If you're making a timer longer than 4 minutes, you will need to set the font size smaller than 100 pixels. You can still scale your timer to any size using these steps here 5:27. To calculate the best font size, divide 27300 by your number of seconds (e.g. for a 10 minute timer, 27300/600 seconds = 45.5).

It seems the size revert back to the original scaling whenever a new wallpaper or a new text layer is added even though I've disabled the posterize time effect. Am I doing something wrong? Thank you for your time
@ThePremierePro

You can add any layers you want, but just remember that any layer below the text will be masked by the rectangle. If you find Posterize Time is messing with your scaling, create a separate Graphics clip in your timeline and add your other layers to that.

Very nice!! Tell me - what does 'period period' do? I see that clicking '1..' takes it to 00:01:00:00, but is there a way to use the period for other timecode short cuts? My sequence starts at 01:00:00:00, so when I click '1..' it just jumps to the end of the sequence. Do you have a tutorial about using shortcuts to go to a specific timecode? Thanks!!

If your timer is moving it usually means either A) your sequence has a decimal frame rate or B) the gap between your keyframes does not match the number of times in your list.

This was a great tutorial. The problem I am running into though is that my 6:30 countdown runs fine until it gets to 1:18. When it reaches 1:18 the countdown freezes in place and then shifts down about 100 pixels. Please advise, thanks.
@ThePremierePro
@ThePremierePro 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jared, I suggest checking your frame rate isn't a decimal (like 23.976), try rendering your timeline to see if it's a playback issue or try changing your Renderer (in File > Project Settings) to Software Only to see if it's a GPU issue. If the problem continues, shoot me a message and I'll take a look at your project file. bit.ly/PrProContact

@ThePremierePro
@ThePremierePro 2 жыл бұрын
This workflow here might be a better way to do that kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kLh_lq1lp9nYqJs.html. Otherwise, the formula is Sequence Frame Rate divided by (Sequence Frame Rate multiplied by number of seconds). If your sequence is 30 frames per second, it would be 30 / (30 * 3) = 0.3333. Although Posterize Time only allows for one decimal place, so the timing probably won't be exact.

Hi there! So, as far as I know, I've followed all these instructions to the letter to make a 10 minute timer. I've even started with the 45.5 font size you've mentioned in the comments for that. But for some reason, my timer's animation is not toggled correctly in that it moves at random rates (i.e. lagging behind then speeding up). So at 8:21:06 in my playback, the animation timer is only hitting the 5:00 mark. At that point, however, the animation seems to move in hyper speed to still reach 0:00 at the same time as my playback. Wondering if you've seen this before or have any suggestions as to this behavior?

I seem to be having an issue with the posterization. When I toggle the effect off, the counter lines up with the position it should be lining up with every second (00:00:00:00, 00:00:01:00, 00:00:02:00, etc.) as it should, but when I toggle the Posterize Time effect on, it seems like it's taking the snapshot of where the counter is positioned at every frame 14 instead of every frame 0 (00:00:00:00, 00:00:00:14, 00:00:01:14, 00:00:02:14, etc.). Sequence timebase is set to 30 fps, posterize time frame rate is set to 1. My timer is 3:30 (3 minutes, 30 seconds) long and even in the middle of that sequence there doesn't seem to be any drift like I would expect if the division weren't quite even. It's more like it's behaving as though there's a half second offset in there, and from there continues posterizing once a second evenly but it looks like an elevator stuck directly in the middle between floors. Anyone have any ideas what might be going on here?
@ThePremierePro
@ThePremierePro 2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes this can be caused by a caching issue with the Posterize effect. A couple of things to try: delete your previews and restart Premiere, or export your timeline to confirm it's not just a playback issue.

An issue that pops up once in a while: When I've added the posterize time to the clip and changed the frame rate from 24 to 1 the second set of numbers sometimes makes a little jump downwards and then continue counting down from that lower position. I haven't been able to nail down why it doesn't happen all the time and what to do to fix it. :/ I'm using a 24 fps clip as my "base" because I can't create the first text layer if I don't have anything on the timeline before. Which may also be odd.

