@@watchedbyadrien the point isn't to hear what he's saying. The message conveyed here is that she misses that dude. The music gets intense as she gets overwhelmed by her sadness. It's a great technique.
@watchedbyadrien
@watchedbyadrien 3 жыл бұрын
@@themadraseye it’s way too quick to convey that. there’s no context here. because he barely has time to say anything, she literally could be crying about anything else. in no clear way does it show that she missed the dude. when in the Godfather, the dialogue of Solozzo and McCluskey fades out as the camera moves into Michael’s CU and the street sound design becomes more and more intense, we are now in Michael’s head, the sound design represents the clamorous decision he has to make and at this point, the dialogue of the other two is insignificant. here, its the contrary. the voicemail is fundamental for us to care. at least, it needs to establish who is talking and what is he talking about and once it’s clear, you can lower the sound and up the music and have her cry because at that point, we can emotionally connect.

"WHAT?!" that's exactly what I said when it faded to black. So she hears a knocking in the middle of the night and she immediately gets scared and assumes it's coming from behind that door? and what was that creature and what did it had to do with her dead husband?. Everything about this film is awesome (editing, cinematography, directing, acting, lighting, production design, you name it), but you know that Story is KING above anything else, and this needs a much better script. How many short films have I done? Zero, but at the end of the day, this is done for a general audience who likes good horror films (that hopefully make sense).
@paraisoenllamas

@@deleyton I did not make a short film either, but many times and tried to think of an idea for a short film and in general the first ideas have to be discarded because they are influenced by everything one has already seen. As you said, she gets scared without any context, and the ending is too typical.

Tottaly agree, the cinematography is TOP notch . superb grading. the actress is beautiful. but even she had hard time to believe her because the story is that she is scared panicked when nothing had happened(unrealistic) . the knocking comes to make for the title. OK. that door got jammed . and then she sees her dead husband, and hilariocity alert she actually has no problem and asks him "please stay" :)) . I couldn't believed when it ended they left us with 2 mins outro. WTF. Congrats to the Editing visual effects guys that Ryan payed to do that zombie.

Not to be mean, but I feel like unless you have a pretty solid idea it's going to be insanely difficult to get noticed. Ryan here is trying to flex his skills - which he certainly has - but the time for "Lights Out" has passed. This short unfortunately feels like something I have already seen - Hill House, The Conjuring, Sinister, Insidious... You know what horror movies made a bang recently? The VVitch, 17th century period horror set in rural New England. Peele's films, political satire under the dress of horror. The movies are moving forward, but Ryan seems stuck in 2013, unfortunately. I wish him all the luck in the world, he surely will be able to come up with something truly original.
@audunystgaard
@audunystgaard 4 жыл бұрын
@@francisjirons I get what you're saying, but I disagree. LIghts out wasn't an insanely original either, but it had it's own fun idea which made many interested. Ryan has been working with studios and managers for a long time and they all responded to this particular idea. The age of short films turning into features (if that's what you meant) are just not over and there is no reason to think so.
@francisjirons
@francisjirons 4 жыл бұрын
@@audunystgaard I'm not saying the age of short films turning into features is over - it will never be. I'm saying THIS type of horror is dying out. Sandberg made his film in 2013: since then we've had Mama, the Conjuring, Sinister, Insidious and a million more. Heck, we've even had Hill House, which has already deconstructed the genre towards a more drama-oriented narration. What I'm saying is... This feels a bit old. The "flawed person faces an allegory/symbol of his flaw in the form of a spooky presence", structured - as Blake Snyder would said - as a literal Monster in the House... I've just seen too many movies like that. If it were 2013 this would be a blast, but unfortunately it's 2019... Yeah, Studios may be eager to still invest on this type of product... But the time when The Conjuring and Sinister were truly original has passed (they are already wonderful classics). What feels "original" now is The VVitch, Get Out, Us, It Follows... You see what I'm saying?
@audunystgaard
@audunystgaard 4 жыл бұрын
@@francisjirons I guess what you're saying is true to some extent, but I don't think a handful of films with similar sorts of themes will make that theme die out because there is a lot of stuff to explore around it. If Ryan's story has some original twists to it, which I'm confident it will have, I'm pretty sure it will still drag people to the cinema.

I am a huge fan of Film Riot. I’ve been learning a lot from you guys over the years and even the course I bought from Creative Live is so helpful a lot of times in my projects. I loved the cinematography and she is a great actress. Your work as a whole, aesthetically speaking, is beautiful. I’ve even watched the making of from another KZfaqr and the amount of people you had working on set is amazing. So there’s nothing but respect and love on this side. However, and if I can be honest, from an avid movie goer’s perspective (albeit not a horror fan, I admit), the story just felt lacking. I was waiting for something else on top of that moment and then it ends. It felt more like the setup towards the continuation of this narrative. So I may not be the most positive critic, but I felt that as a viewer, I had to be honest. Having said that, I will absolutely continue watching and enjoying all the content you guys put out. Looking forward to your next project!

