automatic. I would rather have the e-clutch. I love my Rebel 1100 DCT, but I cannot stand riding it in auto mode, I only run it in manual mode, so the e-clutch would work fine.

Less than an hour after watching your initial cb650r e-clutch video and my questions and criticisms have been well and truly answered. Looks like a great system if a little ugly. It really helps those who just want the convenience of an auto clutch and it's of great benefit to those who have unfortunately lost function of their left hand. I hope BMW offer a thumb switch gear shift option for those riders who can't use a left foot gear shift as well.

I agree, it is a bit ugly, but it's acceptable considering the benefits it brings, and it seems to work very well. Hopefully in the future, as technology improves, the Honda E-Clutch system will become less intrusive and shrink in size, but it's a very good first effort, well done Honda. 👍

Great video. Honda is really smart, in the way they did not completely redesign the bike, to be dedicated only to the E-clutch setup. Honda put the entire mechanism on the side of the motor. That black cap is only one third of the E-clutch. The lower two thirds is below that black cap and it looks to me like the entire assembly can be removed for service which is just plain Honda smart. I would recommend getting some form of fall protection on this bike as soon as you bought it. But I am really happy that the the management and engineers at Honda, are continuing to support motorcycle riders worldwide, by continuing to innovate in common sense ways. This and the , very dependable ( it turns out), automatic transmission motorcycle are really impressive.

The Honda CB650R is a brilliant bike. I had one a couple of years. Did 36000km on it. My old body needed footrests lower down (easy job with a pair of brackets) and a higher/taller handlebar. Scrambler type. And that was fine. Really easy to handle the power since it comes gradually. So smooth. And now looking better with those new designed air intakes. I might go back to own one when I'm done with my lovely Duke 790. Thank you mr Flyer. I've always enjoyed your films. Cheers!

Adding to the BMW system. The BMW system works basically like the Honda DCT with the foot shifter, but operates the clutch similar to the e-clutch. You can select it as manual, shifting with the foot or automatic, bike shifts on its own but you can manually override with the foot shifter. It seems though like BMW does not have shifters on the handle bar and I haven´t seen or figured out, if there are different automatic modes, like with the DCT. Thanks for answering the questions. Everything worked as I expected but was nice to see, that it seems to work very well in those situations.

Good stuff Andy! It's what it says on the can...its an e clutch not a e gearbox 😂 it's does everything a manual bike will do without a clutch....where as DCT auto style change gear for you. I like the sound of BMWs new 'auto' as it sounds much like the gear shirft option you can get on the DCT africa twin...which mens you can use gear shift instead of paddles...which I really think IS the best of both worlds. Not available on latest generation NCs unfortunately. Nice bonus video...cheers

By time I saw your video in the States there was already 75 comments. This proves your audience is interested and like me always value your testings. Maybe other manufacturers will see this and decide to update their motos. Like a fuel guage or gear indicator. This would increase the price for the people who can't count shifts or reset the trips when fueling. I think a "Lift Assist" on big, heavy bikes is the next thing. Those heavy GS's are a bear to lift when fully loaded. Lol. 👍👍5🏍🙋‍♂️

Honda's DCT on AT for example was too different than normal riding style, though it worked well. Bikes are for fun, at least these expensive ones and two switches on the handlebars to chenge gears felt very digital. Glad they quickly got to the drawing board to design even better solution than DCT. This is just perfect. It's best of both worlds, works better than quick shifter even on high end bikes, is a bolt on attachment so it's not a gearbox mod to have too many things changed on the normal bikes, and is cheap. A solid home run

Very informative TMF. I wasn't aware of the imminent BMW system. Although I did hear of a similar Yamaha system coming out soon. They seem to have opted for the shift buttons approach, so a kind of semi-auto bike equivalent somewhat like the paddle shift in a lot of cars now. Interesting times.

Thanks for the extra video. This looks really interesting. One point in terms of reliability based on my Honda DCT experience from a Forza - it ** may ** need the battery fully charged for the gearbox selector to work. On the DCT bikes, if the battery is flat the gearbox won't work even after jump starting. That surprised me as I'd presumed the alternator output would ensure enough volts are available for the control circuitry so it is possible that this is due to some built in microcontroller code designed to avoid damage or malfunction whilst the bike is being ridden. I was stranded twice because of this. (Tracker draining the battery). I never leave my bike for extended periods off charge now.

Yeah, cool that you answered those questions. The only question I have is how well will it hold up? Yes, Honda is known for its bullet-proof-ness, but not in all areas. My ridgeline truck, early 6 speed transmission has many known issues, hence they switched to a nine speed gearbox, which apparently, is much more durable. I know this isn’t a car channel, but like any manufacturer, that brings out something new, there’s a strong likelihood of it needing to be tweaked as time goes by. That looks like a lot of small gears in that mechanism, while being pretty far away from the oil pan.

