The blame for the school concrete scandal has landed right at the Prime Minister's feet - after a former civil servant from the Department for Education revealed it was Chancellor Sunak that cut the funding for rebuilding schools five years ago.
But it's his Education Secretary - Gillian Keegan - who's conducting the political heat today after a sweary off-mic rant which she is almost certainly now regretting. In fact she gave a subsequent apology ON mic.
The News Agents are back - yes all three - asking what it means for our children's education - and how damaging it is to the Sunak government. And as Keir Starmer shuffles his top team, we ask what it tells us about Labour's priorities a year out from an election.

Local Governments have no responsibility anything to do with academies or free schools. The responsibility was passed to the Secretary of State for Education. These schools were given the buildings previously owned by, and the responsibility of, the LEAs - no longer.

The first thing Tories did when coming into power is cut taxes for the rich. So if they're saying there wasn't enough money after Labour to ensure school maintenance was adequately expensed, then they need to explain why they gave the rich their tax giveaway - the abolition of the banker bonus tax, the abolition of the 50p tax rate, the slashing of the corporation tax...

Because the uk media is run, in the main, by people who benefit from having the Tories in Government, so why would they bite the hand that feeds them. The BBC is regularly slated for being "TOO BALANCED" and allowing tor apologists to have a say anytime there is a story that is in any way negative to the tories. What we need to remember, it is the government who appoint the upper echelons of power at the BBC. So what chance is there when the press, is generally, owned by tory cronies. Report the news, be balanced by telling the facts and not the spin, and stop sensationalising things that are not important.

Meanwhile Sunak donates over £100,000 to his old private school of Winchester College in 2022 which has fees of £43,335 per year, state schools are given on average £7,460 per pupil and I've not noticed a state school in his constituency getting a £100,000 donation from the PM. Let's not forget he's collecting around £11.5m per year 'Blood Money' in share dividends from Infosys his father in laws company which still to this day trades and does significant business in Russia despite the PM telling UK press that this was due to cease in April 2022. That is so true about the corporate interest in Labour reviving to levels not seen since 2010. What will also come back to Labour is corporate donations, which over the last 13 years have been going to the Tories. What will happen to Labour's plans for a 'fairer greener future' when major oil and gas corporations start writing cheques to Labour.

This is the first time i have watched The News Agents, and i am so glad i did. Brilliant. I am so fed up with the daily diet of trivia and nonsense from the BBC news...it is so refreshing to find excellent news coverage again. This will be my news station from now on.

Why did we kick-off with 'sir' Frank Spencer? Very informative podcast. Pursuing building academies/free schools in Tory voter strongholds, rather than investing in the whole country's education infrastructure for all children, was an ideological decision. I remember Sunak, in that garden with his Tory constituents, saying on camera that he would divert money from working class areas to affluent Tory constituencies if he becomes PM.

Maybe we should do away with the charity status for public schools & start taxing them. There may be some extra funds available to help pay for school repairs

I am disappointed that , on this matter , the media has not used Structural /Construction professionals to explain the issue. In the '70s lots of schools had "High Alumina Cement" which caused closures etc. while remedial works done . I used to inspect school infrastructure and it was quite depressing, badly run.

I saw these figures quoted elsewhere and checked them. There are roughly 20,000 publicly funded (state) schools in the UK. At a replacement rate of 50 schools per year, my state education tells me that it will take around 400 years to replace them all. What happened to Sunak's legendary (in his own mind) maths ability?

« Easier to get money for new schools » is a typical symptom of over-centralisation. One of the chronic problems that brought down the Soviet Union.