I love Ryan and filmriot since like first episodes, loved his scifi concepts. And i was waiting for this as well, hearing about this great concept that could become a feature film. I know what Ryan wants to do, like David F Sandberg his light out short was made into a feature, but that idea had somthing to it it was simple and innovative and original. And Ryans film is perfect technicaly on every level, great cinematography, acting etc. BUT there is no IDEA, What is the concept ? What made him come alive, a door?, a creature from behind the door?, or maybe the house? has some powers, or maybe a wood from witch the door was made ? This could go basicaly anywhere in terms of plot. And rasing loved ones from the dead plot is far from original... The film was great however not a good concept for a feature film. Maybe theres more to it and maybe the full concet is awesome, but its not here in this short. I wish i could hear Ryans Elevator Pitch for this ? - Couple buys a old strange house, boy dies. Girl puts up a strange old Door, that accidentaly closes, then boy comes alive, ghost comes out of a door... Sory for poor english, not my native tongue.

PieMan4848 I didn’t attack absolutely anybody. Could be that I’m out of context. It could be that that intention wasn’t stated properly (do I absolutely have to watch every video Ryan makes to be an “insider”?). I even start out by complimenting everyone on their work. So I would think that you need to be open to the idea that everybody has different opinions on stuff, and that’s ok, so long as nobody’s disrespected, which I certainly didn’t do.

I have mixed feelings. The film looks and sounds superb. But I feel like the score is way overdone, and it would’ve been more effective if it had been quieter and subtler (this isn’t an epic story, and it just didn’t work for me). I wish you would’ve locked the camera down for a few shots (the one on the phone and the zooming shots that preceded it in particular), and I feel as though the story was incredibly bland. There was no arc. Just a girl living in a house, and then her dead husband comes back for the last 30 seconds. It makes it very hard to be invested, and it came off as generic.

Joshua William I would have done something with the door. The thing rolls under the door back to her side and she picks it up, walks back to the door and listens something hammers against the door and she calls the cops. The cops manage to open the door to find... nothing in the closet. The cops leave and she steps inside to inspect the closet. She finds nothing and the door closes behind her, locking her in the closet. Her phone is on the other side so she bangs against the door shouting for help. Nobody can hear her, no sound escapes her vocal cords. After a few hours of sitting she sees a small dial on her side of the door and turns it. The light unter the door changes. Thinking someone is there she decides to knock on the door. She hears the floor creaking on the other side and she starts screaming to let her out but again nothing audible. In frustration she bangs against the door and hears faintly on the other side her own voice quietly saying “i must be losing my mind.” Now watch it again with my plot in the back of your head.

This is only a proof of concept for a possible feature film, so it’s not technically the end I don’t think. I think that’s just where they cut the script to keep the project manageable and leave people wanting more. Rather than getting a full on ending then a feature length film to follow up. That would be kinda weird
@OrangeAceGaming
@OrangeAceGaming 4 жыл бұрын
Kyle Braby You can say the same thing about inadvertently going back in time. We’ve seen it multiple times with films like “Interstellar.” At least the ghosts can let the writers play around with the key thing we’ve learned about the main character; her grief over losing John.

Spoilers! I don’t want to be negative but seriously the story here is so derivative, and as a short does not in anyway stand on its own. Plot: woman finds spooky door, spooky ghost husband, low rent conjuring monster appears. We have seen this a million times. All gloss and no substance, and the classic way to loud horror sound design. The same with ballistic, the plot is so bare that it makes it in no way intriguing or entertaining. We know you want to make features and you want to save your full ideas for that, but don’t give us a half baked short and act as though it stands on its own.

I hope Ryan has more original ideas for a feature. i don't mind classic horror movies, haunted houses, etc etc but come on, i could see EXACTLY what would happen here even before she got locked out. the only thing i wasn't expecting was the dead husband, other than that i knew the door is haunted, monster will appear behind her and roll credits. and i was right!
@BloodyAwesomeTV
@BloodyAwesomeTV 4 жыл бұрын
ADCF Productions he talks a big talk about how story matters over gear, but his shorts consistently say the opposite. I think if he directed someone else’s script he could make something great, he’s just not that great of a writer.
@ADCFproductions
@ADCFproductions 4 жыл бұрын
@@BloodyAwesomeTV Yes i agree. Either he needs to watch more movies, or he needs to lay off the cliches. this thing with the monster behind the protagonist has been done sooo much! Also, why is the short so short?? the story has no room to breathe, everything happens too fast. And it would have been so cool if when she looked under the door she saw feet or a shadow walking slowly behind the door, how didn't he think of it? :C
@BloodyAwesomeTV
@BloodyAwesomeTV 4 жыл бұрын
ADCF Productions he also goes on about keeping things vague in his shorts to create mystery, but doesn’t seem to realize that keeping things to vague can also be interpreted as half baked and unfinished. Like keeping one aspect vague is okay, but once you start taking information out you’re no longer showing your audience anything remotely entertaining
