@@DAndyLord maybe. But you ignored my point about getting to know someone thoroughly and determining you share values and goals. In my life since 1972 when shacking up became a thing, and even more recently with sex being acceptable on the first date, it seems that people just as a matter of course move in together because they're enjoying dating. Good marriage therapists recommend getting to know someone for at least a year, through 4 seasons, all the holidays and birthdays and getting to know the families, talking about budgeting, etc. By that time you should feel confident about committing to each other and statistically results in more successful marriages. It's a crap shoot if it will last whether you get married or shack up without taking time to really examine your relationship

Your story makes me think that if you truly love someone but they have this one fatal flaw, instead of taking a chance on marriage, take a chance on serious talk and counseling and have her prove she's changed before you buy the ring. Dude needs to dump her. She won't improve until she has an opportunity to hit rock bottom. You have to let her fall, but you can't let her bring you down with you. This means that you will have to go back out into the dating market and be single and you won't have a girlfriend anymore... for a time. She is manipulating you into taking care of her own responsibilities for her and make her problems become your problems. And she is doing this in a manipulative guilt tripping way. There is a right way and a wrong way to take on responsibilities for the other, and manipulation is not the way to do it.

No one asked if the girlfriend would be willing to go through Financial Peace University to see if she can be turned away from living in debt. I think that would be the first step. If she says no because she is happy in debt, then the relationship is over. If she is willing, there's hope and the deciding factor would be how she handles money after completing the course. I agree with another commenter that said the girlfriend is grooming him so she can be a stay-at-home mom. The surprise "Guess what! I'm pregnant" announcement isn't far off, so do something now before that happens.
