From an interview with Rick Priestley on Realm of Chaos80's: "Bryan (Ansell) always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say - he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company - things move on!"

GW has put themselves in an awkward spot where they don't have the personality and community feel of a more personable/smaller company but also don't have the feeling of large production and quality control of a larger corporate enterprise, so a lot of discontent probably comes from this weird middle ground. Nobody knows what to expect from GW, but people know what to expect from a content creator or Amazon, so everyone ends up disappointed or miffed.

Unfortunately this is an industry wide issue. I've done freelance sculpting for over 5 years and apart from getting my name on the front of an obscure kickstarter boardgame, I've very rarely, if ever, gotten direct credit for my pieces. Edit: Actually I should shout out Mierce Miniatures. They have the artists credited right at the top of every model listing on their store site.

I miss having the sculptors' names on the box set. I'd always look for Seb Perbet's orcs and Trish Morrison's monsters, I loved chasing a specific artist's work. It was a great drive for me growing up.

Not crediting your artists is a great way to make sure your pool of talent coming in is as small as humanly possible. I work in animation and I can't even imagine a scenario where my name wouldn't appear at the end of an episode I had a hand in. Those credits allows us to mark our participation in productions on sites like IMDB, etc because they cross reference summited information directly from that stuff. Having an extensive list of credits we can point to also allows us to skip some of the hoops we'd normally have to jump through when first entering the industry (when you have shows you can point to as a reference for work you're less likely to have to use up all of your free time working on unpaid animation tests). All in all I don't see how they're gonna pull in animation talent to work with them with that sort of company standard.

@@YaBoiVD I've had some managers over the years that did everything possible to prevent staff credit/development etc so nobody would ever leave. They had the biggest turn over rate in the section because it was a bad environment so nobody stuck around, while the team that had the most staff development still has most of their people to this day because its a good team to work in.

I always thought the ‘crediting issue’ started before the Duncan/Peachy exit. I had the impression that the business (GW) wanted to kill name recognition, as there was a perception that Warlord had benefitted from this when it was setup and afterwards. (Stallard, Sawyer, Priestly, Perry Twins, Chambers.)

Only hands is a terrible idea, what GW should have done is defended Matt Ward, credited everyone and I guess pay Duncan what he was worth!

I'm not sure if they needed to "defend" Ward, or if what they really needed was to make sure he is fair and balanced in his representation of the various factions. If my memories serves me correctly. I do believe his codices were actually some of the best of the time from a gameplay point of view. It just his lore excesses that become meme's that resulted in problems.

@@jamesespinosa690 unfortunately your memory doesn’t serve you. His lore was copied largely from the previous space marines codecs and them from the original ultramarines codex by Rick Priestly.

@@MariusGage I think you may misunderstand my comment. And I am totally aware that 95% of the lore in the codex is copied from pre-existing editions. I think if you reread my comment you should find that I'm am not complimenting his "contributions" to the lore. I think his fluff was bad. But his crunch was good. His Blood Angel codex may be the best one they've ever had. His Grey Knights book was great.

I think a lot of the hate/criticism that is thrown at GW often comes from the fact that people see them as a faceless corporation that are overprotective of their product and very standoffish toward their audience. People often forget about all of the real people that are behind Warhammer. I can't really blame people for feeling that way either because we're never given a reason not to. It would be great to see GW open up a bit more and show what's going on behind the curtain a little bit. Put faces to the Eavy Metal team etc. It would not only help GW's reputation to credit their staff but would help tremendously with making GW seem more relatable and human. There are some fantastic artists working for GW but I only discover them after they've left the company, like Infernal Brush (Dave Perryman) for example. When I got into the hobby around 1998 GW seemed like a small friendly hobby company run by artists and creatives that were passionate about their product and a lot of that vibe seems to be missing nowadays. It's not like the old days when people like John Blanche, Gav Thorpe, Andy Chambers, Kev Adams, Bob Naismith, the Perry twins, Juan Diaz etc. were known and respected by the fans.

