Learn how to automatically trim silence from your audio clips in Premiere Pro using Adobe Audition.
I often use this method when I need to edit audio fast. It breaks a single clip with silent pauses into smaller clips which are easier to move around on the timeline. You can also use this method to speed up your dialogue.
Although all the edits are done in Premiere's timeline, we'll first need to scan and mark our audio in Adobe's audio editing software, Adobe Audition. For those of you who would like more tutorials about Adobe Audition, I have a whole course on it over at LinkedIn Learning: bit.ly/LearnAudition

jesus this i literally the difference between two videos a month and four, what an absolute legend, i've been using adobe for well over a year now and always thought this might be possible but could never find anything that worked, thank you very much good sir

if you don't see the ability to turn on Mark speech like it's grayed out then at the top right of Adobe audition interface click on waveform mode

Thanks, excellent tutorial. Is there an easy way to keep the silence parts? so when on the time line, the cuts show at both the speech part ends and the silence part ends? I need this to be able to move easily from one part to another, including the silence, and adjust the duration and speed of the video above it so it fits with the audio

Thanks for the video! I've added a thumbs up. Some questions I hope to get some help on: 1. how do i unselect a piece of audio that I don't want to mark? (ex. a slight shuffle in audio) 2. my client sent me an .mp4 video to edit, the Audition program doesn't seem to offer it when i want to save the markers.

Thanks Tanner. You can do this in Adobe Audition by using the 'Delete Silence' option. At the bottom is a dropdown menu named Fix By - set this to 'Shortening Silence' and then type in the length you want.

I've never been inclined to mess around with Audition, on account of not having any skill or facility with sound editing, but are there more practical uses than applying filters, et al?

I would assume this workflow would be very useful when cutting the VO for your filmmaker videos. It's a quick way to break one long slab of audio into smaller parts that's easier to move around the timeline. Other than that, my top 5 features in Audition are: 1) noise reduction 2) resampling audio 3) retiming audio 4) Remix 5) computer-generated speech for temp VO

Hey, loved the video but quick question. There’s something I’m trying to do in Premiere Pro to make it easier for my editing. I used the method in this video to add markers to when I talk in an audio file. Basically I’m trying to put a cut at the marker easily by hitting the Go To Next Marker button then hitting cut. The problem is this method creates a range marker and Go To Next Marker only goes to the start of it then it goes to the start of the next marker. Any way to change the marker type or make it so it goes to the end of the range marker? Or another way to accomplish what I’m trying to do? Thanks

@@ThePremierePro thanks!! Also, when I am doing dynamic link or whatever that’s called and delete a marker then save my project it doesn’t delete the marker in adobe premiere pro. It will add one if i add it in audition but not delete it or change the start/end time if it’s changed in audition. Do you know what I could be doing wrong?

You have 2 options: 1) increase the Define Silence level or 2) export a version of your file with the DeNoise effect applied, then after you've imported the subclips into Premiere, make them offline and relink to your original media.

Don't know if you will see this, but I'm curious if there is a way to apply the effect when you have two audio tracks? I use Audition for interviews and I'm wondering how to quickly cut the gaps between both speakers, is that feasible?

I'm looking for this one 2. What i learned from this video is that you can try and get this subclips on an additional track. Sync all subclips with your original track. And then you should have one track.with gaps. This track with gaps should be used with an adjustment trick to delete and gap up the video layer.

Audition is cutting often to "hard" at the end of a non silence part. Is there a possibility to adjust all ends of the markers by a certain small amount of time?

You can do this in Audition by duplicating your file, adding a Delay effect and then scanning for silence. When you import the file into Premiere, make it offline and then re-link to your original media. The much easier way (but requires a purchase) is to use Timebolt, which has a "padding" setting to add a bit more silence back to either side of the edit: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fLNnhZCYr7jOhX0.html

there seems to be an issue with removing silence in long audio clips (specifically lengths of over 30min, but definetly at over 1h. it's 4h in my case) it will select extreamly long sections of silence as audio and only cut out tiny sections of silence

Yes, this seems to be a bug in Audition. For long clips, I recommend scanning them in 20 minute batches.

I'm having a weird issue with this function that I haven't been able to find a solution to. Before I start editing my podcast, I take the individual speech tracks for each of us and put one in the left channel and one in the right channel of an audio file so that I can delete the silences between them. But when I scan, the list inaccurately shows very long durations for each instance (10-30 seconds) that show audio contained in the selection when i preview them even though when I actually apply the effect it works correctly and only deletes the silence. But this makes it difficult to make sure it's recognizing the silences correctly before applying it. This only happens with long audio files (about 90 minutes), if I select only 30 seconds or so it displays everything correctly. Does anyone know how to fix this?

This is an annoying bug in the Diagnostics panel. The way around it is to scan your file in 30 minute batches.

@@dmytrobukhriakov3499 You can do this on the timeline in Premiere. Hold down the Ctrl/Cmd key and click and drag across all of your edits - this will select them with a red vertical line. Press Ctrl+T until all your edit points have a yellow ] (closing bracket) over them. Then press Alt/Option+the right arrow key to add 1 frame to the tail of all your clips. Use Shift+Alt/Option+the right arrow to add 5 frames to the tail of all your clips.

This is not working for me i think there is some missing steps I just found another video that teach the same thing but has another step after you select "mark all" and "save" and then import the file into premiere pro, the other video has a step that involves Media encoder before import the file into premiere pro I will try that route Thanks anyway

Choose 'Delete Silence' instead of 'Mark Audio'. Under the 'Find Levels' button, you'll see the option to Fix By - set this to 'Shortening Silence' and then enter the duration of silence you want.