It looks complicated, but mechanically it's not, the two motors are doing exactly the same job turning the clutch lever shaft (probably two motors to make the e clutch unit slimmer) they do not do separate jobs. Mechanically, it looks very well made with proper bearing gear train, not plain bushes. The clever bit is the ECU that takes all sensor inputs and decides when to pull the clutch in and when to let it out. Well done Honda.

Morning Andy, I was impressed with your first demo of this system and that has only been consolidate by you answering most, if not all operational circumstances. I personally still like having the gear change on my foot,as that's what my auto function is already used too and especially as most modern bikes already have too many buttons on the bars as it is. Still can't get over the price for this tec, especially when you think you'd spend more than that having to stick a hugger on to stop crap flying into your rear shock. Talking of shocks or lack of, BMW £1,000 🤔. I swear they'd charge an entry fee ,if they could get away with it. I'm sure, as I commented before, Honda will work on the looks, but as far as I'm concerned, if it means it stays at this price, I'd put up with it and certainly wouldn't tick the option it it was a grand.

Hi Andy, this sounds like a good option for me, as my arthritis is getting worse the older I get, and holding a clutch in when city riding hurts.I previously had the DCT africa twin which was great for my issues, but in the end the bike itself was to heavy. However when I tried to book a test ride on the a e-clutch CB650R, I was informed that dealers were only being issued with the CBR650R version, Which as you know has a completely diferent riding position. Not really suited for us older riders with issues. You did say on your first vid that you were on a press bike, and having tried to ask Honda myself, Which is a whole other level of faffery by the way, You no longer just call the customer service number and ask your question. It has to go through what I was told,an escalation proccess, which will supposedly be answered by email. I am still awaiting that responce. So for the sake of us subscribers, I was wondering if you can ask honda if what Two separate dealers told me is correct. That us possible Honda customers cant actually get a ride on the bike we would be interested in buying. Thanks, and keep up the good work.

Hi Andy, I've got to correct something you mentioned about the DCT during the hill start section of this vid. The DCT does not hold on an incline whilst in gear. If you are on a DCT in 1st gear, the bike will roll back until you accelerate. The clutch does not bite at idle revs. So. In that respect, it performs the same as the e clutch.

Very interesting. I think I want a bike with one. I imagine starting in second is no problem either. There seems to be no downside. Ride it as one wishes.

Would be interesting to know how it performs in tricky situations, like a very steep incline, uphill or downhill, where I’d probably feather the clutch to modulate the power to the wheel

A mate of mine cynically enquired whether that lump was a coffee thermos. I was more reminded of what Mae West once said: "Is that an E-Clutch in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?"

I imagine a modern E-clutch will work just fine, as it isn't exactly a new technology. The Smart City Coupe (450) already had an E-clutch and that car was introduced in the late 90's. I drove a City Coupe and it worked just fine in normal driving. It didn't like speedbumps, as the E-clutch tends to immediately engage as you hit the speedbump and then disengage almost immediately again as you've cleared the speedbump. The solution for my City Coupe was to let go of the accelerator just before the speedbump and it would just ignore the bump. The second thing it didn't really like was the constant speeding up and slowing down at creeping speed in traffic jams. But I imagine the much lower weight of a bike and 30 years of improvement in technology will have sorted out that problem.

and before the Smart, back in the 50's/60's, lots of cheap cars had e-clutches buried in the gear-stick knob allowing foot free changes! Some drivers damaged those cars by forgetting to take their hand off the lever!

@@drdoolittle5724 I remember driving one of the first NSU RO80 on British roads in the late 60’s . That had a micro switch in the gear knob that disengaged the clutch allowing pedal free gear changes.

Hi Andy, Not E clutch related but a video suggestion… I’m due to test ride a couple of Triumphs next Saturday back-to-back and after much searching have discovered a distinct absence of quality advice on what to do / consider on a test ride…. I don’t want to the excitement of trying some new bikes to override my head and make the wrong choice….!

This looks like a great system from Honda and remarkable that it's only a £100 addition to the bike. I'm a big fan of Dct and had it on three different bikes, but on occasion it's been a option it's added about £1000 to the cost of the bike (and about 10kg). At this price, it seems like a no-brainer.

thanks for the review, fills some gaps in :). I think it looks ugly as F myself and spoils the look, but maybe in time there will be better integration as these get more commonplace. As to usage, i wont rule out ever getting one, especially at the price. I know it's not the same, but i thought getting a quickshifter on my hornet would be great, but really aint that bothered as much as i thought i would be to have clutchless gear changing as it's only any good when at higher revs and higher gears anyway, but i know eclutch does the whole range so maybe that would sway me a little. I think it's an amazing bit of tech and can see it really catching-on, the only thing I can't get my head around is that Honda are only charging an extra £100 for it, whiffs of an introductory price point to me, pretty sure our last takeaway cost more than that!

I still think it’s a bit big bit as a technology I’m really interested. Most of my riding is on the commute through traffic and I do stall out every now and then as the hand gets tired or the head goes stupid. Put this as an option in the NC750X (preferably with the ‘hump’ better integrated) and you might just have the best commuter out there.
