Therapist uses the lyrics from Linkin Park's newest release "Friendly Fire" (off of their upcoming album Linkin Park album, Papercuts) to discuss how in conflict we often cause unintentional harm when we forget what we are fighting for. The song is a call to remember our ultimate goal which is connection and use that goal to direct the way that we show up in conflict. Part of the power of this song and the message is the use of Chester Bennington's vocals.

How many times someone has sat in their car alone and listening to linking Park, trying to control emotions and rewind your mind, letting out rage? You can't bring actions or people back, there's a future. Yet his voice stroke the right notes in your soul

I am that someone, and I’ve been going through something with someone that this song almost seems to have been written about. I lost an incredible friend to friendly fire for reasons I still can’t understand three years later. It’s the worst kind of pain but this song is a comfort

@NickTasy bro! Be strong. You got this, you can prevail and honor their existence by keeping it in your memories. You got this shit! Don't let one bad day ruin your week or mo th. We all carry deep scars. You are not alone man. We all have those days, trust me. Do what makes you happy to clear your mind, more bullshitnwill.come your way. But even taking 4-6 hours to yourself or dk what makes you happy can change your mentality. Take my word for it, I've lost over dozen friends to war or shit on the street. Make time for yourself and don't get caught up in self destructive cycle. Been there. As I said, you are not alone

I remember the day he died more vividly than most of my memories. I didn’t cry. Not immoderately. I was just utterly shook to my core! I couldn’t move, I froze and just could not fathom that he (of all people) was gone….. it was like Kobe’s death utterly heartbreaking, but more personal to me luckily I had plans with friends that day that got me out and about. But, it was impossible to get him off my mind that day. I just couldn’t believe he was gone 😢

I personally think the "what are we fighting for?" has dual meaning in this song - first as "fighting for what reason?" (like, why are we fighting? we love each other) and also "fighting for what cause?" (like, what is our purpose together? remember we love each other and have a common goal). But that is just my take on it after about 20 listens. No matter what, SO powerful and relatable, just like all of their songs. Thanks for sharing your reaction!

Linkin Park has been a source of comfort for years. Throughout my middle to late teens, I felt very lonely, looking for some sense of belonging. And then I heard “Somewhere I Belong”, and the song made me realise, “Someone feels exactly the same way as I do.”. It happened again many years later. December 2019-January 2020 was a dark time in my life. For various reasons, I honestly didn’t want to be alive anymore. Thankfully I spoke to a doctor and told her everything that was going on in my life and in my head. I don’t think I’ve ever sobbed so hard in my life. But I remember especially on the way home, randomly shuffling through the songs coming through my headphones, and “Breaking The Habit” came on. And the lyrics hit me like a punch to the heart. “I hurt much more than anytime before. I have no options left again.” And again, that moment of realisation. “Someone feels exactly the same way as I do. I’m not alone.” So Linkin Park will always be the most special band in my heart. I’m in a much better spot in my head these days, but I encourage anyone who’s struggling to reach out and talk to someone. If you get the chance, please ask for help.

Sadly, if he hadn’t died this song would have been shredded by a large sect of LP fans. They ridiculed them because their sound was changing to a bit more of a “poppy” sound. It got so bad that they were having garbage thrown at them on stage. Such a shame, these lyrics are beautiful.

Just wow. When Chester past I decided to just drop Linkin Park because I wanted to remember the band when they were whole and didn't want to face that he was really gone. His lyrics touched so many hearts, stopped my brother and sister from suicide and keeping their heads up when life was tough. The title of the song alone is what drew me to click on this video as well as your good explanation of the meaning of it. Honestly this is one of the few songs that literally speaks to what I am going through with my best friend, I didn't feel understood by him or accepted when I began my personal "inner work" taking off that mask we all wear around people we aren't close with. I didn't feel accepted because he wouldn't take his mask off so I pushed him away for almost 4 months and he came to me to talk about his own revelation about himself and he began to take off the mask and all of the pain, lack of acceptance I felt towards him was gone in an instant, and it felt so much better that I didn't pressure him to change and that he did it for himself. It was funny because during the few times I would see him because he'd come to workout with my roommate I couldn't help but shake this need to want to hug him or let him know in some way that we're still friends and I care but i refrained, I didn't know if i would regret it or not and at the moment I guess I do but don't. This song just speaks volumes and I will def give papercuts a listen after hearing this. R.I.P Chester.