Totally agree. I do love seeing the people behind the magic mirror, and I understand that they aren't just paying the price of the plastic, but also the artists and all the other essential processes behind the scenes. Which is why I've never been keen on folks just coming in with "basically that", because in my mind those folks are trampling on the 90% of the work that generated those kits to begin with. Though, I feel the bigger issue is a societal one. We are encouraged from birth to grave to be liar's, by our peers, our politicians and by people who want wealth. I kind of feel that all bleeds down to make a society that by it's nature is fundamentally squeed and is looking for simple answers to complex problems. As such, I always have reason to question my first emotional response, and likewise more trenchancy would be awesome.

GW is managed by out of touch businessmen in their 60's. An old friend of mine used to be a store manager and he was telling me about some of the newer hires in nearby stores being alien to the ideas of things like game days - because they're not invested in the hobby or hobbyists whatsoever. Strikes a cord with how GW is managed at a higher level.

@@Sovietskikh This seems to be the case with a lot of British gaming-related companies nowadays. Just burying their heads into the sand when it comes to feedback and trying to push on with business ideas from the 80s and 90s, as well as managing people like they're just cannon fodder. It's so sad to hear these behind-the-scenes stories about products that have infinite potential, if managed with love and care and not like a billion dollar megacorp. See this a lot in IT too.

At the end of the day, it isn't legally possible for a publicly traded corporation to operate ethically. The best they can do is pretend to be ethical, which a lot of large, well-run corporations do in order to improve their public image, but GW's management isn't smart enough to see the big picture and actually do this.

Surely it started after the Perry twins left.. Trish has an amazing monster range out - John blanch's work is renowned - Juan Diaz's demons are gold dust. Taking away the names of your artists mean people can't follow them after they've left.

I learned to paint models from scratch watching those old Duncan videos. That he was the face of those videos is great because it felt like he was my teacher just like any of my professors or instructors in academia. Like with many things, there's probably not 1 specific reason why GW doesnt want to credit their artists. That they tried to pin it on internet bullying is sad though. It felt like the most safe answer that they decided on collectively.

I have to say I miss story time with Wade. Those little moments in the live stream and the early episodes of lore master. Those little moments were someone is enthusiastic about a topic talking about a topic is my jam. The new presenters just dont have that which is such a shame

So essentially most of the GW's mishaps and problems are stemming primarily from the bad, weird and misunderstood decisions made by people who sometimes have no right of being where they are or doing what they do. It's so true and heartbreaking at the same time, how common it is, in all so many of the workplaces these days

I was on hiatus from the hobby when Matt Ward was writing codices, so I missed all that drama. All I know him from are his two Frostgrave tie-in novels, which are bloody good books and I highly recommend them.

There is a lot pushed on him by the community, some based on the word of some old guard writers and balancers like Gav Thorpe and Andy Chambers, and some is oresumption and heresay. Ward is generally regarded as the reason the 4e Lore-Determining worldwide Grand Narrative event didn't actually decide lore moving into 4e, potentially why the original Chapter Approved got axed, including 3 armies that beat Ultramarines and thenbgot shoehorned into being the reason those factions defended Terra, removing Custodes and Black Templar in the tale (the ones who beat him from CA in said Grand Narrativea, the reason those all stopped happening 2x an edition (or at all with lore consequences) and why and he pushed lore AND RULES retconning Ultramarines into the top SM spotlight and army-of-consequence. Also considered the reason balance became Marines must always be best, except those who beat UM in lore like BT, Tyranids, etc. Not sure how deep his actual rabbit hole goes but there's a lot of other stuff too, and the amount of stuff that doesn't necessarily have factoid/correlative basing aren't even among what's been brought up in my comment. Generally, he is also seen a major player internally for killing old world Fantasy

i point this to game workshop each time i file a survey because I'm (kind of) an artist myself and i love to know who sculpt the great model i find superb... i loved when in white dwarf they present long time ago the sculptors... i find morback make a lot of the miniatures i love and he's a nice guy... he encourage me to apply but canada is a long trip ! nice work guys!!

