Really enjoyed hearing you Dad tell the story behind the cast iron pot. Most of the things we cook with have some family history behind them and could never be replaced. I have a friend who claims he has an axe that has been in his family for seven generations. He then goes on to say that it has had 2 heads and 3 handles in that time. :)

My mother-in-law from Texas made corn bread stuffing but used biscuits instead of bread & onions & lots of celery. She made two roasting pans full & we ate all of one & the rest was for leftovers. I only had stomach room enough for turkey, stuffing & gravy even though there were MANY delicious sides. We used to make that tea too! Heaven.

She squished the meatloaf without removing her rings. Poor girl didn't even know she lost it until I discovered that I didn't like diamond ring meatloaf! 🤣

I love cornbread !! My aunt told me a sweet story about visiting a neighbor in the 50s . Her mom would take her and the siblings to visit this lady , she didn’t have much . But she always baked them a pan of cornbread and served it with her homemade jelly . They enjoyed it so much ! She was almost 70 but still treasured this precious memory !

Happy Thanksgiving to you both : D Just a note ~ if you do not have true buttermilk on hand - you can put regular milk in a quart jar and add 2 Tbs white vinegar to it and it will kinda turn into buttermilk for cooking. Stuffing is what's in the bird, dressing is baked in a pan by itself, some years we do both, 2 different kinds, traditional sage stuffing in the bird, and a pan of cornbread, jalapeño and cheese dressing on the side....all varieties are good, my mother's people came from Roanoke Virginia and the mayflower and Plymouth rock b4 that, one of the traditions they brought through their descendants to South Eastern Iowa was stuffing or dressing with smoked oysters, very good too, I really like the traditional sage, white bread, onion, celery, etc...with sausage, a spicy breakfast sausage all cooked and crumbled up mixed through...I'm certainly going to do the Irish potato cake, appreciate you sharing the recipe, made me hungry for black walnuts, lol, grandmother, (dommie anne) had a black walnut tree right out her kitchen window, had to shoo the Squirrels away and leave the dogs out too so they'd keep after the Squirrels as well....

@@cmac1100 I doubt you'll remember it, but "twangy" was also applied to Duane Eddy's guitar back in the 50s (I remember it well - "Rebel Rouser by Duane Eddy and his twangy guitar".) When I started taking guitar lessons, the teacher asked me what kind of guitar I wanted to play and I said, "twangy guitar". He was rather perplexed at that. :-)

I've just discovered your channel and I am so glad that you are sharing Appalachia with everyone around the world. Appalachia is the backbone of the United States of America. Our first settlers weathered harsh Winters with the tenacity to survive...Coal miners risked their lives to keep industry churning and keep Americans warm... the music, especially Bluegrass, melds the ancient language and sentiments from the Old Country with the hearts of today.... Appalachia is so unique that the language spoken there is not found anywhere else in the world... the Syntax, rhythm and letter combinations are unique to Appalachia. The kindhearted, gentle people are strong-willed and hearty stock with a deeply abiding faith in the One God, Creator of All Things... It is all of these attributes that have kept Appalachia intact. As a child growing up in Eastern Ohio, we had some folks who had left Appalachia and come to Ohio to start a new life. I recall in first grade a little girl named Debbie with the biggest blue eyes and whitest curly blonde hair who spoke so differently and I was fascinated, listening to her. Even though some kids teased her, she never displayed any anger towards them. Debbie always had the most kind words as she explained how where she came from everyone speaks just like her... Her voice, mannerisms and words were so gentle that even the bullies backed off from trying to offend her. I learned so much from Debbie about being calm, influstered and gently kind to people who were ignorant (in the way that bullies are). Between 3rd and 4th grades we moved to Florida and I've not seen my classmates since 1955... but the memory of Debbie from Appalachia and the wisdom she had have stayed with me a lifetime. I'm 74 years old and I have an affection for Appalachia... the people and the land. Thank-you for this glimpse into life in Appalachia. I'm glad to see that the family values are still strong and flourishing.

Thanks for sharing. Couldn't help but smile when I heard Katie talking about how the older people like to tease the kids about getting their nose. I always thought it was kind of corny because I always knew they really didn't have my nose. But I still find myself doing it when I'm around kids. Not sure how long that has been going on, but at least as long as I've been around. Maybe it's just a North Carolina thing :) Thanks for the memory and Happy Thanksgiving.

I would like to report that I was having my nose stolen by my Uncle in the farm country of Central Illinois clear back in the late 60's. This made me smile as well. Anyone from anywhere else? It would be neat to hear of this happening in another country somewhere!

@@richardclark. I'm 74 now , but vividly remember my Uncle Jack always doing it to me when I was about 5 , 6 , and 7. How could we fall for it so often ? Maybe I liked him doing it as he was giving me some attention. Winnipeg Manitoba Canada , Richard. Happy Thanksgiving to you and family.

@@richardclark. I had my nose stolen hundreds of times growing up in Illinois too. I now live in Canada and children’s noses are stolen here too. :)

I don't drink it plain much. If I do I want it to be room temperature and salt in it. But, I love to put hot cornbread in it and add onion or pepper sauce. I love cornbread. When I was growing up we had cornbread EVERY DAY for supper. Yes I said supper. Dinner was always what you call lunch now 😁. Thank you Cori I have always used my hands to mix up my dressing!

Thank you so much for sharing. I feel like I'm there. 🥰 There was a restaurant in Napa valley that specialized in buttermilk milkshakes. They were like cheesecake. Yumm. In the old days before it got soooo yuppie. I never could duplicate it. I grew up in Sonoma valley next door. The whole area used to be 'farmy' now it is wall to wall grapes. Still beautiful. So 15 years ago I moved up north to the mountains. Have a great Thanksgiving all. We love you. I can almost smell it.

I've loved drinking butter milk ever since I was a little girl, I grew up living right up the cliffs looking down at Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River, every Saturday I'd go with my mommy to the Cleveland Market, stall after stall of veggies, fruits, baked goods, cheeses, fresh meats, poultry, eggs, it had been there over a 100 years even 60 years ago, one of the best stalls was the Stumpfs, fine European family and their wonderful smoked meats and fish and poultry, they had a real milk can, old school metal kind, with a metal dipper full of cold, fresh butter milk, I'd drink at least 2 cups every time, we'd take our glass milk jug to take some home, I sometimes salt it a little b4 I drink it but I LOVE butter milk so much!! Yummy, and yes its wonderful for baking and cooking, homemade ranch dressing, lots of fresh dill, ooooh I'm hungry now, lol

My stuffing/dressing is the same except I crack two raw eggs in and use salt, pepper and poultry seasoning. I also melt a stick of butter and sauté my onion and celery for a bit and that all goes it. My husbands Mom added chopped apples and pecans to hers, my Aunt Fanny put her giblets in her stuffing instead of her gravy. I think it is so wonderful how especially country families have so many recipes to either use up what they had on hand or what they could afford.

But like was mentioned about cheese…we wouldn’t say it was tart. I think whang sums it up good even if it’s hard to define! 😜. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Thanksgiving blessings to you all.
