Good stuff. I would: Use a select/premium grade of pine. Use a sanding sealer before stain. Glossy? That's not natural for a wood beam. I'd go with flat, satin at the very most.

One trick I’ve seen that looks like it works fantastic is to use fiberglass reinforced filament strapping tape on the outside of the seams. Lay the three pieces of wood with the miters facing down and apply the tape lengthwise over the entire seam. Flip it over, apply your glue and fold the sides up to form the beam and tack in place with brads or staples. The tape not only keeps the edges perfectly aligned, but it also keeps the glue contained on the inside for less clean-up. It’s pretty slick. I plan to try it soon when I wrap some columns on my patio in cedar.

Great tip! I’ve seen this used for smaller projects like boxes as well.

Really like the look of the beams. Your attention to detail paid off with the beams looking and fitting perfectly. Your foreman at the end is a hoot; pretty little lady.

Thanks for the tips. I am about to do this for a 24’ span with a single post in the middle. Trying to figure out how to do the section where it meets the single post.

Hey, I’ve seen some people stain before and some after hanging the beam. Any reason you chose before? Asking because you have to fasten the beam, then fill and putty the hole. Does the stain hold after that?
@TheReformationWoodshop
@TheReformationWoodshop Ай бұрын
Staining after would be best to conceal fasteners and putty for sure, often times folks just trim it in a way that hides the screws. So that’s always an option 👊🏻

I would use Flexseal on the inside instead of glue. It stick well and fills the voids. .

I would have left the sides a little wide and scribed them to the ceiling( it’s not the roof)Almost all ceilings are bowed. I also would have used a spline at the miters. Especially 14’ long miters.Using staples is NOT LIKE A PRO. But for “quick and dirty “ it’s not bad. But it’s not like a pro.

@@minimumwrist3546 then it’s not a Pro job - it’s a cheap job that’ll look good for a little bit then warp.

So you're putting beams over beams? Why not just stain the current beams?
@TheReformationWoodshop
@TheReformationWoodshop 4 ай бұрын
The beams the protrude form the ceiling are manufactured beams that consist of three visible parts, two 2x10 dimensional lumber boards and a sheet of 1/2 plywood sandwiched in between. The faux beam is a nice way to hide all of that structural stuff 👍🏻