Me and the wife started the actual painting and collecting part of the hobby at what felt like the "prime time" of WHTV we have a lot of fond memories of Duncan and Peachy's painting videos we would put them on when we got home from work as a way to unwind, just watch them even though we maybe had no intention to paint the actual models shown. And I also feel like the earlier videos had a lot more niche things, like more obscure subfactions and very specific thing like an entire video of painting lightning bolt patterns on Night Lords. Also I enjoyed the stream which shenanigans like the Duncan/Peachy Genestealer 🤣. I always felt like a big lose is not interacting with the community more. Keep up the great work me and the wife have been listening/watching these videos now instead while we paint! Great content, sorry for the long rant 😅

As a freelance graphic designer I've experienced this a lot over the last 20yrs. It used to bother me, but I soon got over it.. Especially as my work crossed through healthcare, financial and retail sectors, with campaigns or products that were sensitive and not released yet. As a designer you're often not credited for your work. I know my illustration friends get more exposure, but thats a bit more niche. Crediting work is always a political minefield, especially amongst creatives. I experienced this at John Lewis when I left, I had to prove every bit of work I did over 16mths, as another designer was over protective with what they did. In the end, it was all team work.

Would love to hear any insights from Peachy around the Model Masterclass books (which were fantastic), in particular in relation to how they featured a lot of non GW products, like specifically featuring Tamiya, MiG etc.. Obviously would never be done like that today but these were about 15 years ago.. I guess also in how it worked with a lot of the FW heresy schemes using Tamiya and other non GW paints.

Another very interesting talk as always. I think as a bit of a cop-out opinion, a lot of the stuff around credit, hands/face etc. is just "damned if they do, damned if they don't", especially with how kneejerk communities can get. Listening to the decision making woes, there's definitely been a job or two (in very different industries) you could copy and paste those experiences!

Although I'm not an author myself, the company I work in used to credit authors for the material they write (even though we only write for in-industry customers). That was stopped when some person at another company apparently had some personal problem with the author of one of our books. I don't know all the details but I do know there were threats made against our author amongst other things. They were truly scared for their safety. Before that saga, our people being threatened for writing books never entered my mind, so I can see how a company would want to protect their people. Peachy mentions the number of threats that he got at his job at the liquor store were far greater in number than what he copped at GW, but I think that misses the point. Who would expect to have any threats at all made against their safety, their life or the lives of their family for writing books of all things? Now that said, I do agree with everything else Pat and Peachy said about it being a great shame that the creatives aren't credited for their work and all the reasons they stated for that.

On the subject of Peachy getting creative burnout at points in his GW career, I guess that was when the "Battle Ready" and "Parade Ready" tutorial distinction was introduced? Previously I would watch the tutorials because A) I don't believe I have "mastered" any steps in painting and find I still learn from fairly basic videos, or at least re-train bad habits out of me and B) the personalities made the videos entertaining. I found this much more difficult with the "Battle Ready" tutorials because "Paint the red bit red" wasn't very engaging. Thankfully the Warhammer + Masterclass videos and other personalities on KZfaq bring a long more value to painting tutorials than that. Other than that, another very interesting video once again.

Another enjoyable video to paint along too. Enjoyed the episode. I'm on the side of crediting the creators where possible. I know its a job and I know these people choose to work for companies such as GW, but when you are a creative person its nice to have that individual recognition. Also, you need to be happy in the place you work. Coming from personal experience, as you tend to spend more of your awake time at work than not and you don't enjoy you must move on if you can. Looking forward to the upcoming games

Only 6 minutes in, so forgive me if you do make it onto this, but: One of the worst offenders of the removal of artist credit in recent times is the Magic the Gathering set, since WOTC have had a great record crediting artists, but all the Warhammer cards just say "Games Workshop", including the card for The Golden Throne, which has John Blanche's iconic piece.

I also have to imagine that's the reason why we didn't see art included by all the masters who have worked both sides. Kev Walker, Ian Miller, Wayne Reynolds, and Raymond Swanland are, I believe, actively illustrating for Magic but didn't have stuff in the crossover set.

