Branford Marsalis gets plenty, no worries- he is a very well respected. If you listen to the rest of this album, you can hear more of him, and how much fun he and Sting had creating songs together (along with some other musical geniuses). I know exactly what you mean. A lot of the stuff that comes out is processed to death and just rubbish in my ears and/or is more about an artist's image than sound. Some music is definitely decent but I don't think this type of musicality that was abundant in the charts from the 60s till the 90s will have a resurgence in the foreseeable future...
@GorditoCrunch3437 жыл бұрын
The fact that it took this long for a label like Frontiers Records to step up and actually bring back some classic rock/pop back to the West proves that the industry is permanently crippled. Music has been homogenized and cheapened to hell and back, and the general consumers have simply lapped it up without any regard for musicianship. It's just a crowd mentality that sadly persists to this very day. Very disheartening.
@michaelarcher15777 жыл бұрын
Music now involves tons and tons of marketing, as was discovered in the 80's or maybe even before. Cyndi Lauper had one great PR machine behind her for the time, but she also put out great music. Now, all you need is a great PR machine to succeed which is why shitty rap artists are a dime a dozen. They all make use of the "G.O.A.T." mentality to make themselves known. And the general consensus for music nowadays is that people think it's processed shit, they just don't bother to broaden their horizons and *seek out* music rather than let it fall into their lap. Crowd mentality will never get old, and good musicians must know how to work that crowd to their advantage, just like how punk rock became a lifestyle. And music is evolving, going through a shitty phase. I look forward to music in the future.

The elderly English gent in the video was Quentin Crisp, who suffered a lot of ignorance and was victimized, but never vengeful, only polite. He was an openly gay man, and the author of The Naked Civil Servant, among other books; he was often reviled and persecuted as a young man, and he moved to NYC for his older years. I worked for his literary agent and had the pleasure of meeting him once and talking with him on the phone many times.

One of the best songs ever written. Elegance, style, jazz, saxophone, lyrics, black and white video. I always ask myself how is it possible to make a song with sophisticated melody like this, when there is a melody inside other melodies and in the end we have a masterpiece.Sting has a total musical taste , his songs are the best, Fields of gold, Seven days, When we dance, It’s probably me, Shape of my heart, They dance alone, Roxanne. And of course there are so much more. We can count and count. I love him, his music stays with me during all my life.

My english teacher played this song in class and we worked about it. I wanted to share what she told us "Sting dedicated his song ''Englishman in New York'' to Quentin Crisp. You can see him in the song video clip. In late 1986 Sting visited Crisp in his apartment and was told over dinner - and the next three days - what life had been like for a homosexual man in the largely homophobic Great Britain of the 1920s to the 1960s. Sting was both shocked and fascinated and decided to write this song. It includes the lines: It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile, Be yourself no matter what they say." It makes me feel safe to know this fact
