We've run into to several issues since buying our converted sprinter van, but this was by far the scariest. As I say at the beginning of this video, I realize I made some bad decisions in this situation that put us in danger. Thankfully, we are both fine, and we have learned from the experience.

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the #travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this #travelvlog to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! After achieving our new goal of 100 countries before 2020 and all 7 continents, we have no plans to slow down anytime soon, and we are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

Ya know, as I watch this, you never mention that you have a gas detection sensor/alarm. If gas had leaked into a closed compartment, a really BIG explosion could have happened. Worse, if the gas leaked into the sleeping quarters, you could have been asphyxiated. You should have a gas sensor/alarm installed near floor level and a smoke/CO alarm on the ceiling. All RVs are required to have them. Home built RVs often forget them. Could save your lives!

A family member of mine was killed as a result of third and fourth degree burns following an explosion while doing something similar. PLEASE I have watched every single video you have ever made, and your adventures never fail to bring a smile to my face, make me laugh or sometimes even cry tears of joy. I was yelling at my computer during this video. I am BEGGING you to stop with the DIY stuff. Get this vehicle professionally checked. There are some fantastic suggestions in the comments about safer methods of cooking. Also, have you double checked your insurance policy to make sure it would cover an accidental issue on your van without professional certification? I was half-covering my eyes during this whole thing. Glad you guys are ok! *Fire safety tips: Don't wear rubber gloves if you are dealing with something that could produce fire, they will melt onto your hands, grab gloves that are rated for fire. Not sure if you guys have: a CO detector as well as a fire blanket, but both should be in your van. Check your extinguisher, they do expire. Also, not sure if you have a first aid kit but definitely a good idea to have one on hand. Good luck with the rest of your journey and hopefully things will stop breaking on your guys 🤞.

Even now, the husband is still recovering and their kids are left to fend for themselves and take care if their father at the same time. Their only blessing is that they are surrounded by a community of people who care and are always ready to help. please be very careful. A propane leak should always be taken seriously. It’s better to close the propane first whenever you suspect a leak and call a professional to check it.

Having lived in a fifth wheel and a class C after starting out in a DIY van I have a few suggestions based solely on experience. 1). Take your van to the closest repair shop and get it checked for safety issues. 2). Any time you have an issue with anything that can catch fire, over heat, or give off toxic gas get someone with the proper certifications and licences to fix it. It costs more $$ but you will live through it and not die in your sleep. 3) Get a qualified person to move that propane tank out of the van! A small leak might not be noticed, but you could die from a tiny leak in an enclosed space. SERIOUSLY! 4) If you can find courses at a college, community center, etc on RV repair, take the time and spend the money to attend them. I had no intention of taking on serious repairs that involved heat, gas, water or refrigeration, but the classes I took really helped in knowing when I needed a repair person and when I could attempt to do it myself. Also, if you can find the storage space there are some things that made my years in my RV's more enjoyable. A portable camping stove that runs off of small propane cartridges. A foldable shower tent. A small heater. A plastic outdoor carpet for under the shower tent at least 4x6 feet so you can use it as a patio rug (it really cuts down on dirt being tracked inside) and an electric frying pan for when you have an electrical source (in a camp ground with hookups or parked in your parents driveway) it really saves having to fill up your tanks as often. There are other things but these are things I thought were a waste if space but I found invaluable. Good luck, please keep safe. And Happy Trails!
@kevdenn
@kevdenn 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely get the propane tank moved out of the interior where it can vent. Have a licensed technician do the work and get a gas safety inspection done...you can't be messing with something that has the potential to do serious harm guys.

@@formyownedification3879 There are a lot of products out there sold as RV products that give off toxic fumes and gases. However, the biggest is propane. It can kill you from breathing the gas, but other ways, too. Nate .... that was one of the most dangerous things you could have done and you were lucky to not have been hurt. Testing a gas leak with a naked flame is probably the number one method of NOT to find a gas leak because of the obvious chance of getting yourself badly burnt ... but more importanly the possible change of an explosion. I would always recommend that any of your KZfaq watchers remember what happened to you and get someone who has gas fitting/plumbing experience to do this work if they dont have any knowhow. BTW, the norm to test leaking gas around hose/pipe connections is to apply soapy water with a small brush and see if any bubbles occur. Did i also noticed you tightened the the conection with a pair of pliers? If so, I would get a proper fitting spanner to make sure it is tightened properly. You are a lucky peron Nate.