The Matt Ward episode was handled poorly, the current policy ensures the the Company doesn't need to deal with that sort of thing in the future, the care of duty to employees is avoided, HR also gets an easy ride. Creatives should get credit, or at least the option to be credited, the pictures on the website should include sculptors and painters, where a team are sculpting, they all get credit. Giving credit also makes people take greater pride in their work. On a similar point, the current series on WarComm showing the history of GW miniatures makes no mention of the sculptors responsible for these truly seminal pieces, that is unforgivable, the people who were responsible for the current board of directors being there should be credited

When I pick up a codex or narrative book, I want to be able to see who created the illustrations, who painted any models shown in it, and who photographed scenes using the models. When I pick up a box of models, I want to be able to see who sculpted the models, who painted the models in the box art, and who photographed the box art. I also think editors, graphic designers, etc., absolutely should be credited by name. Lore writers and game designers deserve the same credit, but I've seen enough entitled and hostile "fans" across a multitude of franchises that I can easily imagine people going overboard criticizing and even harassing writers/designers they blame for "ruining" their favorite armies. It would be wrong to do that, but I can certainly believe it happens.

I appreciate you touching on the topic of crediting the creatives. I am fairly new to Warhammer, coming from the Indy RPG scene, where you follow creators you respect and it is very common to credit artists even for simple blog posts where you borrow an image. When I subscribed to Warhammer + it blew my mind when there were no credits. Frankly, it is a huge problem for me. However, the models, lore, and popularity of the content outweigh that strike on GWs record. So I'm buying their stuff. I appreciated the alternate view points. I was unaware of why someone would want to remain anonymous (safety). However, anyone looking to start a career by joining GW...wow you'd have to think long and hard as a creative. Is it ok for me to work somewhere and leave with nothing to show for it in my portfolio.

Despite WotC's current issues, I have always appreciated how well they credit their artists in MTG. If I see a card with some great artwork, I can look at the bottom corner and see who drew it. I haven't read the D&D books, so I cannot speak for the crediting of writers on their side. However, I am a bit miffed that GW doesn't credit the exact writers in their codexes anymore. I have the 4th edition Tyranid codex, which clearly states who worked on it. The 8th edition CSM codex, on the other hand, shows no writers. If they are trying to push more for Black Library, they should start crediting writers again. That way, readers who enjoy a specific codex can look at who wrote it and search BL for published books by the said writer.

I remember an issue of WD where he showcased a giant he had converted into an armour clad empire knight using plasticard and suchlike. Just a genius

That intro hahahaha! Edit: I've painted for a few companies in the past. Been credited in books, magazines, websites etc. If it wasn't for those previous credits, being a freelance, I probably wouldn't have got more work. But, on the flip side, when you're name is out there, it's easy for people on the Internet to hate the work you put your heart and soul into. That can feel brutal!

I managed to laugh hard enough to ruin the model I was working on at Geoff’s “Milk a cow Blindfolded” joke. Genuinely floored me. On a more serious note, really love seeing Peachy defending Matt Ward. Even though I’m not overly keen on his older work, the sheer amount of unjustified hatred and cruelty he still gets online is just horrific, and it’s *so* refreshing to see someone both calling it out and being nice about him. Good on you, Chris.

The rumors are some older factories that used to make gw paints now make their own. Potentially colour forge and army painter. Might all be made up though.

Another great show guys, thank you. On the subject of credit for GW creatives didn't a lot of this start with Black Library? Around the time AoS dropped there was a move to leave the authors names out of the novels and a bunch of BL authors were very unhappy and left the company or rather stopped writing for GW as I believe many of them are freelance. I remember the Matt Ward internet rage turning nasty and reports of people thinking it was fine to confront him if they saw him in WHW which is just crazy behaviour but it feels like GW are gaslighting us by using that bullying of Matt as an excuse to not credit creatives now. If my memory ir right a lot of the Matt Ward hate came with 5e 40k BA and GK but that was 2011? So why has it taken GW 11 years to start 'protecting creatives' by not crediting them and only having a hand puppet show for painting videos? MS_Paints should consult his lawyers hand puppets were his thing way before GW 😁

Look at the old White Dwarf magazines. All the articles had credits, all the batreps, painting guides and showcases, even the 'Eavy Metal pages gave credits to team members. Matt Ward got an undue amount of grief for what he wrote, but some of it was quite bad, he had the Grey Knights inadvertently engage in a Khornate ritual by slaying a group of Adeptus Sororitas (Sisters of Battle) in a story with misogynistic undertones.

