This episode is like the personification of what makes LOST so great. An extremely non-sensical out there, but fun, science fiction concept, centered around hard core character development and relationships. It's a testament that no matter how weird LOST gets, it always anchors it with its characters in such a beautiful way. I love this show.

Copycats is a strong word but many shows tried to replicate the sci-fi/mystery/adventure ensemble show with built-in longevity. So Desmond's backstory goes: He wanted to be a doctor, but didn't graduate, because he had to support his family. He was engaged to marry a woman name Ruth, but got drunk and chickened out of the wedding. Joined a monastery instead and took a vow of silence. Ruth's brother tracked him down and attacked him. Then he got kicked out of the monastery after getting drunk on their wine. Met Penny and dated her for two years. Penny moved into his flat. He approached her father Charles Widmore to ask permission to marry Penny, but got rejected. Went to buy a ring, but changed his mind. - Met Ms Hawking at the jeweler's, who told him he's destined to go to the island, not marry Penny. (retroactive) Took a photo with Penny, but broke up with her, believing she deserved better. Joined the Royal Scots Regiment instead. - Went to Oxford to meet with Daniel Faraday. (retroactive) - Got Penny's new address from her father and asked her for her new number. (retroactive) Got kicked out of the Royal Scots Regiment and dishonourably discharged for not following orders. Served time at a military prison as a result. After being released, he discovered the letters he sent Penny while inside were all intercepted by Charles Widmore. He went to America to enter Widmore's round-the-world sailing race to prove his worth and get his honour back. There he met Libby at a cafe, who decided to give him her late husband's sailboat, the Elizabeth. He was confronted by Penny, now engaged to someone else, while training at a stadium. Then met Jack by chance. Whilst sailing in the Pacific, he hit a storm and was washed up on the island. Kelvin Inman brought him to the Swan hatch and he lived there pushing the button for three years. He killed Kelvin after discovering he was planning to escape on the Elizabeth. Missed the button, causing the plane crash. Believed the world had ended because he missed the button and was going to kill himself, until he heard Locke outside.

In that final phone call scene one of the things Desmond says to Penny is "You believed me." After watching the series a few times I'm noticing that that is a running theme. Off the top of my head, in "Numbers" Hurley was so relieved that Rousseau believed him about being cursed. Shannon always needed someone to just believe in her. And there are a few more important examples from future episodes that we can't talk about here...

TV at its best. I could write a book about how much I love Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond) in this series. Whenever the writers needed him to do some serious heavy lifting, he stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park. There are no bad Desmond episodes, there are no "meh" Desmond episodes, there are only great Desmond episodes. That's largely because of the writing, of course, but Cusick was clutch af. It's especially impressive when you consider the fact that he (and the entire cast) didn't know where things were going with the plot, sometimes didn't know much more than the viewers. Mad props to Sonya Walger (Penny) as well. She only gets a few minutes in this episode, but holy hell does she make the most of it. Even just that little "Yeah, yeah, that's better" @ 19:05 -- that melts my heart every time.

Also, the fact that she kept her number for 8 years, even tough she was to get married after that, and living in America. Also, How the showed her on her house in this episode, but few hours from that, she was in a boat to rescue them, and really close to the Island (she took so much time since the end of aeason 2, when she tracks the Island, to leave to the Island (after desmonds call)... There is a lot of problems.

@@heitorabdias2212 I'm sure she was living in london, not america (he said it's a london number plus the ringing tone is british - I'm british) Also I think the fact she kept her number the same is intentional since Desmond asked her to. Even though she wants to be sensible and asks Desmond to leave, there's still a part of her that loves him which you can see in her face. Maybe a part of her hoped that Desmond would call. He does say 'you believed me, you still care about me'. You also have to remember the reason why Desmond ended the relationship - partly because of Emily but also because of Penny's father. By the time Desmond and Penny reunite Penny's relationship with her father has clearly broken down and I sort of assumed that Penny figured out he had something to do with the things that had happened (if I remember rightly it was her father who told Desmond to do the trip on the boat which led to him getting stuck on the Island). Also I think it's implied she split up from whoever she was meant to get married to. Ultimately Desmond broke her heart and she still loved him, so it's a story about true love. I dont think that part of it is inconsistent.

I've left a similar comment on other reaction channels but - Daniel says he wants to "unstick Eloise in time." The phrase "unstuck in time" is from the novel Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. The main character, Billy Pilgrim, jumps back and forth in time to different times in his life. (And Desmond's army pal is named 'Billy'.) From the beginning of the book: "Listen: Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time. Billy has gone to sleep a senile widower and awakened on his wedding day. He has walked through a door in 1955 and come out another one in 1941. He has gone back through that door to find himself in 1963. He has seen his birth and death many times, he says, and pays random visits to all the events in between."

Two weeks ago. That was when I watched this reaction video from you guys. Since then I've watched it two more times JUST to see if it would still make me cry that close to each viewing. I just watched it now and fucking A, still got three tears running down my face. I said Hannibal's Mizumono was the best hour of television, but I think this is the best scene in all of television and hands down the greatest love story ever told.

I watch a lot of TV and this is still my #1 TV episode ever. I still get goosebumps watching the last Des/Penny scene, Losties like me still post this scene every christmas eve on their social media ❤

LOST is the reason so many shows since it have used non-linear storytelling but it never gets the credit it deserves for literally changing the landscape of television.

I'm at my first Lost rewatch and I remember caring a lot about Jack and Kate, but boy was I wrong. "All we really need is one person who truly loves us".

The after episode discussion about whether or not you have a constant reminded me of one time when they were reading fan mail on the old Tonight Show (with Johnny Carson). One letter said, "I was born on the same day that the first episode of the Tonight Show aired. Does that mean if you go off the air I will die?" LOL.

In an earlier episode Daniel couldn't remember the ordering of cards. That will come into play later, and also lead to the answer of why he doesn't remember Des's visit in the past.

I got my niece into watching this show. She has been enjoying it and I told her, when you get to the Constant, I want to watch it with you. She is an emotional person and I wanted to see her reaction. At this part she was crying so much. She had to watch it like 5 times to stop crying. It was precious seeing her reaction.
