How do you overcome jealousy between loved ones? Why do we struggle to accept different perspectives?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright continue reacting to Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3. Check out part 1 if you haven't seen it. They talk about Ping’s initial jealousy and struggle to accept Po’s panda dad, Li, and why parents often worry about losing their children’s love to other parental figures. Jonathan shares his own experience being a co-dad, which isn’t that different from Ping and Li. They also discuss the different perspectives and roles we play in each of our relationships. And Alan praises the Dreamworks VFX team - they crushed it! Skadoosh!

"I realize having you in Po’s life didn’t mean less for me it means more for Po.” - Mr. Ping This is such a relatable quote. While it's natural to feel threatened by the influence of another adult, such as a teacher or step parent, in our child's lives, they're actually enriching their experiences.

Except for the fact that Po’s bio dad literally tried to take over when he first found him. His first reaction to finding app was “I’m going to take him far away from his real dad where he can’t get to.” Without even actually consulting his dad. I would immediately call the police at that point. Bio parents do not get to immediately take over just because they are related by blood

It’s worth mentioning the two different names both Ping and Li chose for Po. Ping gave him the name Po, which in Chinese translation means “soul” or “spirit,” and Li gave him the name Little Lotus as in the Chinese culture is a high symbolism of beauty coming from the mud giving significance to the purity of the mind and heart. It’s valued in the Buddhist religion as “the seat of Buddha.” Thus, both names do link the connection and significance Po has to become the Dragon Warrior, in the 3rd movie, Po establishes a spiritual role, and the 2nd he focuses on the heart.

Actually his name is "宝平" Po Ping, which in literal meanings Po 宝 means baby or precious (among other meaning of the word), and Ping 平 means peace (also among other meanings of the word) , it isn't "soul" or "spirit" so his name given to him by Ping means "precious peace" and not "spirit" or "soul" 😊

Same, another thing I dislike about films is when a couple has divorced and the new Step dad turns out to be a terrible person, so when they die/leave the original couple gets back together. Doesn't happen all the time, but has happened a few times.. (spoiler about the Boys s3) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . It was one of the things I really disliked about Season 3 of the boys, I think it would have been a much better story had that guy (Forgot his name) realised Homelander was terrible and stopped being a lil shit himself, but now it's obvious Mother's Milk will just get back with his daughters mother

I appreciate your point and agree with the dynamic between Ping and Li. I just want to comment that animated movies do not automatically constitute “this is a movie for children” - Often times, most animated movies are for ALL audiences as they can blend in comedy and enjoyment for younger audiences to enjoy, but tackle deeper, more complex issues that adults can relate to and appreciate.

1. I also love that theory. I'm adopting it and adding it to my headcannon family with full honors and love. 2. The whole video I was hearing "stupid" and thinking "airhead." There's stupid, and then there's a different way of thinking. One is not necessarily the other. The pandas apparently share a trait of missing many things that are obvious to most other people. However, this trait seems to allow them to avoid the troubles and concerns that many of these other people deal with on a daily basis. Are they really stupid? Or are they just thinking differently? I think it depends on the situation.

I would honestly like to see a comparison of adoption with Tigress. Shifu adopted her when she was a young child, so she was old enough to remember the orphanage and the treatment she went through. Shifu also raised her in a strict environment, and while some of that was to control her strength, most of it was because of the truama of what happened with Tai Lung. Tigress finally comes into her own once she meets and becomes part of the Furious Five, but I just think it would be an interesting comparison for adoption in the same movie vein as compared to Po's experience