Guys, I have lived with propane for 25 years. 1- if there is propane there MUST be a hole/opening for PERMANENT ventilation near the floor, as propane is denser than air. No shortcuts, no excuses on this one. It is extremely important, as it can kill you while you sleep. 2- if you smell propane you MUST open all windows, doors, etc and DO NOT light any fire or turn on any light, because that can make it explode. Then close the tank for good and get it properly fixed. Please do follow this advice, this can literally save your life. It did save my life the time I got a faulty propane tank from the store (no harm at all). I followed those rules and lived to tell the tale. If you do follow those rules it is really safe. By the way, love your channel.
@cremebrulee4759
@cremebrulee4759 4 жыл бұрын
Great advice. People take propane for granted because of all those propane cylinders out in front of the gas station. They don't understand how dangerous it is. You don't hear stories on the news about the injuries and deaths from gas grills, but they do occur.
@C0braChicken2
@C0braChicken2 4 жыл бұрын
Yes the valve on the propane tank itself can also leak, and if using one indoors like they are, that fitting should be checked for leaks every time they change out the tank... also you are better off with that valve being 100% open, or 100% closed, I have found a lot of them leak when only halfway open. I wonder if the cabinet that the propane bottle is stored in, is properly vented?
@antheadean653
@antheadean653 4 жыл бұрын
Cabinets are usually vented because the doors do not usually close hermetically (they are not supposed to) and therefore gas leaks out of the cabinet. The problem is that the van should have a ventilation grille so that in the event of a leak the gas could leak outside the van and avoid an explosion. Where I live it is compulsory to have those grilles in the room where the propane stove is and if you don't have them the installation is not approved and the gas company will make it illegal for you to use propane at home. And it does work, propane accidents/explosions are extremely rare.

@@markmtb1978 matters not at all.....on what planet is it ok to have a gas tank in an enclosed space like that?? The gas tank should always be secured outside of the vehicle, just as it is in caravans. The setup that van has is exactly the same as using a bbq indoors....massive no go.

I know this is a year to late, but always apply your pipe sealant tape clockwise, if you apply it counter-clockwise it will loosen as you screw the fitting on.

The comments on this video remind me of the comments from when you guys were in Switzerland and you were hiking over those crevasses with no help. And similar to that time, you guys could have avoided this problem if you just spent some money to get help. I know that you guys aren't poor so stop being cheap.

You do realize that they just lived in a House for a month that they paid for, they bought a converted sprinter van, they did major renovations to the sprinter van, they had to pay for car insurance to the van, and now that they are in the United States, they have to pay taxes. They have also made fewer videos. They have made only 5 more videos in 2020 then from the time period of July 1st to September 30th in 2019. This means that they are making less ad revenue. Just saying.

Smartz Better spend a bit of money than leaving two families in grief and having your life cut short... just sayin’ Also, there is something called “financial planning”. They knew they would make less content, they probably knew they would have to pay rent, and I sure hope they knew that a used van would not be free and would probably come with issues. Also, what we are saying here is he is trying to do repairs he obviously cannot do to try and show he is a man...

Not sure how I feel about this video and your over all mistakes. So far your lucky but I don't think " I didn't expect this to happen " can keep going as something very serious can go wrong and that phrase won't work! you need expert advice with things like that. Not a funny situation. Stay safe

I'm getting the whole lemon vibe from the van. I know you liked the couple who built it and sold it to you. But maybe they knew they didn't do a great job. Only my opinion, but every electrical and gas product and connection should've been vetted by a professional before they were allowed to sell it.

Don’t think it’s the van. I think it’s more the fact that they have no idea what they are doing. Nate keeps making stupid mistakes while trying to find out what is wrong. I think he should stick to having professionals do the work. I am finding really frustrating to watch them these days.