At age 9 I lost my grandfather and LP came into my life with Papercut, ever since then I had 2 Idols, my grandfather and Chester. Fast forward almost 32 and still living life after my idols are gone. This message is 2 months late but I wanted to sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart & soul. I had been going through a very, very dark time in my life (almost an entire year, actually) and I seriously contemplated suicide. And yes, I am a diehard Linkin Park fan, even had the fortunate pleasure to see them in concert nearly a dozen times. Linkin Park's music has always been there for me and many of their words, sung by the angelic Chester Bennington, has always resonated with me. With all that being said, the way you broke down this song, in great detail I might add, spoke directly to my struggles and for the lack of a better term, you truly touched my heart & snapped me out of that dark mental prison I was in. So, again, you saved my life with this video. This is not a joke. Since I first watched your video, my life has been enlightened and I truly love & appreciate what I have. Again, thank you for your incredible words, guidance & wisdom. I just wanted to let you know that you saved a life here. Like Chester & the rest of Linkin Park, you will always have a place in my heart. Thank you.

I feel like "What are we fighting for?" has 2 meanings. Like, it's a play on words and phrasing. It's asking what is the goal of our fight, as in what is our shared goal we fight towards. But, then it's also asking why are we fighting each other, like what was the catalyst for us to be in conflict with one another.

Thanks for sharing your take on the song, to me this has a deeper meaning that myth be just the connection I feel with his music, But I think he is not talking to someone else, I believe he is talking to him self, let me explain. There is times where you just sit alone and there is two parts of you, one that has completely forgotten what is it that makes you wake up every morning and that feeling of your own self being your worst enemy, sometimes you just want to say what Chester is signing in this song, stop hurting your self and realize you are gone to far and there is no going back, because there is darkness ahead and darkness behind, so your mind and soul are both taking friendly fire, because you have to fight against your self and there is a promise that you will no longer be your enemy when it's all over.

They have always been my favorite band because they have been able to express what I can't through their music. When they released Lost last year, it hit me and brought up a lot of things I wasn't ready for. My kids now listen to LP with me and I have the privilege of teaching them about expressing themselves through the music they enjoy. That said, Taylor, please, will you review Lost and give your thoughts on it because it is very impactful song and I think it would help many if they have not already heard it.

Ever since I came across this KZfaq channel on my Google feed I found myself listening to this song daily because it really hits deep. What are we fighting for? That's what I needed to be asking myself. Thank you @heartsupport

I used to be a huge fan of LP but Chester's death pushed me away. I've been struggling with a severe depression for a few years and to listen do their songs can put me in a very dark place because the lyrics are so true and raw and i really miss him. It makes me cry every time. Anyway i'll just try to keep the good memories from the first time i listened to them in school when life was good.

This song is lot easier to listen to without the music video. It’s on my daily playlist, but the MV breaks me every time. I still had to look away from most of the it. ( miss you Chester) ✌🏻

I can't believe this is an unreleased demo from their last album. It's honestly better than half of the songs from their one more light album

From Micro: @Michael-qc9jm I’m sorry that you are going through these things right now. I hope you can find some relief to what you’re going through in time. Feel free to share more if you ever want. <3 Hey friend, thank you so much for reaching out here and sharing about this loss that you've been experiencing in your life. It must be really painful to feel like having lost your entire family, to be away and isolated from them. I'm really sorry that you are going through this, friend. It is so hard to be in the position of feeling like you would have ruined something that is important to you. That your actions could have been the cause of losing people you love and not sharing life together anymore. I imagine how suffocating this must feel, as if you wake up every day and feel this heaviness on you that keeps pressuring your heart over and over. It's hard to focus on your daily life and commitments when there is this type of wound that keeps hurting so very much. For what it's worth, I personally experienced losing my family, besides my sister, after different losses and a need to separate myself from some people. It was hard to feel like this distance needed to happen because we couldn't find a common ground to communicate peacefully and love each other. Of course I imagine that it is different in your situation but I wanted to extend my affection for you here in what must feel like a profound sense of loneliness. Feeling uprooted from your family is a type of pain that words are not enough to describe. This song is definitely a strong reminder of the conflicts we may have with people we love, and how hurtful that can be. It is such a powerful music that can easily bring tears to your eyes and make you recess all the guilt, pain and regrets that you could have felt in your relationships... It certainly did for me, and I hope that somehow this music can bring relief in just allowing you to feel emotions that may havebeen buried within. We don't want to be in war with the people we love, we don't want to feel like we have to stay away from them, we don't want to feel like we have been hurting them. We just want to love them fully, share good moments together, share what life has the most beautiful to offer. I imagine that the feelings of guilt and shame must be very present and overwhelming in your life right now. But I hope you can keep in your mind that no matter what happened, you're not a bad person, and you are not worthless either. We sometimes make mistakes that feel are not forgivable once we are in the midst of the consequences that they created. But I do hope that you will manage to find peace and healing from the situation, eventually that the battles between your family and you could find some resolution that would be positive for all of you. You deserve so much to feel like you can breathe again without feeling any heaviness while doing so. If you ever need to share more or to connect with people who will support you through this painful season, please don't hesitate to reach out again order Sure more, or even to join our community on our anonymous forum, the support wall, at forum.heartsupport.com. You matter friend.

Its unfortunate that the level of effort it takes for two people to make something is something most people will avoid just because its so easy to find something easy to get through a night or a week.