Our very niche talent to make great FX tends to get so overlooked because viewers are more prone to focus on the characters (and understandably so!) and story. Of course, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, we're the equivalent to stage ninjas; if the viewer doesn't notice our work at first, than we've done our job right to blend in with the scene! I remember that the day I found out that I was addopted is in my first day of fourth grade. My mum walked with me to the class to drop me off and one of my friends at the time walked up to us and asked if I was adopted. That evening my parents told my brother and me that we were (Not from the same parents). After a few years, I ended up going to therapy and my therapist told me that the reason I was so emotionally detached from my family was because I was adopted. I'd never felt that way in my entire life. They (therapist) told me that I should start calling my parents by their first names and it never sat right with me. I never, ever called them something other than mom or dad and it put a massive doubt in my families relationship and left us very far apart. Further than we were before I went to therapy. I quit going after about 1.5 years and my parents and I have never been closer. Turns out I just don't tend to get emotionally attached to people because I fear them leaving me and I want to have control over my life. Needless to say, that was a traumatising experience. But, my mum is still my mum, and my dad is still my dad. No matter who I came from, they raised me

Ping saying "Your son got mad at you. Welcome to parenthood," just sounds incredibly authentic to me. That's the best way I can describe it. James Hong has three children himself and 8 grandchildren. Being in his 90's, he's probably got several great grandchildren as well. He understands what new parents are feeling and seeing; a lot of the new parents he's met have been his own family, and that's on top of his own experience! It sounds like he's drawing on something he'd either want to say or even something he has said to one of his own family, and that just gives an incredibly intimate and authentic feel to his dialogue in that scene.

What I love about the Kung Fu Panda trilogy it revolves about Po’s identity throughout the films. His body in the first film, his mind in the second film and lastly his spirit in the third film.
@complex2live
@complex2live 10 ай бұрын
What makes it better though is the fact that none of them seem like the same story. It's the same characters but different plots and twists and challenges. The 1st one revolved around Po getting chosen and having to think he needs to train his body, but upon getting the scroll realized that he didn't need to change. Just be yourself and you can do anything which is what led to Tai Lungs defeat, it wasn't that Po learned a new fighting style, he made his own. The 2nd film revolved around Po finally sking where he came from and getting both sides of the story from both Ping and Shen. And Shen is written in a way where he is shown to have met Po before and is trying to kill him and all the masters. And Po has to learn Inner Peace in order to finally top and destroy the machine. And lastly this film. As you said, Po learn about his spirit throughout the films. He finally gets a vaster and bigger perspective of his life through his father leading to some deep moments between him his father and Ping. But then Kai is a very Intimidating villain that once he is turning Po into chi, the Pandas realized through the spirit how to make chi. Still one of th eonly perfect trilogy.

Something interesting about Li is that in some of the original drafts, he was very conflictive and crashed with Ping much more harshly, because it created easy conflict for the story. They decided that this was better and im so glad they did

I think another thing that made Po want to know where he came from more is the fact that his entire culture was thought to have been killed and then he finds out that they're still alive, so naturally he wants to know everything about it, and the one person who is able to teach him all that is his father, who also thought was dead

I know it wasn't mentioned because it doesnt fit the topic (and that's fair!) but I still think it's criminal you guys didn't linger a bit longer on the flashback of how Pos mother saved him. The art style changes and the music, all leading up to her sacrifice, such a beautiful and desperately tragic moment of love. I cried so much and I bet Alan did too. The Kung Fu Panda trilogy is peak cinema.

I know this isn’t the most popular of the trilogy, but the story with Ping and Li is just something I’ve always loved and felt envious about. I grew up with divorced parents since I was about 4 and I just grew up believing that when parents get divorced they are supposed to be against each other. And it got worse when my step dad came around as I always had a strong bond with him. Just seeing that despite they are not together but Li and Ping still rally for Po and bond over their love for him was just awesome

Loved the growing dynamic between Po’s 2 dads. It’s like “Emily Windsnap and the Castle in the Mist”: a book I read as a kid, where the main character’s parents have to learn how to co-parent. Like in this movie, Emily unintentionally shoves aside her mom to get to know her dad. Emily’s mom is like Mr. Ping, in that she’s raised Emily her entire life and now feels replaced. Emily’s dad is like Li, in that he seems more fun and has way more in common with her but doesn’t quite know how to parent.

