I was a teen in a very abusive household and my mom actually let me go sit in my boyfriend car one night. We sat in the backseat snuggled up in the snow as this song played on the speakers and I've never felt so safe nor loved before or since. He understood me so well to drive over and just let me feel safe for a little while. Now I'm nearly 50 and cry everytime I hear this. Wherever he is, I hope life was/is good to him. I was too damaged to accept such love at that stage of my life but regretted it ever since. Merry Christmas, Dan J. Reynolds. I still dream of you and that rusted out Pontiac Ventura. Thank you for this memory of love, forever.

Having a shit Christmas. Away from my wife, whom I adore and who, for some bizarre reason, loves me right back. When Shane sings "So Merry Christmas, I love ya baby, I can see a better time, when all our dreams come true" it breaks me. The raw emotion in his voice. That desperate love and desperate hope that you might be able to do enough to feel you deserve the unbelievable luck you had when she agreed to be with you. Don't know what else to say. @@MephProduction You are in the minority then my friend. Fairytale of New York is a masterpiece. Not met one person who doesn't love it. It is one of the best but being THE best is all about opinion. For me though, it is up there with Greg Lake (I believe in Father Christmas), Band Aid (Do they know.....) and Chris de Burgh (A Spaceman came travelling).

Happiness, joy, and downright pain in the depths of despair. 15 years ago, on Christmas Day, my ex-fiancé stabbed me 18 times to my skull and 12 times to my chest, inches from my heart. I’d cooked Christmas lunch, and everything happened so fast that I had no time to react at all. I never knew I’d been stabbed until I saw the blood on the crisp white walls of our new house, which we’d just moved into. Next thing I know, I am collapsing in a pool of my own blood that swallowed me up like a lake. I had just managed to dial for the police and ambulance crews to save me. Luckily, they did, but I still get flashbacks and even pain in my head (an injury site) and my chest to this very day. Life can really send you curveballs at times, but the main thing is to realise that the entire world is a very narrow and precarious bridge that we all must cross in this life. However, the main thing is never, ever to fear! . There will always be someone who will reach out to you on your journey on the bridge of life. No matter what life throws at you, remember that you’re loved and cared for, and someone is always there for you, even if it’s a stranger like me. A few years back, there was a neighbor who played this on his balcony (FL) at full blast. We sang along on our balcony & it was a small party the rest of the night. They moved & I miss their energy. (My husband & I are too introverted :( )

I've seen your lyrics bring an entire barful of Irish and brits to tears in Thailand within 2 days of the Asian Tsunami in 2004. I'll never forget that. RIP Shane. I dont normally make such comments but this is a very special song at any time of the year. Music as a whole not just Christmas music is richer for this song. In three and a bit minutes this group of musicians mange to capture happiness, sadness, comedy and tragedy and moments of pure musical brilliance. Who cares if its never made number one and probably wont this year. Everyone knows this is the best Christmas song every and wont be surpassed. I think we can safely say that