They do seem to be at least good at crediting community artists. I was very surprised to see my name included when my Ghazghkull was featured in Nate Crowley's favourite Prophet's article. I thought when i was asked if they could include it they just wanted details for reference, so it was nice to be included. I totally get why people wouldn't want credit given either. The internet is kinda mental and if i thought even for a second hate could be thrown at me by proxy of a decision GW had made, i wouldnt want anything to do with it either.

With over two decades in top end media, I can safely say losing Peachy was a huge loss to GW! Both on screen and off. The last twitch GW show I watched I nearly fell asleep, you could tell the editor was saying ‘talk a bit more’ as the length of chat and time on one shot was just so long and looked amateur! Banter , laughs and smiles…that’s what brings the customers so to speak. I loved the lockdown battles that peachy did, after long days of editing that was my excitement to see and hear 😂 the pure fun that was on screen, now GW twitch is edited boredom! Peachy keep doing what you’re doing, the other two…yeah you’re alright too 😜

I haven't listened to the whole video yet, I surely will do as I really enjoy all your discussions. I do think its fine they don't credit the individual creative, its like any other corporation, you get paid by the company and your output is then owned by the company as company IP as a fair exchange, thats what you sign up to. I think its very rare for any company to credit its output to a single person when usually it is a process involving many people. I think there's also a danger for the employer with giving too much credit to individuals, like Duncan Rhodes for example, who then became a "brand" in his own right (quite right due to his talent, and being a customer facing blogger obviously game him more visibility to say other painters or sculptors behind the scenes). I think its OK that GW want their models to be seen as "GW" models rather than "Bob Naismith" or "Mike Perry" models. It also protects the individual employees from targeted criticism or trolling as some individuals have unfortunately faced in the past.

Or then again, maybe it is a lack of self confidence, not in myself though, but due to how messy my workspace is! The explanation I heard, which could admittedly be entirely wrong, was to do with ownership. If an artist is credited for a particular sculpt or paint job, there's a ownership there that provides certain rights of use. By not providing credits, the entire ownership is GWs, and only GW can say what happens with it.

I think part of the reason that there aren’t as many viewers for the new painting videos is because most people are of the mindset that there are only so many ways to paint. It’s not like they’re painting challenges for entertainment, they’re educational sort of videos and Duncan’s old videos cover most of the fundamentals already.

I wonder if the GW painting videos aren't as popular anymore as they are too complex. Whenever I watch most I see 30 different colours being used and a process that would take me too long to get an army on the table. I think the purple power sword example is a way they shined as it was a small thing you could apply, that might take a little longer, but wasn't going to add an extra 6 weeks to the painting of an army.

Genuinely think you are onto something there. Also they rarely cover anything other than 40k .... AOS and Blood Bowl especially. I get that you could argue they are smaller games but proper videos would help those grow too. Hell I'm a fan of 40k, Sigmar/fantasy and blood bowl so it can happen.

The comment about the guys open carrying in painting seminars really hits home. I live in the states and frankly the amount of places I go where people are open carrying for no good reason is baffling. It's scary honestly. I don't feel safe anywhere anymore.

I really struggled to connect with peachy after he replaced The D, most likely for many reasons that have nothing at all to do with him. But now I find him and the rest of this crew very engaging, the comment about peachy unchained is spot on, being him self instead of part of the machine is so much more real, engaging etc. please keep the content coming as you’re nailing it.

As someone who is a big firearms proponent, I do not like open carry for several reasons. I know several stories of open carry folk getting cops called on them due to a nervous citizen. Personally, If I were to carry a firearm, I don't want to make it a public event. I'd rather just go about unnoticed and enjoy my day, trio to the hobby shop, etc.