I'm a Guatemalan adoptee (transracial and international) and I'm really glad you all reacted to this. I'll share a little bit (or a lot I guess lol) of my story regarding both parts. My (adoptive) mom chose to have an open adoption, so I've known my birth mother and a lot of my birth siblings since I was just a little one. I'm really grateful for this; I've kept up my Spanish and learned a lot about the culture as such. However, what's hardest for me is that both my birth family and adoptive family (sans my mom and my birth mom), kind of act as if I'm not adopted and that we're "family" in the same way that they are with everyone else on their side of the family. This makes it tough, especially since I am not the same race as my adoptive family. When it comes to my blood family, they have recently begun contacting me and speaking about me as if I've been their sister and with them all along, but they barely know anything about me. Yes, I'm their blood family, but I don't really consider them "family" in the way that they're acting because we just don't have that bond. I still care about them and I'm happy that I have direct contact with them now, but it's brought up some complicated feelings. So even though I've had an amazing mom that's supported me 100%, the rest of my family kind of just doesn't get it, and that makes it tough. I love them and overall consider myself so fortunate, but like every adoptee, I go through struggles too. And that's why I think it's important to talk about the subject, because that way, more people will feel like they're being heard. I wrote a short film about this topic and people seemed to learn a lot from it, which made me feel more validated. Hearing y'all talk made me pretty emotional. I've always been open about this topic, but lately, I've been thinking on it more and how it has affected me. Now I gotta rewatch Kung-fu Panda lol

I think that is the 'twist' (for lack of a better term) in the challenge from the adopting side. Yes, an adopted child is family and loved and what have you. But as an adopted child - and particularly in instances like yours where there is an inmutateable undeniable difference - there are experiences that the adopting parents can not and will not ever be able to experience or understand in full, above and beyond the normal facets of that as a parent. A way forward then is not to ignore it or pave over it, but accept it and support the exploration as best one can, and letting them have that space.

I've watched all of the kung-fu panda movies several times and seen most of the important clips dozens of times. All that being said every time i see the Po needs both of his dads scene i cry. It is just so perfectly written. Po's dad finally comes to terms with the fact there is room for both of them in Po's life and Po's biodad learns no parent is perfect and mess up all the time. In the end both want what is best for Po but that is something only Po can decide and the two of them can only support and guide him the best they can.

Six years ago, I married a widower with 5 kids, ages 5-13. Then we had one more. It's been a fascinating and exhausting lesson in how kids relate to parents and vice-versa. Only two of the kids really remember their biological mom, and the difference between them and the younger kids is noticeable. What surprises me the most is how intensely the youngest of the five (who can't remember "Kim-mom" at all) is VERY much like me. I've come to the conclusion that the nature-vs-nurture question has different answer for each individual. I would love it if you guys could find a movie that accurately portrays a single person marrying into a widowed-with-kids situation. 'Cause Nanny McPhee and Sound of Music make it seem much simpler than it is! There's very little information out there about this type of situation, as most books and radio shows assume that it's more of a co-parenting type of thing. Us full-time add-on parents usually get just a brief mention, but not a full look into how our situation is different.

You don't have to prepare yourself for that moment if you co-parent from the beginning. Sometimes parents find themselves in a difficult situation. Many times, that situation is temporary even though the available solutions in the foster care and adoption systems are often permanent. Needing help doesn't disqualify someone from being a great parent. The idea that a child has to be entirely severed from one family in order to belong to another creates preventable and unnecessary harm. You don't have to do it that way. We as a society don't have to do it that way. There are many other possibilities if we are willing to look for them.

Humans evolved to be loved and cared for by the entire tribe. Having only a single parent or pair of parents that are the only ones allowed to care about them is such an alien way to raise a child, it's no wonder people these days get so emotionally screwed up, especially given how much time it takes to work a full time job, which is time spent away from the child. Having more (responsible) adults who love a child can only be a good thing.

