Acrylic Pouring Blooms Technique Inspirational Tutorial Video.
paint pouring, the painted dreamer, abstract fluid art, shelee art style, no silicone, fluid acrylics, acrylic pouring techniques, fluid art tutorials, abstract acrylic pouring Art, Pour Painting, fluid painting, house paint art, swipes, blooms, US floetrol pouring medium, US floetrol cell activator, blooms on a budget.
In this video I wanted to experiment with US floetrol and use it as my pouring medium for the blooms as well as how I swipe with both the Aussie cell activator and a US floetrol cell activator to see how everything worked together. I hope this video is helpful and inspiring for you and you enjoy watching this half as much as I enjoyed creating it!
A lot of what you see being created on my channel when ready will end up in my Etsy store. Some pieces if they translate well to digital will also make it to my RedBubble, Society6 & Spring shops so if you see a design you like please check out my links below.👇🏻😊💜

Girlfriend, you are so much fun! I loved everything. I always thought the Australian Floetrol made more cells but you proved that wrong. It's fun experimenting with you. Your curly-Qs are excellent, as always. I look forward to future teaching videos! You're the best!💜💜💜

Aww thank you Joetta, I appreciate that! 🤗 I was always under that impression too but then my brain was like no there has to be other things that can make cool cells like that too it can’t just be Australian floetrol haha! I’m aiming to prove that wrong now so we all have different options instead of just being limited to one thing. I’m so glad you enjoyed it! 🥰

Amazing how your experiments worked out so beautifully. This was a whole lotta fun. I don't do this kinda painting, but I love learning about it. You explained your "pillow" process so well. Who would have thought that untinted house paint wouldn't be available in some places? The way the Flotrol's worked was wonderful. The cells are phenomenal. That is what makes fluid art so special. Getting those cells. Each one of these five paintings is unique and extraordinary. Even the two tiles you started with. Your painting is different from the other online artists. It is more complex, probably because of the paint colors you choose. But also, you don't add the "sparkles" to all of the paints. Not that it's bad. It looks good in some painting. But the contrast of pure color with the mica infused paint is exciting. The blue green stands out from the other colors and almost looks like it's trying to peek around the orange and purple. Kinda cute. There are other fluid artists that I follow. A lot of their work is also gorgeous. But you and one other in this media knows when to stop. I can't tell you how many times I have yelled at my computer, "Stop, Stop, you're losing all of the good stuff. Knowing when to stop is just as important as blending the paint, and getting the correct viscosity. All of that of course has to do with confidence, experience, and something mysterious that can't be explained. I love your art, Jodi. Thank you.

Aww thank you so so much for saying that Lissanne 🤗 I’m so glad you enjoyed this experiment, it was a lot of fun and I really want everyone to be able to do this no matter where they are or what ingredients they have there has to be a way. Me personally I can’t do just all pigments or bling it’s too much I like the contrast of paint and mica and sometimes being real subtle with it. This floetrol really dries matte but there’s something about the way the mica in that blue green sparkles from it, I just love it so I totally see what you see my friend! 😃🤗💜

@@ThePaintedDreamer Well, thank you. I agree with what you've said. I love how you teach, it's amazing. This experiment has created a great balance, like you said of pigments and bling. I can't wait for whats next. p.s. I forgot to tell you, that when I watch your videos, I have never once said, Stop,stop. You know when to quit. I admire your confidence.

I've been watching you for I think about 2 years and you stand out from the others because you go into detail on how you mix your paint, and your techniques. Not to say the others don't (because they do it beautiful work as well and I have learned from them also) but you do an exceptional job of teaching and showing what you do, to help the rest of us. Your work is always beautiful and thank you very much for sharing and teaching. My name is Debbie I'm Studio kinsey. I started painting this kind of art right as covid hit. Never heard of it before but I needed to do something to not go crazy with everything that was going on in the world. I used to paint sceneries back when I was in high school and forgot how therapeutic painting is. I walk into my studio and I stop worrying about everything. I have yet to make a video cuz I'm a huge introvert , very shy so I'm just trying to get my nerve up to doing it one day. I am on Etsy (www.Etsy.com/shop/Studiokinsey) I do believe my paintings are good but sometimes I doubt myself because I'm not getting hundreds of sales and of course when I ask my husband he'll say they're beautiful but how could you say they are ugly lol. But Etsy so hit and miss and really can't make any money (I obviously can't even put a dent on supplies I need because of how little I little I'm seen on Etsy.. But thank you so much for what you do because it helps me not only with my art but to get out of my head. Thank you again. Debbie Kinsey Studio Kinsey

Experiments! Yay! All came out beautiful! I recently saw an artist who used American floetrol and acrylic ink only as a CA. Came out beautiful. I'll look her up and I'll post for you in another comment. On another note, when swiping using a tool on a smaller canvas lay your knife down in the middle and swipe outwards. After spinning, the bulk of your swipe should still be in the middle.

