fun fact: the scene where the trio are having dinner with tommy's mom was 100% improvised. Scorcese said he didn't really want to direct his mother (who plays tommy's mom), so all he told her was to improvise and show everyone the picture.

What always struck me about this film was the "go get your shine box " line it's so illustrative of how Tommy became who he is a short weak kid bullied and looked down on who's obviously become respected through violence and refuses to go back to what he was. It explains so much about his character and the things he does.

By the way, the real Henry Hill would get drunk and show up on Howard Stern's show a lot in the 90s. Definitely worth hearing his appearances, especially the first one. He was a real character. Hilarious stuff. They'd start talking at him like they were Joe Pesci and he'd start cracking up.

That's also why they say he wasn't actually there for every crime, he simply heard about them from the bar, which is most likely true. As also irl his wife was with Paulie the whole time, which would make her unlikable in the movie but also he wasn't really there he was at the bar for most of it.

Nicholas Pileggi wrote the book Wiseguy that 'Goodfellas' is based on and he co-wrote the screenplay for the movie with Scorsese. Pileggi was married to screenwriter Nora Ephron ("When Harry Met Sally", "Sleepless in Seattle", etc.) Ephron wrote the screenplay for the comedy movie "My Blue Heaven" about a gangster in the witness protection program living in the suburbs. Ephron's screenplay was based on some of the same research and interviews into Henry Hill that Pileggi had done. So, in a way, you could consider "My Blue Heaven" to be a sequel to "Goodfellas" chronicling what happened to Henry Hill after entering witness protection.

Actually Goodfellas isn't flawless; it has errors, some of which make absolutely no sense, for example: After Billy Batts was beaten unconscious and put in the trunk of Henry's car, they all assumed Batts was dead; therefore why does Tommy borrow his mother's kitchen knife?, because as far as they knew Batts was dead so what would be the point in borrowing his mother's kitchen knife?. There are other errors in this movie too, this one is to do with the editing, where Ray Liotta's voice-over is saying that Tommy had done the worst thing killing Batts, while we are being shown Jimmy stomping on Batts. There are other errors too; nevertheless because this movie succeeds in every element of film making with great performances, great script, humor, great editing, great cinematography, great music the errors are overlooked; as it still is a Masterpiece, even though the budget for this movie was only $25,000,000; lots of movies made these days cost $500,000,000 yet are soon forgotten.

This reaction was so incredible, I don't even know where to start. First off, dude I'm with you 100% on your feelings about Wolf Of Wall Street. Second, Goodfellas actually is part of a sort of "trilogy": "Goodfellas", "Casino" and "The Irishman". "Casino" is a riot, it's basically "Goodfellas Goes To Vegas". Great movie. It's also part of the great lineage of masterpieces/greats he's done with De Niro: Mean Streets (1973), Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), The King Of Comedy (1982), this one, Cape Fear (1991) and Casino. Another must-see Scorsese is his wild 80s indie dark-comedy "After Hours" (also one of his shortest films) Amazing movie, amazing cast, don't miss that! I saw "Killers Of The Flower Moon" two days ago and it's not my fave, although I'm happy i saw it. Basically after "Casino" I felt Scorsese went down a peg and I've never been a big fan of the stuff he's done afterwards. But man oh man: "Goodfellas". What a movie. LOVED how you guys noticed so much of the cinematography, how you appreciated the acting, the humor, the script. Just a fantastic reaction. Definitely hit all those movies I just mentioned, they'll all get views I'm sure! We need way more reactions to "King Of Comedy", "After Hours" and "Raging Bull" definitely. And you'll love "Casino" if you love this one. Sharon Stone's greatest performance. "Goodfellas" is the best because it's the first but "Casino" has plenty to admire about it.

Great reaction and commentary. So far as Scorsese, please react to more from the the approximate first half of his career, and especially those that, for whatever reasons, didn’t garner as much public praise. Perhaps my single most favorite is The King of Comedy (1982). It’s a very different role for DeNiro, and it features a very rare and excellent dramatic role by the legendary comedian Jerry Lewis. As you're assembling your list of Scorsese movies to see, don't overlook 'After Hours'. One of my favorite movies and, rather rare for Scorsese, it's a comedy!

I was one of the people that said "Do you even understand film" on one video, I learnd a lot from you watching this, thank you. The observation of how each tracking shot becomes darker as a motif I dont know if I ever spotted that before.

The different stages of gangster life expressed in tone, pacing, and editing are amazing. The ending is incredible. Absolutely loved your commentary!!

I watch quite a few reaction videos and happily came across yours today. Very intelligent, insightful commentary. Don't know if this has already been mentioned but the Copa sequence was a single, unedited streetcar shot. Also, "I'm salmon' here" was Dustin Hoffman as Ratso Rizzo in "Midnight Cowboy".

Great reaction guys. If you liked this, I highly recommend "A Bronx Tale", "Casino", "The Sopranos" (HBO series), "Donnie Broscoe", and of course "The Godfather". You get a lot of the same actors. Some of those actors were the real deal in their past.

Great pick-up on the editing❤. That's Thelma Schoonmaker, his long-time editor. She's still working too. Did Killers of The Flower Moon at 83💪.

A classic definitely. I remember renting this when I was 14 and being amazed. Still not my favorite from Scorsese, but it's definitely one of his best films. Joe Pesci gives an iconic performance

I’m sure someone has said it. But definitely checkout Casino another Marty classic!! DeNiro, Stone, Pesci are top notch in that movie.

As others have pointed out, the little white-haired lady is Martin Scorsese's mom, Catherine. But the guy making the sauce in the "dinner in prison" scene is his dad, Charles ("Good, but you gotta have the pork. That's the flavor.") Charles is also one of the two hit men who take out Tommy. ("And that's that.")

I’ve got some Italians in my family through marriage and it’s funny to be around them at our family get togethers. They aren’t Italians cranked up to 11 like you often get in movies like this, but they definitely hover around like a 7-8😂 It’s always a good time though and the food is damn good!
