UPDATED VERSION with some safety info at the start of the video.

The return spring broke in my mill and I never got a new one. I just reused the broken one and did a real janky fix on it. Without a captive wire those springs can be something else to work with.
@TheNewbieWoodworker

Thanks for the comment. I thought about reusing the existing spring, but in the end I decided to replace it. I wouldn't want to try it without the wire, though!
@1pcfred
@1pcfred 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheNewbieWoodworker the retaining wire looked like it was worth the price of admission to me. Having done it the other way with an unwound spring. You'd have to make some kind of a jig to wind the spring up. A big spring getting lose can really bite you. Like trying to set a mouse trap and it gets you.

@@1pcfred Great analogy! I was thinking you could use a nylon cable tie (bit.ly/2Yl8UuN), and a cable tie gun (bit.ly/2XxmYVd). Not sure how easy it would be to get off, though.

How crucial are the exact measurements? It's a nearly 50 year old machine. My old spring seems to be 7mm wide, but the replacements I'm finding seem to be only 6:" wide. Are any of the measurements crucial or is close close enough? Thanks!
@TheNewbieWoodworker
@TheNewbieWoodworker Жыл бұрын
Honestly I'm not sure. But I would think if it fits in the housing, and is about the right length/tension, everything should be fine. If it were me, I'd try the closest one I could get, and see what happens. Of course, if it ruins your 50 year old machine, you didn't hear that from me. 😄 But like I said, it will probably be fine.
@herbfellows6435
@herbfellows6435 Жыл бұрын
@@TheNewbieWoodworker Thanks. That's pretty much what I thought, but wanted to make sure someone didn't say 'WHAT ARE YOU, NUTS?' The machine owes me nothing, I have probably drilled 5,000 holes with it, and I think I might have paid $50 for it back in the day. Thanks again!
@TheNewbieWoodworker

@@herbfellows6435 That machine is probably more valuable to you personally than other people can understand. When you buy something that old, and have used it as long as you have, it's almost like it's part of the family. So I don't blame you for being cautious!

This product no longer has the options list to view different sizes. So searching for a comparable spring is proving difficult. Anyone have a better way to translate the OD into the length?
@TheNewbieWoodworker
@TheNewbieWoodworker 3 жыл бұрын
Find something that'll fit based on thickness and OD (don't go over on these two dimensions - less is better than "it won't fit"). Then if you have options, you can get the longest one in that size (if you want a tight spring), or a shorter one if you prefer. I know it takes a while to do the searching, but there aren't many options.

It's possible I drew inspiration from someone else's thumbnail (I don't really remember), but this one is all mine. That's my hand and my drill press. I cut out my garage in the background and added a fake wood background, which came from a stock image included with Final Cut Pro X, so if it's the same background as someone else, it just means they used the same graphic. I admit that I got the "Updated" graphic from a Google image search, so that could easily be the same as someone else's. But trust me, this one is mine. I enjoy making thumbnails, so I wouldn't even think of using someone else's.

Did I miss it or was never mentioned that if the hook is engaged into a slot on the outside of the shell, it's a 50-50 chance that somebody is going to put the spring in backwards and it'll pull the chuck down instead of up, and let's see you take that spring out and turn it around. And if you are assuming that people can't replace a spring without cutting off one of their fingers, you should be drowned in a toilet.

I'm trying, believe me. Everything I do leads to 5 steps down another rabbit trail. It's driving me crazy! 😄As for why your old stuff doesn't break? You know the answer.