Brilliant! I thank you again for your wonderful experimentation and for so generously passing it along. It just so happens that yesterday, despairing of my loopy blooms, I decided to thin my precious bloom colors with floetrol and do a swipe on a house paint base and it (so far; see how it dries) worked nicely. I live in central France and the ingredients recommended in Shelee's course are hard to find and terribly pricey. I, of course - being a bit of a mad scientist myself - do pay the ungodly prices and wait with baited breath for the post lady to arrive with my 'cadeaux', 'gifts'. For example: Amazon U.S. has not had Minwax gloss varnish for a while which I can buy for @ $18 per quart plus $12 shipping so I bought a can on Amazon France. It arrived two days ago. It never occurred to me that for $44 I would have ordered only an 8oz can. U.S. floetrol would cost around $40 per quart if I bought it here so buying 2 quarts for $23 + $20 shipping from the U.S. is still considerably better value. Life is a fluid experiment though and I soldier on! Sorry for the waffling.

You’re welcome Lulu and thank you so much! I’m glad I’ve been able to help somewhat. I know it’s a challenge getting things where you are but the fact that you like to experiment you can find just what’s right for you. Do you have access to Owatrol floetrol? I plan to get some myself to test similar to what I did here but I know Erica Hughes as tested it and used it on her channel for blooms and fluid art. Maybe that’s an option. You could also use an artist grade clear gloss water based polyurethane varnish that may be easier to find where you are too. Just some ideas to further poke the mad scientist in you 😉💜💜

@@ThePaintedDreamer Thank you for getting back to me Jodie. I have used Owetrol, which I thought was from the Netherlands but it is actually made here in France. It is very thick and juicy. Costs @ $20 per liter. I watched Canella Ciraco, video #345, do a comparison between Ozzie, Flood and Owetrol for her Dutch Pour technique and she had to thin the Owetrol quite a bit. The results were pretty amazing. I have tried local high-end gloss varnishes in my mix as well as Josonja, Minwax and some other artist-grade makes. Have just ordered Brite Tone as recommended by Jen Neil and like the fact that it is low VOC and non toxic. For all the rave reviews of Josonja I find it's main advantage is that you can smell your 'orphan mystery paints' and know if Josonja is in it because it stinks! I will check out Erica's channel to see her in action with Owetrol. Let's stay in touch. Thank you again.

I wanted to share with you a pouring medium that I learned from Erica Hughes’s (Hughes’ ? - I never know when to use the apostrophe w/out the extra S) 🤪 She uses a mix of 75% Floetral (I think U.S., though she’s in Ireland) and 25% Golden Reg Gel Gloss. I’ve been using it a lot for different techniques and it’s thicker than just reg Floetral and paint and it doesn’t dull it out. I haven’t tried it with the house paint pillow but I’ve used it in the same technique using all acrylics and Aus Flo CA and it turned out beautiful and shiny before resin or varnish. Thank you so much for sharing!! I have been working on the bloom technique and the timing couldn't be more perfect. You mention during your first go that the cell activator was dissipating. What would make it do that? I have had that happen before and can't figure out why (I have only used US Floetrol in my CA, btw). Do you think a little US Floetrol in the pillow would help prevent the little white popup cells? Also, and last question I promise ;), what purpose does the acrylic ink serve in your US Floetrol recipe?
@ThePaintedDreamer
@ThePaintedDreamer 2 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome Melinda, I’m glad it will help 🤗. Yes that first one I used the Aussie cell activator which was a bit thinner and that in conjunction with the thinner mix of my other colors the CA was sinking a bit more. I think thickening up the CA would do the trick. The second one with the US floetrol CA it was a touch thicker and didn’t really do that so. Those white cells are going to happen especially with house paint as a base maybe try an acrylic base paint if you want it doesn’t have the buoyancy of house paint so blooms don’t pop up as easily and may get stuck but it’ll still work. The ink helps to thin the mixture as well as give it more of the color but if you don’t have it you can just use a little bit of distilled water. Hope this helps! 💜

It sounds like your pillow is a bit thicker. I notice that when I use the PPG in the winter, compared to the Glidden satin I use that one runs a little thinner. Right now the PPG is thinner for me because it’s hot as heck here lol but I think it’s probably your pillow and also how you are blowing out. I know I need to blow hard (that just sounds wrong 🤣) when I’m using the PPG in winter so it may be a little bit of both. You can try thinning your pillow out a little with GAC 800 or some US floetrol, experiment with that and see how it works. 🤗

🤔 hmmm I’m not sure if that would help since it’s the interaction of the house paint with the floetrol that kind of makes those cloud cells. I like them just not in the middle of my bloom haha! Or you could try a different type of base altogether more like in other techniques using a mix of floetrol & paint for your base and then your pm/ca etc. Me though I love house paint too much and how buoyant it is. 🤗