Hey so I'm an adoptee (international, no knowledge of birth parents) and I had the uncommon experience of having parents that were very encouraging of me if I wanted to find my biological parents. And I am personally not interested, but I think knowing that they were encouraging of it and would be/are supportive if I ever wanted to made me feel very comfortable with the idea. I don't really know how they came to that decision and how they handle their feelings on it. But I do know I have friends who didn't have that support in their life, and it made them scared and feel bad/guilty about even entertaining the idea of finding their birth parents or even connecting to a culture they didn't grow up with. So while I can't advise you on how to handle the feelings of apprehension and worry, I can say that for your hypothetical kid, the supportive environment had a big impact on me. So even if you don't quite have it all sorted out, I think that you can still show your support and give that decision to your child (bluntly put, it's not about you, it's the child's decision).

It's not often that you get a trilogy where all three movies are pretty much at the same level. This is one of those exceptions as far as I'm concerned. I don't think my mother ever reached the point that Po's dads did, but my stepmom has. Her family is as much a part of mine as the people in the family I was born to. Her generation has known me since I was 9 or 10, so a little more than 80% of my life. I've done the math. While my mom never reached that point, one thing she _did_ do was make an effort to let us make our own minds up. She consciously avoided trying to poison us against our father or stepmom. There were plenty of things I missed out on, including a closer relationship with my father - I think that has more to do with him than anything - but I didn't have either parent trying to turn us against the other. Mom didn't reach the level of "enlightenment" as shown here but she was definitely far more conscious of what she was doing than some of my friends parents. I always enjoy watching these. Pulling out the deeper meetings of literature and movies has never been one of my strengths. But with your explanations, both the psychology and the general cinematography, so yes, both of you, I get a better picture of why a particular movie or set of movies hits me the way they do. And then something that I thought was magical in the first place becomes even more so. "It doesn't stop being magic just because you know how it works." Terry Pratchett

The part that got to me the most, in this movie, is when Li tells Po he did it to not lose his son again and, by doing it, made Po go through losing the people he loves... I mean, I get it. It's hard to think straight when fears take hold. But making the one you love experience what you are trying to avoid is... it hurts. Every time I watch this movie. This just hurts.

Adoptive mama here, and the key to all parenting is putting the kids first, especially if they're going through hard stuff. Their hard stuff is the priority. My kids are 16 (came via foster care), 7 & 6. 7 and 6 are biological brothers, adoption is very open. 16 was a big learning curve because of trauma. Her adoption is also open, but I had to learn how to love her biological mum when she had hurt my girl so much. That took unexpected work, but for me, it taught me so much about the nature of love - that there's always room for more, love is limitless. The more I loved the sweet and broken woman who brought my daughter into the world, the more I loved my daughter, and the more love I had to share. With all of our kids' unique stories, the first rule for us is to tell the truth, but keep it age appropriate. So they don't know every detail, some of the details aren't mine to tell them, but everything they know is true. My mom's family is full of 'secrets' and shameful things that no one talks about. There is nothing shameful about the origins of my amazing children. Their stories are full of love, sacrifice, pain, and struggles, but mainly love. Adoption is not easy. But I'm grateful that I get to be a mom, even when it's hard. Because every one of us has parts of our stories that are hard, that makes us human. The key is choosing to love.❤

The thing you said about people seeing different sides of us, was explained so well. It also reminded me of a play in a series called "Bloom Into You" The play was about this girl who wakes up in the hospital with amnesia. During her stay, she gets visited by her family, school president, and partner. They each describe a different version of her, which confuses her even more. It brings up questions about who she really is. She doesn't know and everyone isn't really helping. She thinks she has to choose between the 3. Then, if I remember correctly, she talks to the nurse. An outside person who didn't know who she was until her stay at the hospital. The nurse says "Why choose one? Why not be the person you are now? You are still you." Something like that. Anyway a wonderful video as always!

