2:50 so wholesome. I really like your kind and calm training Methods! You don't have to shout at your dog for it to listen. They aren't deaf.

I use what is more known as a “balanced” training method with my dog, but I agree that there is no need to yell at your dog for it to listen. Ultimately, the same end result with a different path to it. That’s the goal. If my dog doesn’t understand something, I teach it thoroughly (many many reps in different environments, distractions, etc and using positive reinforcement to teach the initial behavior) before I ever think about applying a correction and even a correction is done pretty quietly, despite what many want to believe, as the trainers I work with don’t encourage yelling at them (it solves nothing). Even with balanced training methods, you need to strive to be fair and clearly communicate to your dog. I’ve found having this mindset has grown the relationship between my dog and I immensely. The exceptions for me are just if you are working from a distance or during a dog sport where you may give loud, verbal praise or the next command (I do agility among other sports), but that’s totally different context and different intent!

Well, why would he shout if the dog is close to him- I think shouting should only be used to make a really urgent command like "leave it","stay" or "come" (in the instance they do need to do that immediately)like yeling leave it as a dog is mouthing something theyre not supposed to, since at that point its an order not a request, like , this guy? He only requests stuff from inertia, which is perfectly fine :)
@wesli2510

The only command that should ever be yelled is ‘Leave it’ in a major situation where you are not close to your dog.

Thank you for showing the ups AND downs of training no. I don’t see that very often in training videos. I get super discouraged when he does something outside of what I’m asking. But this is a great reminder it’s not always going to be perfect and that consistency is key. Ordering a long lead and a front clip harness bc of your recommendation. Also I love how you kissed the top of her head for praise,I do it too. Thanks!!

I love that despite having some things not go to plan you don’t edit them out, it’s normal and it’s expected if you train purely positive because dogs are curious and if you want them to actually want to do what you ask them to without a punishment it’s harder to do but worth it in the long run.

You don’t know how much these videos have helped me and my new pup! Most training videos I see are obviously with an already trained dog which doesn’t help me at all. I feel like a lot of trainers have a certain way about them where they are borderline rude telling you what to do and kind of act like they’re better then you. Just get a nose up in the air type of vibe and they won’t listen to any criticism. You are the complete opposite! It’s great seeing you struggle and then see inertia now and how well behaved she is! And the fact that this is free is all the better. Thank you so much Zac!!

It doesn't "love" you because it is literally incapable of loving you in the same way that a brick is incapable of loving you. Stop projecting emotions onto an animal, that's just derangement. It views you as its food and survival force and that's it. Doggie "kisses" (🤢) ? Nope, just a form of begging for food and acceptance. Sorry to break it to you. Now go find some human love, it's much more valuable!

My roommate got a Shetland Sheepdog the same time you got Inertia. My roommate's puppy is about a month older. I was really excited because it was perfect timing as they are so close in age and we could watch her progress and use this as a way to understand training the new puppy. Unfortunately, my roommate gets frustrated too easily with her puppy and I can't just train the puppy for her. It is very disappointing because the puppy is a bit naughty and I know she would develop quickly if my roommate could relax.

Hey Zak! Impressive work and progress you've made with Inertia! How is she doing with grooming? My dog hates being brushed. I've been filling her Kong with peanut butter and letting her lick it while I use the slicker brush on her, but as soon as she finishes the peanut butter (and sometimes even before she finishes it) she will start nipping and growling at the brush, especially when I get closer to her legs. I'd love to see an update on Inertia's grooming and any tips for those of us who might have dogs that are less than cooperative or accepting of being brushed! Thanks!

I would try short exercises to build engagement with you and a lure. These would look like short exercises where you use a command word like “follow” with a food lure and get the dog to follow your hand for about 3 seconds. Overtime you can build this time up and hopefully get to the tricks you want! Remember to use high value treats! Best of luck :)

I love your videos and your way of training!!! You've helped me a lot... I don't usually ask for specific help but I really need some with one problem I have. I've an almost 1year old German Shepherd, when she was around 3months our neighbor's dog bite her because her owner just let her off the leash and it came directly for our pup. It happened again two other times for the same reason, but they just wouldn't do anything, they wouldn't pay for treatment and even if I wanted to sue them it wasn't considered as severe enough to take actions here in my country. Fortunately the last two were less severe because I was prepared, but growing up, my pup got so angry and aggressive only with that specific dog (and family). Whenever she sees the other dog, she launches at her and barks and won't listen to me... How could I solve this problem?... I'm still training her on lose leash, cause she's extremely active, courious and friendly dog, but it doesn't compare with how she acts with that dog... I really don't know what to do... Please help me!

Ha! I live in the metro Atlanta area, but in the suburbs (a very populated one, though), and some of where you went in this are some areas I’d like to head to the city to do additional training in a different environment to “level it up” and provide more context and generalization. Problem would be parking (I hate the paid parking almost everywhere in the city >_>). The long line wasn’t a problem, though? I use an e-collar for off leash training, but basically the same in that your dog is basically “off leash proofing” within the city (I use food, leash and long line for initial training). Figured the city may be more strict on this..