For long lists, just lower the font size (you can still scale it up to whatever size you want).

Mahalo for your tutorial, Paul. When talked about frame rate. So in your example, you've created the time at 30fps. When i want to use it in one of my videos, what if the frame rates of those videos is 29.94 fps or shot at at 60fps. I take that I'll need to do some tweaking?

A'ole pilikia Darryl - if your sequence frame rate has a decimal, then I recommend you create the timer in a sequence with a whole number frame rate first (like 30 fps) and then paste it into your original sequence.

@@ThePremierePro Mahalo Paul for your quick response. So it sounds like I should round up the fbs to whatever the number is with a decimal. Now if i have something that is created at 60fps, I take it that I'll need to create a timer at 60fps as well?

@@HealthFitnessMartialArtsDEng Once you create the timer for one frame rate (so long as it's a whole number), you can use it in any frame rate.

I tried this method with a 30 minute timer and it was a huge pain in the neck. After almost two hours wrestling with it, I gave up and went for a basic timer. My advice is to not try this with long countdowns.

For long timers, I recommend doing it with more than one graphic clip (e.g. 3 clips that are 10 mins each).

@@ThePremierePro when I do it for a timer of 1 min it works perfectly, but when I do it for 10 min for example, when I want to make a frame of position of the text and change the position, the max I can do is -32768 in y changes , is there a solution for that?
@ThePremierePro
@ThePremierePro 2 жыл бұрын
@@farahasma4484 I recommend using a smaller font size and increasing the scale. Otherwise, I also have this workflow which is better suited to longer timers: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kLh_lq1lp9nYqJs.html

After the bottom-up step, I cant see the list, just the start time. It's like the 2nd list is invisible. The eye is toggled on. Thanks for your help.

Make sure your Program Monitor is set to Fit (no zoom) and that there aren't blank lines in your time list.

Is there some way to create a timer that acts like a stopwatch including tenths of seconds or milliseconds? I created a list of times that are in increments of tenths of seconds, but the timer won't stay in one spot once it starts playing on the video. It starts to roll up in its box like credits or something. Idk how to describe it.
@ThePremierePro
@ThePremierePro 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, technically this is possible - although it will require a very long list of times, especially for milliseconds. If your timer is moving up or down screen, that's usually an indication that either the sequence has a frame rate with a decimal or the time between keyframes does not match the timer duration.

How do I change the duration and colour?
@ThePremierePro
@ThePremierePro 2 жыл бұрын
To change the duration, create a different list of times in Google Sheets. You can easily change the color by selecting the timer layer in the Essential Graphics panel and clicking the Fill color picker at the bottom. If you need to regularly change times, this workflow might be easier: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kLh_lq1lp9nYqJs.html

Hiya, I'm trying to make a timer that's 4min 54sec long. I can't drag the position of the list layer further up than -32768. Is there perhaps some limit to the length of the timer?

For long lists, I recommend lowering the font size - that will allow you to animate position within the 32,768 px limit.

@@ThePremierePro Thank you for the reply. So there's an actual limit to the possible length, hmmm. Would learning to create a timer in AE be a better choice, in your view?
@ThePremierePro
@ThePremierePro 3 жыл бұрын
@@marcuslinder661 That's a hard question to answer without knowing more about your project and skill level. AE is a superior application when it comes to design and animation, but it's also a steep learning curve for some. If you change your font size to something smaller than Premiere's default (100 px), you can create a timer that's well over an hour long, and you can still make it as big or small as you want.

@@ThePremierePro Thanks, yet again, for the reply. I'm trying to get into both Pr and Ae but am still a bit confused about which application to use for what task since it seems I can get by using Pr for my specific needs (interval timers to use with music clips) and not have to touch Ae at all. But there's sooo many nice effects to be had if I get into Ae proper. ;)