My parents are divorced and have been for... 15 years? Somewhere in there. Anyway. Around the 4th year (if I recall) they chose to live together again but also with my mom's husband. They made this decision for me. They felt it would make my life better to not bounce houses and to have both of my parents. I'm sure there was some contention in the beginning between my dad and mom's husband, but if there was, they never let me know about it, and honestly, I appreciate that. Having the perception that everything was okay is far better than the opposite. I know things are okay because even after I moved out 6 years ago, they've continued to live together. I also have to thank my mom's husband. After he proposed to her, he asked me to go to the store with him. On the drive, he said these exact words "So, you know I asked your mom to marry me. And I know your dad is still in your life. I'm not taking that from you, and I have no desire to be your dad or even your step dad. If you want to call me that, you can, but you don't need to. I'm just the guy marrying your mom. We cool?" I hadn't even considered that being a possibility, but it really helped shape my perspective of the situation and eased my mind to never have to think about that. Jono saying his stepson just has another person in his life to care about him hits home. I feel that's how my mom's husband has always thought about it, too.

I love how the Panda's 'kung fu' technique seems based off Tai Chi, which is an art made for relaxation and meditation - yet a further extension of the lazy panda trope they've played into the whole series. It seems that they thought out the whole trilogy before making the first one, given the strong themes and continuity. I'm really impressed with how the whole series is one good movie after another - they all tie in so well and are very well-made. Such wonderful films.

I've always liked how in the scene where they're rescuing Po, Mr. Ping Said "a family" instead of just "a dad" or "a parent". It really shows how much he's grown from the whole ordeal, and that he no longer sees this as a battle for their son, rather more as a chance for Po to have a bigger family and a better life. His development was probably my favorite in the movie. Thinking you're gonna lose your child must be hard (I wouldn't know lol), so it's nice to see him finally come around in the end. What my dad taught me was that a relationship can only truly be effected by the two people involved in that relationship. There was a period when my mom left my dad because she wanted to be happy, and I would only see him about once a month because we lived 9 hours away. I guess because we weren't as close as he wanted us to be he would blame my mom, saying that she was turning me against him instead of looking at himself. Which is super mess up since even after she left him, he got in a motorcycle accident ans she nursed him back to health. It's been 19yrs since they split and I'm not in speaking terms with my dad and he still refuses to believe that he's at fault for the deterioration of our relationship. It's always felt like my feels and perspectives always take a back seat to my dad's, and if my perspective is different he acts like I'm stupid or don't know what I'm talking about because I'm the kid and he's the parent and I should just listen to him. Which is the main reason our relationship fell apart. This channel has really help a lot in understanding why I've felt so bad for so long when it comes to my dad.

A lot of Kung Fu Panda's humour works is because everybody is deadpan or serious, playing it straight against Po's and the other pandas' wilder characters. I even saw a show where a stepdad said "you dont have to call me dad if you don't want to you can call me whatever you want" the key is to wait for the child to call you mom or dad instead of you saying I'm your new mom or new dad.

Seeing these two parts makes me wonder how when I adopt down the road, how it will go.

Jono's monologue in the end had me in tears. I hadn't thought of the purpose of life being that way for a long time. Thanks for making realise.

As a stepson who’s also a Tylor, any kid would be lucky to have a Jonno in their life.

This was a really nice, sweet perspective on adoption/blended families! Love it! That line about 'not less for me, more for Po' gets me every time, along with the 'so your son got mad at you' line! lol. Ping is such a good Dad! Love this! And love how you showed that Li wasn't really WRONG fully with what he did - like Ping said, wrong thing for the right reasons! Feels!

So, 7:55 gets me every single time. The joy and immediately following crying when Ping starts to go away is the most heartbreaking thing in all your videos, guys 😢. Thank you for sticking to the reality of our emotions (even if it hurts).

I was waiting for the double dad defense scene in this episode and it was missed at least in this cut. This is still amazing! I love the Kung Fu Panda movies and theyve always pulled at my heart strings. Amazing work!

I love how Mr. Ping gets defensive over Po when Li shows up. The goose loves his son no matter the species difference, and papa's gonna protect his son from possible danger. Its so nice that Li and Po never wanted to push Ping away while they were bonding too, even if he wasn't directly involved he was always there if and when his son needed him
