The thing that amazes me the most about Chomsky is his amazing capacity for recall i.e. his memory of detail is truly astounding especially at his age. He's a human encyclopedia.

This is how I felt for Christopher Hitchens as well. Always knew such an obscure piece of knowledge that seemed like it was going off on a tangent, but he would always have a profound point. But I would say Hitchens was a better orator. Chomsky is certainly a walking encyclopedia, but I feel Hitchens was a walking encyclopedia and thesaurus. These guys are special. No doubt about it. So well studied, well versed, and have wisdom that went along with their knowledge downloads onto their audiences.

Yeah but that's only part of the equation. Interviews with Chomsky only give Chomsky's view points. Nobody is there to break down his mistakes or add alternative facts counter to Chomsky's. The first question I'd like Chomsky to answer is, what gives anyone the right to run any country? That's in response to Chomsky's what gives America the right to interfere with another country? In Venezuela, for instance, what gives Maduro the right to control Venezuela? Instead of blaming Maduro for bad policies he blames America for interfering. How does Chomsky rectify Maduro's poor leadership? The answer seems to be let it fester.

This is an aside, but I’m so happy your sound engineer knows how to record Chomsky in his age. As a musician it can be so frustrating on other platforms to hear someone throw up a mic with standard settings on this wonderful but soft-spoken man. The noise floor and plosives shoot through the roof! Yes! SM7b with the highs rolled off! Ok I’m stopping my sound rant there.
@Paulyb7
@Paulyb7 4 жыл бұрын
@thomas thompson your compression and EQ settings will handle a great deal of the stuff Chris is referring to, but reverb and delay (used with restraint) are other basic tools you can use to give depth and body to a vocal mix. The straight signal from microphone to DAW isn't usually going to sound the way you'd like it to sound in its final form, especially with someone who has lots of vocal quirks (speaking of myself in particular, my voice tends to need de-essing, EQ-work to even out nasality, etc). And before you even get to recording, the gear you use and how you setup the gear in the room you're recording in is probably the most important aspect of a recording. The world of sound recording is so much fun and you'll never run out of things to learn!
@johnchristopher3032

@nmeunier Fear is a feeling, it does not need a sound justification. If people believe they are under attack, or will be attacked, they will behave that way, even if there is no real reason to believe. The people of Sparta were known to carry this sort of paranoia, as well. For example, they were reluctant to send their forces too far from home. Even when the risk was low and the reward was high, they were held back by this deep feeling that someone would come to take back this 'stolen' land. So they stayed home, always training and preparing for battle.

If it seems like Chomsky is talking over Krauss sometimes I think it may be partly an issue of his hearing. Normally he wouldn't do that. I took a class from him last year (it was amazing!) and he really had difficulty hearing some of the questions from the class. Considering he just had his 91st birthday on 12/7 he's doing amazingly well!

@Dog Ma So are you saying that Chomsky's knowledge of history, rights, politics, etc. with referances to articles by professionals on the subject, is made up? By facts I mean his referances to books and articles, and by reality I mean his recollection and knowledge of history. Could you maybe give some examples on what you don't agree with in this video? I mean, I don't claim to agree with everything in the video. I'm for example sceptic to what Chomsky said about windows and china. That doesn't mean that he didn't use facts and reality in what he said..

Currency itself is a lie and used to enslave people. Abraham Lincoln said minimum wage labor is the same as slavery. Who? No, why don't you instead ask how many people are homeless, how many children are hungry, how outrageous costs of healthcare and prescription drugs are, how the majority of the wealth goes to the top of the people in this PLUTOCRACY.

@Bryzz Lull What have they influenced? Elections. Policies. Look at private ownership of the internet, which was developed by the government with tax-payer money! That is the influence. It influences a massive percentage of what people desire. Look at advertising today. Look at what is being done with the internet. Look at the hundreds of commercials of lawsuits about different corporations that knew very well that their products were harmful or even deadly. Look at Johnson and Johnson with the talcum powder. People are born into massive amounts of debt that simply isn't going to be paid back, when the massively wealthy get to sit around on gilded couches and drink thousand dollar wines. Oh yes, this must be saved! The reality is, policies every day are written not for the betterment of the people but specifically for the rich, and psychologists are hired to meticulously craft products and advertisements which brainwash people effectively. It is a massively tangled ball of yarn, and that is what you get with this form of capitalism. Not capitalism in general, for American capitalism is its own breed. There are no rules. Corporations make the rules, and if you disagree... you can join the largest prison population in the world... that's where they will hold you, or you will end up on the streets, maybe to die in a gutter. Who cares? Very few, especially not the rich.

I've read the Ellsberg book Chomsky references at 1:46 and I highly recommend it. Also, the book by Scott Atran he refers to earlier is called Talking to the Enemy, also an amazing book, Atran went into places like Lebanon and the West Bank and talked to potential terrorists and the communities that support them and what he found was (as Chomsky alluded to) they were primarily motivated not by religion but by the same things that would motivate anyone: that their friends and loved ones had been murdered, maimed, and tortured by the US and US puppet forces. Another excellent book along the same lines is Dying to Win: The Logic of Suicide Terrorism by Robert Pape from the University of Chicago, very scholarly and dispassionate statistical analysis of terrorism and its causes. Interestingly, Pape's work was primarily supported by the DOD under Bush and Rumsfeld. I wonder what they thought of his results. Although, that's really not all that unusual, the DOD and the CIA often have a good understanding of what is really going on, it's just that those kinds of analysis (e.g., the Pentagon Papers) are meant for internal use not for the general public.

the Brazilian social media campaign stunned him and yet he thinks nothing of the Russian meddling in our elections. he's also dead wrong on Islamic terror. outside of these two issues I loved everything else he said and found him to be profoundly insightful.

Noam is like a statue of intelligence. He sees history like it were a rainbow of shifting patterns, always changing but the same in its essential form. He knits together the nagging of the left with the oppression of the right and the resulting friction. He is calm like the center of a hurricane, throwing out words which make you at once say, "ahh, now I see the truth", and, "holy shit, we've got to do something about this." All the while he looks back at history, he predicts the future without even trying. In other words, some things never change.

also this interview is a gem. ive been trying to pace the incidences of my mindblownness, and its become increasingly hard for things to mindblow me that are not just pure academic lengthly research and "liturgy" (I wish i could understand turing's computational incompleteness paper but one go was definitely not enough.)...the pure candence that mr. chomsky speaks shows his confidence from his younger days, but also the depth and tidiness of his research (for example him reading airplane bombing records). and always have in mind the masses as well...

I agree with other comments that this is one of the best interviews with Chomsky for a long time, and Chomsky gets his views across very well here. Lawrence's 'sympathetic slightly critical' interviewing approach brings out the best in Chomsky's style of discourse. He is challenged gently but not shouted down, cut off or interrupted allowing the depth and breadth of his views to emerge as well as their internal consistency and, I would say, logic.

The thing that impresses me the most about Chomsky (and there are many things on that list) is his lack of cynicism. He never seems to despair of people. Even when talking of these same dreary old establishment stances against student protests (and we’re seeing it again right now actually) happen again and again and people still fall for it, he doesn’t get cynical and blame people. Most of us can’t do that. By the time we’re 30 we’ve decided the average person is pond life and just give up on politics. It’s a tremendous quality in a person to never really ‘get old’ in this way.