Hello Zak! I love your videos! I have an unusual training situation. My dog, who is an 8-year old poodle, gave birth to 7 puppies two months ago. We are keeping one named Captain. We are considering an electric fence. What are your thoughts on that? We live in a suburban neighborhood. Bijou (the 8-year-old) is not super well trained, I was little when we got her, and she has been trained with a prong collar and an e-collar. We mostly use the e-collar but we avoid using the shock unless absolutely necessary. What do you think we should do? Thank you for doing your videos! Also, what do you think of clicker training for the 10-week-old, Captain?

He started reacting on dogs way more, he wants to be everywhere and pulls on the leash. I have been working on all of those aspects with a little success in each of those areas. I would love to ask you, when you were trlling about toy as a reward is it good? I personally trying to use ball on a rope, that my dog absolutely love to play tug of war with me and I basically train only with that especially in busy environment that means around the cars, other barking dogs, wildlife, etc. Is it good or I should ho back to treats? Thanks for everything, love from Czech Republic ❤

Hey Zac - How do you deal with other dog trainer's and their reactions, comments, or opinions about your training? I know that multiple types of training work, and not every dog responds well to each specific type, but I enjoy your approach above everyone else's. I have a 1 year old stray that we rescued and the training is EXTREMELY difficult. I'm being pressured to do balanced/e-collar training... do you think it's a gap in my own training with her or should I give it a try?

I’m so jealous when I see how great Inertia is doing around distractions. Max, my 1 year old Labrador is really NOT obedient around distractions and sometimes won’t even come with no distractions even though I may have his favourite treat or toy. It’s just so frustrating, because I don’t want to call so many times that I reinforce his ignoring... how should I handle this? He came at every single recall before the teenage phase. He will walk nicely and heal, but not come when he’s sniffing or looking at something... I know that every dog is different and therefore I was prepared for everything and I’m not giving up, but I don’t know whether to keep training with plenty of mistakes or stop the recall training completely while he’s a teenager. Sometimes, he won’t even come in the house...

I had a similar problem with my girl. She hadn't had much human contact before being adopted at 11 months, so she really didn't care much about me or anybody else, she liked to hang out but most of the time she would want to just run free. What helped in my case is, aside from going extra slow and train in a lot of intermediate scenarios (like in my front door, which is not as distracting as the park but more distracting than being indoors), was luring her whenever she didn't respond. That is, whenever I called her and she didn't move, I would go towards her (she was on leash to ensure safety), lure her to me with the treat or toy and mark and reinforce when she walked in my direction a few steps. If she didn't want the treat or toy, that was my cue for either just letting her be if she wss being civil or go away from the distractions otherwise, because it meant the environment was too much for her.

My 13 mo lab's obedience was shaky until i introduced negative consequences for ignoring known commands. She is a big softy so it didnt take much. She recalls off deer, dogs, bunnies, neighbors, and everything else i've called her from. 90% of her training was treats and praise, then the remaining 10 was cemented with a well timed and memorable punisher for ignoring the command. Hope this helps

@@gobiastart4832 I had the opposite experience. I used both rewards and punishment with my dog (and other's dogs), but once I switched to pure positive reinforcement and clicker training she has only gotten better and better.

I know you've probably mentioned this in one of your videos, but I keep wondering which training treats you use? I notice she seems to really like them and that you often tear them. Looking to mix up our training treats to add variety. Thanks!

I have a question if you or anyone can help answer it. We just got a new puppy last Thursday, a Labrador. He is 14 weeks old. Two day ago I went up to him before we left to the store. I let him know we are leaving to the store and will be back soon to play with him. He wagged his tail and showed his teeths for about 10 seconds. So my question is, is he smiling out of excitement or is it an aggression expression? Thank you!

In your experience with training puppies, how old should puppies be taken from their mother to sell to buyers? I heard it should be 8 weeks so as to allow the mother to do the initial socializing and training. I bought a puppy from a breeder recently with the assumption that I was buying an 8 week old, it turns out he was only 6 weeks old. I couldn't even get the puppy to acknowledge treats and he just kept spitting them out when he did.. The other thing is he just wanted to gnaw on my feet and when I laid down on the floor he would not even acknowledge a ball that I was trying to give him, he just wanted to nibble on me everywhere. At one point looking for a teat. After this I assumed that it would be too difficult to train him correctly without heavy frustration so I called the breeder and ask them to take the puppy back for two weeks with his mother and litter mates. The breeder took him back, but still gave me grief about how he has been a breeder for a long time and 6 weeks is normal for him. I explained that the the internet told me otherwise. What is your take on this, as for the right age to receive a puppy and then commence proper focused training?