Doesn't have to be yours. And your explanation of the PM house paint etc. Thank you. Where did you get your spinner? As well as your tub it's in? How do you clean it? @ThePaintedDreamer 2 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome Sandie, I’m so glad it helps! Believe me I know about the cost, first hand haha! But there are ways to do this more economically and this is definitely one of them 🤗. It’s true, there’s a lot that can work out there, it doesn’t necessarily need to be the brands I use as long as you understand the fundamentals of each component and what role they play. I’m still exploring and experimenting myself but this whole undertaking of mine was originally because we didn’t know what worked well here in the US for the blooms compared to Australian brands that this technique was founded on. Now it’s widely known but the experimenter in me hasn’t left the building and now I want to push it and see what else can be used. My spinner came from Jessica Winterstrom, she makes them and sells them on her site, link is below in the description box if you want to see more about it. The tub it’s in is a puppy pool I got on Amazon (link is in my Amazon Storefront) and I just line it with a plastic mattress pad liner I get from the dollar tree. The paint just peels right out but eventually will start tearing and I have to just replace the liner. The US floetrol isn’t made up the same way as the Australian so some additional ingredients are added to get it to mimic the Australian. The glue helps with stretchiness and the distilled water helps to thin it a little. Hope this helps 💜

I think it depends what you’ll be doing with it, meaning what technique. If you’ll be doing more of a swipe you could probably get away with a heavier body paint, I’d say test it out and see how it goes for you and what you want to accomplish. This US floetrol experiment ended up being a 4 part series and the last video (194) I used the floetrol for everything so that may answer your question as well. You do want something that will move though as if it’s too thick your paint won’t move to stretch it out. But experiment and see what happens.

That behr 3300 does dry really nicely, you can try thinning with some floetrol but just know that floetrol is really matte so it’ll flatten your gloss up a bit. You can try changing your ratio up also untinted base to varnish even going 1:1 if it’s really thick. Don’t mix a big batch though just a small tester to see how it works out and definitely stick to more fluid paints to mix in. You can add more of your PM mix to your paint mixture to try to help thin it out but if it’s already too thick that may not help. See what works for you with what you have. Try anything once, if it doesn’t work well then you know 🤗

Per your advice, I have stopped watching dozens of artists and trying to incorporate bits and pieces into one pour. This video was incredibly helpful, but just for clarification, I have every product you talked about in some brand, except AU Floetrol. 2 different Clear paint bases, polyacrylic, & polyurethane (water based) wood conditioner, glue all , and colored paint of all kinds. One thing still confuses me. Pillow paint…. What exactly does that mean, it’s it paint straight from the can that is already white? Is it a tube paint mixed with “house paint” medium? Or any combo of them? I live in a very small town, and I have to get substitutes, but they are worthless and expensive all at the same time if you don’t understand the use. Thanks again for a great video.
@ThePaintedDreamer
@ThePaintedDreamer 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Melissa 🤗 the pillow paint is the white base you see me put on first, it’s your base paint that floats all your other colors mixed with your pouring medium and your cell activator. For the blooms you do want it springy and stretchy so house paint is usually used for this. The house paint you want is a low sheen (satin or eggshell, NOT flat) white interior wall paint. I don’t add anything to any that I use, I use them straight from the can. This US floetrol experiment series I did recently the last video in the series I did mix up white acrylic paint with US floetrol and used that as my pillow instead to show it could be done but again it’s not as springy or stretchy as house paint. Not all house paint works well for your pillow some work better than others so I’ve had to test a lot before I landed on the ones I use in my videos here. If you don’t have those brands and want to use something different I suggest just buying a quart to try out to see how you like it or try the acrylic paint/floetrol route to see how that works for you as well. Hope this helps 🤗

I have purchased some house paint (black and white) but they were gloss it high gloss. I’m hoping this is the problem. But knowing that paint right from the can is what is used is a great relief. I don’t have access to anything locally, I have to order from several different places, so if I know what’s used, then I won’t second guess everything I do, and just worry about the consistency and learning patients…. I thank you so very much!

You got pretty good results, but where you messed up is using house paint as a pillow that's the reason you will always get those cloud cells with this recipe you have to mix your own pillow paint and the normal pouring ratios with this recipe are 10 parts American floetrol to 1 part paint u use the same recipe for the pillow and paint and yes you can still get great cell reaction using floetrol as a medium but I honestly was never happy with the results until I found the house paint recipe but I'm glad you did this it looked like you had fun playing around and maybe you will want to try again making your pillow with the floetrol have fun lol

No, I didn’t mess up using house paint, it’s what I wanted to use with this experiment and I knew that interaction would probably happen, where I messed up was using my straw in the middle to bring up some white to make it happen. I don’t mind it in swipes, just not in the middle of my bloom. I’ve tried the paint and floetrol for pillow some videos back and it worked ok but I didn’t like the feel of it so it’s not something I would normally use as I like the buoyancy of house paint but it’s personal preference really.

@@ThePaintedDreamer oh okay Hun I thought you were trying to do the original floetrol recipe that's why I said that I thought you just might had not known to avoid those types of interactions you had to use the floetrol as a pillow as well I used it for almost a year or so and I was very unhappy with it I also much prefer the house paint recipe I believe the results are much better than anything Ive used or seen used in the past I'm not against anyone else trying these recipes or using them it's like you said it's personal preference. I'm sorry if that came across wrong I didn't mean it in a negative way just thought you hadnt used it before as a medium in general and wanted to make sure you knew the right information to help others as well as yourself.
