Being that it is dental work, it’s not that “MAJOR” of a surgery.... I’d assume the “cosmetic” surgery is for her to get IMPLANTS.. from an insurance standpoint, insurance companies won’t typically pay much $$$ towards those types of procedure since other, CHEAPER alternatives are offered (example: such as a dental bridge or dentures). Now, getting dental Implants themselves is a very MINOR outpatient surgical procedure. The only way it become a “major” procedure is if the women has traumatic dental issues (such as infections OR maxillofacial related issues OR a chronic illness that comprises the immune system).

Then when you insist they honor their agreement and pay you back, then go on and on about how mean and out of line you are. This only happened to me one time. My father did the I told you so speech about if you want to lose friends, loan them money. If anybody would ask me now to loan them money, my answer is, If I give you my money then I will not have it and I am the one who earned it. So I trust in your ability to handle you own problems. Having dealt with a father who would most likely be diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder(if he'd go to the doctor) you are spot on. They get upset when you finally realize they are using you and then try to guilt trip you about everything. Cut them off years ago and it's been one of the best and most freeing decisions I've ever made.
@Phyllyps-Levine

TeKnoVKNG23 I believe both my parents were narcissists which means I probably am too. My mom was the worst. I did not grow up with her and met her when I was 23. She was HORRID. I have always been passive and wary of conflict. I try to keep my distance from people and people please so I am not a controller. There is no treatment for people born with this condition. Staying away from people as a probable narcissist is good for humanity and my duty. I like keeping to myself and the few times I interact with people it is fun and pleasant. Funny, my husband is a narcissist but is a kind soul. But I reject all hateful narcissist by staying as far away from them as possible. Peace and be safe.

Dental work? If it’s dental implants I would, nutrition is very important and traditional dentures are not always satisfactory. if it’s veneers or any other purely “cosmetic” dental work. NO WAY. My mother was having eating problems with dentures so I spoke to a maxillofacial surgeon I know and worked with and even with a discount she spent a pile of money on this. My mother (85 at the time) worried that she was using up our potential inheritance money but 5 years later she’s still with us and eating well. My parents sacrificed for me all their live so it was their turn.

When saying no, find a gental respectful way to do it. This is especially important with parents and people you love. It's hard when someone is asking for something out of line, but for the benefit of future relationships, it's very necessary. Also, this was for a dental procedure, he didn't say what it was for, but I'm wondering if it was to fix dentures or implants or something like that. She's probably embarrassed about her teeth and wants to fix them. He could have offered to brainstorm with them for another way to fund the procedure.

Good advice. I send my father cards, I will help him medically. I will not fund his stupid decisions. If someone thinks you're a bad child for having perfectly reasonable boundaries, that's a reflection on them not you.

Dental might actually be a quality of life issue. Lots of people think it is cosmetic when it isn't. I can't say cause not a lot of info, but when it comes down to it, they need to be able to take care of themselves.

why do so many parents feel they are entitled to have they're children support them , My Grandparents were too proud to take anything of anybody , especially they're kids, i am not seeing that same type of attitude in this day and age and it pisses me off .

Maybe he could offer to help his mom pay for some of her dental surgery as a gift if he is financially able to do so. That would be a loving thing to do for his elderly mother & that way no one goes in debt.

Their insurance will have to cover it, or they need to budget better. Dental work is their responsibility. From a practical stand point, you don't co-sign a loan for an 80 year for elective surgery. There's a good chance they won't have enough time to pay it back and now it's your loan.

@Big Bubba the problem is that sometimes necessary surgery is called "cosmetic" when is not covered by an insurance. For example if she needs a teeth replacement and she can't eat, well, that is considered cosmetic for several insurance companies unfortunately, is quite expensive and makes your life miserable. I just hope he makes the right choice :)

Dentistry at 80 that's only cosmetic? I would make absolutely sure with a visit with her to the dentist to make sure exactly what the treatment plan and/or diagnosis is. Dental problems can be fatal and at 80 diminished comprehension could be an issue. I'm speaking from 40 years as a hygienist and both parents had dementia.

Hold on, wait a minute, what did the parents do with their money over the years? Did they spend it lavishly on their son/children? If so, could they expect the same treatment. No, it doesn't make up for them not preparing for themselves BUT I will say if my child comes to me for help, I help them as much as I can.

Karen Rankin Under your logic, which I’m sorry to say is atrocious in this specific case, my dad should be expecting a new Porsche 911 just because he paid for my college 27 years ago. Good lord. My parents would never take or expect the money back. They just want me to live a good life and be good to them, and I have been in both cases.

Parents aren’t entitled to anything. You chose to have children and raise them. We appreciate our parents but if my mother ever said “ YOU OWE ME FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOL” that she put me in I would laugh. I’ll do anything for my mom but my mom would never ever ask for anything from us. Ever.

If the parents gave gifts to the son, but they expect payment back, well, like Ramsey said, it was a transaction, not a relationship of gift. As it is, we know from the son's previous call that the parents had out of control spending on themselves.

@Carole W. under my logic.... no, not my logic... just trying to imagine the shoe being on the other foot. I was blessed with wonderful parents who are still married. My mother will take my youngest most anytime I need to ask (though I seldom do because she has done so much for me in years past). My Dad has mowed my yard and helped me with what he could around my house not only when I was a divorced mom and now that I am widowed with an added child. My parents would never ask me for money because they have more than me BUT if I had it to give (and I did when my late husband was living) and they needed it I would give it to them. I would give them the shirt off my back. I take them food because they wont accept money as payment for anything. They are the epitome of what parents should be according to God's word and according to God's word I honor my mother and father. Again, I don't claim to know the perfect answer to this guy's question but I do know that we don't know enough of the backstory to make fair judgements or assumptions. Perhaps Dave knew more. I don't know that either. I know it is a rushed process when you call in because I called once ti ask a question on air once. They called me back while I was driving my late husband to a chemotherapy appointment on a two Lane highway. I had to dash into a drive somewhere quickly and be on my toes. I wasn't and thought after I got disconnected... oh why didn't I mention this or that?!! So, again, I know the hurried process and well the son didn't go into specific... does the mom need teeth pulled which is why she needed dental work? What if her insurance won't cover it all? I could go on and I know there are so many variables for all sorts of reasons. I just say as a grateful adult child if I had it to give free and clear I would give it!!!
